Injustice: Gods Among Us Review

  • First Released Apr 3, 2013
    released
  • X360

Injustice provides a complex fighter with some unique twists, but is found wanting in features that have become commonplace in its contemporaries.

When it comes to superheroes-turned-street fighters, DC Comics' stable of superfriends have always received the short end of the stick. While Marvel enjoys the steady success of Capcom's legendary Vs. series, the likes of Justice League Task Force and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe have not done DC any favors. Injustice: Gods Among Us, the latest fighter from the house of Mortal Kombat, aims to break this combo with a fighting system that builds upon the lessons of MK, while also introducing a few new tricks. But for all its complexities, Injustice unfortunately falls short when compared to its contemporaries.

Now Playing: Injustice: Gods Among Us - Video Review

If you are familiar with Mortal Kombat, you will feel right at home in Injustice. Character movement has that same deliberate, staccato style that's distinct from the fighting genre's Japanese-developed counterparts. That style feeds into the satisfying weight and brutality of each attack, whether it's Bane breaking you over his knee or Hawkgirl taking her mace to your face. Controlling these characters feels powerful, and the destruction you bring upon your opponent and the environment add excitement to each fight.

While MK and Injustice have a similar feel, their underlying mechanics are very different. Injustice has three attack buttons and a special trait button. Whether it's flight, healing, or a simple strength boost, these traits are unique to each fighter and play into their particular abilities and histories. The distinctions are clearly apparent, and don't just boil down to slightly altered punches and kicks.

Clashes are another interesting mechanic. When activated, they instantly interrupt a combo, and then both players secretly spend an amount of their super meter. If the fighter who initiated the clash spends more, he regains health proportional to the amount spent; otherwise, he takes damage proportional to what his opponent spent. Clashes can be used only once per round, per character, and only if the initiator is down to his second health bar. The threat of a clash adds an interesting dynamic to the back half of a fight. It forces you to constantly reevaluate how much meter to save and spend based on what your opponent has stored.

While clashes are only a two-time threat, Injustice's interactive backgrounds are a constant hazard. Peppered throughout each stage are items--a missile here, a motorcycle there--for characters to use. Different characters use these items in different ways. Some use these objects as weapons to be smashed over an opponent's head, while others use them as springboards to quickly navigate the arena. These items are a fun way to augment your fighter's arsenal and take stage awareness to a new extreme. Knowing that a combo could put your opponent near a deadly item might make you think twice before launching your assault.

Injustice does not have rounds. Instead, you have two health bars, and when they run out the match is over.
Injustice does not have rounds. Instead, you have two health bars, and when they run out the match is over.

It's too bad that so many characters simply destroy these background objects. A stone tablet that Batman can spring off of to reach the other side of the screen, Superman just smashes. Superman--along with the game's other heavyweights--smashes almost everything he touches. In some stages, it is too easy to smash all of the interactive objects early on simply to deny your opponent their functions. This is especially troublesome for characters with limited mobility options who need these items to compensate for their shortcomings.

The story in Injustice--while grand in scope--is also full of shortcomings. This lengthy tale presents a world where Superman has reached his limit after being tricked into murdering his pregnant wife and unborn child, thereby triggering a nuclear bomb--which was linked to Lois' heartbeat--in the center of Metropolis. It is a premise so ridiculous it borders on parody, but it's presented in all seriousness. The cracks quickly begin to show as this narrative labors under the weight of finding new reasons for characters to stand around punching each other. By the end, you're left wondering how the game could treat this cornball story with such unblinking reverence.

The alternate control option changes the move inputs to a Street Fighter style.
The alternate control option changes the move inputs to a Street Fighter style.

If you're new to fighting games, you'll find Injustice's educational options disappointingly sparse. An extremely basic tutorial runs first-time fighters through the fundamentals, and that's it. There's a practice mode, but any information on fighting game theory or character-specific instructions is left to independent study. The S.T.A.R. Labs missions, Injustice's version of MK's challenge tower, offer some character-specific instruction, but are more of an enjoyable distraction than a way to prepare for real combat.

To further compound the confusion, other, lesser features are left completely unexplained. Tucked away in the controller settings menu are options for release check and alternate control. Both can significantly impact how you play, but you are on your own to figure out how. The largest omission lies in the frame data. This data provides useful insight into the properties of each move, but unless you know what startup frames and block advantage are, it's not going to do you much good. And, once again, the game offers zero insight.

Online, Injustice offers the basics of player and ranked matches, along with the option to practice online with a friend. Player match options let you fight one-on-one, in a king-of-the-hill style or a survival mode. Unfortunately, replay support is a glaring omission. While players in the same lobby can spectate matches, there is no way to record and replay other fights. Replays can offer fantastic insight for players of all skill levels on how to play their favorite fighters, but their absence further compounds Injustice's educational deficiencies. Matches against opponents within a three- or four-bar connection range run without serious delay. However, falling below this connection range can cause some noticeable lag between inputting a command and having it appear in the game.

Leveling up your account unlocks music, concept art, and costumes.
Leveling up your account unlocks music, concept art, and costumes.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is a hard-hitting fighter that plays to the hardcore crowd. Its creative use of background objects coupled with satisfying fighting mechanics make it both fun and distinct from it contemporaries. But for newer players, the minimal instruction modes and disappointing story provide little incentive for your sustained interest. And the absence of replay support is a loss for everyone involved. Injustice is an enjoyable fighter but as a whole, the package is found wanting.

The Good

  • Brutal presentation makes you feel powerful
  • New mechanics build upon Mortal Kombat's foundation in creative ways
  • S.T.A.R. Labs missions are a fun distraction.

The Bad

  • Minimal educational tools
  • Disappointingly dull story
  • Lacks replay support.

This review is not at all accurate, the reviewer is just bashing it because it is for the hardcore fans!but its not,the gameplay has similar mechanics to MK which means it is much more accessible to the gamers. The tutorial system is fleshed out as the movesets of all the fighters are present in the menu the players just need to apply something called MINDS!! Gamespot your reviews are being too harsh without substance.PSY(sigh)

@sharingan1997 The word "Accurate" has no meaning when one is talking about a review. Reviewers can only share their own opinions, based on their own experiences with the game. It is not the job of a reviewer to check around for what other people think first, then make sure that certain interested groups will be satisfied with the result.

Have to say this review comes as a surprise. Everyone else is saying the story is even better than MK9, and the story in MK9 was pretty freaking great! And frankly even if it wasn't, how many fighting game have good story modes anyway? The only one I can think of is MK. As for the lack of super in depth tutorials, how many fighting games provide that again? Not many. In fact there are zero that come to mind. Not Street Fighter. Not Tekken. Not MVC. Though come to think of it DOA5 explained a hell of a lot during the course of the story mode. That hardly represents the majority though.

Fighting games generally run you through the basics and nothing more, if that. In fact it's often less than that. Doesn't seem like this game is lacking tutorial wise compared to many other fighters. I mean you complain that it's not explained what stuff like frame data is, but how many other fighting games even bother to list frame data at all, let alone for every move? I agree it would have been nice if it explained what things like this were, but considering how it's hardly a fighting game standard it shouldn't really impact the score like this. Same thing for IF the story mode is lacking. And that's a big if considering what I've read elsewhere.

Pretty much every negative you mentioned is par for the course in fighting games, and if you're going to lower the score for this game for those reasons you might as well do the same for every fighting game. I'm sure the game isn't perfect, but all the flaws you talk about are present in almost every fighting game.

Yea, this game is amazing. I don't really care about the story, however, just the whole change of saying good bye to round 1 fight and waiting for the next round to load up is a huge change for netherealm. I think it is unique in most ways, but a 7 is not what this game deserves. I would say an 8 and 8.5 being max.

What the ****?! This game is AMAZING if you were looking for something similar to Mortal Kombat, except its unique in its execution and in depth in its lore. I can't believe it couldn't even earn the same as the last MK's score....

Are we really criticizing a fighting game for its story? Like really?!?! When has this ever been a serious critique for this genre? Show me a man who buys this for a story. Show me one and I'll show you a fool!

@jmace1 How on Earth can we criticize a fighting game for it's story? They should criticize the graphics though.

Indeed, the fighting games genre would be one of the last places I would look for a good story. I haven't played Injustice, but I have a hard time imagining story as one of its main components.

@mickey_mickey48 This is the same guy that reviewed MvC3? Oh wow. This guy has zero credibility whatsoever. How one can heavily criticise this game for a supposedly disappointing story(which frankly I seriously doubt is true) and complain it doesn't have enough in depth tutorials but praise something like MvV3 is just....wow. This review cannot be taken seriously.

I never play online or professionally anyway. So a replay function, or frame counting is wasted on me. And I spent time in practise learning the characters moves. That's good enough for me. They don't need to include a training tool that teaches you how to play fighting games at a professional level. It's not their job to do that. You can't fault a game for not including something they shouldn't be expected to include in the first place.

Like everybody in gaming is interested in "professional level". It's just a joke to promote games. So, if chess is not in the Olympics, I should stop playing because it's not in the main sport event? I even don't like e-sports. "Competition to who uses a software better than other". I would be one of the best in Excel...

What's wrong with a ridiculous storyline in a fighting game, what's this guy comparing with? As far as I know, all other fighting games except for MK had a snorefest single player mode. Blazblue, while a great game, receives 8+, 9+ scores and has frikkin text pop ups and hideous ***->eng translation. Persona 4 Arena is exactly the same.

What about games like Street Fighter and Tekken. Are they so much better than this game? Well, if you think so, then I'd have to dissapoint, those games had a horrible storyline that is so far beyond this game in terms of how ridiculous they are, they're barely worth mentioning.

And then we're talking about replays, a feature I'm sure 99% of people playing the game would never know it exists if it was actually incorporated. Is suddenly game-breaking.

And last point, educational options? They were necessairy for games like Virtual Fighter that have incredibly complex mechanics. This is a pick up and play game where the mechanics get clear after you've put some time and effort into it. Not every game needs a pre-installed game guide installed.

lol, classic gamespot.

I think they have a new system in place in order to make their reviews and site seem more credible.

Take the score and subtract 1 to 2 points.

Or they just have giant dildos on every chair and that's why it seems like everyone has a stick up they a$$.

....I remember the good old days of gamespot. When it was actually about the games.....and not making some sort of point.

@Nightmare97661 I agree. I was watching the live stream yesterday and was shocked at how little these guys know about games. The said that the 2D Sub-Zero adventure game on PS1 was Special Forces, then corrected themselves and said it was Shaolin Monks. WTF! It was MK: Mythologies! Their only freakin job is to know video games, and they can't even do that right!

This is a deeply flawed review. Not the score but the comments by the reviewer, "poor educational tools", the game has the option to display a move list on the screen whilst playing, I can not think of another fighting game which has done that. The reviewer says something along the lines of the story is far fetched, well it is a game based on comic books, what would you expect? It seems like lazy reviewing to me.

i dont trust this review at all. Gameinformer are more harsh than gamespot and they gave it a 9?

And honest.. all reviews ive read so far have stated that the campaign is great ? Their are not enough bad reasons in this review for the game to get a 7.

This review is not consistent with any of the other reviews , it seems to contradict all other reviews by the pros ?

Sorry this is a bad review.

So lets get this straight, does the creator designer of the game have to do a live interview in order for you to give them a 9 ?

More and More i begin to distrust gamespot reviews.

@DARKKNIGHTPRABZ Gameinformer harsh? is this a joke? Gameinformer is probably the least harshing reviewing site I have ever seen. They gave dead space 3 an 9.75/10 when other reviews gave it about an 8. They gave Duke nukem forever a 6.75/10 while other reviews were much lower. They even gave Mass Effect 3, Bioshock Infinite, and God of War 3 a perfect 10. Almost every review I see from them is an 8 or higher. Gamespot rarely ever gives a game a 9/10 or higher.

Yeah, this is a bad review. He's wrong about so much. The story is good and actually makes sense of why the characters are fighting when normally they wouldn't be. This game's tutorial was easy to understand and succeed in completing the moves/combos. It has a tonne of 1Player replay value with the S.T.A.R.S. Missions, which make you want to get 3 stars on all of them, plus the dozen or so battle modes you can complete. The breakables replenish in some areas and you shouldn't rely on them anyway, so his complaints are an INJUSTICE to the actual gameplay. Characters feel powerful, designs are cool, the supers are spectacles, and the I give this game an 8.5.

It's not like MK ever really offered much in the way of instruction. Folks who want to learn the in's and out's of a move set will do it through experimentation, and people who're just in it for a good time will mash until they get to a point they're comfortable just like before. I think people know what they're getting into on either front with a Netherealm's game by now.

It irritates me when people keep complaining about the scores games get on Gamespot. 7 is not "borderline mediocre". Just because most games journalists use a score that ranges from 7-10 instead of 1-10, doesn't mean that something that scores a 6 for instance on Gamespot is a terrible game. Look how rarely a game scores a 10 on here, theres a good reason for that.

This is my favorite part:

“a premise so ridiculous it borders on parody”

What’s not ridiculous however is a man, who as a infant, was catapulted from his home world (which was another planet, which then exploded), landed in rural Kansas, probably dabbled in farming for a bit before settling into journalism. Oh, and he can also fly, shoot infrared from his eyes and once battled an invincible rocks-for-bones monster until they both died. That’s a true story.

i like it. the moves are hard hitting, which is really good in a fighting game. the characters movements are fluid and fast.

the sound effects are really cool.

the environments are interactive and you can get knocked out of arenas and into totally different places.

If you've ever watched the justice league cartoons with the over the top fights this game is just like that.

I still can't see how Batman can beat Super Powered God like characters like Black Adam who upon his intro flies in from outer space...

i just don't get that. Don't get me wrong Batman is a bad ass, but come on lol he's out of his league against some of these villans and heroes...

Meh, if you like Superheroes and their crazy abilities it's fun anyway...
