SOE accounts, credit card info compromised

[UPDATE] Sony Online Entertainment confirms info on 10,700 European bank records may be stolen along with credit card details of nearly 13,000 and personal info for 24.6 million customers after games, websites taken down.

Trouble seemed to be afoot at Sony Online Entertainment this morning, when the publisher brought game servers and websites related to its portfolio of massively multiplayer online games offline. As suspected, SOE has now confirmed that it, too, has suffered a security breach similar to the one plaguing the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services.

24.6 million SOE accounts have been compromised.
24.6 million SOE accounts have been compromised.

In a statement issued to GameSpot, SOE has now confirmed that approximately 24.6 million accounts as well as 12,700 non-US credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates may have been stolen. The information may have been obtained by hackers between April 16 and 17, and SOE believes that it was part of the initial attack that compromised the PSN and Qriocity service.

"This information, which was discovered by engineers and security consultants reviewing SOE systems, showed that personal information from approximately 24.6 million SOE accounts may have been stolen, as well as certain information from an outdated database from 2007," the statement reads. "The information from the outdated database that may have been stolen includes approximately 12,700 non-US credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes), and about 10,700 direct debit records of certain customers in Austria, Germany, Netherlands, and Spain."

[UPDATE] As SOE had previously noted, the credit card information that may have been stolen as part of the attack was taken from an outdated database. Today, the online games publisher told GameSpot that of the 12,700 compromised numbers, only about 900 were still valid.

Of the 24.6 million compromised accounts, SOE said that hackers may have obtained names, addresses, e-mail addresses, birth dates, genders, phone numbers, login names, and passwords. SOE noted that the password data is stored in a hashed form and not plain text.

The foreign direct debit record information includes bank account numbers, customer names, account names, and customer addresses. The breach was discovered as Sony's engineers and outside consultants reviewed SOE's system in the wake of the attack on the PSN and Qriocity services.

According to SOE, the 24.6 million accounts were not game-specific. Games that fall under the publishing label include EverQuest, EverQuest 2, DC Universe Online, Free Realms, Star Wars Galaxies, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, and PlanetSide.

SOE said that it would add 30 days of free game time to current customers' subscriptions to make up for the service interruption. The publisher also promised that it would be offering a one-for-one match of free game time for each day that servers are offline.

Well you know the saying, "You get what you pay for." Last time I will ever trust Sony with my personal info again. From now on I'm buying pre-paid cards for PSN, that is if I use it at all. I read they were sending sensitive credit card info UNENCRYPTED over the net as a simple text file. Inexcusable. They rightly deserve their class action lawsuit that's in the works, and I hope they get slammed.

God help Sony. I don't see how the hackers see this as a 'fun way to waste time.' They're no better than terrorists.

wow. people get angry here. so...the esential part of life is based on a game console and its online options? i see xbox fanboys on here raving, thats depressing. opinions people, opinions. i see ps3 fanboys doing the same thing. leave your opinion an opinion. just because you can get on a computer does not give you ANY credentials to call others idiots or that you know everything. Sony got hacked, but that doesn't mean they have bad security. NOBODY here really knows anything other then what they read online which is horribly not reliable. Sony very well may have amazing security, but hackers sole purpose is to break through it. Given enough time and effort by enough people anything can be accomplished whether it be for good or bad intensions. Play games as you wish, have your opinions as you wish but keep a fair mindset. I'm hoping psn does come back online though and that its secure. I hope Sony doesn't give up, I doubt they would though. There are plenty of people who will still use their ps3, if nothing less then the ecconomy forcing them to for the sake they can't spend another $200 on a xbox. and eventually people will give up on xbox anyway i figure because times are tough, xboxlive is a expensive people can afford to cut. (sorry thats my bias there...but it makes sense to me the saying 'money talks' rules the world) post got outta hand in length, done now, most won't even read it. oh well. good luck Sony

Wow it just gets worse and worse for Sony. First they try and pawn off an overpriced internet ready game machine impersonating blu ray player to battle the mighty xbox, then they struggle to keep up in sales, then they release a shameless Wii copied controller that can't hold up against Kinect, then they get into a battle with a hacker that was rebelling against their arrogance, then Annonymous attacks, then PSN gets hacked with the data of 70+ million subscribers stolen, then SOE gets hacked with the data of 24+ million subscribers stolen........Now they think that a free month of this joke of a service and some free content will fix everything? ROFL ANYone that gets back on these services are morons!! I mean really? They say," Oh come back it's safe now. You can trust us." Heck with that. We trusted Sony the first time or we wouldn't have put that information on there in the first place!!! Trust? You've got to be kidding!!!!

There telling us about how the hackers have taken all are details but don't say what there going to do about it. Everyone already knows why the hackers hacked PSN, to get our money details and now Sony are saying oh this is what's happened yer so just letting you know. The 30 days subcription to Playstation plus does not make up for this mess.

Database systems when migrating to a new system is a very long process which calls for lots of downtime, even with todays technolgy. Lots of companies use two, three or more database systems in order to proceed with uninterupted service. As opposed to the service being down for a misunderstood amount of time. Anyone who has worked on a major network would understand this. Furthermore these actions could be a scare tactic, if there intent was honest in attempting to make sony look bad, being there intended target. If not, then they are simply information terrorists, and as previously stated could perform this act on any unsuspecting company. Sony has done a great job in providing no charge service for the most part, unlike the opposition, Microsoft. There is a reason you can earn free a DLC on the XBox, because you already paid for it. But that too can all change now depending on this case action lawsuit against Sony. Let's look at the bigger picture and not just focus on ourselves. And for an example of something being old but still effective, look at OS/2. An OS that has not been hacked without stealing the right credentials. It's still used in ATMs to this day for that very reason. So as far as Sony being neglectful on their own physical product, that can be debatable. But in their online service, par with any other company that probably retains even more crucial information for their customers.

I really cant stand the way Sony has been screwing up left and right, and how they continually fail to identify problems, hurt customers, and ignore our concerns. First they removed OS then the next big thing was an awful update with firmware 3.56. I'm sure a lot of you don't know, but if your harddrive got fried or failed and you tried to update, you were SOL with a bricked ps3. Sony made it worse by blaming it on the customer and clearly it was their fault. They even sneakily release 2 versions of the faulty firmware to help people with harmed systems but who hard their original harddrive, all other were forced to pay for a fix or a new system. Good job lying to your customers with your mistake, then deceiving them with updates and denying there were multiple versions. Now your getting breached twice in 1 month, but now that it's serious you're going to hide it from us for a week before you acknowledge it? Classy. As the days went on I knew I had to expect for the worst, they wouldn't wait if it was now big deal. But now they're "rewarding" us with a slap in the face? "Sorry we were breached, here is some free content, sort of, I mean it's free and cool for a month, then you gotta give it back or pay more." Sounds like a marketing ploy more than apology. I'm getting so fed up with Sony mishandling their problems, and mistreating their customers.

@aganinja yeh man and people say "Sony allowed it to happen" maybe thier security is out-dated but like I said, If I went through all the trouble to lock my doors and windows as well as put an alarm on and my house still gets robbed its mainly my fault? What about people who get robbed at gunpoint? Is it thier fault someone pulled a gun on them and got thier money? People seem to be dissmissing the hackers as if its something that just happens and you have to deal with it.

I agree that Sony should be held accountable to an extent, sure they are responsible for your info, and sure thier system may be outdated, but the hackers made all this trouble. Its seems like people are letting the hackers slide as if "well if Sony had better security they wouldnt get hacked " So sure Sony should be held accountable, but just as much or even more of the blame should go to the hackers, but not many people seem to acknowledge them. Hackers learn how to do these things and regardless of what security you have eventually it will get cracked.

@bleedgreen2-1-5 i can partially agree with you, but Sony is to blame for using outdated system for storing confidential data like user information and payment details. They hacked Sony because Sony made it easy for them to do it. There are known exploits for apache database and Sony did nothing to fix the wholes in their system - so much about care for the customers! That happened because of pure negligence of Sony, and lack of care for system security. They used outdated apache database system so they are (mostly) responsible for what happened.

@bleedgreen2-1-5 You're right in a way, it is the hackers fault this entire situation came about. But consumers give personal info to sony with the consolation that it is confidential and completely safe. It's sony's job to stop it from leaking, and if peoples info gets hacked away, sony is going to take most of the blame.

And why is everyone so hostile towards Sony, what about the Hackers? theyre the reason this all went down, anything can be hacked regardless of what security measures you take. If hackers didnt attack we wouldnt be in this situation, if you want to blame Sony since it is their responsibility fine, but the Hackers started all this trouble, but I hardly hear anyone hold the hackers themselves acountable.

Its funny that people blame Sony, If I left the house today, locked all my doors and windows and turned an alarm on but came home to find my door kicked in or my window broken and my stuff gone it would be MY fault and not the person who stole my stuff? Just know this, ANYTHING can be hacked, if hackers want it theyll get it, believe that

Sony's responsibility. In my business I keep lots of client data as well. It is MY business' responsibility to safeguard it. If it gets stolen, I'm going to be blamed. End of story and if any business think otherwise they don't deserve trusting clients.

@magnusm1 You can just say that because they've been compromised already. Try thinking, what if sony's security is good and those hackers are just that good. It is not sony's fault that your data have been stolen. It's not sony who stole your data. Just think positively. Like me. I would never ever give up my trust to sony. You are just an example of Human Misunderstanding. Think Positive. :)

The best thing sony can do now is alert the people whose bank card details have been tampered with so they can change them to prevent more problems for the company.
