$170 DSi drops in US April 5

[UPDATE] Dual-camera-enabled third revision of handheld arrives stateside in less than two months alongside Rhythm Heaven; Nintendo plans to continue sales of DS Lite.

Since the DSi was first announced in October 2008, Nintendo has remained coy about its US release date. After saying only that the handheld would arrive in North America "well into 2009," the company announced last month that it would launch stateside "before summer."

Coming soon! (Seriously.)
Coming soon! (Seriously.)

Finally, this morning Nintendo announced that the DSi will arrive in the US on April 5 at a $169.99 price point. The handheld, which has been on sale in Japan since November 2008, will be available in black (pictured) and an all-new blue hue. Unfortunately, when contacted by GameSpot UK for a European announcement, Nintendo Europe declined to comment on the DSi's release in Europe, its final major territory.

Today's announcement also confirmed that the game Rhythm Heaven will make its American debut on April 5. The rhythm action game has proved to be incredibly popular in Japan, where it has sold 1.6 million copies after earlier versions proved popular in arcades and on the Game Boy Advance. GameSpot recently previewed the US version of the minigame collection.

Last but not least, Nintendo also announced that the DSiWare application will also be making its way to the US. The application lets owners of the portable download new software from the Internet a la the iPhone's App Store, with prices starting at 200 Nintendo points ($2). Nintendo declined to reveal any release-date information about DSiWare.

[UPDATE] Speaking with GameSpot, Nintendo said that it plans to continue to make and sell the DS Lite at its $129.99 price point in the US. "The DS Lite will continue to be supported at retail alongside the DSi," said a Nintendo of America rep. "The DSi is not meant to replace the other systems. There has been no news in terms of a price drop."

To find out more about the DSi, be sure to check out GameSpot's hands-on with the Japanese edition of the handheld.

Both my daughters have a DS Lite. My wife had one until we gave it to a friend to give to her son for Christmas 2007. We've been debating on getting another one. I don't know about paying $170 for a DSi. If I was to get a DS for myself, this would be the one I get. Although Nintendo is probably preparing for the next generation Nintendo handheld to be released in the next couple years, so I might just wait for that... _

Glad to hear this coming out so soon. Though I wish Nintendo was releasing some DSi with Pokemon Platinum. I'll get over that.

When it drops to the current price of the Lite, I just might consider it.

Great! My DS Light's 'L' button hasn't worked in almost a year, and I recently had to crazy glue a big crack in the hinge. I didn't want to have to pay $75 to get it fixed when there was a new one on the way, but I didn't know if it would hold together long enough.

I think I'll wait on seeing if any of the apps are worth it. I like the slimmer design, larger screens, and the new look and feel of the buttons, but I'm not quite sold yet. The Lite is already pretty good for $50 less, so time will tell.

well, I still have the original DS. Might not hurt to upgrade since the lighting on my current one sucks.... but I don't know, I really don't play it enough to dish out $170. Plus no backwards compatibility? Bah! Bah I say!

Im not looking forward to this. None of the features appeals to me, especially at that RIDICULOUSLY high price point. But with all Nintendo products the fanboys will jump on board with the quickness.

I want a DSi but am frustrated that they are taking away the backwards compatibility. I really wanted to get the DSi not just for DS games but also some of the games that I missed on the Gameboy Advance, which I never bought. I hope maybe they port some of there finer games to the DS, such as MAL: Superstar Saga and few others. However, I'm glad to hear that the pricing of the DSi is slightly less than what most people had assumed it to be.

Why doesn't anyone make a decent handheld for the grownups? You know, two analog sticks and some cool online shooters? Microsoft, care to give us a hand, here?

Oh fun, same price as the PSP. No thanks Nintendo. I'll keep the regular DSlite. I already have the PSP for multimedia capabilities.

Now I know the date, just gotta figure out if I'm really gettin' it, or not. My original DS works fine, except for the shoulder buttons, & the half busted hinge for the top screen, where I dropped it a few, hasn't bothered me in terms of gameplay, or anything. The shoulders are my only issues. Also, yes the DS is good for gaming, but I have a feeling N is gonna do what they did, the same thing they did, when the GBA SP(Nes edition) came out: an entirely new handheld will soon be born about a year after release.

I have to be honest, when I heard about the DSi not having the GBA slot, my interest for it died down really fast. However, if DSiWare ends up as a quality service with some good games, Nintendo may end up forcing my hand here. Heck, my original DS could use a partner in crime, anyway. :P

emptycow: Why so hard on Nintendo, what did they ever do to you? They had an idea and decided to market it, it's what business is all about. Sure about 90% of games released on the ds and wii are total crap, but people are buying them. Nintendo knows how to run a profitable business and that's why they have been around longer than any game company. And as far as your comment about releasing the dsi only to stop people from bootlegging games, don't worry, you will still be able to use your r4ds in this new dsi.

I don't own a PSP or DS but i've held both. DS feels like trash and the games look terrible compared to the PSP games. And I enjoy holding the PSP. I played NFS and Raw 2008 on the DS, just a waste of cash.

1. It is not backward compatible. 2. The screen, although larger, is not any higher resolution so games will not look any better. In fact, they will look slightly worse due to pixelation. 3.The cameras are only around 0.3 megapixel. The camera on my phone is better than that and the camera on my phone sucks. 4. The battery will not last as long due to the larger screens. 5. It costs $40 more for some reason. I really don't understand how this is better than a DS Lite. I guess it has an SD card slot now but the only thing I can see that being used for is to sell you old GBA games since it isn't backward compatible or for saving your cool 0.3 megapixel pictures to it. This definitely looks like a slight milking Nintendo is doing here. I will definitely be keeping my DS Lite.

I honestly don't care for this. I have 2 DS, Black and Silver, and both are perfectly fine for me, I don't see the point with this DSi. I mean, it doesn't even play GBA games, which is sad.

Eh all fluff for more money. Even if new DS games attempt to make it DSi specific they would be insane not to make sure it runs just as good on an older DS...
