DSi XL hits US & EU Q1 2010, DS sales top 113 million

[UPDATE] Fourth DS hardware revision will sport 4.2-inch screens and larger stylus, cost ¥20,000 ($220.50) in Japan; 11.7 million units of DS hardware sold in last six months.

Two days after it dismissed a Nikkei newswire article as speculative, Nintendo has confirmed that a new version of its DSi handheld, the DSi LL, will go on sale in Japan this year. [UPDATE] European and US reps for Nintendo have now confirmed it will also debut in Q1 2010 in North America and Europe, where it will be called the DSi XL.

As had been reported, the new DSi will sport two screens measuring 4.2 inches in diagonal diameter, far larger than the current DSi's 3.25-inch screens or the DS Lite's 3-inch screens. The DSi LL's screens almost as large as the single screen of the Sony PSP-3000, which measures in at 4.3 inches. Battery life will run 4 to 5 hours on maximum brightness and 13 to 17 hours on lowest brightness, on par with the DS Lite. (A translation error initially indicated the battery life would only be 3 hours, which is the unit's charging time.)

No Caption Provided

As shown on Nintendo Japan's official Web site, the handheld will also sport both a regular stylus and an easier-to-hold stylus shaped like a rounded pen. The handheld will go on sale in Japan on November 21 for a cost of ¥20,000 ($220.50) and will be available in three colors: wine red (pictured), dark brown, and natural white.

No Caption Provided

The handheld is the fourth version of DS hardware in as many years, following the original DS (2004-2005), the DS Lite (2006), and the DSi (2008-2009). As part of an earnings report today, Nintendo announced that as of September 30, it had sold 113.48 million units of DS hardware, with 11.7 million units sold in the six months from April to September. The portable remains the best-selling platform in the US, selling 524,200 units during the NPD Group's September 2009 reporting period.

The DSi's introduction will raise some issues with the US' 2.2 million DSi owners who have bought games from the DSi store. According to reports, DSiWare games are not transferable to another handheld, meaning they would have to be repurchased on any new DSi. The larger screens, however, will have greater appeal to demographics with poor eyesight, such as the elderly.

[UPDATE] When contacted by GameSpot UK, Nintendo issued this statement regarding the new handheld's European launch: "Nintendo today confirms that a new Nintendo DSi XL console is launching in Europe in the first quarter of 2010. The retail price of the Nintendo DSi XL is expected to be higher than that of the Nintendo DSi. Further details will be released soon."

[UPDATE 2] Nintendo of America reps have now confirmed it will also be released in the US and Canada in Q1 2010, but had no further information other than the following statement:

"A new iteration of the Nintendo DSi system will be introduced in Japan on November 21, 2009. To be known as Nintendo DSi LL in Japan, and as Nintendo DSi XL in North America and Europe, it will offer a screen 93% larger than the current Nintendo DS Lite with a better view angle, an additional longer touch screen stylus, and pre-installed Nintendo DSiWare software. The new version will arrive in North America and Europe in the first quarter of calendar year 2010."

to "Krazykraz01" we know that they're not tryin 2 make us replace our old ds, ds lite or dsi, it's just that those who actually went out and bought a "dsi" not to long ago are mad because they weren't informed that a not so diferrent but larger dsi was coming out, ask any1 who bought a dsi, would they have bought a regular dsi or the dsi xl??

Guys, stop whining over this. It's not a replacement, it's just an extra option that may appeal to those with below-average eyesight. They know there's basically no incentive to buy this as a replacement over the older versions, and it's not being marketed as such.

DOES NINTENDO DO ANY PRODUCT RESEARCH BEFORE THEY RELEASE PRODUCTS? my god, every 6 months their releasing a new form of the DS and people eat it up. Stop just remaking the same thing, over and over and over and over again.

I bought the DSi when it came out because my old DS lite was screwed up. Don't get me worng I really like my DSi, but the fact that a new one is out so soon kinda makes me mad. Still the only things they added was a bigger screen and stylus which I can live without, however they need to come out with an entirely new handheld. Oh and am I the only one that thinks the red wine and brown colors look horrible?

so basically what we have here is an ant and a beetle , they are very small, but the beetle is technically bigger, but in the end to a negligible degree; why is nintendo spending so much time beating a dead dog that is the ds, which most people already have, and i dont know do something to improve their inferior console

and i 6 months they will release a DSi XL Lite wich will be smaller and will have 2x 3.25 inchs screens will have the same price point than this and will ... and again lots of people will buy it too. It seems that almost every DS owner have multiple versions or even colors of the system... That's not real installed base. The people loves to throw away the hard earned money.... why not make it bigger since the DSi??? Why until now???

It is clearly intended for an older crowd who would benefit from larger screens and a more pen like stylus.

This isn't a hardware revision. It's a hardware option for those who already haven't gotten a ds. Personally I would want the smaller one.

How about a hardware upgrade? I passed on the DSi and I will pass on this Hummer sized DS that is still equipped with a 4 cylinder engine as well!

This is getting really old. Stop remaking the same console almost every year with new features, and release an actually new portable in three or four years. We now have a DS, DS Lite, DSi(which came out a few months ago!), and now a DSi XL. That's overkill. I have my orignal launch day DS still, and I have no motivation to go get a new one except that it's scratched on the screen and chipped a bit on the plastic. It still plays games though, so I don't see why I'd even do that.

I like that we have the choice of 4 different versions of the same console. It makes me laugh (just a tiny bit) that so many people have a little hissy fit at this news though. Seriously, get some perspective.

Im amazed and not just that Nintendo would release a larger version of a portable without any extra features. Im amazed people are going off the deep end over this console. Nintendo hasnt announced a discontinuation of any handhelds and your not forced to buy the XL either. Buying video game stuff at launch has always been its own reward. I bought a DSi at Launch and I wouldnt trade it for any other DS because its my first DS.

Why would I want a bigger DSi? The DSi I already have barely fits in my pockets of any of my pants! Also, wouldn't the resolution of the games stretch so much that the graphics would look worse?

Anyways, if you already have a regular dsi there's no need to get this. This isn't even an upgrade, it just gives more option so if you don't carry it everywhere you can have one with a bigger screen. If this dsi was released before the smaller one, you'd feel like the smaller one was an upgrade.

Hi Nintendo. Here's an idea. If you want to increase hardware sales, make better games. Making all these changes to the hardware isn't necessary. Has anything even been released yet that uses the DSi's new features? And don't even get me started on DsiWare. What a joke.

Guys, remember, this was made for the old people that had trouble seeing the smaller screens of the regular dsi. They didn't make it for us, otherwise they would of improved stuff we complained about like the battery life.

Nintendo is the only company I see that gets this so much hate for doing what every other electronics company does, offering different versions and configurations of the same products. Nintendo hasn't "screwed" anyone with the DSi LL, nor is forcing or tricking anyone to buy a new version of the same system. I remember how many people swore that the Gameboy Advance SP would be the end of Nintendo. I've had a original DS since November 04 and a DS Lite since its launch in 06, I can't afford and don't need the DSi and I'm happy knowing my DS Lite has better battery life then the DSi or DSi LL and plays every single DS Cartridge ever released. Nintendo is competing with Apple now, and they've got to provide multiple attractive options for their hardware to compete. Also, this model makes a significant sacrifice in battery life and portability, so I don't see how bigger screens alone make this version stupendously better to the point where the normal DSi is obsolete or worthless. If purchased a DSi at launch this new announcment would not have bothered me at all.

As much as I love Nintendo, I'm baffled by their reasoning in bringing this out, especially so soon. It will only have been a year or possibly less since the release of the DSi so why bring out a new model that has the least amount of new features of any DS revision?

Every 2nd kid I see has a DS variant these days. I wasn't really paying attention but I didn't realize this would be the 4th variant in 5 years. Nintendo really knows how to milk these lil buggers nowadays. I personally haven't played handhelds since Sega Game Gear so good thing since it's hard enough justifying all the money I spend on consoles. Theres another AAA or 3 coming out every week right now it seems.

I could imagine that maybe this summer Nintendo would release another DSi including a GBA slot. :P That would probably further irritate Nintendo's consumers. :) It's bigger anyways, so why not release it with one. :)

I think we can expect the DSi to have lower sales this coming season? I think it was the wrong time for Nintendo to announce this release, or at least, it was a big mistake on their part to have this leaked out. Who in their right mind would want a DSi now, when after the holiday season, you'll be able to get the newer larger DSi? :) And all this stuff about Nintendo saying they made this move for the 'elderly' is total BS. I can probably guarantee that the total percentage of DS and DSi owners aren't the elderly.

Notice that there is no information about the resolution of the screen? When it's 4.2 inches and if Nintendo keeping the screens at the same resolution as DS, DS Lite, and DSi, 256 x 192 pixels, you can only see pixelated graphics. That's the problem with DSi having a larger screen than DS lite which makes the graphics not as crystal clear. Increase the resolution, otherwise, this DSi XL is not going to sell. iPhone has 3.5" 480 x 320, Aspect Ratio (3:2) PSP3000 has 4.3" 480x272,Aspect Ratio (16:9) PSPgo has 3.8" 480 x 272, Aspect Ratio (16:9), Crispier graphics than PSP3000 due to smaller LCD screen size with the same resolution DSi has 3.25" 256 x 192, Aspect Ratio (4:3) DSi XL has 4.2" 256 x 192, Aspect Ratio (4:3), Worst screen ever!

"The larger screens, however, will have greater appeal to demographics with poor eyesight, such as the elderly." As a 28-year-old I'm being included among the elderly? I mean, yeah I'm nearsighted, but with glasses I can see perfectly fine. I just like big colorful screens because I want to be able to see what I'm actually playing. Does no one realize just how small the DS's screens are? They're ridiculous. I actually might have to own a Nintendo system again next year. Wish me luck finding games like Elite Beat Agents and Final Fantasy IV. ;)
