Injustice: Gods Among Us Review

  • First Released Apr 3, 2013
    released
  • X360

Injustice provides a complex fighter with some unique twists, but is found wanting in features that have become commonplace in its contemporaries.

When it comes to superheroes-turned-street fighters, DC Comics' stable of superfriends have always received the short end of the stick. While Marvel enjoys the steady success of Capcom's legendary Vs. series, the likes of Justice League Task Force and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe have not done DC any favors. Injustice: Gods Among Us, the latest fighter from the house of Mortal Kombat, aims to break this combo with a fighting system that builds upon the lessons of MK, while also introducing a few new tricks. But for all its complexities, Injustice unfortunately falls short when compared to its contemporaries.

Now Playing: Injustice: Gods Among Us - Video Review

If you are familiar with Mortal Kombat, you will feel right at home in Injustice. Character movement has that same deliberate, staccato style that's distinct from the fighting genre's Japanese-developed counterparts. That style feeds into the satisfying weight and brutality of each attack, whether it's Bane breaking you over his knee or Hawkgirl taking her mace to your face. Controlling these characters feels powerful, and the destruction you bring upon your opponent and the environment add excitement to each fight.

While MK and Injustice have a similar feel, their underlying mechanics are very different. Injustice has three attack buttons and a special trait button. Whether it's flight, healing, or a simple strength boost, these traits are unique to each fighter and play into their particular abilities and histories. The distinctions are clearly apparent, and don't just boil down to slightly altered punches and kicks.

Clashes are another interesting mechanic. When activated, they instantly interrupt a combo, and then both players secretly spend an amount of their super meter. If the fighter who initiated the clash spends more, he regains health proportional to the amount spent; otherwise, he takes damage proportional to what his opponent spent. Clashes can be used only once per round, per character, and only if the initiator is down to his second health bar. The threat of a clash adds an interesting dynamic to the back half of a fight. It forces you to constantly reevaluate how much meter to save and spend based on what your opponent has stored.

While clashes are only a two-time threat, Injustice's interactive backgrounds are a constant hazard. Peppered throughout each stage are items--a missile here, a motorcycle there--for characters to use. Different characters use these items in different ways. Some use these objects as weapons to be smashed over an opponent's head, while others use them as springboards to quickly navigate the arena. These items are a fun way to augment your fighter's arsenal and take stage awareness to a new extreme. Knowing that a combo could put your opponent near a deadly item might make you think twice before launching your assault.

Injustice does not have rounds. Instead, you have two health bars, and when they run out the match is over.
Injustice does not have rounds. Instead, you have two health bars, and when they run out the match is over.

It's too bad that so many characters simply destroy these background objects. A stone tablet that Batman can spring off of to reach the other side of the screen, Superman just smashes. Superman--along with the game's other heavyweights--smashes almost everything he touches. In some stages, it is too easy to smash all of the interactive objects early on simply to deny your opponent their functions. This is especially troublesome for characters with limited mobility options who need these items to compensate for their shortcomings.

The story in Injustice--while grand in scope--is also full of shortcomings. This lengthy tale presents a world where Superman has reached his limit after being tricked into murdering his pregnant wife and unborn child, thereby triggering a nuclear bomb--which was linked to Lois' heartbeat--in the center of Metropolis. It is a premise so ridiculous it borders on parody, but it's presented in all seriousness. The cracks quickly begin to show as this narrative labors under the weight of finding new reasons for characters to stand around punching each other. By the end, you're left wondering how the game could treat this cornball story with such unblinking reverence.

The alternate control option changes the move inputs to a Street Fighter style.
The alternate control option changes the move inputs to a Street Fighter style.

If you're new to fighting games, you'll find Injustice's educational options disappointingly sparse. An extremely basic tutorial runs first-time fighters through the fundamentals, and that's it. There's a practice mode, but any information on fighting game theory or character-specific instructions is left to independent study. The S.T.A.R. Labs missions, Injustice's version of MK's challenge tower, offer some character-specific instruction, but are more of an enjoyable distraction than a way to prepare for real combat.

To further compound the confusion, other, lesser features are left completely unexplained. Tucked away in the controller settings menu are options for release check and alternate control. Both can significantly impact how you play, but you are on your own to figure out how. The largest omission lies in the frame data. This data provides useful insight into the properties of each move, but unless you know what startup frames and block advantage are, it's not going to do you much good. And, once again, the game offers zero insight.

Online, Injustice offers the basics of player and ranked matches, along with the option to practice online with a friend. Player match options let you fight one-on-one, in a king-of-the-hill style or a survival mode. Unfortunately, replay support is a glaring omission. While players in the same lobby can spectate matches, there is no way to record and replay other fights. Replays can offer fantastic insight for players of all skill levels on how to play their favorite fighters, but their absence further compounds Injustice's educational deficiencies. Matches against opponents within a three- or four-bar connection range run without serious delay. However, falling below this connection range can cause some noticeable lag between inputting a command and having it appear in the game.

Leveling up your account unlocks music, concept art, and costumes.
Leveling up your account unlocks music, concept art, and costumes.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is a hard-hitting fighter that plays to the hardcore crowd. Its creative use of background objects coupled with satisfying fighting mechanics make it both fun and distinct from it contemporaries. But for newer players, the minimal instruction modes and disappointing story provide little incentive for your sustained interest. And the absence of replay support is a loss for everyone involved. Injustice is an enjoyable fighter but as a whole, the package is found wanting.

The Good

  • Brutal presentation makes you feel powerful
  • New mechanics build upon Mortal Kombat's foundation in creative ways
  • S.T.A.R. Labs missions are a fun distraction.

The Bad

  • Minimal educational tools
  • Disappointingly dull story
  • Lacks replay support.

They should just take the numbers away, and make you read the review to come up with your own conclusion. The things that he disliked about the game does not apply to me.

I don't need an elaborate tutorial. I remember back when MK 1 came out in arcades. No one knew how to do the moves or fatalities. That was the beauty of it. You would try things out, or ask someone, or these days, just search the net. Part of the excitement is figuring out the move set, and then perfecting it.

The story is cool, considering it's a fighter based on a comic book. And who cares about replay? All in all, I think it's one of the best fighters that's come out in a while.

Hmm... I know comic books have some "far fetched" stories so why would a fighting game based on comic book characters story be any different? Hell, Superman's heel turn is pretty interesting to me.. a dead Lois Lane? Sign me up and I'm not even a real big fighter/comic book guy.

Mixed review are making me a little hesitant to buy the game. Been a fighting game fan since the days of "Karate Champ". I don't want another Mortal Kombat vs. DC type game; not for 60 big ones. Especially with "Dead Island: Riptide" dropping next week and "Thale" coming out on blu-ray next week as well. I do have some trade fodder though. If I indulge, I am going with the Wii U version probably; you can play just on the gamepad if you want to; even though no graphical differences between all 3 versions. I played the demo and honestly, I was not that impressed with it. The interactive stages are really cool though. But a game like this should have a TON of characters though. Where's Firestorm, Apache Chief, Cheetah, Grod, Samurai, Black Manta, Toy Man, Hawkman, etc. etc. etc.?

I'm not in to fighting games. I think they can get boring if not repetitive. But I love DC so this game is really enjoyable. Would love to win a game online...

Dude, during college, I wouldn't mind getting a 7 or a 8 grade, because both would make me pass, so that was ok...
But with game reviews, 1, or 1.5 points in the score is the end of the world as we know it... Grow up, gamespotter readers.
In the big world, most people will have different ideas then you.
Don't oblige Max or any reviewer to have the same idea as you.

To say that this game has minimal educational tools is just showing that not enough attention was given to the full game for this review. There are plenty of modes and menu options that basically tell you any possible thing you would need to learn to improve your playing ability with this game.

@TheAlphaAndOmeg People don't understand that Gamespot is not a niche game review website. That's why Braid gets a 9 and Injustice gets a 7... Fighting games is a niche kinda of game, we can't deny. It's like sports games, RPGs... It's hard to compare it to other genres, but Gamespot has to do it, because they are not niche! If your thing is fighting games, go to the forums of http://shoryuken.com/ and ask people there their opinion about Injustice

@meatz666 @TheAlphaAndOmeg Gamespot doesn't compare fighting games to other genres. And the way they score games is they compare it to other games in the same class. So Braid getting a 9 and Injustice getting a 7 are two completely different things. Braid was scored relative to other downloadable or arcade platformers and Injustice is compared with other modern fighters. You may have an indie game like Fez score higher than a GTA game. That doesn't mean Gamespot thinks the indie game is superior to GTA. It's all relative to the genre.

@Vodoo @meatz666 @TheAlphaAndOmeg I totally agree with context. That's why you have games that "age well" and don't "age well". Example:
- I find playing SF2 a pain in the ass. The graphics sucks, the gameplay is kinda clunky compared to the games that came after, and the sound is ridiculous.

Mario 64 is still one of the best action platform that I ever played. Got another day in emulator and had so much fun. Ok, the 3d engine is dated, but the sound is great, the "its me, Mario!" is still fun to hear, and fight the minions, do the jumping puzzles, fight the big ones, flying... It's a hell of a game. If it was released today, I don't doubt that would be a 8... Now SF2?

@Vodoo @meatz666 @TheAlphaAndOmeg I agree and disagree. I don't think gamespot separates their score by genre, they normally tend to go for the full package. They give high score to Skyrim, GTA and Red Dead, for example, because those games were huge, great storyline, gameplay, etc. See, they wouldn't give the 2012 GOTY to Journey if we follow your line of thought. But, I do agree that games should be scored by their niche. But as I said before, GS is not a niche site. Is a general site. When I want to buy a new game, I order by best, check the genre, and watch reviews, gameplays, and the comments of you dudes. Then I make the purchase. If it was separated by genre, we would have Tekken and SF4 with 9, MvsC3 and MK with 8.5... Again, my opinion... :)

@Sauvent @SkamArtist @Vodoo @meatz666 @TheAlphaAndOmeg Context? It wasn't a good game then, and it's not a good game now. The game didn't get any worse. I do understand hindsight, but if the argument is that games are compared to others in it's genre, then you have to compare MK vs DC to Injustice. And Injustice, by far, is a better game.

@SkamArtist @Vodoo @meatz666 @TheAlphaAndOmeg Context. MK vs DC was released years ago. If that game is released now, it would probably get a 6.0 or so.

@Vodoo @meatz666 @TheAlphaAndOmeg Yeah, but they gave MK vs. DC a higher score than this. So based on that, Injustice should be a 9.

Frame Data is displayed in the game Max. Go to Practice mode, highlight a move and you will see frame data on the right side of the screen. Also the Practice mode gives a description of what the move does with or without meter use.

Honestly I was not expecting much from the story and am happy to say that I was blown away at how it was presented. The narrative as well was greatly done. This is the first fighting game in a long time that I actually could not put the controller down because I was having so much fun.

@dbene It matters to me - I've never really played fighting games, but I like DC comics. Arkham Asylum and Arkham City are the only decent games up to now featuring a DC character, but I had high hopes for Injustice. If it had offered a good story, good solo mode and was beginner-friendly, I might have bought it. Now I think I'll pass.

I am not one of those people who think "omg a 7, what a horrible score!!" as I think most games are in the 7 to 8 range. However... after spending most of yesterday playing Injustice, I can say that it is an excellent fighter. I disagree with most of the criticisms Maxwell had, but hey that's the beauty of opinions.

The game's story is.... hm, how do I say this, it's a typical Justice League cartoon plot. The twist is interesting, but it's a shame that it's shown right at the start of the story mode. That bad Superman? Yeah, you'll find out why in the beginning of the game. Everything else after that is exactly what you will expect. The heroes will always win. Good story I say, this is great for a Justice League cartoon movie, a 2 hour 30 minute movie. In fact that's how long the game's story mode is, but it's a very badass ride. Every Justice league members are badasses here. The game itself is Mortal Kombat 9 + Dead or Alive with DC characters. This is the only big fighting game this year and it is a great one, so you guys can buy it and be happy with it. If you like Mortal Kombat, you'll like this. Just don't expect fatalities cause there are none.

Oh yeah, one more thing, if you guys own an Iphone, you should download the Injustice game. It's free and it's just like Batman City Lockdown, only with DC characters, team battle mode where you're able to switch players mid combat and the super move lists of the console versions like when Batman uses his car. Surprising how great it looks on the Iphone.

From what I have played so far this game IMO beats MKs latest entry. I am a huge fan of DC, I believe Netherrealm did an awesome job bringing this to life. definitely did a solid by making up for the MK V. DC atrocity. 8 - 8.5 is where this should be
