SOE accounts, credit card info compromised

[UPDATE] Sony Online Entertainment confirms info on 10,700 European bank records may be stolen along with credit card details of nearly 13,000 and personal info for 24.6 million customers after games, websites taken down.

Trouble seemed to be afoot at Sony Online Entertainment this morning, when the publisher brought game servers and websites related to its portfolio of massively multiplayer online games offline. As suspected, SOE has now confirmed that it, too, has suffered a security breach similar to the one plaguing the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services.

24.6 million SOE accounts have been compromised.
24.6 million SOE accounts have been compromised.

In a statement issued to GameSpot, SOE has now confirmed that approximately 24.6 million accounts as well as 12,700 non-US credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates may have been stolen. The information may have been obtained by hackers between April 16 and 17, and SOE believes that it was part of the initial attack that compromised the PSN and Qriocity service.

"This information, which was discovered by engineers and security consultants reviewing SOE systems, showed that personal information from approximately 24.6 million SOE accounts may have been stolen, as well as certain information from an outdated database from 2007," the statement reads. "The information from the outdated database that may have been stolen includes approximately 12,700 non-US credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes), and about 10,700 direct debit records of certain customers in Austria, Germany, Netherlands, and Spain."

[UPDATE] As SOE had previously noted, the credit card information that may have been stolen as part of the attack was taken from an outdated database. Today, the online games publisher told GameSpot that of the 12,700 compromised numbers, only about 900 were still valid.

Of the 24.6 million compromised accounts, SOE said that hackers may have obtained names, addresses, e-mail addresses, birth dates, genders, phone numbers, login names, and passwords. SOE noted that the password data is stored in a hashed form and not plain text.

The foreign direct debit record information includes bank account numbers, customer names, account names, and customer addresses. The breach was discovered as Sony's engineers and outside consultants reviewed SOE's system in the wake of the attack on the PSN and Qriocity services.

According to SOE, the 24.6 million accounts were not game-specific. Games that fall under the publishing label include EverQuest, EverQuest 2, DC Universe Online, Free Realms, Star Wars Galaxies, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, and PlanetSide.

SOE said that it would add 30 days of free game time to current customers' subscriptions to make up for the service interruption. The publisher also promised that it would be offering a one-for-one match of free game time for each day that servers are offline.

@BlackSpark_07 Im sorry, who has a faster processor? Fyi, i have both the 360 and a PS3, and it really doesnt matter. Its just that PS3 has better graphics, while the 360 is hyped up with good online. Besides that, they are virtually the same system, tho a real gamer would appreciate a PS3, cuz the 360 has all those unecessary online features up in your face, while the ps3 has them, it just doesnt force them on u like that. Also, did u even read this? "12,700 NON-US credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates MAY HAVE BEEN stolen." Non us... may have been. Sounds to me like u r a 360 fanboy and therefore arent welcome here. :) They hack PS3 first becuz its worth hacking becuz of its hardware. Then they hit up the 360, just to see if it worked. Ur reasoning for the 360 being better is one of the many reasons why it isnt. Thank u and have a nice day :D

And my friends laugh at me because I have Xbox and "you have to pay to play", paying doesnt sound bad when you compare it to loosing play days AND CCard info. But like the sony fans say: Its free!!! Who's laughing now??? Jerks...

Thank God I didn't give my Card info to Sony. Remedial bastards can't even keep info secure. I'm sure alot of people think the same thing could happen to Microsoft. But it hasn't and there is much more to garnish if someone were to hack them. Stop swinging from Sony's nuts people

@Swedish_Chef Well first off, the majority wouldn't have their lives ruined by identity theft. Maybe 25 years ago, but not now. More accurately, their lives would be made a good deal more problematic for a time. And yes, it IS easier to get a card in someone's name than people think, but it's definitely harder than forms of identification (e.g. license and SS card or the like), numbers alone won't do. And though credit cards are a bit easier to get, they're proportionally easier to deal with in the event of identity theft. No matter how menacing you make it sound, it's not the ruination of anyone's life. At worst, it's a pain in the ass for a few million people. People I would feel sorry for, but not people I'd be seriously worried about.

I think the funny thing in all of this is how people think Sony is personally treating them poorly, by not communicating the issue instantly. I'd like to ask everyone here if they really truely believe that Microsoft or Nintendo would handle this any differently. Do you really think Microsoft would be instantly forthcoming with all the nitty gritty details of their paid service getting hacked. Obviously the answer is NO. They certainly want to investigate the severity of the breach before freaking everyone out that their credit info has be compromised. Some people are acting like Sony is doing nothing. I assure everyone here that this is not the case. Hackers are a real problem in todays world and this is not the 1st time we've heard of major corporations being hacked. It's just unfortunate that it had to happen to a company who's main demographic is a much younger audience, where sometime rational thinking goes out the window. There is no doubt that this situation sucks for everyone. The hacker included, seeing as how they will be caught eventually.

Who knows what the state of their online service & their MMO's will be once their servers go back up, and it really sucks because this was pretty much a critical time frame for how well DCUO was going to last with the first major update. I think this interruption due to the hackers will not bode well for its MMO's, especially with how relatively well Rift has done since its launch.

@SuperWilfred02 Eh?! Its only Europe right? You do know more people live in Europe than your 'haven' US right? Don't downplay this event, this could affect a lot of people and why it is only non-US people should be told right away. - Is there more encryption involved in US database for some reason? If so - why? If needed - get the EU to first fine them and secondly put the same law across all the EU countries to give same level of protection as US.

Alot of people are blaming Sony and I just dont get why. Yeah security couldve been better but seriously, when the hackers started having their little fit, they lashed out at us just as much as Sony. Hackers are the real punks here, not Sony. Pull your head out of your arse and look, we got an army of anti-social, no lifes who are ruining our video games. Gather your torches and pitch forks people!

Epic fail beyond belief. Bank details and debit card details? That's a no-no Sony. Though in Britain as the information commissioner officer is involved, you will probably just get a slap in the wrist.

I really think they should invest the money of those free stuff they giving in calling/emailing the ppl that could be affected -_-

Some people can't live without online for 2 weeks so they get a new console. There are many other things you can do online. Like me chatting here right now. And have yout ever tried xat.com? you can chat there, no download and free. Try using another console that you alredy have, like my 3DS. Try playing sports and hit the streets. Try calling your friends. Try playing single player. Read a book. Study for tests. Play with your pets. There are really a lot of more things to do.

Sony is going to be facing a war with legislatures, the players themselves, and primarily the entire hacking world for the next several years. Don't expect Sony to make a PS4 anytime soon. They will become the poorest gaming company in the world because of this. Who's going to want to give Sony their credit cards? At least 30% less people, and probably far more than this expectation, considering that it's been on the news as well. Also, a lot of people I know have already traded in their PS3s. Hardcore gamers aren't going to wait. The loyal "fans" aren't even receiving proper respect and they're still willing to bet that Sony will have a stronger online service? Nope. They're already having to pay 10 billion dollars in damages, deal with a lawsuit, and lose a large percentage of their fanbase in a blink of an eye. How, with so much money loss, are they going to make it better? Besides, full functionality of the PSN won't be up until the END of May. Seriously, Sony screwed up. I knew from the start that PSN was terrible, but to be hacked and become a pathetic embarrassment was the last straw for me. Even if they have their single-player games, they're done with multiplayer. Period.

It truly sucks but I don't think xbox is any safer either, this could happen to xbox too. Good thing PSN allows you to play with whatever info you add, thanks to the free PSN I can use whatever address I please. Now if my 2 xbox360's didn't have red lights of death, I would play xbox live, but both are dead sitting next to my PS3. Both are great systems but I prefer SONY PS3( a lot less quieter too). This sucks for PS3, but I can live without online videogames for a couple weeks.

How the hell can people aford to be racist when like millions of inocent ppl can get their lives ruined? I won't ever trust any US based or related service in my whole life...

@PixelAddic Um.. ahem, yeah, it is kinda your fault since it's YOUR freaking money! Wow... you're entrusting a company that had not seen this coming, and you're bashing on them because someone made through their security system, even though it happens more than you know??? Forgive me for laughing out loud, but LOL. You're putting all the blame on the company when you put your own money at risk. You don't make sense because you have a strong sense of being right and don't want to admit that I am right. I said part of the blame goes to the customers, not all of it. Or were you just scanning through? Whatever, it's your money, do what you wish. Just so you know, if you sign up for a subscription to another company and get hacked, I will laugh since apparently you didn't learn your lesson. It all boils down to time.

Is this only Europe? One thing I know about Europe is to never give that country my CC info. My bank has a rule; to warn customers about banking with Europe because for some reason the info is accessibly stealable. @ Chrisopo I don't see what you're talking about. It says CC info INCLUDING expiration dates were stolen. Thats all the portable banking details I'm worried about.

Sony's incompetence could cost people their identities and money, and Sony offers 30 days of free game time??? Lol, my god Sony, WTH are you thinking? This is another prime example of why I do not play online games. And as far as Sony's idea for taking care of their loyal customers by only offering free game time in place of them possibly losing their entire savings and identities, you have just lost one future customer of any of your products or services right here.

@ Solatrus You're probably right. Who wants to give their credit card information to Sony now? Not me. This doesn't give off an impression of security. They should be like everyone else with peoples personal information......like the NSA. I don't see them getting hacked or the bank down my street. This hurts Sony in a big way. I say they'll lose about 30% of people who paid for things online.

Thanx Sony !!!! Give us free playstation plus so that we can download games for the first month then have to pay your subscription fee for the rest of my playstation life to keep the games. In order to keep track of your credit in the UK would involve you having to register with a few credit reference agency's then having to pay each agency a monthly subscription( usually £8 a month). I have three playstations so that's three people with they're details needing checked. Plus now my 14 year old daughters details are out there. Thanx Sony !!!!!!!

@parrot_of_adun Yes, but 26 million people had their personal information taken (Name, Address, Phone #, etc) and with that information you can simply walk into a bank, set up an account and get a credit card. You can ruin people's lives with just that simplest of information.
