This Week in Games: June 23, 2012

Nintendo is confusing people, Sony is evasive, and Microsoft is changing what "Xbox" means. Meanwhile, Electronic Arts just wants to sell you stuff. Also, there's a Need for Speed movie coming.

Nintendo has been in the news in a big way this week, both with Wii U-related information and with announcements that seem oddly timed given that E3 was only a couple of weeks ago.

One of the challenges Nintendo faces with the Wii U is simply getting people to understand what the system actually is. Plenty of people think it's an expensive add-on for the existing Wii, or that it's just the controller and not a whole new system. Nintendo of America vice president of sales and marketing Scott Moffitt told us at E3 earlier this month that the messaging of the Wii U is "confusing" compared to that of the Wii. He also addressed a handful of other concerns about the system, from its power relative to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, to third-party support, practices to thwart used game sales, ease of connecting with friends online, appealing to the core market, and more. When asked about the system's specifications, Moffitt deftly dodged the question, responding, "Unfortunately I have to give you the bad answer. It just comes back to a company philosophy that we believe the experiences and the gameplay are more important than facts and figures." Especially if those "facts and figures" don't show the system in a great light, we're guessing. "Once the system is available no doubt people will reverse engineer it and take it apart and that info will become known," he continued. "Our focus is to talk about what it can do for gameplay and how it can revolutionize entertainment, rather than focus on tech specs."

"Do we want to reach out to the core audience? Absolutely," he continued. "They're very much part of our audience and the group of consumers we hope will find the way you can reimagine games on the Wii U. The Wii U could become the preferred way to play those games for some of the core gamers. You can imagine how a game like Call of Duty would work on the Wii U--the GamePad will allow you to declutter the TV and pull gaming items like maps down and not interrupt your interaction and enjoy the cinematic quality of the game on the TV. That's one application that could be exciting and could enhance gameplay for a core gamer."

What do you think? Are you sold on the idea? Do you think Nintendo is truly committed to the core gaming space?

"Sometimes I get worried about the continued reliance on making games that are so centered around guns, and that there are so many of these games." - Shigeru Miyamoto

Unfortunately for Nintendo, not everyone sees it that way. According to a Gamasutra article, Take-Two Interactive is in no rush to bring its core franchises to Nintendo's new console. CEO Strauss Zelnick told the publication the company has not announced anything about moving the company's mature titles onto the Wii U, saying he's skeptical about the console. What's he really saying? "No Grand Theft Auto V on Wii U," that's what.

There's some contradiction within the ranks at Nintendo too, if you consider that the majority of shooters that were shown at E3 are targeting the "core" that Moffitt described. Nintendo's own Shigeru Miyamoto told IGN this week that he's concerned about the ubiquity of weapons-based games. "Sometimes I get worried about the continued reliance on making games that are so centered around guns, and that there are so many of these games," he said. "I have a hard time imagining--particularly for young generations of gamers--how they sit down and play and interact with that."

Regardless of the ultimate focus of the system, we do know that we'll see it this year. Nintendo has yet to announce a specific price or date, but it's likely to be early November to capitalize on the post-Thanksgiving holiday rush, and at a Wii-like $250 or $299 price point. That said, Amazon Germany caused a stir this week when it listed the console with a December 21 release date for EUR 399.99, which is about $500. Do you believe they're close to the mark? We don't.

While we may not know when the Wii U is hitting, or for how much, we do know that there's a new 3DS hitting this year. Predictably dubbed the 3DS XL, the 46 percent larger supersized handheld was announced this past Thursday. Why this wasn't shown at E3 a couple of weeks ago is anyone's guess. Nintendo seems to be on a huge "have as many mini events as the audience will tolerate" kick lately. The 3DS XL will be released in Japan and Europe on July 28 this year in white, red and black, and silver and black versions. The North American version will be out on August 19 and will come in blue and red. Why no slinky white 3DS XL in the US? Who the hell knows. Add it to the list of no-brainer questions about the device that include "Why didn't they include the second analog stick this time?" Players will pay 18,900 yen ($235) for the device in Japan; North American gamers will pay $199.99. No Euro or UK prices yet.

Nintendo also announced that both the Wii U and 3DS versions of the upcoming Super Smash Bros. sequel will be developed by Namco Bandai Games. While Kid Icarus: Uprising developer Masahiro Sakurai will be helming the project, Namco Bandai producer Masaya Kobayashi (Ridge Racer series) and director Yoshito Higuchi (Tales series) will be involved as producer and director, respectively. For a look at what they may come up with, check this out.

OK, that's more than enough Nintendo talk. Let's tackle some next-generation moves from the other guys…

Next-Generation Talk: Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4

Id Software boss John Carmack can be added to the list of designers who are not particularly enthused over the prospect of next-generation hardware. Speaking to Games Industry International, Carmack said Microsoft and Sony are too focused on boosting technical power, when they should instead be working on building new experiences for future consoles. "Sony and Microsoft are going to fight over gigaflops and teraflops and GPUs and all this. In the end, it won't make that much difference," he said. "When you get to this, it makes a really big difference in the experience. Nintendo went and brought motion into the gaming sphere and while only having a tenth of the processing power was able to outsell all of them in all of these ways. I think someone has an opportunity to do this here. It takes a whole ecosystem though, but it is almost perfect."

"Nintendo went and brought motion into the gaming sphere and while only having a tenth of the processing power was able to outsell all of them in all of these ways. I think someone has an opportunity to do this here." - John Carmack, id Software

Despite some suggestions that Sony would show new hardware during its 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing earlier this month, the company did not utter a word about the PlayStation 4. Explaining the console's absence from the show and Sony's wider thoughts about new hardware to MCV, PlayStation CEO Andrew House said gamers should not expect talk of the PS4 until major advances over the PlayStation 3 can be shown. "The right time to talk about new advances in hardware is when you can demonstrate a significant leap on the current experience, and something that is going to be attractive," he said. "That remains our philosophy. Beyond that we have nothing to say at this point."

This statement from House came around the same time that the Internet was aflutter with news of a purported internal Microsoft document from 2010 that was posted to Scribd (it has since been taken down at the request of Microsoft's lawyers, Covington & Burling), which outlined the tech giant's product roadmap for the Xbox brand. The 56-page document indicated that "Xbox 720" will launch in 2013 at $299 with an updated version of the Kinect, dubbed "Kinect V2." According to the document, this new camera tech will support four-player full-body tracking and allow gamers to sit down while playing. On top of this, "Kinect V2" will be able to adapt to players' living rooms, meaning they will not need to move furniture for an optimal experience. In addition, the document indicated that the new Xbox will boast a Blu-ray optical drive and promises "4x-6x" greater power over the Xbox 360. Speculation from earlier this year pointed to a new Xbox boasting a Blu-ray drive, as well as functionality that would curb used games. No mention was made in the document concerning the possibility of the console blocking, or in any way inhibiting, secondhand titles. The document also claims Microsoft is planning to add support for augmented-reality glasses for the new Xbox. This endeavor will be called "Fortaleza" and is planned to launch sometime in 2014. The glasses will reportedly run on Wi-Fi and 4G connections.

A Glimpse of the Future? Microsoft Surface and EA's Microtransactions

While the "Xbox 720" (surely not its real name) is still essentially a thing of myth and speculation, with or without documentation that may or may not be legitimate, we did get a much more significant piece of insight into Microsoft's thinking this week in the shape of the Surface announcement on Monday. This new line of tablets, positioned to take on Apple's iPad, serves not only as a demonstration of Microsoft's pervasive, cross-platform strategy for Windows 8, but also as a glimpse at how the company views the Xbox brand. We saw a little of this at E3 with the announcement of Xbox Music, but it's clear now that "Xbox" no longer means "console" at Microsoft. Instead it means "entertainment," and the term will be used across all of its devices--mobile, tablet, desktop, and anything else they come up with.

The first two Surface models unveiled include a Windows RT (RT = RunTime, the stripped-down OS within the Windows 8 suite) edition powered by an Nvidia ARM processor, and an Intel Core processor-driven Windows 8 Pro unit. Both Surface tablets feature a 10.6-inch "HD display" with Corning Gorilla Glass 2.0, as well as a full-size USB port, microSD card port, and multiple configurations of system RAM. Microsoft is also touting built-in kickstands for the Surface tablets, as well as screen covers with built-in keyboards. The cover combos will come in two varieties: the Touch Cover will provide a 3mm-thin gesture-sensing keyboard for typing, while the 5mm-thin Type Cover offers moving keys for those who prefer a standard keyboard feel.

No Caption Provided

Interestingly, the Surface could be an early view at something much larger for the Xbox brand. Back in January, we reported on rumors that there would be a tablet component to future iterations of the Xbox hardware. "Given Microsoft's recent efforts at unification across its Windows, Mobile, and Xbox product lines, it seems clear that the 720 or whatever they end up calling it (surely not that) will be the ultimate personification of that strategy," we said. "There are strong signs suggesting that, like with Nintendo's Wii U, a tablet component figures heavily into the new design. That saucy Windows 8 Metro interface (now also seen on the Xbox Dashboard) just begs to be touched. Speculation as to the form it will take has been rife for the past few months, with some even suggesting that the core of the new platform will be akin to a tablet PC that wirelessly connects to a base station, which in turn plugs into your TV. If this is the case, a premium Xbox Next setup could feasibly include a base station, a tablet, a conventional controller of some kind, and the recently discussed high-def evolution of the Kinect."

Hmmm…is Surface an initial taste of this? An appetizer for next year's announcements? What do you think? Could we be seeing the beginnings of a new approach to the whole entertainment space, including games, from Microsoft?

"I think there's an inevitability that happens five years from now, 10 years from now, that, let's call it the client, to use the term, [is free]. It is no different than…it's free to me to walk into The Gap in my local shopping mall." - Peter More, Electronic Arts

Sticking with the futurism theme of this section this week, we got a glimpse of Electronic Arts' vision of the future this week--namely that in five to 10 years, all games will support microtransactions. Speaking to Kotaku, EA COO Peter Moore explained that this business model is similar to real-world retail outlets, like the clothing chain The Gap. "I think, ultimately, those microtransactions will be in every game, but the game itself or the access to the game will be free," he said. "I think there's an inevitability that happens five years from now, 10 years from now, that, let's call it the client, to use the term, [is free]. It is no different than…it's free to me to walk into The Gap in my local shopping mall. They don't charge me to walk in there. I can walk into The Gap, enjoy the music, look at the jeans and what have you, but if I want to buy something I have to pay for it."

Predictably, this drew the ire of…well, just about everyone. Our story had over a thousand comments, many of them objecting to Electronic Arts' approach and seeing it as further proof that the company is out of touch with its audience. This in turn raises the question: Are the folks at EA even aware of the disdain they inspire anymore?

Speaking of EA drawing ire, we'll all have a new Mass Effect 3 ending to complain about next Tuesday. On Friday, BioWare announced that Mass Effect 3 Extended Cut will be released for free on June 26. The Extended Cut will add more cutscenes and content to the game's epilogue, and BioWare has said that the additional scenes will "include deeper insight to Commander Shepard's journey based on player choices during the war against the Reapers."

Let's End on Something Light: A Need for Speed Flick

The screenplay is based on the Need for Speed series but is not based on an individual game, because clearly the wealth of narrative in the Need for Speed universe is just too much to choose from.

After all that future-gazing, let's end on something light. DreamWorks Studios has acquired the feature film rights to EA’s popular video game franchise, Need for Speed, it was announced jointly on Friday by DreamWorks CEO and co-chair Stacey Snider and EA president of studios Frank Gibeau. Brothers George and John Gatins developed the original story, with George writing the feature’s screenplay. The screenplay is based on the Need for Speed series but is not based on an individual game, because clearly the wealth of narrative in the Need for Speed universe is just too much to choose from. EA will produce along with John Gatins and Mark Sourian. Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) is attached to direct, and the project will be fast-tracked at DreamWorks with a target production start date of early next year, for a 2014 release.

So…predictions please! Will we get something along the lines of the crappy storyline in the likes of Need for Speed Carbon or Need for Speed: The Run? Or will we get a The Fast and The Furious type of thing? Let us know what you're expecting in the comments.

The thing I don't really get with Nintendo right now, is their sudden fascination with their new outlook on games. I remember a time when I would go to a friends house to play Killer Instinct. I remember a time when I would pop in Doom into my SNES and watch imps explode by rockets. I remember a day when you could play Mario one second, than the next pop in Mortal Kombat III. The Wii for the longest time was more of a walk in the park. Well, a walk in the park if you had a Wii remote for a hand. I just feel like Nintendo didn't really have to try and event something new. They just had to go back to their roots, which I didn't find in the GameCube at all. I would blame the Gamecube's lack of sells more so on it's limiting discs. They were so tiny that a lot of bigger games just couldn't be ported to it. Things like Dragon Ball Z budokai 3 to name one. I won't lie, I kind of still want a WiiU. I have a Wii, just don't play it. Just saying, Nintendo, go back to playing with power.

@Atheno I just think you bought the wrong games for your nintendo consoles, because I don't know any game that was as big as Zelda: The wind Waker, on either Xbox or Ps2. Nintendo exclusive games have allways been great, unlike their third party titles. But offcourse this is something that will change with the WiiU, because the WiiU will be able to run games like Battlefield3 just fine. That wouldn't be the reason for me to buy a WiiU though. I prefer playing shooters on a PC anyway (greater experience). I just really looking forward to chill out with a couple of friends at home playing mario kart or Super smash brothers. Or play a great game like zelda or mario :)! And this time in a smooth looking 1080p!

@Atheno But power sacrifices Money, thus higher price point. They were on a ideology that they can create an alternate experience with cheaper cost, but advances parallel with the other competitions. I don't know though. They said that the Wii U is powerful enough for the next-gen, but we'll see.

@luqmanr True, as in graphics. I mostly mean playing with power as in bringing back a balance of mature and kid friendly games. Putting the power back into the players and not forcing gimmicks on everyone. Support a better online system because a lot of people (not everyone) but a lot of people want that. So on so on.

@Atheno Oh, I though you meant graphics, because old Nintendo consoles are quite powerful for their time.

I don't think Nintendo's pushing any gimmick though. It's always up to the developers whether to take advantage of them or not. Reggie said so himself

@luqmanr actually the guys from Crytek said recently that the WiiU is running the Crytek Engine 3, and it is at a minimum as powerful as the XBox360.

@Atheno and you are right, not every game is in need of the HD makeover, or have the ultra-realistic graphics..... saying that it is unfortunately that Nintendo is pushing this feature on the new console, since gamers, developers and media (in general) did a wonderful job of highlighting how inferior the Wii was in every single aspect..... in the end it should be all about how much did people enjoy the game, and not how much power the console has.

I think mainly people were (and still are) a bit unfair towards Nintendo (and other companies as well) from trying to do their own thing away from what the competition was doing.

@hitman047m4 The one thing for me though, is that a Mario game doesn't need to be as graphical as Crysis 3. I would be perfectly happy with a PS3 graphical Mario game supporting higher resolution and smooth graphics. So with that said, I think the WiiU has the potential to be more of a system than Wii.

Why didn't they just put a second analog on that 3DS. A price point slightly below PS Vita would've been justice IMO if it had a second analog.

@luqmanr This is just common sense, but I do believe that if Nintendo design the 3DSXL with a second analog circle pad/joystick, the actual functionality/design of the DS system will be completely useless.

@hitman047m4 Then why did Nintendo release an add-on? So that people can have the choice whether they want a second analog or not? I think, having it on the system is nice, even if it would be rendered useless by most gamers. But that's just me.

@luqmanr I do know what you are saying, but the add-on release was to please certain game mechanics for certain games that demanded different style of controls.... as well not all games need the second touch screen or the extra joystick.

For example, I own both R.E. Revelations and M.G.S. Snake Eater 3D. Only in the R.E.R. the game control was implemented properly (my opinion) with the limited setting/design of the 3DS. I bought the Circle Pad Pro for both games to enhance or have a different style of control, and I am quite happy with the add-on support.

I know that Monster Hunter Tri G also supports the add on but I have not played that game so I do not know how it is being used.

On the other hand, I own Kid Icarus, but I do feel that they completely implemented the extra pad support the wrong way, making it completely useless to use... the add on.

@Tylendal That's the problem. If they want to have great third party support, then they should've just add the second analog. That way, people won't hesitate to buy third party games, because they wouldn't need to spend more money to buy the second analog add on.

@luqmanr As far as I know, only 3rd party games actually use the second analog stick add on, don't they? Sounds like a shortcoming on the developers part to me. Games like Metroid Prime Hunters, Kid Icarus Uprising are both games that would generally have used a second analog stick conventionally, yet worked just fine (actually better, because they're faster and more precise) without.

Sorry, mister Carmack, that new experience you are talking about is usually some crappy motion gaming, tablet crap and other casual things that don't work so well with most "serious" games. Improved tech specs is that we want.

Actually Carmack's developed a prototype, a virtual reality device and while the words "virtual reality" instantly draw skeptical reactions critics who experienced the device have come away impressed. There was talk of "zero lag" while moving your head and it covering your entire field of vision, sounds new enough and revolutionary enough to me

@grbolivar There is a lot of good signs out there on the web that the WiiU will have decent-to-aweseom specs.... It is true that nothing have been confirmed yet by Nintendo, but there is still a lot of time between now and the release date, for users to know more about the WiiU.

About the 3DSXL, well I am disappointed too, but all of the other companies are doing the same thing. Sony did it with its mobile platform, Apple does it every year (seriously every year), as well as MS and Sony with the revision versions of the PS3 and Xbox360.

I think the main problem with gaming today is most of the bigger corporations (EA, Activison...) are too concerned with raising their stock at all cost. Just like anything once people stop loving what their doing and just want money they start to cut corners and screw consumers.

I still can't believe they are trying to block used games. Just because they make it so a person can't buy a used game does not necessarily mean they will buy it new. Some games I will never buy for full price and they really need to accept that fact. Also if I buy a used game I will most likely tell my friends about it (if it is good.) and guess what, they may buy it new. No these companies refuse to look at the whole picture and only want short term gains to please share holders. I suppose in time new indie developers will rise from the ashes of companies like EA which will still be wondering why their ship is sinking as they shovel out poor or incomplete games(Dragon Age 2 comes to mind).

The people at these places need to take a few basic economic classes, they can't force people to buy these games no matter how much they try to control the market. I for one will just spend money elsewhere and vote with my dollars. All of the next systems just seem like a trap. Trying to find new ways to bleed the customers of all their money not realizing that they only have so much to spend.Anyway, hopefully they will turn around at some point and build products for customers and not throw something out there no one asked for.

@mvilleguy88 Ah, but you are forgetting the people who DO buy new regardless. That and the people who buy the same thing just repainted that just absolutely jizz all over them selves when its announced. (cough, cough, any Call of Duty. )

@FlawlessGoBot Yeah your right unfortunately. It is always a longer process for the masses to follow the leaders. However I used to be a big Cod MW fan and have not bought any of the new ones. So as opinion leaders start leaving the game the rest will follow, slowly.

1. I dont get the issue gamespot has with WiiU specs you guys have more access to Nintendo in asking them this info or to research this info yet me with my pc can deduce this info based on the technical info given(and truthfully my own knowledge of hardware Ill admit)what the specs of this thing are and its clearly that of a 2007 Pc rig which are clearly above Xbox and Ps3 which are more like 2004 Pc rig. And this is mostly cause its newer tech and not cause Nintendo was trying to push advanced tech really. But instead of doing an analysis such as this gamespot does what it does which is bash and inject conjecture into the issue and act like fanboys instead of giving info and letting readers debate it based on the data.

2. Ive seen this info on the Xbox 720's potential features, which sound somewhat legit but I have doubts on some of its authenticity. For instance I dont see people wearing glasses and looking like douchebags with what appears to be tech too advanced to be believed projecting out of the television(scifi channel stuff). I want to see more down to earth believable info take the stage so to speak. Like Can I transfer my Zune videos over to the new system? Games announced,Game Engines its capable of running, stuff like that. As far as the surface tablet goes I dont see what it has to do with gaming at all especially since its clearly not associated with the Xbox brand and seems to be more of a tablet market competitor of Ipad and Android tablets.Though Im sure theyll have some apps for xbox live, until I see a connection to xbox its all speculation.

3. EA is like the devil of the gaming industry with what they do to consumers, it does not surprise me that they have more evil plans for consumers to pay crazy amounts of money through micro transactions and pocket attrition tactics.

I'm starting to realize that I may need a new hobby :-( Gaming for me lately has been one disappointment after another. Games with empty promises, angry communities with distasteful comments, nickel and diming the consumers, smug articles, uninspired events/ conventions...and I even read an article suggesting that gaming and porn are ruining this generation of men. Could be true...whatever. All I know is that it doesn't seem worth it these days. If it wasn't for a handful of developers and IPs (everything Valve does, Dark Souls, and a few others), I would have tossed my Wii, Xbox 360, 3DS and PS3 out the eBay window already. Actually...not sure why I haven't already with the Wii. It's been an ultra-expensive hobby with little return. I'll post some of your crappy replies to save you the trouble:

"you should see what it's like outside! Maybe you could get a real live girlfriend" - snarkypunk

"dude, wish I could throw away money like you do. got a rich family? probably own a mac" - poorpcelitist

"well why are you even on gamespot if you hate gaming so much? did ME3 ending make you send cupcakes too?" - corporatedefender

@sireltonjohn You know, you make some true pointers there. Gaming is one of my favorite hobbies, and even though, like you, I get upset at all the negativity in the industry sometimes, there's always something positive to be found. Example, sometimes I like to go back and play some NES/SNES/N64 games and remember the simpler days of video gaming. What return is there in that? Childhood memories that will last a lifetime - memories that make me realize why I got into gaming in the first place.

@sireltonjohn I still enjoy gaming, but I have a habit of not buying game until around a month after it comes out. Dunno it that's good or not, but I've been straying away from certain games and saving money when I should.

But one thing I will definitely agree on is that the community here and a lot of other gaming websites are pretty terrible.

@28362g That is the way to do it. I've been burned on preorders too many times. Unless it's Half-life 3...I'll pre-order that the day I hear about it...if they ever make it. Yes, gaming message boards/ forums tend to be a contest of sarcasm, or who can be the biggest douche bag. Not all the time however, which is why I'm here in the first place. I'll find some quality posts that are thoughtful, but that can be a needle in a haystack usually.

@sireltonjohn

wow I agree with you lots. Gaming has become pretty obtuse, and this article summed it all up. I remeber NES... that system kicked ass. I dont care if XBOX 720's got the processing power of a chimp, I just wanted to play some games. Maybe I grew too old for this, or it grew into a tacky enterprise. I wont be purchasing a new system.

Also, I like how you actually kept record of other people's poor responses. clever.

@adamomars I loved NES. It could be an age thing I guess. Or maybe I've got a serious case of cynical assholism. Thanks for the comment!

@rmat121 well they do and they don't. I find their games to be a rehash of the same formulas, just now you use motion controls or a second touch screen. Beyond that, I don't see much innovation. I just don't have the same faith I used to in Nintendo. I think the last Nintendo game I played that gave me a lasting impression was Zelda OOT. I had some fun with a few others but nothing on that level.

@sireltonjohn Probably not age lots of younger gamers enjoy older systems too. The graphics are really not what matters in a game, a truly well made game should pull you into the story whether they have block people or people who look insanely real. That's why I like nintendo they try for new experiences rather than amazing graphics.

Only thing I have to say is that the next Sony and Microsoft consoles aren't even announced yet, so how do these developers know for certain that they will only be battling over processing power? Maybe one or both of them will try something different this time around. I know if we're going by history alone they could be correct, but who's to say that's all it will come down to?

This is one of the reasons why I am drifting out of the gamer scene more and more, and I'm not pointing towards Nintendo, I'm pointing towards the scene. If you have critisizm towards Nintendo, why don't you people tell it to them? Why don't you contact them? No, instead, you post stupified opinions on a site with people that have easily impressable opinions. So much for the ''Gamers are smarter than the average Joe.'' studies, as soon as we don't like something, we bitch about it, instead of confronting it. Look at the people from Operation Rainfall, they did not like the fact that Nintendo didn't have any localization plans for Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower. But because these people didn't sit lazily on their asses, they contacted Nintendo, and they ultimatively succeeded. I also contacted Nintendo for the 3DS XL, they replied to me, so they know that at least 1 person didn't like what they did here.

If you have some constructive critizism/questions, feel free to send a message to Nintendo, they respond, unlike Sony in my previous experiences, and it damn sure wasn't a automated message, because they explicitly mentioned the 3DS XL in the message, here is the link: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/webform.jsp

And here is my message to them, if you are interested, of course, some people won't read it because they are too lazy. Where have we gone that we are too lazy to read? Anyway, here it is:

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us with your feedback regarding the recently announced Nintendo 3DS XL. I can certainly understand your thoughts on this matter and want you to know how much we appreciate you sending them in. While we are unable to discuss about our business decisions, I want to assure you that your comments will be added to our records and made available for other departments at the company to use as they see fit.

Sincerely, José Carlos Teixeira Nintendo of America Inc.

Original Message --- From: <> Received: 6/22/12 3:08:19 AM PDT To: <nintendo@noa.nintendo.com> Subject: Webform: Corporate Questions > Other Hello, I recently watched the Nintendo Direct livestream, and I was a bit disappointed by the 3DS XL. I saw some news articles about it on various sites, and other people were also quite disappointed. Here are the reasons why I, and other people (I asked them.) were disappointed. 1. Shigeru Miyamoto himself, stated that there would be no more re-designs/iterations of the original 3DS console. I am well aware that this might just be what he thinks about the console, but as one of the most important employees at Nintendo, shouldn't he have some words about the 3DS and it's life cycle? 2. No secondary slide pad. Why is there none? People explicitly stated that IF there was another re-design/iteration of the 3DS, there should be a secondary slide pad. There is clearly space for one right under the A, B, etc. buttons. Why was this business decision made? Sure, it might make owners of the original 3DS a bit angry, but they would buy it eventually, unlike now that the main incentives are a bigger console all together, and a longer battery life. And Nintendo made it pretty clear that they are aware of the need of this with the CCP add-on. Why is there no secondary slider? As much as I think, I cannot think of a compelling enough argument to not have a secondary slider. 3. The screen resolution. If you are going to make a console with bigger screens, change the resolution. Keeping the same resolution will just take over the same problems with the 3DS resolution to the 3DS XL, and it will additionally just show the nasty bad looking parts of a game. 4. The fact that is a larger console, for being a handheld. The majority of people do NOT want a bigger console, that's a unnecessary waste of resources, if you are going to make a handheld, keep it small, the 3DS was perfect as it was, size wise, and it should have stayed that way, unless this would have been a 3DS with 2 sliders, and maybe some more enhancements. That is all I currently noticed, along with a lot of other people, I will await answers, if those are not possible to answer, well then, what can I do, I'll just walk away disappointed by my favorite console/game manufacturer/developer. ------ Please do not remove your unique tracking number! ------
