$170 DSi drops in US April 5

[UPDATE] Dual-camera-enabled third revision of handheld arrives stateside in less than two months alongside Rhythm Heaven; Nintendo plans to continue sales of DS Lite.

Since the DSi was first announced in October 2008, Nintendo has remained coy about its US release date. After saying only that the handheld would arrive in North America "well into 2009," the company announced last month that it would launch stateside "before summer."

Coming soon! (Seriously.)
Coming soon! (Seriously.)

Finally, this morning Nintendo announced that the DSi will arrive in the US on April 5 at a $169.99 price point. The handheld, which has been on sale in Japan since November 2008, will be available in black (pictured) and an all-new blue hue. Unfortunately, when contacted by GameSpot UK for a European announcement, Nintendo Europe declined to comment on the DSi's release in Europe, its final major territory.

Today's announcement also confirmed that the game Rhythm Heaven will make its American debut on April 5. The rhythm action game has proved to be incredibly popular in Japan, where it has sold 1.6 million copies after earlier versions proved popular in arcades and on the Game Boy Advance. GameSpot recently previewed the US version of the minigame collection.

Last but not least, Nintendo also announced that the DSiWare application will also be making its way to the US. The application lets owners of the portable download new software from the Internet a la the iPhone's App Store, with prices starting at 200 Nintendo points ($2). Nintendo declined to reveal any release-date information about DSiWare.

[UPDATE] Speaking with GameSpot, Nintendo said that it plans to continue to make and sell the DS Lite at its $129.99 price point in the US. "The DS Lite will continue to be supported at retail alongside the DSi," said a Nintendo of America rep. "The DSi is not meant to replace the other systems. There has been no news in terms of a price drop."

To find out more about the DSi, be sure to check out GameSpot's hands-on with the Japanese edition of the handheld.

I'm in between of wanting a DSi and not. Give me some good games to buy a DSi that supports new games or supports DS games. Otherwise I'll stick to my DS Lite, but I'll probably crack and buy one in the end at launch. -_-

Enemy, I've always hated the stereotype that gamers are "nerds". What makes you a nerd by being a gamer? Do you have to carry a pocket protector? Be a hardcore geek that uses words like l33t? There are a lot of gamers who aren't nerds, and it is a respectable hobby. If people keep considering themselves nerds, it'll gaming will continue to be looked down upon. Anyway, to get back to the matter at hand, I'm not interested in a DS Lite. Why would I want a couple crappy cameras attached to my DS? I'll stick with the old one and wait for a NEW portable.

Evilman97: I am not to sure if you know this, but people that play video games are considered nerds. Technically you are one too, so to call another person a nerd when you are one, just seems a bit silly, does it not?

Evilman97, your age and maturity is truly showing in what you just did. Adel4 just agreed with you, and, you thinking you're somehow cool, said "shut the **** up". Maybe you guys know each other and are joking around, but if you're not, please leave. You're ruining GameSpot.

"Also the DS and DSI are more of child/girl handheld. The wii is more of a child/girl system and the psp , ps3, and 360 are more for older kids / boys. " Wow, what century do you live in? As a female 360 player, I'm quite offended that you would stick me in with children. You don't get dates often, do you?

cayne phoenix, your DS games will still work. However, Game Boy Advance games won't be supported anymore. Also, I don't think this is worth $170; might as well just wait for the Nintendo Pii or whatever to come out in about two years.

It doesn't have a GBA slot, therefore its useless to me, unless Nintendo releases a Gameboy Player for the Wii, but I don't see that happening ever.

Some of you idiots aren't realizing this isn't a SMALL upgrade. There are so many hardware upgrade and new features. I could easily name 5 of each but you could just look them up. And don't BASH nintendo for making two upgrades over a period of time when sony made two upgrades in a more compacted time. And yeah its been 5 years. Maybe they should make a new system. Who says this isn't? When the DS Lites sales die out, they could easily turn this into a new system by manufacturing games specifically for the DSi. It can maintain better graphics, they could use some of those new features in the games. Why not? Its a definite "maybe".

For me, its not the right time, hardware or price. I've gone through 2 DS Lites (broken due to heavy use). So there should be no question how much of a fan of the DS I am. But I've gotten the iPhone since and it when that happened, there was a revalation that showed me how outdated the DS Lite hardware is. Having played (and finished) dozens and dozens of DS games, I'm sure even the developers would agree, some games would definitely be much better with solid 3D acceleration and video playback. 2D games look great, but 3D games look very outdated. Should they not come out at all? Its hard to say. Why can't we have both? Nintendo had a chance to improve things with the DSi. Unfortunately they didn't. And they want to charge us 30% more for this? Hmmmm....

Seems sort of like PSP 2000 to PSP 3000. In other words, only worth getting if you don't already have a dslite. Personally, I'm just waiting for Sony or Nintendo to release a new handheld system, not just a modified version of an old design.

I don't get what all the moaning is about this? How often do you upgrade your phones when they have only incremental upgrades? DSi isn't just a dslite with a camera on! it also has an 2x overclocked cpu, more operating ram, 2 cameras, bigger screens both of which are even brighter the the dslite, music playback, an hcsd slot for storage, a very basic web browser, wpa support (finally!) an online store, firmware updates, a much better user interface and you can switch games without powering off and on again! ok so taking the gba slot out is a sacrifice but really how often do you use that anyway? my money is on gba games being downloaded from the online store anyway ala virtual console. all that for only a small amount more then the lite! count me in! i just really hope the euro launch includes white

If Nintendo uses the DSiWare well, releasing GB, GBC, and GBA games on there, I'll definitely check this out. That would definitely make up for the lack of GBA port, and then some IMO. And on top of that, it seems like Nintendo will be using these new features, not just as extra features outside of the games, but as a way to expand on gameplay in some cases (like in that DSiWare WarioWare game), so hopefully it will be implemented well in some games. If, however, they don't use the DSiWare to release games from the older Gameboys, then I'll just get a DSLight for the GBA port, and the cheaper price.

Wow, that's pretty damn quick US release--frankly I wouldn't thought it would have made it here this early in 2009.... I'm absolutely glad I waited to get a DS--or even import this one from Japan--now I can at least save on spending more than what's the retail value. I'm curious though how the blue one is gonna look? I saw the black and white one that are the Japanese versions. I'd like to see them to a red one.
