$170 DSi drops in US April 5

[UPDATE] Dual-camera-enabled third revision of handheld arrives stateside in less than two months alongside Rhythm Heaven; Nintendo plans to continue sales of DS Lite.

Since the DSi was first announced in October 2008, Nintendo has remained coy about its US release date. After saying only that the handheld would arrive in North America "well into 2009," the company announced last month that it would launch stateside "before summer."

Coming soon! (Seriously.)
Coming soon! (Seriously.)

Finally, this morning Nintendo announced that the DSi will arrive in the US on April 5 at a $169.99 price point. The handheld, which has been on sale in Japan since November 2008, will be available in black (pictured) and an all-new blue hue. Unfortunately, when contacted by GameSpot UK for a European announcement, Nintendo Europe declined to comment on the DSi's release in Europe, its final major territory.

Today's announcement also confirmed that the game Rhythm Heaven will make its American debut on April 5. The rhythm action game has proved to be incredibly popular in Japan, where it has sold 1.6 million copies after earlier versions proved popular in arcades and on the Game Boy Advance. GameSpot recently previewed the US version of the minigame collection.

Last but not least, Nintendo also announced that the DSiWare application will also be making its way to the US. The application lets owners of the portable download new software from the Internet a la the iPhone's App Store, with prices starting at 200 Nintendo points ($2). Nintendo declined to reveal any release-date information about DSiWare.

[UPDATE] Speaking with GameSpot, Nintendo said that it plans to continue to make and sell the DS Lite at its $129.99 price point in the US. "The DS Lite will continue to be supported at retail alongside the DSi," said a Nintendo of America rep. "The DSi is not meant to replace the other systems. There has been no news in terms of a price drop."

To find out more about the DSi, be sure to check out GameSpot's hands-on with the Japanese edition of the handheld.

Although the DSi has no GBA slot, it dosen't really bother me and it's why I'm going to keep my black and blue DS lite for the GBA games and Guitar Hero. I like the idea with the MP3's and Camera's in there though. However, about Rhythym Heaven doing well here in the US, I don't know, it may be as bad as Wii Music was. A music game competing with the likes of Harmonix's Rock Band and Activision's Guitar Hero.

I'm glad my brother buys this crap, he always gives me his old one. When we were kids, he got a gameboy pocket, I got a gameboy. He got a gameboy color, I got a gameboy pocket, when he got a gameboy advance, I got a gameboy color. Then, the good times started with GBA SD... I got a gameboy advance and was able to stay current. THen Nintendo nicely launched the DS lite fairly close to the DS and I got sent a DS, now I get a DS lite. KEEP UP YOUR GIMMIKY CRAP NINTENDO, FREE STUFF HERE I COME! Sometimes I wish my brother had been into PSPs.

$169.99 to me really isn't acceptable when a XBOX 360 without a hard drive is only thirty dollars more. I love my DS (fat) but no way am I going to buy this thing unless it is at least $140.

At $170, they are at the core PSP's price point. Should be interesting to see how this does.

Nintendo really needs to go the route of having some sort of Flash memory card and the ability to play SNES and NES games bought of the Wii channels. I would definately buy one of these if i can play SMB3, MM, BoF, Mother, and all the fun 8-16bit games on a portable. I dont know why they dont just release a cartridge and the DLable version at the same time. Having games on the GB, GBA, DS just makes it a pain when a game in on the GBA and you can't buy it for the DS.

Thats pretty much Nintendo's strategy now, design a system with all the features it SHOULD have, then strip it down to its bear essential and release it. You then slowly add the features it should have had in the first place through system revisions every year and a half or so. Everything they are adding to the DSI are things that should have been there in the first DS. I would have costed more? Yes, but less than having to purchase the same system 3 times to get them, since a lot of gamers will do just that, and those who don't still paid a similar price for the strip down version, so its a win win for them. The same thing is hapenning with the Wii, the Wiimote add on for better motion sensing? Thats the idea right? The only thing the Wii has over the gamecube is motion sensors, i think that should have been tuned up pretty good to begin with, but i guess its more profitable to sell add-ons. Oh yeah and Wii HD in 2011... Money whoring for basic functions. I sold my DS Lite and will not buy Nintendo Products ever again.

Why are people focusing on the Camera's, those aren't the real update. The real update is the new Firmware and the Application they can now do with the DS, This is honestly a huge update, but people just keep focusing on the gimmick part of it, and not the actual upgrade. do your research peole before you judge the system. The extra 40 dollars comes from the fact that you can now download games, as well all the other stuff. The GBA slot was just a waste of space. And if you love the GBA so much go spend the 20 dollars and go buy a used one. Stop ragging on Nintendo for upgrading their stuff and taking out the old useless stuff. ((Well not completely useless Guitar Hero doesn't work anymore but i'm ok with that.))

I see no real reason to get this console over the DSLite. In fact, I fail to see any reason to get this over the original model I have, I don't like small handhelds and that's why I've stuck with the old model since its initial release. The fact that it has no GBA port and gimmicky features means there's very little reason to get the DSi over an older model.

I was wondering when they were going to announce this for america. My DSlite is broken with the L and R Button, and my mic doesn't work ((i don't know what i did but damn)) Sooooo, this is really good for me, and because i have a gameboy micro ((and an sp although I don't see the need for it)) I really don't care that i'm loosing the GBA slot, mainly because no new games come out for it anyway. and it's not like it needed it anyway. THe camera's are a cool addition i guess, but what im excited about is the DSiWare shop thing, can't wait to try that out.

I have a DS Lite already. I think this DSi is a waste. I think Nintendo should stop trying to make a conntinuations of the DS. They should make somthing new. $170!!!!!! Just for a continuation of the DS? For the love of god it cost as much as a PSP!!!!!! There are many disadvantages of the DSi. The Cammera. big whom it is worse than a phone's. Battery. With the huge sceen it will suck out all the juice. And finnally the screen. The screen is way to huge think about it a normal DS game is for certain amount of pickcels. the huge screens wil mess it up it will be blurry. bottom line boys and girls do not waste yo money

I'm definitely passing on the DSi, especially now that I know how pricey it is. Amazingly, there's a few new games for the DS I want to get for the first time in a long while, but I still don't think it's worth replacing my old DS over, unless the mushy buttons really start to become a problem, which they HAVE... I'd take backwards compatibility over multimedia functionality, shorter battery life, and application store any day.

The Nintendo DSi could be considered an upgrade. One problem that Nintendo made; however, is that it can't play Game Boy Advance games anymore.

Um wow Nintendo. That price may as well own a PSP, has more featuers but only thing it doesn't have is a camera (which will prolly rarely get used) and Touch screen. To think Nintendo was competative with price wise when it came to the other consoles. For about little more ya can own a Wii which is alot of fun anyways. To me seems like reinventing the wheel just adding more spokes.

Who the hell cares about this "DSi"? It doesn't even play Gameboy Advance games. That takes about 25% out of the DS. I really hope no one buys this. What's the point? Camera? WHO CARES! I'd take Mario and Luigi Super Star Saga and Pokemon Firered over some lame camera-attachment anyday.

Holy Christ Nintendo. (I find it humorous that spellcheck marks Christ incorrect unless its capitalized.) How many times can you re-invent dated technology? Please, please, please boycott this new version. It offers nothing but a new pricetag for a camera that will rarely get used by developers. It sickens me that people will pay money for the latest turd attached to this machine. I thought Japan was supposed to be at the forefront of technology. Instead they try to cash in on the idiocy of the consumer. Do NOT pay for this dated machine!
