Assassin's Creed 2, new Ghost Recon due by April '10; I Am Alive delayed

[UPDATE] Ubisoft confirms stealthy, heavily armed sequels will join postponed survival horror game on next year's release docket.

Last Thanksgiving, French publisher Ubisoft--unburdened by Turkey-gorging duties--issued a robust earnings report for the six months ended September 30, 2008. As part of that earnings release, the company confirmed that it was working on a follow-up to Assassin's Creed, which has sold an estimated 5 million units worldwide. Later rumors had the game forgoing the original's medieval Middle Eastern setting for Revolutionary France.

No Caption Provided

Today, as part of another healthy financial report, Ubisoft referred to Assassin's Creed 2 by name, declaring that it will ship sometime during the 12 months ending March 31, 2010. Given that the first game was one of Ubisoft's tent-pole holiday 2007 games, a Q4 2009 launch looks likely. Ubisoft's next fiscal year will also see a sequel to the popular high-tech shooter Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, originally released in March 2007.

"Our [fiscal year 2009-10] lineup comprises several potential blockbusters with the launch of seven franchises, including Assassin's Creed [2], Splinter Cell [Conviction], and a new Ghost Recon, as well as four license-based games including James Cameron's Avatar, three new brands, and a further-enhanced casual-games portfolio," crowed Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. "Although we have to be cautious in light of the current economic environment, we expect Ubisoft to once again be one of the most dynamic and profitable publishers in the games industry in [calendar year] 2009." Ubisoft also said it would launch four movie-license-based titles during the year, including one based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

[UPDATE] Initially, the new Ghost Recon was presumed to be a third Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter game. However, since the publication of this story, GameSpot has learned the project in question will be an all-new game in the Tom Clancy series, not a sequel to the popular GRAWs.

Unfortunately, the excitement generated by the Assassin's Creed 2 and Ghost Recon revelations was tempered somewhat by confirmation of a major delay. I Am Alive, the multiplatform horror-survival game that was the centerpiece of Ubisoft's E3 2008 presentation, "will require further development time and will now bolster the lineup for 2009-10," the company said. Previously, it was expected to arrive for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this spring.

PS Forget the crossbow, Altair should be able to the shoot the wristblade. Or he should attach it to a chain so that he can shoot, kill, retract and freerun to the bay so that he can SWIM to safety. May sound corny, but I think that it'd be cool... :D

if they fix most of the wrongs with AC1, then AC2 is gonna pwn everything. Shame that they have to delay I Am Alive though, I REALLY want to see more on that game. :(

Assassin's Creed was definitely a great game, and I have high hopes for the sequel. Also, in regard to what 501174dc said, I too hope they allow users to use the crossbow from the original game's intro movie. I was thinking Altair would get his hands on one in the first game, but that was a no go.

Wait all these games suck lol. Anyone buying Assassins Creed wow that was horrible. I guess some gamers love to waste their money. Killzone 2 is definately a must buy for true gamers.

I think the Ghost Recon series needs to be completely reshapen. Remember the old ones? Even just the first, the fighting was so much more intense and the game was far more open for exploration. Also, going at missions in a variety of ways was always entertaining. These new ones have lost that feeling completely. You feel no attachment to your squad and every enemy that appears shows up on radar. I guess what I want is a Ghost Recon that isn't based in advanced warfare. I really have no interest in Assassin's Creed 2. I am still playing the first but it is a bit too repetitive, I don't think I could endure another 400 flags.

Just bought Assassins Creed for $17 and loving it. Sequel should have some more creative weaponry. crossbows, torture devices, etc. GRAW 2 was and is amazing. They should keep the multiplayer exciting and don't change the formula too much.

Was there any surprise that I Am Alive would be delayed? I mean, they showed it to the public one month before it was supposed to be released. Where the hell is the logic in that? Even if it is finished, there's not sufficient interest or knowledge of the game. Someone really should see if the marketing department is drunk or something...

The only thing I'm worried about with the new Splinter Cell is that the gameplay might seem kind of lacking when compared to Assassin's Creed. I mean, SC:C is based on public stealth, hiding in crowds, just like AC. The only thing that I've seen that's different is the modern setting (meaning the use of guns and things like that). BUT one of the things that made AC so great was the building climbing aspect of it. You can't really climb a whole bunch of buildings in the middle of DC, so that can't be in the game. If they want to make SC:C good, they have to REALLY get the public stealth system down and make it very realistic. The stealth system in AC honestly wasn't as good as I thought it should have been, so hopefully its fixed up nicely for AC2 and SC:C. And hopefully they'll have something interesting to add to Splinter Cell.

@sl33py_boy Remember when Assassin's Creed was never PS3 exclusive from the start? Sony paid Ubisoft to not reveal that it was multiplatform for as long as possible, in order to drive hype and interest for the PS3.

Wow, this really should not have said anything about Assassin's Creed 2 being set in Revolutionary France. This was A RUMOR. Nothing more. I'll quote the original article. "During the course of the show, the Wedbush Morgan game-industry soothsayer said that Assassin's Creed would be set 'several hundred years' after the original game, 'sometime in the 1700s.' Not content with a time frame, Pachter went on to 'speculate that the French Revolution could be a potential setting.' " SPECULATE. The guy didn't know crap about the game, he's an analyst. He's just saying stuff like that to stir up excitement for the game.

This is all very fantastic. But I wouldn't doubt another epic delay on Conviction. That game was originally supposed to be out Nov 2007. It's now almost Feb 09 and there has still been nothing in the way of relevant (Splinter Cell rap/writing contests don't count...ubisoft...) updates, screenshots, footage, INFO, etc. The official site has **gasp** FOUR WHOLE screen caps!!! (-_-)

@ thenephariouson I agree with the assassin's creed as long as it isn't more of the repetitive stuff. I loved both GRAWs too but they said it wouldn't be a GRAW2 sequel. They definately mentioned Splinter Cell Conviction.

I am definently getting the new splinter cell and assassins creed. I just don't think the new splinter cell can fail. I mean if it's like the first game, all stealthy like, I love it. But it it's like double agent in where you can go and shoot the crap out of everything and not fail the mission I'll be happy with that as well.
