Xbox 360 HD player cut to $179

Microsoft drops price of high-def movie device by $20 beginning August 1, announces five-film giveaway.

Though Comic-Con traditionally caters to those of the passive visual media persuasion, many gaming companies have been using the venue to cross-promote their comic/movie/TV show-to-game tie-ins. As part of this year's show, Microsoft appealed to its film-watching Xbox 360 user base by announcing it would be dropping the price of its external Xbox 360 HD-DVD player from $199 to $179 beginning August 1. The new $179 price tag brings the US player's price in line with the Japanese HD-DVD accessory, which debuted at around $177 last November.

In addition to cutting the price, Microsoft announced it would be extending Toshiba's current HD-DVD giveaway promotion to include the Xbox 360 player. Those who purchase the Xbox 360 add-on between August 1 and September 30 can choose five free HD-DVD movies from a selection of 15. Sony is currently running a similar promotion with the purchase of any qualifying Blu-ray player, including the PlayStation 3.

Microsoft also expanded on yesterday's announcement concerning Legendary Pictures' gruesomely stylized 300. Beginning August 14, the Spartan soldiers' stand at Thermopylae will be downloadable in HD through Xbox Live Marketplace. No price was given for the movie rental. Also, in advance of the Heroes: Season 1 HD-DVD boxed set, Xbox Live users will be able to download for free the show's pilot episode for a limited time.

The selection of free HD-DVD titles is listed below:

Apollo 13
Casablanca
Four Brothers
The Rundown
U-571
Seabiscuit
Constantine
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Blazing Saddles
The Perfect Storm
The Chronicles of Riddick
Dukes of Hazzard
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
U2: Rattle and Hum
We Were Soldiers

Just like PS2 pushed the DVD format PS3 is pushing the Blu-Ray format passed HD-DVD. Watcher you have to take into account that the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player and the main reason Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD. After the bullsh*%t price drop Sony sales of the PS3 went by 147%. so what if that means only 56 PS3's sold this month its still pushing the Blu-Ray format. :0)

HD Players are selling moreso, go to any Best Buy, Circuit City and ask them what sells more, they will answer HD. I like Blu-Ray, but no one is buying them. Thats in response to soruoush's stupid comment btw.

180 is nice, but the 5 movies do nothing for me (as I'm not intrested in the selection) and still don't have any HAVE TO reason to upgrade to either HD or Blu-ray PS - PE is 66 from amazon

Lets not forget ladies. No elite no true HD (1080P). Without an HDMI cable you dont get true HD. I have all three consoles. 360 gaming (for now atleast) until PS3 launches a few good games which hopefully is soon. They have a long way to go to catch up to the awesome games 360 has. PS3 Blu-Ray movies (Off the hook) and came with HDMI inputs and I didnt have to buy any add-ons such as wireless adapter or HD-DVD. WiFi and Blu-Ray built in and capable of true 1080P out of the box. Truthfully Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD at a minimum of 2-1 all over the place. As it should. More data storage=more features and less discs. Oh yeah and my Wii to play games I love that came out two years ago but have different controls.

--decoy1978 -- I don't think anyone where will argue the PS3 is a good deal for a blu-ray player.

The difference is for 11.6 million 360 owners if they don't already have a HD player $180 gets them one with 5 movies.

Hey Ima_Grey, it does upscale dvds, you just have to have the elite for the hdmi or buy the vga cable, but it does work.

OOOhhhh.....cool! I'm gonna get the 360 as my first foray into next gen basically because I'm poor but I can upgrade its accessories and peripherals. An HD-DVD add was on my list but now its cheaper AND comes with 5 movies, albeit marginally desirable ones, I'll definitely try to get it before 9/30. All in all a very nice developement! Dude, get a PS3 if you are planning on buying an HD DVD drive. It comes with blu-ray and wifi not to mention HDMI. To get that on 360 would be elite($479) + HD DVD ($179) + wifi ($100) = $760. Even at the cheapest, getting a core with HD DVD will run you $480. PS3=$499...no brainer to me unless you don't like any games coming on the console.

Hey Legendary Ace if your going to compare the cheaper price cut PS3 as a basis of comparing the two systems, you should play fair and use the 360's $299 system as well. As it stands for me: PS3 is $599.99 (80GB) 360 is $479.99 (ELITE) + $179.99 (HD-DVD) = 659.98 I could be wrong with these numbers and if I am I hope someone corrects me.

Yuck_Too. I stand corrected, I've seen it on Comcast HD, and I'd love to own Planet Earth, but not for what they want for it, not right now. It's on my list of ridiculously priced Hd-Dvds. To everyone, Planet Earth series...reason to get HD anything.

"Ima_Grey I would think of getting this if it upscaled regular DVDs to 720p or 1080i. As it is, it plays regular DVDs in 480p like the XBOX 360." It does upscale, just not through component cables. The xbox 360 upscales as well, just not through component cables. People are so mis-informed about the xbox 360...

Ima_Grey says: "I would think of getting this if it upscaled regular DVDs to 720p or 1080i. As it is, it plays regular DVDs in 480p like the XBOX 360." You are an idiot. 720p is HD. Of course it can't upscale regular DVD's to HD bonehead. And that's the whole point of buying an HD-DVD player. If you don't want movies in HD, then don't buy it. RETARD

I struggle to find 5 movies I want from the list. If the drive were about $100 and the movies were better quality, (just give me 300 and Heroes: Season1!) I'd buy it. I'll just continue enjoying blu-ray and relegate the 360 to gaming.

Toshiba has been offering the 5 free HD-DVD movies all summer long...before the Blu Ray give-away. So MS is not imitating anyone...its the other way around. The HD player is a nice add-on that works really well and is a nice value.

That's good news. I LOVE my 360 hd player, and I got it for $180...with trade-in credit the day it came out. I implore everyone to take advantage of the king kong AND 5 dvd offer while it lasts. I only hope they consider extending the offer retro-actively. The player has not been out for that long. Anyways...its a good player and I'm living in HD now, not years from now when the war ends. $180 is an amount I'm willing to gamble with, as well as the software cost. PS. Charlie and the Chocolate factory HD-Dvd, the best presentation piece for your HD player in my opinion. Notably, the Willy Wonka song and Edible room scenes, both vibrant and colorful.

well i still don't think it changes much but hd-dvd did actually make quite a bit of profit in the past months. blu-ray was leading hd-dvd 2:1 but after toshiba's extended sale, marketing campaign and the likes of the matrix trilogy they got going for it it's actually came back a little closer. the latest numbers show blu-ray still has the lead, but it's now 1.56:1 as of july 15th (DVDFile as a source). again, not a huge deal - but considering it's actually climbing back i wouldn't say this war is over yet.
