Oblivion nabs Spike TV top honors

Cliffy B, Gears also snare awards, but crowd reacts in disbelief as run-and-gun title for the 360 misses top prize.

LOS ANGELES--Another Spike TV Video Game Awards show, another star-studded event that might not have appealed to hardcore fans of the subject it's supposed to celebrate. However, in its fourth try, the "First Network for Men" did pull off one of its best awards shows, in terms of both production and worthy nominees.

Fiddy, Tyrese, and Jackson hang before the event.
Fiddy, Tyrese, and Jackson hang before the event.

The fourth annual Spike TV Video Game Awards were held at the Galen Center in Los Angeles Friday night, with veteran actor Samuel L. Jackson returning for the second consecutive year as the show's host.

The broadcast of Friday's event will be aired on the self-proclaimed "First Network for Men" next Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT and will feature musical performances from Tenacious D and AFI. But GameSpot was in attendance this eve, with the results of the judges' voting below.

Team Gears of War, including Cliffy B (left), took home four awards.
Team Gears of War, including Cliffy B (left), took home four awards.

The big winner of the night was The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which scooped up five awards including the coveted Game of the Year prize. It wasn't a runaway victory for the Bethesda Softworks-developed game, though. Gears of War was neck-and-neck with Oblivion until the very last award--Game of the Year.

As the announcer listed off the nominees for Game of the Year, the greatest applause was aimed at Gears of War and Guitar Hero 2. But when Oblivion was announced as the winner, many in the crowd sounded stunned.

Oblivion also walked home with Most Addictive Game (voted on by the public), Best Performance by a Human (Male) for Patrick Stewart, Best Role-Playing Game, and Best Original Score. Gears of War took home four awards total, including Best Shooter, Best Graphics, Best Multiplayer Game, and Best Studio for its developers, Epic Games.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 won Best Individual Sports Game.
Tony Hawk's Project 8 won Best Individual Sports Game.

The Critics' Choice Award, the only category open for games released after November 7 (games scheduled for release before the end of the year were eligible for the Critics' Choice Award), went to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. By its requirements, the category was also the only chance for Wii or PlayStation 3 games to take home an award.

Tenacious D kicked off the ceremonies with the band's usual heavy-metal parody rock stylings, and Jackson continued the action with a few sketches before taking the stage in person. Helping Jackson out was Seth MacFarlane, bantering with the Snakes on a Plane star as the voice of Stewie Griffin from Family Guy. Presumably, Stewie will be animated in for the Wednesday broadcast.

There were some world-exclusive premieres, including footage of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, TNA Wrestling, and the opening cinematic from The Burning Crusade expansion of World of Warcraft. WOW got the deluxe treatment, with a congregation of robed, lip-synching figures taking the stage while the trailer showed above them, occasionally accompanied by some light pyrotechnics.

Heroes' Hayden Panettiere charmed the red carpet before presenting Most Addictive Game to Oblivion.
Heroes' Hayden Panettiere charmed the red carpet before presenting Most Addictive Game to Oblivion.

Beyond that, most of the presenters were in good spirits as they delivered their hit-and-miss lines before an oft-indifferent crowd. Former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin let go of a Wii Remote three times on the backswing of a Wii Sports golf game in a staged event, Masi Oka of Heroes dissed the WNBA when presenting the Best Team Sports Game Award, and Tyrese used the opportunity to promote his upcoming CD in the only ad-lib of the night.

The highlight of the evening came when comedienne Sarah Silverman brought her usual shtick of sarcastic humor to the stage, which was unfortunately lost on most of those in the crowd. She went on a tirade against gamers, saying they "should get an award for their work in AIDS prevention" because they simply stand no chance of getting laid.

Thankfully for those in attendance, Silverman's remarks apparently didn't apply to them. The MTV-generation audience continually filed out of the auditorium throughout the night muttering, "I don't even play video games."

For me Oblivion on the 360 performed terribly to ever be considered getting a game of the year award. Between the 2, Gears definately takes it for me purely because it feels as though it works properly and isn't inherently broken.

I'm surprised that people are even having this debate. Gears has gotten consistently fantastic accolades from critic and gamer alike. Oblivion has as well. They're both FANTASTIC pieces of software (and I'd debate are testaments to video games as "art"). As much as I adore Gears, I personally spent over 190 hours with Oblivion, and many of you did the same. The content it offers is absolutely untouchable, and the work that Bethesda put into the project was admirable, not to mention the amount of extra content and continued support. As BADLY as I wanted to vote for GoW, Oblivion simply stole the title for 2006 in my book, but not by much. Instead of arguing the merits of an award show, we should be reflecting on just how kick ass 2006 was for 360 owners.. and gamers as a whole. Put it in perspective, people.

Christ, what does it matter? If some of you guys prefer GoW to Oblivion and Spike TV disagrees, so what? It's just their opinion, and it doesn't change anything about GoW or Oblivion for fans of either game. All this whining is absolutely remarkable.

Completely agree with you Bathyj. Ever since GS has gotten a hold of GoW, it is just only 360 and Gears that they`re thinking (it started even before this, but it wasn`t so serious). Totally biased, but this certainly culminates it all. I mean, don`t you have something better to post in that frame than a user comment? This just in: a user was unhappy that Oblivion stole GoW`s trophy. So lame. You would have better posted a quote from the Take-two scandal, heck, anything would have been better. But GS just wants to keep sinking slowly.

Well if Oblivion is game of the year, it should have been best pc game of the year.... This show lost a bit of its credibility, if it ever had one....lol. Anyway Wii won on the new technologie, thats pretty funny comming from them : these people are the kind to love beautiful graphic instead of originality.

i think Oblivion is 10 Times Better than GOW. And i also believe Okami should've won a "most original game award" if they had one. and it was stupid for okami to be cateagoried with GOW and Oblivion and all those excellent 360 games. its not as if Super Mario Bros was gonna win Super Mario World. an excellent game on the nes can't beat an excellent game on the snes. why put a ps2 game in that cateagory when next gen is here? its good, but unless it was a perfect 10.0, it wouldn't stand a chance.

Actually Okami has something alot of these games doesn't haven't and deserves it. It's called ingenuity and originality...and all because they were brave enough to try something new and it damn well paid off ^_^ GOW is just dumb gun fun with hardly anything that hasn't been seen before

'Era of literature'? You're a moron, but you do have a point. Video games are advancing rapidly as a medium, and proving beyond a shadow of a doubt to be contenders against even the most epic of movies, albums, and books alike. Oh, to combine all of our favorite forms of entertainment and mash them into an interactive plethora of virtual experience. I love the modern age.

Absolutely stupid to compair next gen games to last gen games. Thats why these dudes are idiots, they just don't get it, comparing ps2 to 360 games in graphics? A game solo purpose involving legendary rock hits, wins best soundtrack? REALLY? ugh. lol.

The crowd was stunned? Why? Oblivion has had the GOTY award on lockdown for a long time. 142 hrs, and counting, still on my first game. EDIT: There's no bias on this site. Gamespot reports on Microsoft's stuffup's as well, it's just that Sony has been particularly bad over the past year.

The thing I hate right now is that they took the away the surprise on the awards, now I don't have to bother in staying late to watch the awards on spike. They really should show this kind of stuff Live. It will be a lot better for viewers.

How does a game (In this case "Oblivion") win game of the year yet isn't the best PC game. Surely if "Company of Heroes" is better (Which for the love of god isn't) how is it not game of the year or is logic thrown out of the window when it comes to these things.

Ever get the feeling Gamespot would just bend over and receive Microsoft if they wanted it? The section called "This just in" always has a negative story about Sony but since Sony isn't in the news much at the moment someone says in this very thread, "Whoa Whoa Whoa .... Oblivion IS a great game but better than GOW....hmmm I don't think so." and thats their headline. Pull your head out of your a** Gamespot. Your supposed to be unbiased. You're such a haven for fanboys you've become one yourself. No one argues GoW is a AAA game but Oblivion is clearly a deeper more rewarding and engaging experience on so many levels. Lets face it, without the awesome graphics (which people keep telling me dont matter, its gameplay thats important) GoW would be run of the mill. While the gameplay is fun, and I love a 3rd person shooter done right, its pretty standard fair with not a lot we haven't seen before. Personally I think Rainbow 6 is a lot better even though I love them both. You're all just blowing Gears way out of proportion. Quoted for truth my brother. This is what I've been saying for the longest time. Gamespot is THE prime source for biased articles and unnecasary additions to otherwise good editorials. They have been disappointing me and lots of other people I know alot recently.

They should have an award show for best gamers in different genres. That would be cool.

It's not a flawless award but it is improving. Maybe in 5 years we'll have one worth watching.

Oblivion was easily the best game. Unlike pretty gears you could do whatever you wanted and it was not finished after playing for a day.
