DSi XL hits US & EU Q1 2010, DS sales top 113 million

[UPDATE] Fourth DS hardware revision will sport 4.2-inch screens and larger stylus, cost ¥20,000 ($220.50) in Japan; 11.7 million units of DS hardware sold in last six months.

Two days after it dismissed a Nikkei newswire article as speculative, Nintendo has confirmed that a new version of its DSi handheld, the DSi LL, will go on sale in Japan this year. [UPDATE] European and US reps for Nintendo have now confirmed it will also debut in Q1 2010 in North America and Europe, where it will be called the DSi XL.

As had been reported, the new DSi will sport two screens measuring 4.2 inches in diagonal diameter, far larger than the current DSi's 3.25-inch screens or the DS Lite's 3-inch screens. The DSi LL's screens almost as large as the single screen of the Sony PSP-3000, which measures in at 4.3 inches. Battery life will run 4 to 5 hours on maximum brightness and 13 to 17 hours on lowest brightness, on par with the DS Lite. (A translation error initially indicated the battery life would only be 3 hours, which is the unit's charging time.)

No Caption Provided

As shown on Nintendo Japan's official Web site, the handheld will also sport both a regular stylus and an easier-to-hold stylus shaped like a rounded pen. The handheld will go on sale in Japan on November 21 for a cost of ¥20,000 ($220.50) and will be available in three colors: wine red (pictured), dark brown, and natural white.

No Caption Provided

The handheld is the fourth version of DS hardware in as many years, following the original DS (2004-2005), the DS Lite (2006), and the DSi (2008-2009). As part of an earnings report today, Nintendo announced that as of September 30, it had sold 113.48 million units of DS hardware, with 11.7 million units sold in the six months from April to September. The portable remains the best-selling platform in the US, selling 524,200 units during the NPD Group's September 2009 reporting period.

The DSi's introduction will raise some issues with the US' 2.2 million DSi owners who have bought games from the DSi store. According to reports, DSiWare games are not transferable to another handheld, meaning they would have to be repurchased on any new DSi. The larger screens, however, will have greater appeal to demographics with poor eyesight, such as the elderly.

[UPDATE] When contacted by GameSpot UK, Nintendo issued this statement regarding the new handheld's European launch: "Nintendo today confirms that a new Nintendo DSi XL console is launching in Europe in the first quarter of 2010. The retail price of the Nintendo DSi XL is expected to be higher than that of the Nintendo DSi. Further details will be released soon."

[UPDATE 2] Nintendo of America reps have now confirmed it will also be released in the US and Canada in Q1 2010, but had no further information other than the following statement:

"A new iteration of the Nintendo DSi system will be introduced in Japan on November 21, 2009. To be known as Nintendo DSi LL in Japan, and as Nintendo DSi XL in North America and Europe, it will offer a screen 93% larger than the current Nintendo DS Lite with a better view angle, an additional longer touch screen stylus, and pre-installed Nintendo DSiWare software. The new version will arrive in North America and Europe in the first quarter of calendar year 2010."

Wow. At least with GBA, you got remarkable different upgrades to the system. A GBA, the SP, or even the micro had distinctly different styles and ways of play. This is just... kinda weird to say the least. I don't know why Nintendo feels motivated to release yet another SKU of its famed DS. It seems trivial and odd to me. At the same time, if it brings in more people to the crowd and brings in more games to be played, I'm all for it. I guess I just wish Nintendo would give more of a heads up for the console. I have a friend with all 3 of the versions of the DS. I sure hope he doesn't feel motivated to go out and by this one. The fact that this doesn't sport ANY technical differences aside from screen length seems like wasted opportunity for Nintendo though...

Unnecessary. Not to mention disrespectful to whoever ran over a store to buy the new DSi when it came out. I bet many people would like to have the choice of a bigger screen, even though I, myself, would not choose any of these two DSi. The DS Lite still reigns.

I'm happy with my original DS phat. If it ever broke I'd consider this just for the big screen.

I bought a DS Lite over a DSi for a few reasons. 1. GBA games play on a lite, not on the DSi 2. the Lite is small, portable, and comes in more colors. 3. The camera and the online store are both almostly completly useless with little support for both features. Finally, a price point of $139cad compared to the $200 (at time of purchase) made the purchase of a DSi over a Lite an easy decision. Kinda like buying a $250 PSPGO to replace a PSP 3000 (for nearly twice the price) the DSi and the new DSi XL are completly useless devices that will definatly not get my money.

So, let me get this straight. They went from clunky DS to tiny DS to a tiny DS with a Camera and now its back to clunky DS only this clunky DS has camera! Holy crap the creative juices are really flowing over at Nintendo! @eddy_purpus If they are going back to clunky, they should as least go back to using GBA games. I mean hell, so far it's the only redeeming factor when it comes to the DS really.

@speed2fast It's Nintendo. They do the opposite of everyone else. No HD, make things not as powerful, make things fatter, not skinnier. They're trendsetters.

Larger screen with the same resolution, it's like the inverse of the Game Boy Micro. At least it makes more sense to pay more for a bigger screen, not a smaller one, but I do wonder when it becomes too big to be easy to play as a portable. I will have to see when I can get my hands on one to demo it, but price may be the biggest obstacle. I don't want to pay $200+ for a portable.

the ridiculously big size convinced me that i should still get the regular DSi. this is obviously not something for people who want portability, like me. i'm trying to move from my DS phat to something smaller, so i can carry around. getting a DSi XL would be completely illogical.

That thing is freakin' huge. What I liked about the DS lite/i was its portability factor. I don't care about bigger screens. I don't want to lug around a "handheld" that's practically a small netbook.

i heared that they did the ds1 more powerfull and is the new ds, so then for an excuse to use the camera, in the legend of zelda dsi you will have to take a photo of yourself and put it to link and zelda, mm if it was my face zelda would look cool.... just joking (about zelda).

didn't buy a dsi because I knew this sort of thing would happen, may not even buy this, because there will probably be another DS before its lifespan ends, however, if this thing is able to produce pretty good picture quality (as in its not much worse than the DS Lite) its a buy. It looks amazing, however I need to actually use one to be sold.

This is what the first DSI should of been like. Nintendo should let everyone who bought a DSI trade it in and get the new DSI for no extra cost. How dare they bring this out so soon after the first!

I always knew I wanted two DSi's; one exclusively for DSiWare, one for DS games. I was planning to import this monster, but, Q1 2010 doesn't seem too far off and I can save $100+. I'm waiting, then :P
