Television Troubles!?

Well my birthday is coming up and given the hefty list of games slated to grace our video game consoles this year (see previous post for details), I've decided to celebrate by purchasing a HDtv LCD. Of course, the problem arises: just what exactly do I get? I've scoured all of my local electronics stores for something that matches what I want AND falls within my price range, and I've managed to narrow it down to the following three: Sharp LC-32D430, Vizio VX37L, and the Toshiba 32HL67. The Vizio caught my eye initially beause of its relative cheap price and the fact that it is 37 inches. Conversely the Toshiba and Sharp offer slightly better pictures for a bit more but only at 32 inches (Of the two I think I favor the Toshiba). On top of normal television viewing, I intend to use my LCD for each of the following:

-Next Gen Gaming: PS3, Xbox 360, Wii
-PC Monitor
-Blu-Ray Viewing

What do you think?

So there you have it, what do you recommend?

Top 5 I Ainticipate for the PS3

GAMES
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction

Oddly enough, I've never played a Ratchet and Clank game before. Well that's not true, I have played tidbits of its multiplayer game before but I've never actually played any of its epic single player. The visuals in this latest forray are absolutely jaw dropping and the weapons are top notch as usual. Needless to say, my first entrance to the world of Ratchet and Clank should be an amazing one.

Socom: Confrontation

Let's face it, I LOVE Socom. I mean I enjoyed Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, but Socom was the first tactical shooter I took with me to the internet and it blew my mind. It's latest installment was an utter disappointment for me, but with this latest game (multiplayer only) it looks like things are back on the right track. The map they showed on the trailer appears very similar to a map I played in Socom 2 quite a bit and that's great, because it just so happens to be my favorite one.

Little Big Planet

Geez, who doesn't think this game looks fun? Just creating your character is going to rock. Couple it with the PS3's Home network, and you have a combo that just screams intereative community!

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Visually jaw dropping. With the credentials of Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter, this game has everything going for it.

Heavenly Sword

You get to sword people in the groin. What's not to like?

Halo 3

This was sort of a no brainer right? Look at it. Seriously look at it.

Other games that I'm looking forward to include: Lair, Warhawk, Home, DMC4, Crysis, Final Fantasy, MGS4, GTA4, and The Darkness. Yah I'm aware that my list of games are steeped in PS3 titles, but that just goes to show you what a strong lineup it has. I'm not throwing my 360 out completely, but I'm going to need more than just Halo 3 (and first person shooters for that matter) if I'm going to be spending more time with it. I don't even no where my Wii is, so I'm going to presume my PS3 ate it.

Most Anticipated Games of 2007

Assassin's Creed

Throwing out all the amazing visuals we have seen so far in Assassins Creed as well as the interesting sci-fi plot, Ubisoft Montreal's project looks to feature the most innovative control scheme we've seen yet. Our hero Altair is controlled by four puppet strings -- the face buttons -- that are connected to his head, weapon hand, off hand and legs. At a demo at X06, the crowd went wild for the clever-killing action, and so did we.

Mass Effect

BioWare makes great games, bottom line. Instead of cranking out annual, half-assed follow-ups to aging franchises, BioWare takes the time to do it right -- something giant companies like EA and Ubisoft sometimes struggle with. Mass Effect is going to blend RPG elements with tactical-shooting and wrap it all up with an amazing story. Look for amazing visuals, an epic score and great gameplay from these masterful storytellers, and a probable game of the year in my humble opinion.

Halo 3

I don't think anyone has a doubt that Halo 3 is going to be a great game. Microsoft is probably throwing bars of solid gold at Bungie to see that it happens. I'm stoked to see a conclusion to a confusing story line that includes the giant plant from "Little Shop of Horrors." But really I'm looking forward to another amazing multiplayer experience, with four-player co-op (hoping!) and Bungie's stellar matchmaking and clan system.

Alan Wake

It's tough to explain exactly why I desperately want to play a game that I haven't even had the opportunity to see in motion yet. Maybe it extends from the hype this game has been getting from co-workers in editorial. Or maybe it is just the flat out beautiful screenshots. This game looks fantastic and the gameplay premise sounds like it has the goods to back up the flash.

BioShock

BioShock oozes atmosphere, along with many other nasty things that you probably don't want on your new shirt. It only takes one look at this game in motion to make you know that it is going to deliver one wild ride. It's the spiritual sequel to the System Shock series and if it isn't on your list of games that you have to play this year, pencil it in now.

What's your most Anticipated game of 2007?

!!!New Halo 3 EGM INFO!!!

TYPE-25 Rapid Assault Vehicle "Chopper"

Description The Type-25 RAV has become more common with the reappearance of the Brutes as frontline troops. Although it has not totally replaced the "ghost" as the primary rapid assault vehicle of the Covenant ground forces, it is usually piloted by higher ranking individuals. The vehicle is capable of momentary bursts of speed up to 120 kph (75 mph). The vehicle is armed with four (4) linked forward-firing light autocannons¹.

Weapon Statistics
Weight: 1 tonnes (1.1 tons)
Length: 6.4 meters (21 feet.)
Height: 2.9 meters (9.77 feet)
Width: 2.8 meters (9.33 feet)
Power plant: unknown
Range: 272 kilometers (169 miles)
Top Speed: 74 kph (46 mph)
Main armament: 4 x 35 mm autocannons (linked)
Unit Replacement Cost N/A

Observations
Although this vehicle is significantly slower than many of those available to UNSC ground forces it is capable of nearly doubling its top speed momentarily through some unknown mechanism. The Type-25 RAV, while stoutly built, is very lightly armored and the driver is completely exposed except from the front where the vehicle's prodigious engine provides more than adequate protection.

Remarks
"D'ya think they're compensating for something? I mean, look at the size of the damn thing-it's bigger than my first apartment."

"It doesn't have the room to accommodate a single passenger-and what do they do with their gear? Lash it on to the fenders?"

"They don't have a lot in the way of places you can stow your gear-it's basically a huge engine with a little bucket tied to it for you to stick your ass in. And big golf delta blades bolted to it, can't forget about the blades."

"All the markings are hand -painted. Well, at least they were on all the ones I've seen close up. I think [the Type-25] is more of a status symbol for the Brutes-or maybe a mount-than it is a just another piece of equipment."

"Yeah, [WO SWG-FoR/SO N'thro] 'Sraom basically confirmed that-said the riders held specific ranks outside the Covenant military hierarchy structure-that they're more of a traditional unit like Cossacks or something."

"They're not very fast, but they're like zombies-every time you turn around there they are breathing down your neck! Don't help that they're built like tanks, either."

"With that big damn motor you'd think they'd really fly, wouldn't you? I wonder if the Covenant romeo echo mike foxtrots slapped a governor on 'em like our do with the warthog?"

"I never thought I'd see somethin' that could tear up a warthog so completely short of an eight-oh-eight just by runnin' into it-are choppers put together out of old battleships or something?"

¹ The use of the term autocannon here is not entirely accurate even though the weapon is self-loading and fires a large caliber (35mm) projectile.

Spartan Variant: C.Q.B.

C.Q.B.: Close Quarters Battle
  • The Mjolnir/C variant was developed and tested at UNSC facilities in Essen, Deutschland and Songnam, Hanguk, respectively; integrating feedback gathered from the Jericho VII Theater.
  • Developed at Beweglichrüstungsysteme of Essen and tested at the Special Warfare Center in Songnam, the Mjolnir/C variant focuses on improving combat survivability and mobility.
  • The intent with the Mark VI Mjolnir Powered Assault Armor/C variant was to improve survivability in close combat; specifically by looking at alternate methods of K dispersal and improving joint mobility.

Spartan Variant: E.V.A.

E.V.A.: Extra Vehicular Activity
  • The MJOLNIR/V variant was developed and tested at the UNSC facilities in Lister, Aigburth, Ganymede; integrating feedback gathered from the Summa Deep Space Incident.
  • Developed at the UNSC Low/Zero Gravity Testing Facility on Ganymede, the MJOLNIR/V variant focuses on increasing exoatmospheric endurance and improving mobility in zero gravity.
  • In developing the Mark VI MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor/V variant emphasis was placed on increasing exoatmospheric endurance and improving mobility in zero gravity without the use or thrusters.

NEW Weapons
Mauler
- "This Brute shotgun comes with an extra deadly bonus: dual-wielding. "It's not quite as powerful as the shotgun," says Sandbox Design Lead Jamie Griesemer, "If you had a dual-wieldable shotgun and a regular shotgun and they did the same damage, you'd never use the regular one."

Gravity Hammer
- "Halo 3's Gravity Hammer-based on the Halo 2 final boss Tartarus' weapon-should make players as giddy as Halo 2's plasma sword did.
"It will do a short lunge like the sword does, but mostly you use it to do area-effect damage," explains Griesemer. "If a vehicle's trying to run you over, you can it the vehicle and send it flying. Or if someone throws a grenade at you, the shockwave from the hammer will send the grenade flying back."

On the 'armor section', a spartan is holding a new plasma turret of sorts, looks like a weird super-soaker.

NEW Vehicles
Hornet
- "This marine craft zips around and takes on Covenant Banshees in Campaign mode-we're betting it'll appear in multiplayer as well."

Prowler
- "This Brute craft holds a driver, a man on a forward-mounted turret, two passengers on the side, and looks like a jet engine on a sled."

Chief and couple of friends on a recon mission "Sierra 117"

Elephant
- "This'll be the Elephant." says Green, pointing to a three story tall behemoth thats crawling along the sand much like...a Jawa Sandcrawler (confirmed: These developers love their Star Wars). "It's a human recovery and mobile operations base. This is essentially a mobile base." The thing is big-big enough for about a dozen-plus to ride in or on, big enough to hold a Mongoose ATV in it's belly's bay, big enough to have a horn that sounds like it belongs on the Titanic. It's drivable (but indestructable), has a mounted turret, can respawn troops, holds your home flag, and is the return point for the enemy flag." Only on the map 'Sandtrap'.

NEW Equipment:
Personal Shield
- "Unlike the 360-degree bubble shield, this is a stationary version of the Jackal's handheld deflector, and it only protects against attacks from one direction. Stand behind the shield and fire through to his opponents on the other side." Looks like an old stationary shield from Halo 1.

Regenerator
- I can't really read the paragraph, but it says something about being the "opposite of the Power Drainer" and it "instantly recharges players shields". Looks like a green blob, new power-up prehaps?

Flare
- "The flare mainly blinds, rather than hurts. Anyone (friend or foe alike) who sees it-and that's OK. "If you have a short-range weapon, the Flare will blind opponents long enough for you to get close." says Griesemer. His favorite strategy? "See a bunch of people guarding their flag? Throw the Flare down," he says, "By the time the Flare's gone, their flag is, too." Just take cares to avert your eyes-the Flare will blind the player who throws it, too." Looks like the Power Drainer, but with yellow trim.

New Interface should have Metroid Prime fans mad. Looks sexy!!

Invincibility
- "Brute chieftains would be intimidating enough with the ability to command legions, but their temporary invincibility puts them right over the edge. "They'll hit it and then start charging you with their Hammer, and you basically have to run away." Griesemer says. This powerful device will appear in multiplayer, but don't except to see it too often." No picture.
NOTE: This is pretty obvious Tartarus in Halo 2 was using when you fought him on the last mission "The Great Journey".

NEW Metagame info:
Other NEW information:

-Forge IS a map 'tweaker', allowing you to change objects on a map.
A picture is shown with floating crates on High Ground and floating equipment, also shows a floating Power Drainer on High Ground where the Bubble Shield spawns, so you can change objects and equipment, weapons and vehicles too I imagine.

-The map 'Guardian', is the spiritual successor to 'Lockout'.
"We're rather fond of Lockout, as are players, so we wanted to make sure we were covering that map to scale." - Multiplayer Design Lead Tyson Green on a new map called Guardian.

-"Halo 3 should ship with 10 or 11 [multiplayer] maps total, not including future downloadable content.

-The new Elite armor is shown

-They are trying to add Online Co-op to the game because they know the fans want it. And if it dosen't make it to the final copy of the game, Bungie isn't ruling out DLC.

-A new gametype is created RTS ****in 'Monitor', a Monitor creates weapons and vehicles, and can destory them as well. There are other new, weirder gametypes like 'Grab The Mongoose' and 'Magic Carpet Ride', where you pick up an ally on a crate and run around trying not to drop him.
"...and the growing ground for something Bungie's calling "Campaign Scoring" a metagame that effectively turns the campaign mode into a competive challenge simlar to multiplayer. This metagame, which can be in solo or in co-op, tracks each player's preformance and assigns points to each kill; the more impressive the preformance, the higher the score. A normal Grunt kill might be worth 100 points, while a Grunt headshot would be worth twice as much. Killing a Brute will net more than killing a Jackal, but taking down a Brute by sticking it with a plasma grenade or taking down it's shield with an overcharged plasma pistol will multiply the score significantly. Players also earn points for certain actions, just like in multiplayer and lose points for particularly bone-headed maneuvers like killing their co-op partner. At the same time, you can boost your points by finding and activating hidden skulls, each of which unlocks a different aspect of the metagame. The Iron Skull, for instance, causes both players to be sent back to the most recent checkpoint when either dies; other skulls might double enemy hit points or cause them to attack only with grenades. Skull effects stack, so it's possible to have all of them on-although the resulting game experience would likely be impossible to complete. And, of course, all metagame stats appear on Bungie.net for all the world to admire (or mock)."

Though it doesn't look like the E3 '06 trailer this game should still be visually sexy!!

"EARTH'S IN A BAD WAY". "The alien Covenant have conquered the planet, tearing a mile-wide scar in the pristine Kenyan wilderness in search of the Ark, an ancient installation that can trigger the six remaining Halo space rings and annihilate all life in the galaxy. Meanwhile, the all-consuming, parasitic Flood have set their sights on our humble world."

PSP Fat vs. PSP Slim

Pictures: PSP Fat vs. PSP Slim
Details of the new PSP announced this week: It's a slimmer build and noticeably lighter when in hand. There is a glossy coat over the paint job, WLAN/Wi-fi switch moved to top of unit next to UMD drive. The UMD chassis has been streamlined; no awkward slide button to pop it open just a little groove you slip your thumb under and it pops out (much better). Sony has confirmed that additional RAM has been added to improve UMD load times in games. The battery is far, far lighter (and smaller). Plugging in a PSP Fat battery will give nearly double battery life according to Sony because the new PSP is far more "fuel efficient." The speakers have moved; they're close to the top of the unit, above your thumbs, and the D-pad and four action buttons have been vastly improved; they feel great, much more like PS3 controller. Includes HD video/audio out. Retails for $169. Due this September.

PS3 Double-digit Sales Gains Larger Than 360 & Wii on Ebay:

Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 held double-digit sales gains this week in the latest auction data from Ebay.
Sales for the PS3 were up 18 percent in the past two weeks, the largest gain among all new consoles, including Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360.

The PS3 ranked as the No. 3 Most Popular video game hardware on Ebay, with an average sale price of $598.91.

Sony last week lowered the price of the 60GB PS3 SKU in North America, which should spark additional movement in next week's sales.

In addition, it showcased new titles at the E3 Media & Business Summit, including Heavenly Sword, Lair, and Ratchet and Clank Future Tools of Destruction.

Sony has sold 1.4 million PS3 units in the U.S. to date. It expects to ship 11 million this business year.

The Simpsons vrs. Family Guy

Character Royal Rumble:The Simpsons vs The Griffins
I will pit each family member against the other and give my opinion on which family is better and which I prefer. So why not start at the top?

Homer Simpson vs Peter Griffin

OK, both are pretty dumb and have good things fall right in their lap. Personally, if they were to have a fight, I'd give the edge to Peter, he's bigger and just look at the fights with the chicken, he kicks major ass. But I'm not voting that way, personally there is no comparison, the winner here is Homer. He's done so much more like going into outer space. I like Peter alot, he's funny, but Homer Simpson is just on another level.

Simpsons 1-Family Guy 0

Chris Griffin vs Bart Simpson

I shouldn't even have to write anything here. Chris isn't too bright and is afraid of an evil monkey in his closet. Bart has single handedly taken out a crazed maniac in Sideshow Bob many times. Bart also has more street cred....I can't believe I just said that. The winner here is hands down Bart Simpson

Simpsons 2-Family Guy 0

Brian Griffin vs Santa's Little Helper & Snowball 1 or 2 or 3...I forget

Well, this is like the last battle, too obvious. Brian has some issues but he still has a leg up on SLH and Snowball 1,2 & 3. You could take all animals in the Simpsons and they can't compare to Brian who is way too smart to lose a battle against regular animals. Even though Brian has a drinking problem, he still has the advantage. The winner is Brian Griffin

Simpsons 2-Family Guy 1

Meg Griffin vs Lisa Simpson

Both are outcasts in their respective schools, but Lisa has something more than anyone else, smarts. Lisa is far too bright compared to Meg. Even though Meg has more brute strength, she's just no match for Lisa who can do so much. Winner here is hands down Lisa Simpson.

Simpsons 3-Family Guy 1

Maggie Simpson vs Stewie Griffin

Stewie wins....that's it.

Simpsons 3-Family Guy 2

FINAL BATTLE

Lois Griffin vs Marge Simpson

This is really tough to choose. Marge has alot going for her but Lois just has that extra something. Even thought Marge has done alot, Lois has as well. In the end, I had to split away from my original rules and went with a fight situation. With that said the winner here has to be the one who knows karate, takes the brunt of spousal abuse day in and day out and also escapes death everyday and the hands of her scheming son Stewie. The winner is...Lois Griffin.

FINAL TALLY-The Simpsons 3-Family Guy 3

So this one ends in a tie. Personally I like both of them and think both are funny and original. When a day come that The Simpsons finally go off the air, I hope Family Guy can take their place. Most hardcore fans of each don't get along, I am a hardcore Family Guy fan......or can't you tell? But I still like Simpsons, not as much as when it was first on, but still watch it from time to time. In the end.....can't we all just get along?

Hopefully this didn't stretch on too long. I know it may seem long but that's because of all the pictures really. I tried to keep everything short and sweet and I hope you enjoyed it. I also hope you don't think I took the wuss route in making the battle a tie, but that's how I see it I'm afraid. Imagine if they could get along and create a joint episode which is like those spouse switching shows and Lois goes to live with the Simpsons and Marge lives with the Griffins, that would be so funny and ****c.

Thanks for taking your time to read my blog and please comment : )

Final Fantasy XIII

We all noticed that FFXIII and FFVersusXIII were absent at E3 so I wanted to write a blog about what we know so far. So here it is ^_^

Logo :

Story
The world of XIII will have the most technologically advanced culture ever seen in a Final Fantasy game. The people in it have lived alongside magic for so long that it has become irreversably integrated into both their technology and their everyday lives.

Characters
Lightning

Described as an independent, strong-willed female hero, she wields a weapon that can transform between a gun or a sword. Character designer Tetsuya Nomura describes her as 'not very feminine', and says that he was asked to create a 'female version of Cloud' when designing her.
The bars on the shoulder of her uniform are said to indicate both rank and social status. According to information from Jump Festa in December 2006, her name is Lightning... This, however, appears to be either a nickname or codename. Her real name is currently unknown.
In addition to being a skilled fighter, she also has power over gravity and time-based magic.

???

This character is thus far a mystery. First debut at Jump Festa this new character sports a white trenchcoatsomewhat reminiscent of Seifer from FF VIII. This could potentially prove to be the actual main character or 'hero' of the game, rather than 'Lightning'.
In trailer shown at Square Enix Party he casts a spell into the air, which shimmers and dissolves into a dramatic Shiva summon. Instead of one ice goddess, this summon involves two Shivas, both of which have some crazy mechanical contraption on their backs. Once the summon is complete, a roller coaster-like maze of ice tracks form in the sky, wherein our hero hops on his futuristic-looking motorcycle (perhaps composed of the two Shivas and their mechanical bodies?) and begins blasting bad guys out of the air as he loops and jets around the newly created ice tracks.

Battle system
The battle system for Final Fantasy XIII incorperates the Active Time Battle (ATB) system seen in previous games in the series. Individual turns during battle, based on screenshots from the game, are taken by creating strings of multiple commands. Commands are selected based on their individual ATB Cost, which progressively depletes the ATB Gauge and effectively limits the number of commands that can be used in combination. These commands are then strung together into an onscreen attack pattern. Weapon exchanges can be made in the middle of battle. In the 2006 E3 trailer, we see Lightning change from gun mode to sword mode and vice versa. According to Toriyama, due to the detail done for weapons in the game, weapon transformations will be possible.
Another nifty feature in the battle system is the Overclock Gauge. This gauge will slowly charge over the span of a battle(or several battles) and once fully charged a count down timer will begin, and during this time, the character currently 'overclocked' will be able to unleash more powerful attacks and abilities. The following are phases of the overclock gauge along with non-official names for them.

Summons
Shiva

Shiva supports multiple elements(unlike in the past where she was ice exclusively). Also, Shiva has the ability to transform into a bike!

Magic
Previously known magic spells will be used such as Fire, Thunder, and Blizzard. MP(Mana/Magic Points) will be used as a source for these spells.
In this screen, you can see that the basic magic attacks are 40 mp each. You can also see in the command menu that it says 'Firaga', so the spells will go Fire->Fira->Firaga in terms of power, instead of the older system, Fire1->Fire2->Fire3.

There are also some sort of gravity attack which the character can do using devices on her fingertips. They can be used to knock opponents down using a powerful gravitational blast.

Weapons
Lightning uses a gun-blade based weapon. It is not exactly like the gun-blade used by Squall in FFVIII. Lightning's gun-blade can be flipped around(see below images) to rotate between melee and ranged attacks.

The new Tekken-Game is gonna be great.

The new Tekken-Game is gonna be great.

Please don't forget to comment, thanks and enjoy!!

Screens:

Tekken games are some of the only fighting games I've ever really liked, besides Soul Caliber and Smash Bros., and they're always phenomenal graphics wise.

Grand Theft Auto Series

I hope you like it and don't forget to comment, enjoy!!

Series overview The games allow the player to take on the role of a criminal in a big city, typically a lowly individual who rises in the ranks of organized crime over the course of the game. Various missions are set for completion by the figureheads of the city underworld, generally criminal, which must be completed to progress through the storyline. Bank robberies, assassinations and other crimes feature regularly, but occasionally taxi driving, firefighting, pimping, street racing, or learning to fly an airplane are also involved as alternate adventures, which can be done at any time during the game, with the exception of the periods performing main missions.

In later titles, notably those released after Grand Theft Auto 2, the player is given a more in depth storyline, in which they are forced to overcome an event where they are either backstabbed and left for dead by someone they know, or experienced an unfortunate event. This served as a motivation for the character to advance in the criminal ladder, and eventually leads to the triumph of the character by the end of the storyline.

The Grand Theft Auto series is notable for the large amount of freedom given to the player in deciding what to do and how to do it through different methods of transport and weapons. Unlike most action games, which are structured as a single track series of levels with linear gameplay, in GTA the player can pick and choose which missions they want to undertake, and their relationships with various powers are changed based on these choices. The vast cities of the games can also be roamed freely at any point in the game, offering many accessible buildings and minor missions. There are exceptions: Missions follow a linear, overarching plot, and some city areas must be unlocked over the course of the game.

Grand Theft Auto III and subsequent games have been notable for their storylines, high quality of voice acting, and "radio stations," which simulate driving to music with satirizing DJs, radio personalities, commercials, talk radio, popular music, and American culture. All of this is seamlessly integrated in the realistic setting of a dysfunctional urban environment which parodies a real-life city. Players also often cite the music and humor of the series in explaining its appeal.

The game's influence on teenagers and adults alike has created a "cult" scene of GTA fans that see past the merits of the game itself and appreciate the retro feel and the good-old-days vibe the game emanates. People remember or imagine the time the games are set in and can enjoy the music, the atmosphere, the fashion, the slang and the cities from their favorite decade, such as the 1980s or early 1990s.

The use of vehicles in an explorable urban environment provides a basic simulation of a working city, complete with pedestrians who obey traffic signals. Further details are used to flesh out an open-ended atmosphere that has been used in several other games, such as The Simpsons Hit & Run and the True Crime series, which have less emphasis on crime or violence. Some compare this to open-ended RPGs such as The Elder Scrolls series, and foresee action games using a similar design.

The series has courted a great deal of controversy since the release of Grand Theft Auto III. This criticism stems from the focus on illegal activities, in comparison with "hero" roles that most other games offer. The main character can commit a wide variety of crimes and violent acts while dealing with only temporary consequences, including the killing of policemen and military personnel. Opponents believe that players will try to emulate this behavior, while proponents believe it provides an emotional outlet, as such actions in real life would have serious consequences. For specific incidents, see the individual game articles.

History The original Grand Theft Auto (PC version)
Grand Theft Auto 2 (PC version)
Grand Theft Auto III, the first game in the series which immersed players in a truly 3D environmentThe Grand Theft Auto series may be divided into eras, based on the inclusion of a numbering after the recognizable title name (e.g. Grand Theft Auto III) after the original Grand Theft Auto's release, and to a certain extent, the type of graphics engine used. For further information on each title, see their respective articles.

Grand Theft Auto 1 series:

The first title in the series, Grand Theft Auto, appeared on the PC and PlayStation in 1997/1998[1] as well as a reduced Game Boy Color port, and subsequently two expansion packs were offered:
Grand Theft Auto: London, 1969 (1999), an expansion pack of the original game, set in 1969 London. Available in PS and PC boxed versions.
Grand Theft Auto: London, 1961 (1999), another expansion pack of Grand Theft Auto: London, 1969, with missions taking place in 1961 London. London, 1961 is a free PC download.

Grand Theft Auto 2 series:

Grand Theft Auto 2 for the PC, PlayStation and Dreamcast, was released in 1999. Set in the unconfirmed future,[2] it featured updated graphics and somewhat different gameplay based upon the player's appeal to various criminal organizations. A reduced Game Boy Color port was also produced.

Grand Theft Auto III series:

Grand Theft Auto III (2001), set in fictional Liberty City (based on New York City) during the release of the game (October 2001),[3] brought a third-person view to the series, rather than the traditional top-down view of earlier titles (although the view is still made available as an optional camera angle). Graphics were also updated with a new 3D game engine. While not the first of its kind, the gameplay engine had expanded the explorable world of GTA III, doing away with a traditional game structure where the player faces a "boss" at the end of the level and moves onto a new level, opting instead for more realistic mission-based approach. Multiplayer was discarded (third party mods were later released, allowing for multiplayer gameplay) but GTA III improved in many other areas such as voice-acting and storyline (before, there was speech only in short animated cut scenes between levels, other communication was simply subtitles running on the bottom of the screen). Pop culture also is cemented into GTA III, drawing many aspects and ideas from popular films and shows such as Scarface, Goodfellas, Payback", and The Sopranos.
Grand Theft Auto III sold very well and became the first blockbuster game in the series, setting the precedent for subsequent GTA titles to be very successful. GTA III also attracted heavy criticism for its violence against police and its indifference to innocent bystanders, making future games in the GTA series synonymous with violence. Following the success of GTA III, the following titles released are stand-alone sequels (though all take place before GTA III chronologically):

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002), set in 1986 in Vice City (based on Miami). Influences for the game include movies such as Scarface, Carlito's Way and the TV series Miami Vice. In fact, the entire basic storyline of the game is an homage to Scarface, including the climactic gun-fight in the main character's mansion at the end.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004), set in 1992 in the fictional state of San Andreas (based on California and Nevada, specifically Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas), inspiration comes from movies such as Boyz N the Hood and Menace II Society, and early 90s west coast gangsta rap culture and groups such as N.W.A..
San Andreas expanded on previous RPG elements, adding the ability to dress the player's character, exercise, and tattoo him. These elements also have an effect on gameplay as other characters would comment on the player character's physique or clothes. The character could also swim.
San Andreas also attracted controversy when a sex minigame that was cut from the game, but remaining in the game code, was discovered in both the console and PC versions of the game (See Hot Coffee mod). As a result, GTA: San Andreas was pulled from a number of retail outlets and was re-rated from "M" (Mature) to "AO" (Adults Only) by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB); the first game in the series to be given an AO rating. Rockstar has since released an edited version of the game for the PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 2, and has reclaimed the "M" rating.

Grand Theft Auto Advance (2004), originally intended to be a topdown conversion of GTA III for the Game Boy Advance, it ended up becoming its own completely original adventure, set roughly a year before GTA III.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (2005), a PlayStation Portable GTA III prequel set in 1998 Liberty City. A PlayStation 2 port was released by Rockstar on June 6, 2006.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (2006), the second PlayStation Portable game, was released on October 31, 2006 and set in 1984 Vice City. A PlayStation 2 port was released by Rockstar on March 6, 2007.
