It is true in the industry that it appears very difficult to make a great video game spawned from a movie, equally it seems to be just as hard to make a great movie spawned from a video game as well, lets revisit all those films we was hoping to break the mould and truly deliver something worth watching. The only way to do this would be to start back at the beginning, and trust me I have seen everyone of these ashamed as I am to say.
TRON (1982):
A movie that not many people went to see, but now has a cult status, yes Tron stars Jeff Bridges and is based on the game of the same name, yes it was camp, the effects are not very good, and it is produced by Walt Disney strangely enough but at the same time this is not a bad little film when you watch it, if it was released tday it would be a massacre but when looked in context of its release time of 1982 a good time could be had with this film, it was definately a good start to the games as an art-form cries that spread through many gamers lips these days, but unfortunately the great start was not followed up by the future crop of attempts.
Super Mario Bros. (1993):
A film that makes your wonder what Mario must have done in a past life to be stuck with a movie like this. Everybody's favourite plumber ended up with a movie that people tried to cast out and erase from there memories for many many years, but there is no hiding the fact that Super Mario Bros is a very shockingly bad movie. Millions of years ago, a meteor hits the Earth and causes time to fissure around the island of Manhattan, resulting in a cramped parallel universe where humanity has evolved from dinosaurs rather than apes. Lizard King Koopa (Dennis Hopper) runs the alternate city and has kidnapped fugitive Princess Daisy (Mathis), an orphan who was raised from an egg by nuns in our world, and who has just caught the attention of Luigi Mario (Jonh Leguizamo), younger brother and business partner of mustachioed plumber Mario Mario (Bob Hoskins). Seriously do yourself a favor, dust off a snes, put the cartridge in and roleplay the video game with a few mates and you would have a better time and a more true Mario experience than this.
Street Fighter - Mortal Kombat (both 1995):
Yes in 1995 we had a clash of two of the most iconic fighter games of last century both getting a big screen adaptation, but as we all know neither was very good. Street fighter had Jean Claude Van Damme as the american hero (slightly ironic even with the accent still intact) and his great little Cami sidekick played by the ever first choice kick-ass Kylie Minogue (bad casting anybody?) most of the iconic characters seemed to take a back seat in this movie, including Ryu and Ken only having supporting roles for the Dutch err.... i mean American kick ass military guy and the Australian err.... i mean American again love interest, seriously what was they thinking?. Mortal Kombat comes out of the issue slightly better, but still not with a truly great movie, Scorpian looks great in this and some of the characters play very well on the big screen, but the god awful techno music constantly making an appearance almost makes you perform a fatality on yourself.
Tomb Raider (2001):
Hmm, Lara Croft (tick)... Angelina Jolie playing Lara Croft (double tick) so why did this one faily to deliver on the great premise of one of Playstations most loved titles? because put simply tomb raider was inspired by the like of Indiana Jones, and you just can't breath new life into something that people have seen before without a great screenplay or characters that the audience cares about, sure Angelina Jolie gives it a very good go in the lead role and came out of this film as every fanboys wet dream. With a little more time and effort put in to the story this could have been the one to truly break the mould, the sequel pushed it beyond saving, but the true responsability for nowadays rush of video games to movie's was created by the success of....
Resident Evil (2002):

Resident Evil, the low budget zombie film that made a killing at the box office and leader of the new wave of game adaptations. All it had to do was set up in a mansion and let the zombie's do the rest of the talking for the movie; but no Paul Anderson had other plans - lets wipe out half the cast by a lazer show then leave the rest up to the zombies's... WHAT THE HELL!. Bringing in none of the iconic characters (except for the licker) was also a bad choice and this movie just never really picked up. It was an OK film i will admit, if it did not have the name of Resident Evil on it, i think we would have stomached it a bit better. But as it is all that can be said is that it only got worse through the sequels :( God i would love to be given the shot to revamp it all and bring it back to what it should be, but while it keeps on making money as it is, that day will never come.
I will continue this blog tomorrow as i suddenly realise that i am very sleepy and need some rest lol, thanks for reading so far!
