PS4's VR Headset Not as "High-End" as Rift, Palmer Luckey Says

Plus, Luckey says he gave the PlayStation VR team a demo of Rift sometime in 2012 or earlier.

Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey has spoken out to say PlayStation VR "isn't quite as high-end" as the Oculus Rift, though he still described the competing device as a "good headset."

No Caption Provided

His comments came as part of an interview with IB Times, in which the interviewer suggested that PlayStation VR is the one headset best poised to compete with Rift. Luckey partially agreed, but also pointed out that Rift and PlayStation VR are catering to different markets.

"That might be true," he said when asked if PlayStation VR was Rift's biggest competitor. "I think that there's not many people who already own a PS4 who don't own a gaming PC who are going to go out and make that roughly $1,500 all-in investment in the Rift. It really is a separate market. They're bringing virtual reality to a different group of people who I don't think were ever really a part of our market anyway."

Luckey added: "It's also worth noting that their headset isn't quite as high-end as ours--it's still, I think, a good headset--and the PlayStation 4 is not nearly as powerful as our recommended spec for a PC."

Rift requires a capable gaming PC. PlayStation VR is powered by the PS4, which is already in the homes of many millions of people around the world.

Also in the interview, Luckey reveals that he invited some Sony VR engineers to come see Rift before the device's Kickstarter campaign started in 2012. Giving Sony a peek at what Oculus was making at such an early stage was part of Luckey's drive to help VR, as a medium, finally take off in a meaningful way.

"I knew some people at Sony working on VR before I even started my Kickstarter campaign, actually, and we brought them in early on to show them what we were working on, to talk about what the minimum standards were for a good VR experience," he said. "What does it take to make something that won't make people uncomfortable and won't turn people off of virtual reality?

"That's really the most important thing, is to not poison this well for all of us in the future, and I think they understand that. They also understand the importance of content, and they've been doing a lot of work making sure there's a lot of VR games."

Just this week, Sony boss Kaz Hirai said that more than 200 developers have signed up for the PlayStation VR development program, with more than 100 games projects said to be underway.

Earlier this week, Oculus announced that the first Rift consumer model will cost $600. Sony has not announced the price point for PlayStation VR, though that information should come relatively soon, as the headset is scheduled to ship in the first half of 2016. With regards to the price, PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida previously said Sony's aim was to go "as low as possibly can be done."

I tried the Playstation VR at the PSX in San Francisco. The set was solid. Everything felt 1:1 in terms of head turning and motion. I was surprised. I'd like to try the Rift for a comparison.

so I guess the playstation vr might be cheaper than the oculus rift then, probably around $300 - $400.

All this guys is doing is turning future customers against him and his company. He could learn a thing or twenty from Phil Spencer, who goes out of his way to play nice with SONY.

Hmmmm the competition saying the probably cheaper headset isn't so high end.

Is that build quality or performance lucky?

Also I don't know anyone with a PS4 that has a gaming rig. Let alone one that could support the OR.

I know several people that have a ps4 and gaming rig.

I'm at a loss how you came to the conclusion one cancels out the other.

Edit:

Never mind, I misread. You're just saying you don't know anyone with both not that people don't own both.

@crxuchilbara: i would think the ps VR will be limited to the ps4 hardware, so 30 or lower fps. rift needs a pretty good PC.. so 60fps+? Just guessing btw.

Seems like the price tag has been revealed. $800 for the PS VR. That is twice that of the console itself. And $200 than the Rift. I know these are pretty high end tech but it seems to be a bit steep. More interested in the HTC Vive myself. But it all depends on price. I wonder if this is just going to be another pointless fad.

@ojmstr: it's also telling that Sony did not say the price was incorrect.... History shows that when this happens on Amazon it usually ends up being correct or close to it when it is announced.

@smoovone1: Actually, recent history shows that when a company shows its hand first, Sony comes in around $100 under them. Remember the Xbox One launch? And here we are. 36 million to 18 million. Software is where the money is. If Sony truly has 100 VR games in the works, they will sell the PSVR at a loss (it still requires a PS4) and make it up on the software.

5.7 million PS4s sold during the holidays, but 35 million digital software sales during the same timespan.

@smoovone1: Probably Sony that leaked that wrong info them self and pretty soon within the next days they will announce that the PSVR headset will cost $500 and everyone will be like "hm that's not so bad, that is affordable". Trust me Sony are smart, they are not gonna price this out of the mass consumer market.

It amazes me how much knowledge gamers are lacking when it comes to this stuff. The technology in these headsets are extremely expensive. The psvr will either sell at the same price as the rift (and take a loss) or it will be more so they can break even or profit. I think it will cost more, because Sony cannot afford to take losses at the moment and are fine tuned to profit right now. To put things into perspective, The cell phone you own retails for somewhere between $600 to almost $1000 and has less technology in it then these headsets. Sony has to sell it with a processing box that is almost the size of a Wii U so there is no way it sells for cheaper then the rift.... It's common sense! People are in for a huge disappointment when Sony announces the price of the psvr. A $650 to $800 price point would not surprise me at all if they decided they want to go the profit route.

@smoovone1:

It amazes me how much internet commenters don't know about business.

Read a book or two.

There either is right now, or was, people sitting in a board room at Sony crunching numbers, deciding how many millions of dollars they can lose to win the battle later on software.

Go grab a business book bud, or maybe a magazine. Things aren't always priced at "what they cost". Sony IS going to take a loss, and you have NO idea what Sony can afford. It's just ridiculous, people like you who "know".

If you don't think that several smart people- with more business degrees than you have fingers, who make millions of dollars a year, who made the PS4 a resounding success- know damn well that their product is widely considered "a step below" the Rift, and that they CAN NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT sell it for the same price, than your naive at best, stupid at worst.

I will bet you my entire next paycheck ($2,343.09) against yours, right here right now, that there is ZERO chance that PSVR comes in above $450, and probably $400.

If there's a way to make it an official, legal bet, show me, I'll do it.

It is SUICIDE for PSVR to cost as much or more than the Rift.

You think those CEOs, CFOs, CTOs, and Marketing Firms don't know that???!!

@smoovone1:

And who's to blame that people don't know J shit about VR? The very companies that want to sell it. I've been preaching for days now about what VR could really be and I'm getting a bit tired; if people who frequent sites like these don't even understand, how will VR ever take off? VR is so much more than just some half baked Kinect like experiences we've seen so far, but neither OR nor Sony cares enough to educate people. They rather show of a shark cage and a pew pew, bang bang demo, which I admit was impressive, but will ultimately grow old very quick.

A VR headset will be your our own personal cinema for TV, movies and gaming, and not just tailor made experiences: every game can be played on your own virtual 140" screen! VR will give us the chance to have front row seats for every concert we like, we can sit in every major stadium or arena in the world watching the game you want to see, live as if you were there. VR will let us shop for pants, buy new cars after seeing them in VR and VR will let us travel the world while we're sitting in our lazy boy. $600 is peanuts for everything VR will be and it's absolutely crazy that they are able to do it at that price!

@smoovone1: Well they officially said it'd be roughly the cost of a current gen system. So thinking it'd be twice as much is kind of dumb. That oculus guy had to eat his words because of his $350 ballpark figure. I doubt Sony is that stupid to make the same mistake.

Lol at you thinking that this will take a loss at the same price when the higher quality rift isn't taking a loss.

Spec wise it's about equal when you consider its lower resolution but higher refresh, also dont forget Sony has a past of playing with hmd's, motion tracking and some of the best optical knowledge and capabilities in the market. Will be interesting to see how the 2 compare in real usage.

@smoovone1: Don't blame the gamers.... Sony and microsoft sold shitty, budget gimped PC's as entertainment devices claiming that nobody who games on a console could afford any more.... Then Samsung came out with "yeah... just buy this little thing and use some technology you probably already have"...

...Now Sony is about to put their hands out and ask for upwards of $600 because "you want a premium experience right?".

Sony and Microsoft consoles to me symbolize budget hardware. That's a reputation they've earned and worked towards. Asking for upwards of $300 for a toy that connects to the ps4 is going to be an extremely big ask. Why not just do it properly, get an occulus rift and have some degree of flexibility with your device and it's uses?

@ajzoot: do you know if it's compatible with the ps4?

most people don't have a pc rig that can handle the Rift. they would be asked to fork out another $1500 on top of the $400 they already spent on a ps4. it would be better to go with the psvr if you own a ps4 and have the catalogue of games that sony will be producing over the next few years.

@sampson3121: Another $1500? no. See the beauty of PC's is they are upgradable. Chances are if you have a half decent PC already you'll only have to maybe upgrade a few components. $1500 would be for someone who needs to buy everything from scratch. Even then $1500 is a huge overestimate for a PC capable of running rift.

The irony here being the Sony version will be the biggest selling version of VR and if VR is to truly take off and go mainstream it requires success from Sony.

Question for those that know better, are any of the headsets going to work on XB1?

@kyelo: None of them will, but you can stream XB1 games on the Oculus Rift with Windows 10. The games won't be in VR, it'll just play on a 2D big screen in a virtual room.

This is a very click baity and negative news article that serves no purpose but to draw out fanboys.

I've seen the specs of both and it looks like both are basically on par. Neither headset is more high end than the other. So Palmer can shut his mouth. I also don't understand why Palmer is acting like he was the first to make VR and acting like he helped Sony when Sony was working on VR before him and Sony also let him look at PS VR.

What Palmer meant to say is that the PS4 simply isn't as strong as a high end PC which is true but he doesn't consider the fact that the PS4 is cheaper and is lower maintenance.

"PS4's VR Headset Not as "High-End" as Rift, Palmer Luckey Says"

ooooohhh shots fired :D

I think they're both awesome but between the 2 I'm a lot more interested in their game content, sony's pretty much video games lately (PSVR being tied to PS4 being an advantage), with them pretty much doing whatever to get devs on board while I haven't really seen too much of Oculus Rift's gaming catalogue (EVE V, Lucky Tales, Edge of Nowhere and whatever moddable FPP game currently out now) the disadvantage being that PCs are varied while the PS4 is a closed unit

I'm getting both, I mean either way I expect both platforms to get more (possibly unique) content as we go along their respective lifecycles ;P
