DSi XL hits US & EU Q1 2010, DS sales top 113 million

[UPDATE] Fourth DS hardware revision will sport 4.2-inch screens and larger stylus, cost ¥20,000 ($220.50) in Japan; 11.7 million units of DS hardware sold in last six months.

Two days after it dismissed a Nikkei newswire article as speculative, Nintendo has confirmed that a new version of its DSi handheld, the DSi LL, will go on sale in Japan this year. [UPDATE] European and US reps for Nintendo have now confirmed it will also debut in Q1 2010 in North America and Europe, where it will be called the DSi XL.

As had been reported, the new DSi will sport two screens measuring 4.2 inches in diagonal diameter, far larger than the current DSi's 3.25-inch screens or the DS Lite's 3-inch screens. The DSi LL's screens almost as large as the single screen of the Sony PSP-3000, which measures in at 4.3 inches. Battery life will run 4 to 5 hours on maximum brightness and 13 to 17 hours on lowest brightness, on par with the DS Lite. (A translation error initially indicated the battery life would only be 3 hours, which is the unit's charging time.)

No Caption Provided

As shown on Nintendo Japan's official Web site, the handheld will also sport both a regular stylus and an easier-to-hold stylus shaped like a rounded pen. The handheld will go on sale in Japan on November 21 for a cost of ¥20,000 ($220.50) and will be available in three colors: wine red (pictured), dark brown, and natural white.

No Caption Provided

The handheld is the fourth version of DS hardware in as many years, following the original DS (2004-2005), the DS Lite (2006), and the DSi (2008-2009). As part of an earnings report today, Nintendo announced that as of September 30, it had sold 113.48 million units of DS hardware, with 11.7 million units sold in the six months from April to September. The portable remains the best-selling platform in the US, selling 524,200 units during the NPD Group's September 2009 reporting period.

The DSi's introduction will raise some issues with the US' 2.2 million DSi owners who have bought games from the DSi store. According to reports, DSiWare games are not transferable to another handheld, meaning they would have to be repurchased on any new DSi. The larger screens, however, will have greater appeal to demographics with poor eyesight, such as the elderly.

[UPDATE] When contacted by GameSpot UK, Nintendo issued this statement regarding the new handheld's European launch: "Nintendo today confirms that a new Nintendo DSi XL console is launching in Europe in the first quarter of 2010. The retail price of the Nintendo DSi XL is expected to be higher than that of the Nintendo DSi. Further details will be released soon."

[UPDATE 2] Nintendo of America reps have now confirmed it will also be released in the US and Canada in Q1 2010, but had no further information other than the following statement:

"A new iteration of the Nintendo DSi system will be introduced in Japan on November 21, 2009. To be known as Nintendo DSi LL in Japan, and as Nintendo DSi XL in North America and Europe, it will offer a screen 93% larger than the current Nintendo DS Lite with a better view angle, an additional longer touch screen stylus, and pre-installed Nintendo DSiWare software. The new version will arrive in North America and Europe in the first quarter of calendar year 2010."

So, the DS Lite and DSi was supposed to make it lighter and smaller, but now it's bigger again? So many versions to keep track of...

@KittyHeart: LOL,DS have really bad graphics and that touch screen gets really old,you don't have tekken on DS,and chinatown wars plays better on PSP,i'm not sure about this console,i mean i can't live my whole life playing super mario, but if they create too much of them (super mario games) and lower the price of this console,i might change my mind.

@pizzaboysam Ditto. And you WON'T be able to transfer your downloade DSiWare games, either. Note: most DSiWare games are cheesey parlor $***, to begin with. I love my DSlite and still play GBA games on it. The DSi and DSiLL look like a jip to me. Pass. I really don't like alotta what's happened to gaming this generation. I think I'll stick with my DSlite and PS2 for another 4 year stretch. I'm gonna skip the 7th gen. The console makers have lost it.

I don't see any problems with this. There's no changes. It's the exact same thing just a little bigger to appeal to more people. (That's what she said) For those of you who have a DSi already there isn't any reason to complain or upgrade. I'm sure the original DSi will still be availible aswell. Just to those who it appeals. I don't think Nintendo meant this to make everyone upgrade again.

Same, my hands always cramped after playing my ds lite, which really made me not want to play it. I actually just sold it on ebay. I will say that I won't be buying another ds, though, no matter what--not to say it's a bad system at all--I just found out that I'm not much of a handheld gamer.

@Nosferatu2894 Its twice as much as a regular DSi, and just bigger and a stylus that looks like an actual pen. Just go with the original.

@Nabsol I believe this is targeted towards people who didn't think the DSi was worth upgrading from DSL. It's caught my attention.

For me the best thing about the DSi XL is that it appears to be much more comfortable for big adult hands.

hugely dissappointed with nintendo... first they hold supplies on the Wii creating a buying frenzy around it, then they bring out rubbish games for it except for two imo....(SMG and Zelda)... now they bring out the 4th iternation of the ds..... ive had all 3 so far. This is a joke...

Nobody will agree with this, but why couldn't they keep the Game Boy aspects and allow Virtual Console downloads for Game Boy, Game Gear, Game Boy Color, Neo-Geo Pocket Color, Atari Lynx, WonderSwan and Virtual Boy? Also, why no internal storage? It'd be nice to have a few GB of internal storage and then be able to use a 32 GB or 64 GB SDHC card in the SD slot for the store. Just thinking, is all.

This should have been the first DSi, the larger screen kind of justifies the lack of a gba slot, but still i like to play guitar hero so I won't be buying one when it comes out

I'll probably get this for the DSi store, but keep my lite so I can play gba games, use the rumble pack, and transfer pokemon. (RIP my phat DS, died of a cracked top screen)

Good for people who don't have a DS yet, but in the middle or not at all for people who already own one. It's the same thing going on with the PSP. If you already have one, be happy. If you don't? Buy one, or enjoy your home console and cell phone games.

Let me guess, 3 months from now they'll release one with 3 cameras and make it even bigger. What a stupid idea, that stylus look so stupid to.

This should have been THE DSi. Players rushed to buy the 1st version just to get stuck to it forever.

Well I think this is a fine idea on Nintendo's part if you ask me. It basically gives consumers more choices for what they want in their DS. So if they want a DS with larger screens and a thicker stylus they can buy the DSi XL. And for those of you who already have DS systems, or just want to bash it because it's the fourth model, just remember, no one is making you buy one. This is just good for those out there that still haven't bought a DS yet, and gives them another option. I just bought my DSi so I won't be picking up a DSi LX, but for those of you who don't have one, I think this seems like a good pick.

As I don't own a DSi yet, I'm totally sold on this. A major jump in screen size like this is good enough for me.

Okay I'm sorry but WTF is wrong with Nintendo? The DS Lite was a well done revision and definitely needed The DSi wasn't exactly needed but it brought many new features to the DS. But this... this is just stupid. What the hell was wrong with the DSi (which I should add just came out less than a year ago)?

is this the answer to the PSPGo?? after trimming the DS down from the old fat one, they are going right back. bigger screens are cool, but is the resolution going to keep up?
