Keiji Inafune resigns from Capcom

Capcom's head of research and development leaves post after 23-year run; will be replaced by Katsuhiko Ichii.

Keiji Inafune may have had a long stint at Japanese developer Capcom, but today the producer of Onimusha and Dead Rising decided to finally call it quits. The 23-year veteran, who rose through the ranks from graphic designer to become the publisher-developer's head of research and development, announced his departure on his blog, saying he will "resign later this month."

Inafune's career at Capcom is dead, not rising.
Inafune's career at Capcom is dead, not rising.

Inafune originally joined Capcom as a graphic designer, working on the first Street Fighter. He went on to create the character design for Mega Man and then worked on the game's many sequels before graduating to the role of producer. More recently, Inafune produced the Onimusha, Lost Planet, and Dead Rising franchises.

Inafune has been outspoken about his games, Capcom, and development in general. Earlier this year, he told the New York Times, "I look around the Tokyo Game Show, and everyone's making awful games; Japan is at least five years behind." He also stated, "I want to make games that travel overseas, but Capcom hasn't taken globalization seriously."

Inafune oversaw Capcom's move to outsourcing its franchises to Western developers, including Swedish studio GRIN for Bionic Commando and Canada-based Blue Castle, (now Capcom Game Studio Vancouver), for Dead Rising 2.

Inafune's resignation comes the day after Capcom released its latest financial report, which contained a mix of good and bad news for the company. While Dead Rising 2 has sold 1.8 million copies, Lost Planet 2's weak performance helped cause a net profit slide of ¥1.78 billion ($22 million), down 39.9 percent over April-September the previous year.

Speaking with GameSpot, Capcom said it will restructure its development organization following Inafune's departure. Katsuhiko Ichii will be appointed head of the development organization and will be supported by a new development management team consisting of Nobuyuki Matsushima, Jun Takeuchi, Taichiro Genbun, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, and Shutaro Kobayashi. The new unit will also integrate marketing and development functions from within the company to offer a "broader stroke approach to the development process," according to Capcom.

good riddance hopefully capcom can restructure itself and go back to making good games instead of awful decisions like the new dmc which is ugly as crap. getting rid of people stuck in their ways can be good for a company to grow. the guy should keep his opinions to himself since their obviously wrong. if games like tales of , xenoblade, persona, phoenix wright, kingdom hearts, pokemon ect are awful then good i'll continue buying these "awful" games along with millions of other people. i'd much rather play them than what he considers a "good" game like lost planet which is the worst series i've ever seen

Make a epic Breath of Fire 6 like 1-4 not dragon quarters which had a kiddie cellshading look, also make a SCARY resident evil 6 and a awesome Devil May Cry 5 NOT a reboot of the series !!! And Capcom will be back on sales ;)

We have enough generic western style games...Japan should stick to making Jgames which we all know and love...look at what "westernizing" DMC gave us...I want the old Dante back!!!!

Reason why Capcom isn't doing so good is because its "westernization" of its IP's IMO.. I used to buy Capcom games, back when they were JRPG's on the PS2.

"I look around Tokyo Games Show, and everyone's making awful games; Japan is at least five years behind." He also claimed, "I want to make games that travel overseas, but Capcom hasn't taken globalisation seriously." This man speaks the truth! I'm proud Keiji left Capcom. Maybe someday he will open his own gaming studio and develop games which doesn't consist of appealing western audiences, but rather develop quality games for everyone.

Hopefully they're not planning on letting marketing interfere with development more. That always ends bad with everything.

@nocoolnamejim agree but don't you think Capcom did try and failed with Bionic Commando and Dark Void. Also now DMC (Devil May Cry reboot) is at risk.

No doubt Capcom has been in a lot of win/fail situations this gen, some of their games have been as good as always, some of them not much, i hope this shake Capcom and finally wake up making a new RE survival horror and a new DMC ( that crap Ninja Dog is doing doesn't count)

@Elozl No he means that they are just making the same games over and over and over instead of branching out to appeal to a wider audience, not just plain westernizing them that would be dumb

"When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in a confederation against him." -Jonathan Swift I hope someone else is smart enough to hire Inafune. He was right in that interview with NY Times, and he realizes what needs to be done.

Inafune is a "big mouth" IMO. He only speaks and does nothing. He says Japan is five years behind and goes on to make games that lamely imitate Western aesthetics in every sense. Why not try to stick to your OWN Japanese style and try to make your games work? You say Japanese games are five years behind? What about Platinum? They've made Bayonetta and Vanquish, two games which are take elements from the top franchises in their respective genre, give it an original twist and stand as some of the most entertaining games of the year. They're Japanese for FYI,Mr.Inafune.

That's a bold statement, but likely true. I applaud Inafune-san for making what I'm sure was a tough decision and I wish him well in the future. The original Mega Man series was a major influence on my childhood. Best of luck Inafune-san.

Keiji Inafune has always been a role model for me, so this is sad. I've had dreams about teaming up with him and making Mega Man X9. (16bit style!). Guess that won't happen. :(

Saw this coming really. Inafune is fed up with the Japanese game development philosophy and has been for quite some time. Definitely Capcom's loss.

WTH? I seriously did not see that coming! I knew Inafune was already disappointed at the TGS, and how Japan is behind on some stuff, but dang, that was so blunt.

@Zanoh, It's no need to feel sorry for him. Not saying it to come off like that, but it's not like he got fired or anything he choose (well we can assume it was largely a choice of his) to resign--for whatever reason. I'm sure he has something planned for his life after Capcom.

@magusat999 (and n64nut as well), Spot on. I couldn't agree w/ you more. That pretty much has been Capcom's approach in recent years. And it seems almost ironic they seem more interested in pushing the bad decisions they make and giving them more spotlight (i.e. Lost Planet 2), then the good things that have given them success in the past. Go figure... I truly hope they can really do it up big and turn it around w/ all this restructuring--hopefully it'll get them back on track to the company they once were.

The good about Capcom is that they have been creating new IPs - probably more than all of the developers in Japan combined - during the past 3 years or so. They have been very good about striking while the iron is hot, and releasing the sequels and titles people desire (except for Breath of Fire, which I still can't figure why they just let that series die - like throwing money out of the window). The bad thing is they have sometimes show some bad decisions - like putting way too much money on a title that is based on "iffy" concepts. Lost planet 1 wasn't all that, so what made them think Lost Planet 2 was going to be some blockbuster? They have completely ignored the Onimusha series, and they could have pimped out Resident Evil 5 a little more than they did. They have sometimes shown that they must be spread too thin, because a game will hit with the force of an asteroid - and then suddenly... nothing. No updates, no DLC, no support - game just dies. They also do not keep the games they make in the media very long, they sort of just fall away after release date (for example - Street Fighter 4, great game - but when's the last time any fresh news came out about it?). So they tend to lean towards the "churn 'em out and move on" philosophy rather than looking to get a stable gamer audience.

Personally, Doolum, I hope he doesn't take Onimusha w/ him b/c apparently looking at his 'westward' thinking approach to gaming as of late--it seems Onimusha wasn't 'westernized' enough for him to care about it anymore. He's probably one of the reasons the series died, anyway. Considering the clout he had at Capcom I'm sure there were plenty of times he could have pushed for something new w/ Onimusha; he simply just didn't care to. Hopefully he leaves it, and someone else will breathe some life back into (among other forgotten fan favorites). I'll wish him the best, but honestly I can't say I'm not slightly happy to know he's gone. I didn't like how he was so hard-up on pushing the westernizing of Capcom crap. Maybe it seems like Capcom is beginning to realize now that straying too far from a uniqueness that worked for you (namely that Japanese flavor mixed w/ some western influences) doesn't net you the success you always expect.

Capcom's games already cater wholeheartedly to Western gamers; that's why they haven't made anything good since RE remake/Viewtiful Joe. All their games are action games now, and you can tell its not because they believe in action games; its because the bulk of games Westerners play are action games and they just want to fit in. So sad, Capcom used to be my favorite developer.

Inafune has said in past interviews that the industry is going to collapse and that it already has in Japan however too many devs don't see the potential in the expanded market so it's easier to just give up and move on to something else.
