SimCity sells 1.1 million in two weeks

Despite launch marred by various server issues, EA's latest city-building game is "biggest SimCity launch of all time."

SimCity has sold over 1.1 million copies since its rocky launch March 5, publisher Electronic Arts announced today. Sales at that level make this year's entry the "biggest SimCity launch of all time."

No Caption Provided

Of the 1.1 million SimCity sales, about 54 percent were digital copies purchased through Origin or other download services, EA said. Origin digital sales alone made up 44 percent of all copies purchased.

"SimCity is one of the storied brands in gaming, and Maxis delivered a game re-envisioned and engineered for the online age," EA chief operating officer Peter Moore said in a statement.

Some may contest that claim, as SimCity server woes made the game unplayable for many during the game's North American and European launches earlier this month.

As recompense for SimCity's hobbled launch, EA announced earlier today that gamers can download one free PC digital copy of any of the following titles if they have a registered copy of the game by March 25: Battlefield 3, Bejeweled 3, Dead Space 3, Mass Effect 3, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Plants vs. Zombies, or SimCity 4: Deluxe Edition.

SimCity's arrival helped Origin set a new record for peak concurrent users at 1.3 million "and rising," according to EA. By comparison, competitor Valve's Steam service has 4.8 million concurrent players right now and a peak concurrent userbase of 5.7 million.

EA also revealed several other SimCity statistics for the game's first two weeks. Since launch, players have logged more than 15 million hours of online gameplay and built more than 5.7 million original cities. In all, players have created 780 million buildings and SimCity mayors together have built enough road and railroad tracks to circle the globe 40,000 times, EA said.

SimCity will launch on Mac later this year. For more, check out GameSpot's review of SimCity.

@Bennettfoam EA will have to subtract one from that as well since yours truly returned the copy unopened.

@G4mBi7 nice, you got DS3...microtransaction much? fact of the matter is, they are doing whats expected from them now, not what was expected from them on launch day, you dont need to say sorry if you dont screw up. the DRM has been hurting legit players more than it has been hurting pirates or hackers, and region play is a feature that could have been in an optional multiplayer mode, not making it mandatory. as a consumer its my right to vote with my wallet, Sim City games in the past were brilliant, and i bought each and everyone one of them, maybe this one is as well, but i can live without supporting shady buisness practices.

@G4mBi7 @surferosh @blackace @ColdstoneX3 @Bennettfoam I'm glad we all don't go off your logic... Be like buying a car at full price that's a complete POS with several issues, but you like the feel of the seat, so you are going to by it. Then defend the manufacturer because he gave you a free tank of gas... Intern, manufacturer continues to shovel out shit cause you idiots will buy it... Aww the great free market system for backwards people.

@surferosh @G4mBi7 @blackace @ColdstoneX3 @Bennettfoam Shit happens, you take the good with the bad. EA fucked up the launch, we already knew this. That doesn't change simple facts, the game is online because of region play and DRM. Just because it holds the sim city name doesn't mean we focus on a single city any longer. I'm not defending EA's actions or choices, but Sim City now that it is stable and 'most' of the frustrations are behind us, is by far the hardest and most fun sim city i've ever played! The fact that EA is giving out anything as an apology is shocking to me, but the fact that they are at least somewhat trying to make amends is comforting. I am not blind to the fact that they are only giving away BF3 because BF4 is around the corner, or nothing but standard editions so that people are prompted to buy the DLCs, it is an industry in which the only color that matters is green, same as any other corporation. Doesn't stop anyone from buying a Windows PC or iPhone.

They just need to patch some things. I know that we should expect a finished product from an AAA publisher, but that's just now how the industry works anymore. If blizzard can't release a finished game, then nobody can.

Simcity has the groundwork to be an outstanding game. They need to clean it up, fix some terribly broken mechanics (freight, traffic, etc) and make the maps bigger by about 25%.

@TheLeftHandDoom Microtransactions galore, we are on the way to another game industry crash akin to the one in the 80's. We must demand complete products.

1.1 million reasons why EA will learn absolutely nothing from the SimCity fiasco.

If you knew about the always-on internet, bought the game, and then complained, you're part of the problem, not the solution. You can vote with your wallet in weeks OTHER than the very first week of a game's launch.

Given EA's reputation for launches of big, online games, you should have waited. We should ALSO expect EA's game to work, but you know... "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."

At this rate, EA has fooled the gaming community... what, a half-dozen times? So instead of gamers LEARNING and then EA having to learn a lesson on their own, all EA is learning is that we'll do anything they want.

Hm. Context. They recently said they expected 5 million sales of 'Dead Space 3', an IP respected but not as well known to gamers as the name of 'Sim City'. Okay, this is over two weeks and not 6-7 weeks, but can we see this game reach 5 million? Or even equal the numbers of 'Dead Space' after the utterly borked release?

Maybe to boost sales they should bundle a free game... oh.

This is a prime example of why publishers continue to implement business practices that are unfriendly to the consumer.

In most "normal" markets, a company that abuses its core customers would lose said customers, and unless they changed, may go out of business.

In the "gaming" market, a company that abuses its core customers will see a temporary drop in sales, but still sell millions of copies and see large profits (Simcity, Diablo III, COD treadmill, etc...), providing no reason for them to change.

So no matter how much we may despise these abhorrent business practices, if gamers continue to support them...and buy the oh so shiny games they release...then they will not only continue these practices...but may push further...providing less and less content, while charging more...and further limiting our already limited play options...

@BigGerty The problem is that some just don't care, but some of us DO! I voted with my wallet, EA can have their crap back. I boosted Bioshock Infinite's sales numbers.

@BigGerty well said man.. sadly there are very few of us who will vote with our wallets and let our displeasure known.. and our numbers pale in comparison to those who go and buy such products..

it is surprising that many people will not buy stuff from Amazon and Starbucks cos they evade taxes but very few will actually stay away from buying games from companies that just keep milking the customers.

The only two games that I can say I'll be buying with absolute certainty in the near future: Witcher 3, and Cyberpunk 2077. I'll happily give my money to companies like CDPR that still treat *me* with respect - the ones who take full price for a game and actually earn it by giving me a full game to play in return. A game that "just works", which doesn't have a built-in self-destruct, which I can install and play a month from now, or ten years from now because it isn't tied to some company-controlled ecosystem.

Companies like EA, Ubisoft, and Blizzard that retain the option of preventing me from using something that I've paid for... they can't go out of business fast enough in my book. When you pay for something and then can't use it later - that's a RENTAL. Except, these companies all fear that sort of terminology. They want to have the option to take things back (IMO, so that you can't collect or play OLD games, and must constantly buy new ones), yet the PR departments still use the "game sales" terminology liberally because consumers are willing to pay more for the illusion of ownership. Sadly, many PC gamers buy without thinking, and also have no backbone when it comes to boycotting.

Do the smart thing - support companies like CDPR who still respect PC gamers and actually give us something for our hard-earned dollars. Don't feed the companies that abuse you. That's the only way things are going to get better.

Out of all the people on here slating the game, I wonder how many have actually played it? They are instead just going by what they've heard and the server issues. I think Simcity is a great game, just let down by EA screwing everyone over by not labelling it as an MMO. Plus calling games "services" which they are not.

Now the trolls will flame this comment, but I won't post on here again so don't expect me to be part of your flame war, or try and see my reaction

Good job being a grown up and not listening to any replies to what you say. Just like a real adult.

I love how EA is the devil incarnate until they give you a free game. If i run a multibillion dollar corporation one day i should really remind myself to **** you over constantly as long as i extend the promise of 2 free games a year. No....no, lets make it 3. Only fair for all the sex we'll be having. lmao smh....

@Afonsop no, that's not true. 1.1 million people who were expecting a good game from a usually dependable company, Maxis. If the price wasn't so rank high and I wasn't a patient person to wait a few weeks and see reviews I would have also pre-ordered. Doesn't mean they are decieved, they just wanted to play a new Sim City game..
