Keiji Inafune resigns from Capcom

Capcom's head of research and development leaves post after 23-year run; will be replaced by Katsuhiko Ichii.

Keiji Inafune may have had a long stint at Japanese developer Capcom, but today the producer of Onimusha and Dead Rising decided to finally call it quits. The 23-year veteran, who rose through the ranks from graphic designer to become the publisher-developer's head of research and development, announced his departure on his blog, saying he will "resign later this month."

Inafune's career at Capcom is dead, not rising.
Inafune's career at Capcom is dead, not rising.

Inafune originally joined Capcom as a graphic designer, working on the first Street Fighter. He went on to create the character design for Mega Man and then worked on the game's many sequels before graduating to the role of producer. More recently, Inafune produced the Onimusha, Lost Planet, and Dead Rising franchises.

Inafune has been outspoken about his games, Capcom, and development in general. Earlier this year, he told the New York Times, "I look around the Tokyo Game Show, and everyone's making awful games; Japan is at least five years behind." He also stated, "I want to make games that travel overseas, but Capcom hasn't taken globalization seriously."

Inafune oversaw Capcom's move to outsourcing its franchises to Western developers, including Swedish studio GRIN for Bionic Commando and Canada-based Blue Castle, (now Capcom Game Studio Vancouver), for Dead Rising 2.

Inafune's resignation comes the day after Capcom released its latest financial report, which contained a mix of good and bad news for the company. While Dead Rising 2 has sold 1.8 million copies, Lost Planet 2's weak performance helped cause a net profit slide of ¥1.78 billion ($22 million), down 39.9 percent over April-September the previous year.

Speaking with GameSpot, Capcom said it will restructure its development organization following Inafune's departure. Katsuhiko Ichii will be appointed head of the development organization and will be supported by a new development management team consisting of Nobuyuki Matsushima, Jun Takeuchi, Taichiro Genbun, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, and Shutaro Kobayashi. The new unit will also integrate marketing and development functions from within the company to offer a "broader stroke approach to the development process," according to Capcom.

Yep, they were calling for somebody's head, and he had to be the fall guy. I'm sure he could find work somewhere else, which he is rather young, and that may have helped lead to his demise.

On one hand, he is the creator of my favorite franchise, just gotta love the Blue Bomber, I have been playing those game since MM1, on the other, his “LETS WESTERNIZE OUR STUFF” mentality is what has completely ruined DmC on my eyes….. such mixed feelings.

Seeing how Inafune was the one pushing for "Westernization" (am I the only one that shivers from shame at that term?), I only see this as good for Capcom. I don't mean this in a mean way, Inafune is quite a legend, but their departure from one another might just translate to better products from both sides.

@SolidTy: You're right. With Kamiya, Mikami and Atsushi Inaba (DMC, Phoenix Wright, Steel Battalion, Viewtiful Joe series, Okami and God Hand) and Keiji inafune; Platinum Games will be indestructable (will be a publisher or still a solid development studio). Only time will tell.

Lost Planet 2 wasn't outsourced and it was Capcom's biggest financial disaster, whereas Dead Rising 2 was outsourced and the game has sold very well.

I don't get why Capcom keeps doing the same stupid things over and over such as outsourcing their games to western developers, good example is letting Ninja Theory make DmC, bad move Capcom...

That really sucks, I guess there goes Dead Rising 3? And why are they surprised that such a weak game like Lost Planet 2 had weak sales.

I'm a bit saddened by this news. Inafune and Capcom have been sort of a "stability" over the years. I loved many of the games he created. But what will happen to future Mega Man games now?

Wonder if Inafune will start his own dev company or maybe jump over to Platinum like a lot of senior Capcom devs seem to be doing. @Oni_Taedo - Hope you meant to say Star Wars not Star Trek. Cause otherwise you clearly have no clue what you're talking about. I'm gonna go with the latter.

I think this guy is only really looking at certain parts of the game industry when he says this, and is ignoring other crucial areas. Sure, the West is the leader in MMOs, console games and casual online games, but the East is the leader in handheld games and retro games. I get the feeling that he is looking at it as a technologically inferior thing, but imo that isn't the way to look at a game. Is a game only fun if it has good graphics? Is this the only kind of game that people want to play? I think not, and there will always be a market for the classic platformer or traditional turn-based RPG.

Guess this is bad new for Megaman Legends 3 development. Fortunately Capcom has proved that their main series can survove even without the people who created them, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and Street Fighter come to mind. Anyway, I wish the best for Mr. Inafune. I hope he can produce more games with another company. Valhalla Studios, please?

Doesn't say what he's going to do next but this is hardly shocking given his comments about the state of japanese games. IMO resident evil 4 was the last truly revolutionary thing that capcom had released. they've certainly put out some great games since but a lot of them had some seriously questionable design choices (dead risings AWFUL save system). inafune is just the latest big name to get fed up and leave the company. i dont necessarily agree with his broad statement about japanese game development since some of the biggest strides forward in gaming have come FROM japan, but i can see where he's coming from. i hope his next move is something good. @Oni_Taedo - yeah the 96 on metacritc disagrees with you

Japan Dev's are getting killed buy US Dev's. He knows it and he might be looking for a job with a US dev. For almost 20 years Japan has been on top when it came to making games.

@SolidTy dude I agree with you 100% Capcom is losing all it's best devs Shiji Mikami is the king of the RE franchise and Jun Takeuchi can't compare now without Kenji Infune The Dead Rising series will be good but nowhere near as good as it was.

@Virtual_Erkan Okay, I'm just going to lol here for a moment. Did you actually call Mass Effect 2... good? It's fine to like it, but it's as stereotypically sci-fi as sci-fi can get. It's as close as possible to being Star Trek as you can get without it actually being Star Trek.

Sure Inafune was greatly influential to Capcom's success until now, however, I cannot agree with the concept of Westernizing Japanese games by any means. It's better if they stay with what they know and avoid re-inventing the wheel.

If you remember the article that mentioned Mega Man Legends 3, it was never talked about by Keiji Inafune it was actually a guy in the audience that mentioned it after Keiji said a new Mega Man was in the works along with MM Universe. When the guy in the audience had mentioned this Keiji just laughed and through foam mega busters out to the audience. There has yet to be official mention on Mega Man Legends 3 by Keiji or Capcom, it would be nice to a new entry to Legends. Keiji may be the head of R&D, but he still has to follow orders from the Capcom executives on what to do with titles. Keiji will probably create a new studio, this means more positions in the industry. I wonder if he would plan on starting up a new company in the States instead of Japan. Either way I think it might be a new company instead of being picked up by one. I just worry about Mega Man's future, will there finally be an end to the original series?, will Proto Man die from the virus?, will the X series finally enter the Elf Wars?, did Zero actually die in the Zero series?

Aside from creative vision disputes, he's basically been insulting the company that pays him and supplies him with resources for some time. Now I know that speaks volumes in any country when you work for an employer and then insult them. Regarding the Japanese business model though, it seems he was just wanting to get pounded by his employer. Now to be fair and polite though he has had an extremely influential hold over gaming for his time since the 80s. That being said it has been an overall fabulous run and I (as a gamer) appreciate all of his positive contributions to gaming. Well done Inafune, well done...

I'm sure that someone as talented as him won't be unemployed for long. It's Capcom's loss, not his. Best of luck to you, Keiji Inafune.
