Xbox 360 HD player cut to $179

Microsoft drops price of high-def movie device by $20 beginning August 1, announces five-film giveaway.

Though Comic-Con traditionally caters to those of the passive visual media persuasion, many gaming companies have been using the venue to cross-promote their comic/movie/TV show-to-game tie-ins. As part of this year's show, Microsoft appealed to its film-watching Xbox 360 user base by announcing it would be dropping the price of its external Xbox 360 HD-DVD player from $199 to $179 beginning August 1. The new $179 price tag brings the US player's price in line with the Japanese HD-DVD accessory, which debuted at around $177 last November.

In addition to cutting the price, Microsoft announced it would be extending Toshiba's current HD-DVD giveaway promotion to include the Xbox 360 player. Those who purchase the Xbox 360 add-on between August 1 and September 30 can choose five free HD-DVD movies from a selection of 15. Sony is currently running a similar promotion with the purchase of any qualifying Blu-ray player, including the PlayStation 3.

Microsoft also expanded on yesterday's announcement concerning Legendary Pictures' gruesomely stylized 300. Beginning August 14, the Spartan soldiers' stand at Thermopylae will be downloadable in HD through Xbox Live Marketplace. No price was given for the movie rental. Also, in advance of the Heroes: Season 1 HD-DVD boxed set, Xbox Live users will be able to download for free the show's pilot episode for a limited time.

The selection of free HD-DVD titles is listed below:

Apollo 13
Casablanca
Four Brothers
The Rundown
U-571
Seabiscuit
Constantine
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Blazing Saddles
The Perfect Storm
The Chronicles of Riddick
Dukes of Hazzard
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
U2: Rattle and Hum
We Were Soldiers

I have got to get this! Heroes will only be on Hd-dvd!! And 300 looks like a treat as well. Over $100 in free movies is not a bad deal.

legandary_ACE : It's not a ripoff if you just want a game console, which is all I wanted when I decided on the 360 over the PS3. Sony forces you to pay extra for a Blu-Ray player, even if you don't want or need one. M$ at least gives you the option. And I take a bit of issue with your math, since only the discontinued PS3 is $500. In a few months, all PS3's will likely be $600, unless Sony finally does the right thing and permanently lowers the price.

Yuck_Too said: "HD DVD Claims 3:1 Lead Over Blu-ray In Europe << LINK REMOVED >>" It's 2:1 for Blu-ray here. Not to mention the fact that the above study did NOT include Blu-ray sales via PS3. Sort of misleading to skip the PS3, which has done so well in Europe. A Blu-ray player is a Blu-ray player, game system or not.

Honestly it really looks like HD-DVD is going to be the one to bite it, but their free selection is better than Blu-Ray's. That is, unless they have a tiered system like the Blu-Ray giveaway BS...

Sweet! Maybe this time if I get a job I can get the HD-DVD attachment thing. Lot of good movies in that list. Oh crap I need an HDTV if I am going to get an HD-DVD attachment.

I think "We Were Soldiers" in HD and surround sound would be a good call too.

One thing is for sure, of the 11.6 million Xbox

I wish one of the formats would hurry up and die so I will know what player to buy. Come on formats, learn to be like the laserdisc!

Hmm. Sky Captain would be awesome in HD, as would The Rundown. Constantine, The Perfect Storm, and Tomb Raider would make watchable choices too - I'd go with Blazing Saddles but I can't think of a movie that deserves HD less (other than Monty Python and the Holy Grail, maybe). The rest are a delicious assortment of utter garbage. Why not offer Pitch Black in place of Riddick? The sequel was crap. And The Dukes of Hazzard...god. Why not throw in Little Man while they're at it?

--encodi -- "i would wait 1 year at least to see what's the new default player for homemovies, hd-dvd or blu" ~~~~~~~~~ 18 months from now we'll all be buying combo players that play both and it won't matter. Just like the 8-versions of DVD we have on the market now that no ones cares about.

Chronicles of Riddick seems like the only decent choice. I'd probably give We Were Soldiers a viewing too.

latinchemist, its most likely that it will never be, since its being remade. Anyway, this wont help the format in any way, it barely got any support at all from studios.

Besides Constantine, Blazing Saddles and the Perfect Storm, that's the worst collection of movies i've ever seen.

Well I certainly like the selection of movies better than what Sony had with their giveaway... but its still too soon to see if they'll both survive.

I'm dying to get an HD-DVD player and this extension at $179 is just a bit overpriced for me. I really would love to have one in time for Hot Fuzz next Tuesday (Shaun of the Dead comes out on HD then as well), but I don't expect it to happen. Looks like I'll be waiting even longer.

If I were MS, I wouldn't be worrying about HD-DVD. But since it's an option and I can choose whether or not I want to add it and not automatically including it to make the console more expensive, I guess it makes a little sense.
