PSP price drops to $170

Sony celebrates its portable system's second anniversary by trimming a handful of Hamiltons off the hardware's Core Pack.

The PlayStation Portable was released in North America just over two years ago, and to mark the occasion, Sony is dropping the price on the bare-bones package of its gaming handheld. Effective today, the PSP Core Pack (a system with AC adaptor and battery) retails for $169.99, a $30 drop from its previous price point of $199.99.

This is the first price drop for a system package in the PSP line. While the original $249.99 Value Pack was replaced by the $199.99 Core Pack, part of the cost reduction was due to Sony's leaving out accessories like the 32MB memory card.

Sony also announced that the PSP titles Daxter and Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror have now been included in the Greatest Hits line of games and should retail for $19.99.

Analysts welcomed the news, with Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian saying it should be a shot in the arm for the system.

"We expect a modest step-up in PSP unit sales during an otherwise seasonally slower period for the video game industry," Sebastian said in a note to investors today. "We note that a Wal-Mart promotion on Black Friday last year generated significant sales volume for the PSP at a discounted price of $169, providing one indication of potential consumer demand."

In his own note to investors, Pacific Crest Securities' Evan Wilson said that the system has had trouble meeting sales expectations since its launch, in large part because of its price, and that the price cut should help address that. However, Wilson said the move will likely have a limited effect on the company's finances.

I've got both DS and PSP but I think this price drop won't do just about anything to the sales. I prefer the DS a lot more because the PSP just pisses me off with the crap joystick and the DS just seems to offer a lot more games.

I'm 30 years old, I had a DS and PSP, I sold the PSP to a younger friend of mine at a low price because I just don't play it and I didn't care. I have a Ipod 5.5G so the PSP seemed pointless. I don't know why anyone would say the PSP has better games and the DS is for kids. Any game reviewer and many adults like myself would dissagree.

Its a start but its still not enough for me to purchase the system. There are relatively few games I am interested in for the PSP, and $169 still isn't good enough to compete with the $129 of the superior software line up from the DS Lite.

The PSP needs more than a price drop to sell units. Gamers previously looking to buy one might be more inclined to "walk" out and grab one now, but this changes very little in why people should buy the system. Even so this should have happened a year ago when interest decline was in full-swing, not two years later. $30 is $30 but I'm not going to run out and save $30 when I could just save $200 by not buying one, heh.

$30 is a start, and probably the best we could expect. There are a couple of PSP games that I'm interested in checking out, but my DS still owns my portable time. I'd pick up a PSP before I get a PS3, but this drop is not going to trigger a purchase for me.

Awesome! Now there's no excuse to purchase a dumb-down DS, when you can get the real deal with the PSP. It has a great games library that doesn't consist of NES/SNES/N64 ports that you've already owned and played a billion times before. It's has games that last more than 10 hours and that have graphics that are almost on par with the PS2. Games such as Metal Gear Portable Ops, Gran Theft Auto, Lumines, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone, LocoRoco, Tekken, BurnOut, Hot Shots Golf, Tony Hawk, and WipeOut as well as many more. Please, don't be a sucker and fall for the hype the DS has. The DS will surely disappoint you with over simplistic games and down right ugly graphics. I know all of the Nintendo fans will call me out, but you only do so because you know its nothing but the truth. The PSP rocks!!!

Man, the only reason I even remotely want one is for the Dracula X Chronicles and Final Fantasy Tactics releases... that's 2 games. Only 2.

>In the big picture of the sales war it's barely going to make a dent on the DS (In fact next to the impact of Pokemon DnP, Sony's effort looks weak), I'm sorry, 25 million PSP sold vs 39 Million DS (2 generation) is 'barely a dent'?? take your fanboyism outside please,

Yeah, not like a price drop is going to help...PSP still has crappy games, and a lower price tag isn't going to change that.

I think they said it all in the article, the price drop will help sell a initial amount, but that will level off again in a few months. I think price doesn't make or break decisions when it comes to what portable to buy but preferences. But hey $30 is an extra game.

Hopefully this will help gamers enjoy the growing library of the PSP. I can remember when I bought my PSP, I wasn't giving a DS a chance. But once I bought a DS, I realized that there are plenty of games I could get into. I'm sure it would be the same for DS owners who don't want to get a PSP out of "fanboyism". Both handhelds are vastly different & offer great content. The PSP has made some strides in the games that have been coming out lately. With this price drop, hopefully gamers can take advantage of it.

I bought one for cheaper than this about 2 months ago.. Played all the best games out for it (Killzone etc) but every game has the worst controls cause of the crappy nub. It makes me think the stylus on the DS was actually a good design instead of a gimmick.. I give you all a fair warning about the PSP.. It has this allure that brings you in, but it totally totally totally disappoints after the cool-factor wears off. Think before you buy.

It will be exactly that, a shot in the arm, but it won't by any means be a big improvement (and I heavily doubt Sonys ability to market it, most people will be either oblivious to the price drop or just won't care). In the big picture of the sales war it's barely going to make a dent on the DS (In fact next to the impact of Pokemon DnP, Sony's effort looks weak), but it will help in it's own way.

I find it surprising that most of the profit goes to tertiary industry... they should reduce profits from their so the price cuts are more meaning full and easily implemented.

Nice mention of the Atari Lynx by a previous poster.. that was an incredible system, one that I still own and sometimes pull out and play. The PSP is a very cool handheld but it just feels like it comes up short. Between poor game support overall, (mainly retreads of previous PS2 games), only 1 analog stick, and a few other minor annoyances, it always will be behind the DS. Really ashame as this could be the crown jewel from Sony if they tried a little harder.

If I had any inclination towards a portable system the PSP would be it. That said, I think a good book is a better companion on the road than a gaming system. There actually is such a thing as overly limiting your options through potential exposure to one medium.

Damn, everyone likes to reinforce the stereotypes about each system. The PSP does have good games, and not having as many as the DS doesn't make it suck. I can't justify buying a PSP right now, but still, it's a decent handheld.

Its good that the psp is price dropping... however, I am sticking to what Kaz says... its comparable to the walkman... so whilst the old ones get cheaper... the redesigned ones get released and you are back at square one :)

markd751 Let's be realistic, PSP will never beat DS in sales, games for the PSP suck and there's too few of them. The DS has better sales mainly due to the fact that it is for a wider audience, while the PSP is mainly to gamers. The majority of people who own brain age are not people who would play MGS : PO, Ratchek and Clank or God Of War. I don't own a PSP or a DS because I don't care about their games. I do enjoy MGS, R and C and GOW, but my PS2 plays similar games better. I use my own car to travel, so I can't play a portable console during a trip. If I'm home, then why would I bother with a little screen when I can play on a big one?

Calm down all you ds fanboys, the psp is a better system. And these socalled subpar games that you refer to on psp have better ratings than those on the ds. There is nothing that I want from the ds that I cannot get on the wii. So stick that sylus thing where it doesn't belong

The PSP will only be successful when Sony increase it's clock speed, lengthen it's battery life and make a model with two analogue thumbsticks (vital for 3rd/1st person shooters) otherwise it will join the ranks of the Gamegear and Lynx as technically better handhelds but let down by accessability problems. I love my PSP though especially with it's connectivity with my ps3.

lol, I like how PSP fanboys suddenly think that they are going to topple the DS' at least 10 million unit advantage (worldwide). Sony did this as a business move only due to the obvious huge DS releases coming up, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. The only reason Nintendo hasn't had a price drop for the DS in two years is largely because of the PSP not having dropped price. I expect Nintendo to cut the DS' price down to $100 by the end of the summer.
