Oblivion nabs Spike TV top honors

Cliffy B, Gears also snare awards, but crowd reacts in disbelief as run-and-gun title for the 360 misses top prize.

LOS ANGELES--Another Spike TV Video Game Awards show, another star-studded event that might not have appealed to hardcore fans of the subject it's supposed to celebrate. However, in its fourth try, the "First Network for Men" did pull off one of its best awards shows, in terms of both production and worthy nominees.

Fiddy, Tyrese, and Jackson hang before the event.

The fourth annual Spike TV Video Game Awards were held at the Galen Center in Los Angeles Friday night, with veteran actor Samuel L. Jackson returning for the second consecutive year as the show's host.

The broadcast of Friday's event will be aired on the self-proclaimed "First Network for Men" next Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT and will feature musical performances from Tenacious D and AFI. But GameSpot was in attendance this eve, with the results of the judges' voting below.

Team Gears of War, including Cliffy B (left), took home four awards.
Team Gears of War, including Cliffy B (left), took home four awards.

The big winner of the night was The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which scooped up five awards including the coveted Game of the Year prize. It wasn't a runaway victory for the Bethesda Softworks-developed game, though. Gears of War was neck-and-neck with Oblivion until the very last award--Game of the Year.

As the announcer listed off the nominees for Game of the Year, the greatest applause was aimed at Gears of War and Guitar Hero 2. But when Oblivion was announced as the winner, many in the crowd sounded stunned.

Oblivion also walked home with Most Addictive Game (voted on by the public), Best Performance by a Human (Male) for Patrick Stewart, Best Role-Playing Game, and Best Original Score. Gears of War took home four awards total, including Best Shooter, Best Graphics, Best Multiplayer Game, and Best Studio for its developers, Epic Games.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 won Best Individual Sports Game.
Tony Hawk's Project 8 won Best Individual Sports Game.

The Critics' Choice Award, the only category open for games released after November 7 (games scheduled for release before the end of the year were eligible for the Critics' Choice Award), went to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. By its requirements, the category was also the only chance for Wii or PlayStation 3 games to take home an award.

Tenacious D kicked off the ceremonies with the band's usual heavy-metal parody rock stylings, and Jackson continued the action with a few sketches before taking the stage in person. Helping Jackson out was Seth MacFarlane, bantering with the Snakes on a Plane star as the voice of Stewie Griffin from Family Guy. Presumably, Stewie will be animated in for the Wednesday broadcast.

There were some world-exclusive premieres, including footage of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, TNA Wrestling, and the opening cinematic from The Burning Crusade expansion of World of Warcraft. WOW got the deluxe treatment, with a congregation of robed, lip-synching figures taking the stage while the trailer showed above them, occasionally accompanied by some light pyrotechnics.

Heroes' Hayden Panettiere charmed the red carpet before presenting Most Addictive Game to Oblivion.
Heroes' Hayden Panettiere charmed the red carpet before presenting Most Addictive Game to Oblivion.

Beyond that, most of the presenters were in good spirits as they delivered their hit-and-miss lines before an oft-indifferent crowd. Former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin let go of a Wii Remote three times on the backswing of a Wii Sports golf game in a staged event, Masi Oka of Heroes dissed the WNBA when presenting the Best Team Sports Game Award, and Tyrese used the opportunity to promote his upcoming CD in the only ad-lib of the night.

The highlight of the evening came when comedienne Sarah Silverman brought her usual shtick of sarcastic humor to the stage, which was unfortunately lost on most of those in the crowd. She went on a tirade against gamers, saying they "should get an award for their work in AIDS prevention" because they simply stand no chance of getting laid.

Thankfully for those in attendance, Silverman's remarks apparently didn't apply to them. The MTV-generation audience continually filed out of the auditorium throughout the night muttering, "I don't even play video games."

It should have been a run-off between Zelda TP and GoW. Since they screwed Zelda out of the eligibility (along with Resistance Fall of Man) it should have been GoW. Oblivion is okay, but it shouldn't have won. Also, did Okami get any mention anywhere? Guess there's no place for innovation or art direction... sorry Okami.

Spike TV's video game "awards" are the epitome of casual. They're just appealing to casual gamers who don't know what games are good and what aren't. Oblivion as GOTY? LOL.

The Spike VGAs are a farce and will ALWAYS be a farce. Do not take anything even remotely connected to it seriously. I don't need B-list celebrities to tell me what games deserve accolades. The gaming press and its readers/users do a fine job, so no thanks Spike.

Well there's just one thing I have to ask: They gave the best fighting game award to Mortal Kombat Armageddon, a game that scored a 7.0 here, instead of Tekken DR, a game that got a 9.2. After seeing that I have no faith in their rankings. I think this was some kind of PR gig for the network to get stars to come out. Spike and Maxim apparently do review games, but their not game reviewers. I'm sure you could make a game called 'B00BS' and they'd give it a top score.

I must say, I agree with Oblivion receiving the nod for GotY. Not to say I don't like Gears, I own it and love it (almost done w/ Insane difficulty! Stuck on the middle part of the train :( ) But Oblivion gives you so much more, so much more value. 100+ hours for me, and I still haven't done everything, just beat the story and all the guilds. Still have loads of dungeons to explore and plunder. I'm lvl 28. Anyway, Oblivion is a great game, so don't knock on it. If you frequent this site at all, you'll know it received the same rating as Gears, 9.6, and managed to maintain that level of quality the entire 100+ hours.

I agree that Elder Scrolls deserved game of the year. Company of Heroes did not deserve to be nominated, much less win an award. Ghost Recon got shafted. Best fighting game was also rediculous. Mortal Kombat won because its the most well-know franchise. Tekken or DOA 4 (both superior games) should have won. I guess we can't be too harsh though. After all, the Oscar's are just as trashy. For a quality award show, I'll stick with Gamespot.

I agree, Oblivion has to be one of the best games of "06 and in my opinion a "true" roleplaying game. Unlike some other games, this one actually lets u roleplay as a bad, good or shady-inbetween guy. I can't wait ti'll they announce Elder Scrolls 5!

This is just another one of those glamourized pop culture offerings which do nothing to give justice to the incredible accomplishments of any of the game developers.

All of these awards look pretty accurate. Unfortunately, I don't feel like the "Best Performance to Male Actor" should go to Patrick Stewart in Oblivion. Although I own the game, and loved every minute of playing it, Steward only too part in a minimal part before his character died. What gives? He barely had a script to work with! Anyway, it looks like the 360 fared pretty well in this award ceremony. Maybe next year the game industry will see some diversity since the new systems will have been on the market for a little bit.

Well, if one game was going to beat out Gears for GOTY, I'm glad it was Oblivion. And keep in mind, PS fanboys, that there are other games out there besides Okami and FFXII, and in the opinions of many, some of these other games are better. Oblivion was FANTASTIC, and deserved the award, over a FF game that gets boring over time and a pseudo-Zelda clone. (And i'm not just talking about the cel-shaded graphics, there.) But MK beating out those other fighting games? Very odd.

Not saying Oblivion didn't deserve the award--hard to compare GoW to it since it's an apples and oranges issues--however, I have to wonder if oblivion won more as a vote against GoW... Some people, for whatever reason, have an almost violent hatred for the game... A need to be different? Who knows.

"Cliffy B, Gears also snare awards, but crowd reacts in disbelief as run-and-gun title for the 360 misses top prize" GOW is not a 'run and gun' game, gamespot. It's a strategic shooter. If you try to run and gun in GOW, you're an idiot. Get your facts straight! Oh, and Oblivion deserves the game of the year award.

lol.. Oblivion game of the year? Um....hardly....maybe its just me, but I got tired of Oblivion fairly quickly... That being said, Oblivion is a beautiful, nicely created game, I jsut never really got into it.. Gears of War though...........holy....crap. Yea....Gears should have won GoTY. But, eh, I'll live. its Spike TV anyway, their credibility is only half a point above G4's credibility. While I dont think MK deserved best fighting, neither does DoA4. Ever sincne DoA2, Dead or Alive is just an excuse for large, polygonal boobies. When DoAX Came out, I lost all respect for Tecmo developed fighters, and all respect for DoA. any game that capitalizes on Sex and Boobs over a fighting system shouldn't even be nominated imo.... And Best RPG should go to Oblivion, FFXII is only a tad worse (Oblivion has better music imo, I'm not that big of a fan of FF12's soundtrack)

i think that oblivion deserved it because that game is huge, alot of work went into it, DOA4 definitely should have won fighting, and in my opinion okami is overrated by alot of people just being based on its art style alone, gameplay for me got quite boring. but overall... its spike tv they dont have credibility haha, MXC!

While I agree with most of Obilivions awards I think it would be hard to pick a best RPG between that and FF 12 becuase I found both to be very addicting and very fun to play through. That was a tough call for that category. I am also surprised that Okami didnt win many awards at all. That was a very fun interesting game in itself. No surprise that Gears got best shooter and Multi-Player. Overall its actaually not that bad of a list. Patrick Stewart is on it.

Oh come on. Oblivion was spectacular, there's no arguing that. I've played both titles extensively, and Oblivion can't compete with the visceral thrill of Gears of War. I think this was just Spike trying to boost its credibility with hardcore gamers.

Don't have a problem with it except with the fighting games (should've been Tekken DR even though its more or less a port but still...). And I'm extremely pleased that Oblivion won game of the year, as I happened to be one of the voters for that phenomenally crafted game.

lwts hear it for Lights and Sounds! Johnny Depp should have gotten best Voice over, but o well, and Gears of War, or Guitar Hero 2 should have easily gotten Game of the Year over Oblivion, but who really cares

I think the awards are both a blessing and a curse, on one hand they're great to establish publicity for gaming but on the other hand all they seem to end up doing is damaging the audience they're supposedly aimed at. I, like most of us, am a normal person living a normal life. Gaming has a stigma attached to it that is hard to escape, my girfriend hated the 360 until she playd Viva Pinata... now I can't get the controller out of her hands. I think there's clearly an issue with how games are perceived, while I congratulate these awards for gathering attention all they seem to do is attract the wrong attention... Thoughts?
