$170 DSi drops in US April 5

[UPDATE] Dual-camera-enabled third revision of handheld arrives stateside in less than two months alongside Rhythm Heaven; Nintendo plans to continue sales of DS Lite.

Since the DSi was first announced in October 2008, Nintendo has remained coy about its US release date. After saying only that the handheld would arrive in North America "well into 2009," the company announced last month that it would launch stateside "before summer."

Coming soon! (Seriously.)
Coming soon! (Seriously.)

Finally, this morning Nintendo announced that the DSi will arrive in the US on April 5 at a $169.99 price point. The handheld, which has been on sale in Japan since November 2008, will be available in black (pictured) and an all-new blue hue. Unfortunately, when contacted by GameSpot UK for a European announcement, Nintendo Europe declined to comment on the DSi's release in Europe, its final major territory.

Today's announcement also confirmed that the game Rhythm Heaven will make its American debut on April 5. The rhythm action game has proved to be incredibly popular in Japan, where it has sold 1.6 million copies after earlier versions proved popular in arcades and on the Game Boy Advance. GameSpot recently previewed the US version of the minigame collection.

Last but not least, Nintendo also announced that the DSiWare application will also be making its way to the US. The application lets owners of the portable download new software from the Internet a la the iPhone's App Store, with prices starting at 200 Nintendo points ($2). Nintendo declined to reveal any release-date information about DSiWare.

[UPDATE] Speaking with GameSpot, Nintendo said that it plans to continue to make and sell the DS Lite at its $129.99 price point in the US. "The DS Lite will continue to be supported at retail alongside the DSi," said a Nintendo of America rep. "The DSi is not meant to replace the other systems. There has been no news in terms of a price drop."

To find out more about the DSi, be sure to check out GameSpot's hands-on with the Japanese edition of the handheld.

That's pretty cool. Really, I'm just glad to see the video gaming industry experience few (if any) problems with this recession we're all going through. Give me DSi. Give me the new WiiHD. Give me whatever else ya got.

I've heard it hits Europe on April 3rd... But wait, that's impossible! That would mean the DSi is here before America?!?!? If only by two days, still there is a god! In England theres the hefty price tag of £150! Why do we always have to pay so much! I might trade my DS lite in to get a discount on this, I can use the GBA SP if I want to play GBA games

In 2002 or whenever the original version of the DS came out: "Nintendo does not plan to replace the GBA with the DS" or something like that...

@rephin: the changes for the DSi are fairly large (2 cameras, internal storage, more memory, an SD card slot, the DSiWare store, a built in browser, a redesigned home menu that doesn't require a restart for every change made, a better design, and slightly larger screens) I feel these changes warrant a price increase. sure, it's the same price as a PSP now, but the games are still cheaper. That's besides the original point you made. Your original point says that Sony's guilty of minor hardware revisions every once in a while, but Nintendo is free of this guilt just because they add a whole bunch of things we don't need in a gaming system. I never said the DSi revision wasn't large. What I am saying is that it was a pointless, expensive revision. The DS Lite didn't need fixing in the first place. At least Sony doesn't charge the consumer for upgrades/changes to the hardware. Do the math. The $50 markup from the DS Lite means the price of the system increased 38%. That is a huge markup. If Nintendo added a few new things to the Wii, then marked the price up 38% (which is $95, bringing the price point to $345), would you thank them for it? Of course not. This is the point - not too many people are willing to pay this new price of admission to upgrade their gaming system for a few new bells and whistles.

I already own a DS Lite, my mobile phone has a camera several times more powerful and my PSP 3000 does everything else that the DSi can. Nah, Nintendo can keep it. I'm not forking over such a huge amount of money on technology that I already own and then some. I'll just use the money to buy about 7 or 8 games instead.

Besides, I decided not to get a DS Lite because I knew something like this would probably happen, given nintendo's history with handhelds(both the GB and GBA had 3 versions made).

Wow, just today I got a flyer from Gamestop telling me to trade in my old DS for a new DS Lite. I bet they are trying to reduce their stock.

I find it funny that so many people complain about this new version of the DS when sony makes even more minor changes between versions The difference here is, Sony doesn't give their revisions a $50 markup.

Ok, guys. Some of you don't seem to understand economics. Let me break it down for you. They're releasing the DSi because it's been a few years since the last DS revision and the PSP is starting to actually gain some ground in Japan and the US. However, since it's so expensive to produce and ship to America due to the current economic crisis, they have to give it a higher price point. In addition, they don't want to close off the "cheap parents" income, so they'll keep selling the DS lite so the parents that don't know better think they're getting the same thing and saving money by buying the DS lite. And please stop nagging about the DSi. It's not simply "DS + camera". It has 2 cameras(3MP external and .3MP internal), music playback, net browsing(though still about as bad as the DS Lite browser), DSWare, the possibility of Virtual Handheld(AKA, pocket Virtual Console), an SDHC card slot and the firmware can be updated. In other words, it's got stuff you guys begged for since the DS came out. Sure, it ditched the GBA port, but are you honestly telling me you think they can't make add-ons for the DSi without it? Think outside the port.

Enemy, ya the pocket protector thing was a stereotype, but I was just using it as one example. I just think it's a shame a lot of people still have a negative perception of gamers. It is funny how some people really respect you until they find out you play games. Then they're like, "That dude must be a loser or a man-child". I consider something like Facebook more nerdy than playing games.

I probably won't get one. I love having a GBA port on my DSL, plus I just don't have $170 to go throwing around at something I mostly own already. Cool idea though.

Looks immensely interesting, but due to my tight budget and me being forced to keep my DSL (no GBA slot? how lame is that? I was hoping to be able to sell the DSL and use the funds for DSi), I probably won't get this until I find a game that is REALLY worth upgrading for.

How do these hardware manufacturers manage such high numbers for their installed bases? Because they re release what is basically the same hardware with minor improvements over and over again. Game Boy Advance Micro anyone?

I think this looks great- I've got my DS Phat so this'll be a good upgrade. I really can't stand the people that are hating on the camera. Some people don't have cameras- like me. Plus, this camera is more meant for gaming than anything. Haven't you guys heard of the new DSi WarioWare game that uses the camera to put you in the microgames? That's cool stuff right there. And if you're really into your GBA games, they've got GBA's at gamespot for like $10. Not a huge deal. Personally I don't see the appeal of the PSP. I already have an mp3 player and the camera- well everyone here already seems to have one! Yes, the graphics are good and all, but that's not as important to me as the games. The DS has much more variety in the game department- and it's much more innovative and unique in the gameplay department. Oh well. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I think that by october this year they should lower the price of the dslite to $99. That would put them in a more comfortable position, over their competition...is there any competition? Anyway, i'd rather wait a few years for their next gen handheld

Good they are still keeping the Lite. Some people still want to be able to play GBA games and $170 is too steep for a handheld.

I'm still surprised the DS Lite hasn't dropped its price. Though it's still selling millions, just like the Wii is. So Nintendo doesn't need to.
