Assassin's Creed 2, new Ghost Recon due by April '10; I Am Alive delayed

[UPDATE] Ubisoft confirms stealthy, heavily armed sequels will join postponed survival horror game on next year's release docket.

Last Thanksgiving, French publisher Ubisoft--unburdened by Turkey-gorging duties--issued a robust earnings report for the six months ended September 30, 2008. As part of that earnings release, the company confirmed that it was working on a follow-up to Assassin's Creed, which has sold an estimated 5 million units worldwide. Later rumors had the game forgoing the original's medieval Middle Eastern setting for Revolutionary France.

No Caption Provided

Today, as part of another healthy financial report, Ubisoft referred to Assassin's Creed 2 by name, declaring that it will ship sometime during the 12 months ending March 31, 2010. Given that the first game was one of Ubisoft's tent-pole holiday 2007 games, a Q4 2009 launch looks likely. Ubisoft's next fiscal year will also see a sequel to the popular high-tech shooter Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, originally released in March 2007.

"Our [fiscal year 2009-10] lineup comprises several potential blockbusters with the launch of seven franchises, including Assassin's Creed [2], Splinter Cell [Conviction], and a new Ghost Recon, as well as four license-based games including James Cameron's Avatar, three new brands, and a further-enhanced casual-games portfolio," crowed Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. "Although we have to be cautious in light of the current economic environment, we expect Ubisoft to once again be one of the most dynamic and profitable publishers in the games industry in [calendar year] 2009." Ubisoft also said it would launch four movie-license-based titles during the year, including one based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

[UPDATE] Initially, the new Ghost Recon was presumed to be a third Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter game. However, since the publication of this story, GameSpot has learned the project in question will be an all-new game in the Tom Clancy series, not a sequel to the popular GRAWs.

Unfortunately, the excitement generated by the Assassin's Creed 2 and Ghost Recon revelations was tempered somewhat by confirmation of a major delay. I Am Alive, the multiplatform horror-survival game that was the centerpiece of Ubisoft's E3 2008 presentation, "will require further development time and will now bolster the lineup for 2009-10," the company said. Previously, it was expected to arrive for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this spring.

They HAVE TO implement voice recognition in the new Ghost Recon game. Seeing how well Ubisoft made use of it in Tom Clancy's End War, it would be an abomination for them not to include VR in Ghost Recon.

@5sonic To hillsy You have your opinion and i respect it. But to say that anyone who thought it was fun needs a lesson... thats just rubbish. considering that it scored extremely high with critics and fans on compilation sites like metacritic you're basically calling 85% of gamers idiots. God help you in leading people to say AC sucks Well, I am saying reviewers maybe. Do you believe all the reviews you read or watch now? Open your mind. Honestly, but best I had with AC1 was climbing to the top and looking out while the camera pans around. I have been gaming for 29 years, and AC1 is nothing short of terrible.

Uhhh don't set it in Revolutionary France, set it in a time with NO guns, it will be so much more fun without guns. Also gamespot, there have been no rumours of it being set in Revolutionary France, you came up with that rumour. I remember when you posted that up here.

I'm really looking forward to AC2, but I was hoping that developers would have learned from Xmas 2008, that everyone releasing at that time does no-one any good. Spread the games throughout the year. If you make a great game people will buy it regardless of the time of year. Release when everyone else releases, and we won't have the cash to buy everything.

I know basically everything has been said about Assassin's Creed 2 for improvements but I think that more variation in the game will make it better and also making sure that the magic go stupidly slow so that no one notices button is less used but used more effectively say for instance, you don't have to use it on a horse when going to other locations as not to take about an hour without getting caught, better AI would be great and also at least one segment where you play as Desmond as an assassin would be a nice change from Altair or whomever it is this time, oh and don't mess up the story, AC2 would be looking at great reviews if this happened so I hope that they do well with it, I'll be looking forward to it

@ CoRiNi - You will more than likely play as another one of Desmond's ancestors... Remember... he was born into a family of assassins... all of his ancestors were assassins... Altair was just one of them...

@ RockmanSRD - How is it rushing things? Assassin's Creed 1 has already been made, they are using the original game engine for the sequel...? Basically all they have to do is make a new story and add 18th century weapons/cities into the mix and they are finished... 2 years is plenty of time for that... it is probably more than they need... I bet they already had a sequel in the works planned for a Q4 2008 release when AC1 was released... but they needed to change things after all the complaining of repetitiveness in the first game... That and the fact that I am tired of waiting years and years for games to be released... *cough cough* Killzone 2 *cough*

The only issue I have with Assasins Creed is that the Blend move was too good, I killed a guard who was talking to another guard, went straight into Blend and the guard was shouting 'Who done that'. Surely he saw me. GRAW3 should be excellent, first 2 were awesome (just too hard for me to complete)

if they do AC2 right and dodge the repetitivness that was in AC1 and just bring the crossbow and some minor changes this game will dominate 2009 and it will be given an easy 10

GRAW 3 is going to be good. Hope they spiced up the multiplayer a little bit though. Did have some good battles in GRAW 2 but there was plenty of room for improvement.

I'm hoping they fix a lot of the problems with Assassin's Creed in the sequel-the repetitive nature of it, and the very limited interaction with the environment.

valcrist09. You are a complete moron. The game you are looking for is a little ways down the shelf. It's called Oblivion. Assassin's Creed was fine the way it was. It is a rpg with great gameplay and a cool story. The game wasn't intended to be an action war stile game. It is suppose to be a stealth, strategic game. Like I said before you would probably like Oblivion more than Assassin's Creed. As far as GRAW 3 goes, I'm pretty psycht about it.

Assassin's Creed was amazing in its own way. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish - breathing in everything such as the gorgeous visuals, intriguing story, and unique gameplay. I do know exactly how Ubisoft Montreal can improve and capitalize on an upcoming sequel as well, which makes it that much more exciting to wait for it. If it's anything like its predecessor with a few tweaks to the formula, then I'm sold.

there better make Assassins Creed 2 a lot better then 1, the first one sucked so bad, why cant it be a cool medevil story instead of a stupid future story, also the AI needs to be greatly improved, there needs to be way more assassination moves and weapons, the towns need to be different, ... the First one sucked sooo much!! it had huge potential i wont make the same mistake twice... I will wait tell reviews and rent first..

Assassin's Creed [2], Splinter Cell [Conviction], and Ghost Recon [Advanced Warfighter 3]... What an amazing announcement :D I will look forward to all three of these games. Hopefully we wont have to wait for too long. My Xbox hungers for fresh meat(aka new games)! Recently it has turned into a noisy DVD-player... ;)
