Xbox 360 HD player cut to $179

Microsoft drops price of high-def movie device by $20 beginning August 1, announces five-film giveaway.

Though Comic-Con traditionally caters to those of the passive visual media persuasion, many gaming companies have been using the venue to cross-promote their comic/movie/TV show-to-game tie-ins. As part of this year's show, Microsoft appealed to its film-watching Xbox 360 user base by announcing it would be dropping the price of its external Xbox 360 HD-DVD player from $199 to $179 beginning August 1. The new $179 price tag brings the US player's price in line with the Japanese HD-DVD accessory, which debuted at around $177 last November.

In addition to cutting the price, Microsoft announced it would be extending Toshiba's current HD-DVD giveaway promotion to include the Xbox 360 player. Those who purchase the Xbox 360 add-on between August 1 and September 30 can choose five free HD-DVD movies from a selection of 15. Sony is currently running a similar promotion with the purchase of any qualifying Blu-ray player, including the PlayStation 3.

Microsoft also expanded on yesterday's announcement concerning Legendary Pictures' gruesomely stylized 300. Beginning August 14, the Spartan soldiers' stand at Thermopylae will be downloadable in HD through Xbox Live Marketplace. No price was given for the movie rental. Also, in advance of the Heroes: Season 1 HD-DVD boxed set, Xbox Live users will be able to download for free the show's pilot episode for a limited time.

The selection of free HD-DVD titles is listed below:

Apollo 13
Casablanca
Four Brothers
The Rundown
U-571
Seabiscuit
Constantine
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Blazing Saddles
The Perfect Storm
The Chronicles of Riddick
Dukes of Hazzard
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
U2: Rattle and Hum
We Were Soldiers

@AstroTravellin Fox and Disney titles may be released on HD DVD in Europe because sometimes different Studios distribute films in different regions. Like Universal released Cinderella Man exclusively on HD DVD in the U.S., but Disney released in on Blu-Ray only everywhere else. And studios choose based on the tech specs. which format they want to choose, Disney and Fox want more space whichis whythey want Blu_Ray to win. Universal only cares about internetconnectivity which is why they only support HD DVD. After Sony makes internet connectivity mandatory on their players, Universal will go multi-platform or Blu-Ray only.

This carries the stench of doom, if you ask me. Nonetheless, throw Departed and Goodfellas on there and you've got a deal... the only movie in the entire list worth watching is Blazing Saddles IMO, though I know my gf would hound me for Casablanca or some such nonsense.

I'm getting it definitely, hopefully they will come out with the Elite Black version because I have the Elite and would like matching colors, oh and I do think that HD-DVD is better than blu-ray.

Wow, it must really be something irritating for you haters to make a concious effort to piss on people's parade. ------------------------------------------ lol tell that to the 360 fanboys when a ps3 article comes up. How was a $100 price cut on ps3 a bad thing too? yet 360 fan boys were like hungry mutants at the article.

Soon to be free, hell, they'll probably pay you to take one off their hands. Less embarrassment for the failure of the format.

Ive been meaning to pick up the hd-dvd add-on, and this movie give-away will mean i will buy one before the deadline. it's a bit annoying having 2 formats i was going to wait till one one but thought whats the point i always buy every console so i might aswell buy this then i will have an hd-dvd player(360) and a blu-ray player(ps3) and i wont have to worry about films like 300 being on hd-dvd. Also i like the line up, i would pick 5 films that i would like to see in HD like: Constantine The Perfect Storm The Chronicles of Riddick Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow All these films have great special effect's and would look awesome in HD, granted sky captain is supposed to be crap but i enjoyed the other 3 films and riddick should look amazing in HD i will probably get apollo 13 or four brothers also. But im probably getting ahead of myself as i doubt this offer will come to the U.K.

Don't get caught up in the hype of this so-called "format war," folks. Neither format is going away for a long, long time, not as long as billion dollar companies like Microsoft and friends savor the taste and smell of green. This is not VHS vs. Beta. The reason VHS won was because of the affordability. Beta was clearly better in terms of quality, but its price tag made it DOA. Can you honestly say you know why Blu Ray is better than HD-DVD or vice/versa? I know this is hard to admit, but competing media formats can and will co-exist.

cool i guess if i did not already own stand alone blueray and hd dvd players... i try to never use my ps3 as a blueray player. not only was the quality not as good on the ps3 but playing dvds killed so many ps2s i fear my ps3 breaking for the same reason.

Since xbox fanboys cant seem to grasp the fact that PS3 is having an impact on Bluray's success I'll try to put it in a way they can understand. When the 360 came out a HELL of a lot of people bought an HDTV to go with it. Most people had no reason to get an HDTV because all the other HD content was garbage (you were limited to football and nature scenes and had to pay out the ass for it, hd digital cable was and pretty much still is completely pointless), the 360 finally gave people a reason to pick up an HDTV and the sales were affected in a big way. I cant imagine how any xbox fanboy could forget the surge in demand for HDTV's when the 360 came out, especially since Im sure they experienced the huge amount of ads and pressure to get an HDTV with their 360. So you need to ask yourself if the 360 was able to affect HDTV sales then why in gods name cant the PS3 affect bluray movie sales? Game consoles have ALWAYS affected things like that, gaming is mainstream and a multi billion dollar industry, theres no possible way that it cant affect the things related to it like tvs, wireless routers, cables, dvd, bluray, etc.

"Oh and I bet most of you guys didn't know Cinderella Man was on Blu-ray in Japan. Cinderella Man > Universal Movie!!! Universal movie's are suppose to be HD-DVD exclusives. Apparently not all of them. Flip-flop HD-DVD. Name sounds ugly imho!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm just doing my research guys!!! Thank you, Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" A lot of Disney and Fox titles are available on HD DVD in Europe. Aren't they supposed to be Blu Ray exclusive? Studio exclusivity isn't really going to decide which is the better format or what the people really want. If this was a real format war, all movies would be available on both formats and the people would decide which format to support. In Europe, there are currently anti-trust investigations going on as to how exclusivity deals were negotiated. you can read more about it at the URL at the bottom of this post. All the studio support means now is that Sony has deeper pockets than Toshiba, not which format is better. I own both formats and prefer HD DVD. The film transfers are better and the extra/interactive features are leaps and bounds better than Blu-ray. << LINK REMOVED >>

Not much better movie choices than the Blu-ray promo either. Microsoft is going to have to do a lot more that a $20 buck price break to save HD-DVD. Should have been $50 off at least, if not $100 and it still probably will not help anyway so I guess its futile.

" Enzo_gt " HD-DVD is totally dead. Just the name alone is so dumb to say. If you say it fast it sounds like HG-DVD and it doesn't sound futuristic. Blu-ray is a futuristic name and it has less syllables. Blu-Ray is being purchased in September by myself =PS3 _________________________________________________________ I gotta agree with you on the name thing. HD-DVD is just too much to say. Blu-ray is less to say and it sounds better. I don't think many of us want to say 5 letters. It takes forever. But I can already see Universal Studios wanting to change their minds on the format. I hope they know most good titles are on Blu-ray and more and more studio support is following right by their site. Plus Blu-ray holds more by default. HD-DVD should just give up on their triple layer discs already. LOL. Plus who wants to see Spider-Man on Blu-ray? Hahaa. Sorry HD-DUD!!!!! Oh and I bet most of you guys didn't know Cinderella Man was on Blu-ray in Japan. Cinderella Man > Universal Movie!!! Universal movie's are suppose to be HD-DVD exclusives. Apparently not all of them. Flip-flop HD-DVD. Name sounds ugly imho!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm just doing my research guys!!! Thank you, Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, price cuts are always good, I suppose, but I still thin kits a bit of a rip off when you put it in perspective. A premium xbox and the drive cost 479 together which is fine and dandy. I defenitely don't want to turn this into a console war comment, but I can get a ps3 for just 20 bucks more, also get 5 free movies, and Blu-ray games. The biggest difference, I guess is that blu-ray is, at the moment, the safe format to go with because of its dominance so far.

stan_gable are you seriouse... you must be blind if you havn't noticed blu-ray is beating hd-dvd, and your saying consumers havn't choosen either, what about that blockbuster thing "more then 70% of there rentals bettween blu-ray and hd-dvd were blu-ray" not to mention a bunch of thefts broke into a store and stole all the blu-ray titles they had and left all teh hd-dvd one on the selves (i think thats just funny)

Look at the pattern of studio support: Apollo 13 - Universal Casablanca - Warner Four Brothers - Paramount The Rundown - Universal U-571 - Universal Seabiscuit - Universal Constantine - Warner Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - Paramount Blazing Saddles - Warner The Perfect Storm - Warner The Chronicles of Riddick - Universal Dukes of Hazzard - Warner Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - Paramount U2: Rattle and Hum - Paramount We Were Soldiers - Paramount Same three studios....that ain't much...

HD DVD is going to lose because it has no good movies that you can't get on Blu-Ray. Plus PS3 sales are picking up which increases the chances of Blu-Ray winning. Plus you can only get movies from Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, and Disney on Blu-Ray!

whats the point of buying either one. DVD's are still better. instead of working on better this format for movies and such they should be trying to create a small mass storage device, kinda like a DNA based one that i heard is being developed somewhere in Asia.

So when are they gonna drop the price of the 360? $299+$179=$478. Most HD-DVD players are dropping down in price. Toshiba recently released a HD-DVD player that costs $300 and it comes with HDMI.

Five free HD-DVD's seems like a hell of a deal. Though I really don't see a reason to upgrade to HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Seeing as how I don't own an HD TV nor really care about picture clarity (don't get me wrong, it'd be really nice but it's not something I really, really want). I'm fine with normal DVD's myself.
