SOE accounts, credit card info compromised

[UPDATE] Sony Online Entertainment confirms info on 10,700 European bank records may be stolen along with credit card details of nearly 13,000 and personal info for 24.6 million customers after games, websites taken down.

Trouble seemed to be afoot at Sony Online Entertainment this morning, when the publisher brought game servers and websites related to its portfolio of massively multiplayer online games offline. As suspected, SOE has now confirmed that it, too, has suffered a security breach similar to the one plaguing the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services.

24.6 million SOE accounts have been compromised.
24.6 million SOE accounts have been compromised.

In a statement issued to GameSpot, SOE has now confirmed that approximately 24.6 million accounts as well as 12,700 non-US credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates may have been stolen. The information may have been obtained by hackers between April 16 and 17, and SOE believes that it was part of the initial attack that compromised the PSN and Qriocity service.

"This information, which was discovered by engineers and security consultants reviewing SOE systems, showed that personal information from approximately 24.6 million SOE accounts may have been stolen, as well as certain information from an outdated database from 2007," the statement reads. "The information from the outdated database that may have been stolen includes approximately 12,700 non-US credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes), and about 10,700 direct debit records of certain customers in Austria, Germany, Netherlands, and Spain."

[UPDATE] As SOE had previously noted, the credit card information that may have been stolen as part of the attack was taken from an outdated database. Today, the online games publisher told GameSpot that of the 12,700 compromised numbers, only about 900 were still valid.

Of the 24.6 million compromised accounts, SOE said that hackers may have obtained names, addresses, e-mail addresses, birth dates, genders, phone numbers, login names, and passwords. SOE noted that the password data is stored in a hashed form and not plain text.

The foreign direct debit record information includes bank account numbers, customer names, account names, and customer addresses. The breach was discovered as Sony's engineers and outside consultants reviewed SOE's system in the wake of the attack on the PSN and Qriocity services.

According to SOE, the 24.6 million accounts were not game-specific. Games that fall under the publishing label include EverQuest, EverQuest 2, DC Universe Online, Free Realms, Star Wars Galaxies, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, and PlanetSide.

SOE said that it would add 30 days of free game time to current customers' subscriptions to make up for the service interruption. The publisher also promised that it would be offering a one-for-one match of free game time for each day that servers are offline.

@blue900 Tell me you are kidding. So it is me to blame if all my information got stolen and not sony's? That is like saying it is me to blame if a child molester kidnaps my kid from the day care center while they had supervision of him. Your argument is flawed in every way and you are defending a company who gives a --BLAM-- about you. Just stop posting before you make yourself look even more bad.

All I know is they better make good on the games that magically disappeared from my HDD. My wallet had better have the 50$ I just added to it, and some free time on DC Universe would be nice since I just purchased a month two days prior this incident. Two weeks I get between terms at school and no online blows. I want to smash a hackers face!

@EdenProxy first off America is not the only country that does globalization, and second how can globalization a process in which countries come together for trade and other economical things take away other people's freedom. Plus whats so bad about freedom your probally just jealous of us. Also, we have hardly any arrogance as we think highly of other people from different countries. For example when the Haiti earthquake happened the American Red Cross came over there and helped them through the disaster. In fact right now we are helping Japan through the recent tsunami and people including myself have benn donating money. Lastly I don't have anything wrong with people from different countries if anybody is thinking that, but because you insulted America I was really pissed off so just shut the hell up because you don't know what you're talking about! :(

Has anyone noticed that the "Related Games" section in the upper left corner of this article (randomly) features DC Universe Online? And despite having been released almost 4 months ago, is now the #1 game on GameSpot's homepage? I guess the Joker was behind the hack all along...

Not to make light of this situation, but some people are really taking this too hard. 900 encrypted CCnumbers (without their CVV2 codes) been taken, but there's no evidence it has... Hardly the end of the world.

Sony has a tough road ahead of them. They are going to be facing investigations and litigation in multiple countries for months, maybe years. Doesn't matter if Sony is at fault or not, its going to happen and its going to get ugly.

@chrisopo, Tor Thorson typed Homefront sh*ts 2.6 million instead of Homefront ships 2.6 million. He corrected his mistake, then deleted the comments that pointed to the mistake and blocked people that knew about it from his article. lol.

I feel no sympathy for a giant corporation that doesn't respect its customers, their rights, or their personal info. Hopefully we'll see some large lawsuits and fines against Sony. Nobody needs a PS4, not if all they're going to do is imitate.

uh oh, they have my email address, uh oh, they have my DOB, uh oh they have my phone number, uh oh they have my login info, uh oh they have my passwords and Credit card numbers....Seriously, this isn't a big issue...with common sense, making purchases online is up to the consumer to provide its paper work trail or like purchasing a home...you need insurance...a car...you need insurance. Know how you go about making purchases online..such as a pre paid card. Passwords/login can all be changed..credit checks every few months to keep track of your credit and making sure you see nothing strange on your report. its the consumers that need to create there own insurance, yes its Sony who is responsible for your information...but at the least, you should be prepared for when a cyber attack does happen.

hopefully the hackers do not use those credit cards or bank accounts, because that would make them giant hypocrites, doing it in the name of 'justice' and all.

Everyone hates hackers, until we want something for free, it's a double edge sword. But it truly sucks for those users, I mean, Microsoft and Sony and even Itunes sell these prepaid cards, there should not be any need for credit cards either on XBL or PSN. I hope Sony will make up to those users, Not me, cause I am a casual user of the PSN on my psp, but if it happened on XBL I'd be PO'ed

Just hope they fix that soon. I do have Live and PSN and I play in both depending on the game, just because of the friends that play that game in particular, and I think that is the case of many people that have both as well. So no more stupid comments about "Oh just change to Live fanboys" please.

Sony has been taking a cyber-beating haven't they? Now the world sees and anonymous is happy they notice. I hope Sony can pick itself up off the mat come back swinging, tho i think that this is only the beginning of what's to come. Did Sony deserve this for suing George Hotz? Legally, no. But in the eyes of Anonymous, who thinks that all information should be free, even games, Sony publicly punished a talented hacker who like them, allowed the freedom of information (gaming). i just don't think they understand that they are hurting more than just the company. And hurting the company make result a slower flow of games. Games cost money, without people to buy those games, they are no longer made to the quality that developers make them to.

@thesmiter Good points but there are some differences between industrialization before and now. During the first industrialization (the US and so on) the entire world relied on agriculture. This gave way to super powers. 2nd and 3rd world may industrialize but they will need to catch up to the 1st world's new stage. It will not balance out as the functionalism perspective believes global stratification is needed for the world to function. what EdenProxy talks about is true but he/she put it extremely. I do agree that while other countries are trying to industrialize, we Americans are consuming at the cost of equality for those other countries.

OK seriously people, I understand that getting your credit card information stolen is a pain, but it's only a small percent of the total people. Getting your name stolen is NOT that big of a deal. What do you think happens when you get spyware and malware from browsing sites? There are many programs and tracking cookies that could have already taken your personal information from somewhere. This whole issue is a big problem for Sony for sure, but a lot of you need to stop being so doom and gloom about your basic information. It doesn't really mean anything. No, it's not a good thing, but guess what... welcome to the information age.

@EdenProxy The entire industrialized world takes place in globalization. It started with colonialism in Africa and Asia back in the day. Now the ENTIRE Western world takes place in it. Companies from Western Europe, Japan, Canada, and the US all host multinational corporations. What's more, if you are typing on a computer right now, the pieces were likely manufactured in a 2nd or 3rd world country by a multinational corporation. Same with pretty much everything else you buy. And like it or not, putting global pressure on multinational corporations to pay living wages and take health and environmental precautions are the only things we can do. A few multinational corporations are giving way to pressure and actually doing some good for the places they exploit. For the most part, it's not happening. It will take time and effort, but just as the Industrial Revolution brought about unions and better standards of living, so, too, will globalization bring about global reform which will wind up being beneficial. But then how much will things cost...? Very complicated debate. Read the following article for an insight on how to get multinational corporations to cooperate instead of decimate: << LINK REMOVED >>

Alot of "professional' hackers are employed by cpu security firms and depts for those very reasons. Thats how they know the weaknesses in thier systems. Most dont want to spend the extra money to strengthen security out of arrogance.

I knew it I knew it wouldn't just be over like that if the hackers do have the credit card details they would be idiots to use it straight away they could use it in 10 or 15 years if they wanted to, or anytime between, just saying.
