Oblivion nabs Spike TV top honors

Cliffy B, Gears also snare awards, but crowd reacts in disbelief as run-and-gun title for the 360 misses top prize.

LOS ANGELES--Another Spike TV Video Game Awards show, another star-studded event that might not have appealed to hardcore fans of the subject it's supposed to celebrate. However, in its fourth try, the "First Network for Men" did pull off one of its best awards shows, in terms of both production and worthy nominees.

Fiddy, Tyrese, and Jackson hang before the event.

The fourth annual Spike TV Video Game Awards were held at the Galen Center in Los Angeles Friday night, with veteran actor Samuel L. Jackson returning for the second consecutive year as the show's host.

The broadcast of Friday's event will be aired on the self-proclaimed "First Network for Men" next Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT and will feature musical performances from Tenacious D and AFI. But GameSpot was in attendance this eve, with the results of the judges' voting below.

Team Gears of War, including Cliffy B (left), took home four awards.
Team Gears of War, including Cliffy B (left), took home four awards.

The big winner of the night was The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which scooped up five awards including the coveted Game of the Year prize. It wasn't a runaway victory for the Bethesda Softworks-developed game, though. Gears of War was neck-and-neck with Oblivion until the very last award--Game of the Year.

As the announcer listed off the nominees for Game of the Year, the greatest applause was aimed at Gears of War and Guitar Hero 2. But when Oblivion was announced as the winner, many in the crowd sounded stunned.

Oblivion also walked home with Most Addictive Game (voted on by the public), Best Performance by a Human (Male) for Patrick Stewart, Best Role-Playing Game, and Best Original Score. Gears of War took home four awards total, including Best Shooter, Best Graphics, Best Multiplayer Game, and Best Studio for its developers, Epic Games.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 won Best Individual Sports Game.
Tony Hawk's Project 8 won Best Individual Sports Game.

The Critics' Choice Award, the only category open for games released after November 7 (games scheduled for release before the end of the year were eligible for the Critics' Choice Award), went to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. By its requirements, the category was also the only chance for Wii or PlayStation 3 games to take home an award.

Tenacious D kicked off the ceremonies with the band's usual heavy-metal parody rock stylings, and Jackson continued the action with a few sketches before taking the stage in person. Helping Jackson out was Seth MacFarlane, bantering with the Snakes on a Plane star as the voice of Stewie Griffin from Family Guy. Presumably, Stewie will be animated in for the Wednesday broadcast.

There were some world-exclusive premieres, including footage of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, TNA Wrestling, and the opening cinematic from The Burning Crusade expansion of World of Warcraft. WOW got the deluxe treatment, with a congregation of robed, lip-synching figures taking the stage while the trailer showed above them, occasionally accompanied by some light pyrotechnics.

Heroes' Hayden Panettiere charmed the red carpet before presenting Most Addictive Game to Oblivion.
Heroes' Hayden Panettiere charmed the red carpet before presenting Most Addictive Game to Oblivion.

Beyond that, most of the presenters were in good spirits as they delivered their hit-and-miss lines before an oft-indifferent crowd. Former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin let go of a Wii Remote three times on the backswing of a Wii Sports golf game in a staged event, Masi Oka of Heroes dissed the WNBA when presenting the Best Team Sports Game Award, and Tyrese used the opportunity to promote his upcoming CD in the only ad-lib of the night.

The highlight of the evening came when comedienne Sarah Silverman brought her usual shtick of sarcastic humor to the stage, which was unfortunately lost on most of those in the crowd. She went on a tirade against gamers, saying they "should get an award for their work in AIDS prevention" because they simply stand no chance of getting laid.

Thankfully for those in attendance, Silverman's remarks apparently didn't apply to them. The MTV-generation audience continually filed out of the auditorium throughout the night muttering, "I don't even play video games."

I have Oblivion and GOW, both have thier good points, it just depends on your personal gaming mood. As for me, Im a huge Zelda Fan and have completed Twilight Zelda, \*~*/ I was slightly disapointed. LOZOOT is still my zelda favorite. Gears IS my favorite online game. (and Im a girl) lol, Opinions are like @zwholes, everyones got one.

Being a TRADITIONAL RPG fan, I take it as a sweet victory of such RPGs. It is pleasant to see that TRADITIONAL RPGs, which Oblivion belongs to, can still be quite popular, as Bethesda proved with their game. I'm not talking here about MMORPGs or those ACTION RPGs, which remind me more of a plain action game with a setting and a few features of a real Role-Playing Game, like Diablo... But, hey, to put it frankly, I don't take these award shows seriously, 'cause I think that every game is great at its own merits, whatever genre they belong to: Gears of War is grand as a shooter, and Oblivion is superb as a TRADITIONAL RPG. And it's funny to see when someone tries to compare games of different genres and tell which one is better, as if the games have something in common. How can you compare a sports game and a strategy, a shooter and an RPG, an adventure game and a simlulator?.. Perhaps, only by their popularity, but that would mean The Most Popular of the Year, not The Best of the Year. P.S. that's why Game of the Year, or Movie of the Year (it doesn't make any difference) award sounds to me rather ridiculous and subjective.

I don't see why people are upset because GoW didn't get GotY. When picking a GotY you have to take into account more than hype factor. is a HUGE game that nails just about every aspect of game save multiplayer. So while GoW is a tremendously great game, it doesn't automatically make it GotY.

Gears has the best co-op experience I've ever had since Double Dragon II and TMNT 3 back in the day. And it's done online. People only choose Oblivion because it's open ended. I prefer my RPGs linear. A story should have a direction.

just bc a game is long doesnt make it better. u can play gears multiplayer forever, eventually oblivion will end. I played oblivion, and i thought it was very, very boring. "hey guys, im gonna pick a lock in oblivion then mindlessly push the attack button and run in circles with an axe while a grandma throws blue magic at me cuz i took her nightgown."

I'd give the game of the year to the game that actually i had more fun playing and hence i guess to the game i spent more time with. Thus the choice is obviously between gears and oblivion. Considering that gears is multiplayer and considering how Oblivion even in his beauty disappointed me dumbing down the whole tes series, i'd say Gears deserved it but hey.. thats just my opinion.

While a couple of categories have some outstanding tragedies. that being Loco Roco not winning best song and Street Fighter not winning Best Fighting game. overall the awards went to the games that should have won. While gears of War is a great game Oblivion is the better game between them. Silverpimp: I hope that post was sarcasm because if it wasn't then wow.. just wow.

Funny to see all the little kids getting mad because GoW didn't get the game of the year award. Just get it through your heads kids... there is more to gaming than shooters alone. I own and play GoW, and while it is a great game, I wouldn't give it the game of the year award. Oblivion is the better choice. It is open ended, graphics are just as good (or better in the PC version :P ), lenght, etc.

When you're talking about a game that revolutionized role-playing, you're talking Oblivion. A 200 + hour game with infinite options in gameplaying........What beats that? I've played Gears of War. Good game....but come on......Elder Scrolls deserved it a lot more than any game.....Even though I haven't played Zelda, my opinion remains the same.....Oblivion deserves this year more than anyone!

I'm both happy and sad at this, I'm happy because Gears of War fanboys are pissed their lord and savior didn't win Game of the Year, but saddened by the fact Okami didn't win any awards... Yet Cliffy B. (That arrogant hack who couldn't come up with anything more original than "ME LIKEY GUNS!") manages to win an award over Clover Studios (Those eccentric psychopaths who made Viewtiful Joe, Killer7, God Hand and Okami)... People confound me with their idiocy

lmao! its pretty obvious this whole thread is made up of either zelda fan boys or gears of war fanboys. sad really, this award show is a farse of the highest degree but they did get one thing right and oblivion was it. GOW is excellent for a shooter that only lasted 7 hours and twilight princess is excellent for being another zelda game. face it folks, gears was to short and to much of a disney ride with no variation, and the new zelda is just a game to cater to the zelda fanboys. no, oblivion was far more versitile, far less linear and far more creative than either of the other two games. it doesnt matter if it came out earlier or not, if the gaming public that votes on this stuff was anything other than the stupid good consumers who believe anything they are told, then this fanboy war between gears and zelda wouldnt even be happening.

Jugulater 62, I posted because everyone was so worked up about the whole Oblivion/GoW thing... Just because I'm not interested in the 360 and have never played any of the games on it, doesn't mean I know SFA about games. I just don't like Microsoft and they're distinct lack of interest in the consumer eg the last update fiasco, and the fact that I've been hearing that games still crash on it every so often... that SHOULD NOT be happening on a modern gaming system. Sony also seem to be heading down that road of profit whoring too... but I'll be getting a PS3 after the price drops significantly and when they've sorted out all the problems with that too :s just wana play some more MGS man. Can't be getting enough of that right now :D

Oblivion should have won that award anyways. I spent like 8 hours beating the campaign, then beat it on insane because everyone said thats how your supposed to play it. Then when I was done I gave multiplayer a chance but is just wasn't as fun as I was expecting. So all I play multiplayer is Rainbow six. Game of the Year was Oblivion as it took away almost 90+ hours away from me. At least it was a long game. We don't need 8 hour shooters winning Game of the Year we need games that are still interesting after you have played through it 50 hours. Glad these judges saw that. Oh and to let you know these were all voted for on the their web site. I chose oblivion as game of the year myself anyways. I chose Gears for the awards it won, but I voted for oblivion on all the other ones. It was just that good.

Oblivion deserves the award. It has WAY more replay value, and it's an overall more rewarding experience. Don't get me wrong, I freaking LOVE Gears of War, but you just can't compete with Oblivion, I'm sorry. The game is amazing.

Oblivion is better than GoW. If GoW was longer for single player and they had a better learning curve ( i.e RAAM not being the easiest 'boss' character in the whole game) then maybe it could have been game of the year. DOA4 should have been best fighting game.

Having played Oblivion (to "completion") and GoW, I have no doubt that the winner desrved the accolade. I love GoW but for pure entertainment and replayability, it is left in the dust by Oblivion. Can't wait for the next instalment!

How come whenever I think "Ignant" I think "Fiddy Cent"? I think that fat bottom lip and gap in his teeth just make him look 75 IQ points dumber than he might actually be. I remember the ad when his game came out. "His moves, His Videos, His Music" Ha, you just talked yourself out of a sale.

("hector1313 I have a question. Considering that most of the audience at the event weren't into gaming, and most of the people actually presenting the event have absolutely nothing to do with the gaming, that rather suggests that the people who created and judged the awards have little, if any, knowledge of gaming. Bearing this in mind, why are people so worked up about Oblivion being named GOTY over GoW? Admittedly, I've not played either of them (and never will) but I don't see what the big deal is. I also don't particularly like shooters of any variety, as there is rarely any kind of difference between shooters these days..." ) I gotta ask, why the hell did you even post ? Sounds like you have less interest in games than the people in the audience.

Who's cares about GoW and Oblivion what happen to Okami from Clover / Capcom that had to be one of the most enjoyable and polished game I've played all yr. not to mention the stellar soundtrack, characters and art style. Show some respect for a company that brought innovation to gaming, u will be miss'd Clover...

Oblivion tops GOW Because it came out earlier this year. If The Twilight Princess came out early this year, it would definetly have a chance to be at the top. Never played GOW (And I know it seems hot), but I guess Oblivion gave a great impact this year. Oh and those people sayin Halo 3 will be game of the year next year, don't be too overconfident about that >=).

This was actually a pretty good awards show this year. Finally, games that deserve the recognition got recognized by Spike TV for once. Of all the catagories they had, I think that the RPG one was the toughest to decide. All of those games were excellent. It's too bad that they couldn't have given the award to all of them. Let's just hope that next year's awards will be just as good.
