Keiji Inafune resigns from Capcom

Capcom's head of research and development leaves post after 23-year run; will be replaced by Katsuhiko Ichii.

Keiji Inafune may have had a long stint at Japanese developer Capcom, but today the producer of Onimusha and Dead Rising decided to finally call it quits. The 23-year veteran, who rose through the ranks from graphic designer to become the publisher-developer's head of research and development, announced his departure on his blog, saying he will "resign later this month."

Inafune's career at Capcom is dead, not rising.
Inafune's career at Capcom is dead, not rising.

Inafune originally joined Capcom as a graphic designer, working on the first Street Fighter. He went on to create the character design for Mega Man and then worked on the game's many sequels before graduating to the role of producer. More recently, Inafune produced the Onimusha, Lost Planet, and Dead Rising franchises.

Inafune has been outspoken about his games, Capcom, and development in general. Earlier this year, he told the New York Times, "I look around the Tokyo Game Show, and everyone's making awful games; Japan is at least five years behind." He also stated, "I want to make games that travel overseas, but Capcom hasn't taken globalization seriously."

Inafune oversaw Capcom's move to outsourcing its franchises to Western developers, including Swedish studio GRIN for Bionic Commando and Canada-based Blue Castle, (now Capcom Game Studio Vancouver), for Dead Rising 2.

Inafune's resignation comes the day after Capcom released its latest financial report, which contained a mix of good and bad news for the company. While Dead Rising 2 has sold 1.8 million copies, Lost Planet 2's weak performance helped cause a net profit slide of ¥1.78 billion ($22 million), down 39.9 percent over April-September the previous year.

Speaking with GameSpot, Capcom said it will restructure its development organization following Inafune's departure. Katsuhiko Ichii will be appointed head of the development organization and will be supported by a new development management team consisting of Nobuyuki Matsushima, Jun Takeuchi, Taichiro Genbun, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, and Shutaro Kobayashi. The new unit will also integrate marketing and development functions from within the company to offer a "broader stroke approach to the development process," according to Capcom.

@-TheWormsMan- Why on Earth would he go to Platinum? Capcom shut Clover down and now those members are made up of PlatinumGames. They're a response to Capcom, they're the exact OPPOSITE of Capcom. They're creative, they're Japanese and make their games with a distinctive Japanese style while Inafune was constantly murmuring about how behind Japanese games are and the industry needs to catch up and doing so by ruining their own game releases. PlatinumGames, and especially Hideki Kamiya are definitely not going to want a guy like Inafune in that company when he's one of the people responsible for pulling the plug on Clover (Viewtiful Joe, God Hand, Okami).

He is correct. Japanese games are so dated. They still publish dull 2D RPG games. Western countries has moved to a new level of RPG gaming such as Fallout 3 and Mass Effect 2. Too bad that Japan still cannot recognize what 'we' want from them.

Resident Evil 2, Dead Rising, Onimusha Series... yep obviously no-one here's slating this guy has ever played any of those games and appreciated their worth in gaming history.... Its true he should have questioned publicly slating his employer - but be honest here - who doesn't occasionally think that their employer sucks :D

You bunch of idiots are gonna miss him, he's been making bad business decisions like letting Ninja Theory develop DMC among other things as for me I'm not gonna miss him, good riddance and I hope Platinum Games doesn't hire him they don't need him.

Good riddance to the anti-weeaboo poster boy I say. He hasn't made a good game in years and both of his big games this year were flops at retail and had huge budgets, so why wasn't he fired is the only question? If I were to criticise my employer and then turn in substandard work, I know I sure wouldn't last long in my job.

So where's he going? Based on his comments, I assume he's not retiring. Wonder if he left due to management direction, salary or what.

The problem is the outsourcing, they no longer do in house things. It has lost its soul.

Just as Inafune is to leave Capcom, his entry in the Megaman Legends 3 (3DS) heroine contest received the least number of votes.

What Inafune is leaving? DOES THIS MEAN CAPCOM CAN START MAKING GOOD GAMES AGAIN!? I swear, if I had to hear this guy mention one more time how Capcom had to appeal to the West by butchering their own franchises (Lost Planet, DMC) to make money my head was going to split. This can only be seen as a positive at this point in time for long-time Capcom fans, because these guys haven't been making good games for like two years now. Let's some fun stuff come out of Japan's former top dog already, this is embarrassing.

I'd like to see this man given control of a game at a western developer, like Bioware or someone big enough to give him at least 2 years to make something awesome.

And Capcom loses the biggest forward-thinking senior member of it's staff. Too bad, since he was right about games from Japan being that far behind. Some new company will snap him up and reap gold from the acquisition.

lol at the comments about him joining platinum... the reason those guys left is mostly because of Inafune. Lets face it, he was great at one point but now he is just holding the company back.

Meh, he'll be back. He'll try to join another studio that sees game design the same way he does. Hopefully he has realized Lost Planet 2's failure was his mistake and not the result of NA audience's inability to realize the so-called greatness of his game.

it's for the best. capcom is a japanese developer. maybe Inafune can find employment with a western developer and take his ideas to the limit, without restraining or talking down on a whole industry (i LOVE japanese games and i hope they never westernize. imagine a westernized MGS? or FF? lol...) i mean, he took the whole Westernize deal a bit too far. making a north american protagonist called CHUCK and making the bad guy a huge slang spitting black dude? lol... you are japanese dude, don't try to be american. Anyway, i loved Onimusha, AND Dead Rising 2, and while it's sad that we won't see a new game soon, no one will pass the chance to recruit this guy.

Why does everyone keep saying "look what 'westernizing' DMC did", the game hasn't even come out yet and you have not played it so how do you know how good it is. The game looks pretty good, and Dante is supposed to be younger. How do you know what he was supposed to look like at this age? The last DMC was horrible and so are half of the other games that Capcom puts out. The best games they have made recently have been MM9 & 10.

I do agree with him. Twenty years ago, all the best games came out of Japan, and for the most part games not made in Japan were not worth buying. Since the XBox came out and the elite PC developers saw how profitable consoles were, there is really a complete reversal of this.

If it weren't for the fact that he made Mega Man, I'd say good riddance. "Japan is at least five years behind" my butt. The best games aren't necessarily the ones that push boundaries, they're the ones that are fun out of the box, and aren't boggled down with glitches, DLC, achievements, and one-dimensional M-rated content that has been inserted purely for shock value and/or to drive sales.

@Shadowysea07: Kingdom Hearts is awful. I think he's referring to the fact that when you look at game design, they are behind. Final Fantasy XIII was a chief example of this, they said they bank on story and whatnot to drive their games. But that's assuming that the plot of FF13 eclipses that which is released over here in America. Also? Onimusha bad? Mega Man bad? Riiiiight.
