Pachter warns Wii U will finish a 'distant third' behind PS4 and Xbox One

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter says a combination of the Wii U's technical specifications and lack of third-party support will be a challenge for Nintendo.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has spoken about how he believes Nintendo's Wii U will be unable to compete with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and declared that Nintendo's home console will finish a "distant third in this console race."

No Caption Provided

"Nintendo's in trouble right now," said Pachter in an interview with ABC News. "Nintendo, I think, waited two years too long to launch a competitive console, you know, a high-definition console with the PS3 and the Xbox 360. I think by the time they did launch a console that stacks up really well, the other two guys passed them by."

Microsoft and Sony will both launch the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later in 2013, a year after Nintendo launched the Wii U.

Pachter believes the lack of third-party publisher support will also contribute to Nintendo being unable to sell the Wii U to a mass market audience. "The publishers are pretty excited about supporting the Xbox One and the PS4. They really didn't say anything [during E3 2013] about the Wii U."

During E3 2013 Nintendo revealed its suite of first-party Nintendo software for the coming months, including Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD.

Nintendo reported in April that sales of the Wii U stood at 3.45 million worldwide, as Nintendo reported a profit of ¥7.09 billion ($71.3m/£46.7m) for the financial year. Nintendo has also said that its 3DS has become the console of choice in Japan.

"We know EA has no games in development for Wii U," added Pachter. "If others follow suit, I mean if you see Activision pull support, if you see Ubisoft, you see Take 2 pull support, the Wii U is a Nintendo-only gaming device, which is the way they were back with the NES in 1985. They're not going to sell a lot of consoles if they don't have games like FIFA, and Battlefield, and Call of Duty, and Grand Theft Auto."

EA said in May that it had no games in development for the Wii U, but has since tried to retract its statement. Ubisoft continues to support the machine.

"I think [Nintendo] are at the bottom of a huge mountain with a huge uphill climb," said Pachter. "I don't think they're going to get that mojo back. I think these two guys are passing them by. And this PS4, priced $50 more than the Wii U, why would anybody buy a Wii U? Unless they just have to play Nintendo games. I think the way it actually shakes out is anybody who buys a Wii U that really is a hardcore gamer is going to buy an PS4 or an Xbox One in addition, so they can play those third-party titles they love. So I think Nintendo becomes a distant third in this console race."

The thing is: people are more accustomed nowadays to have everything presented on a silver platter. People want to put only the minimal amount of effort to get what they want. After all, they are either lazy, ignorant, or already worked their ass off at work to have money to buy a console. PS and XBox provide this type of convenience, and require only minimal brain activity to get a kick (of course, with some exceptions). Nintendo games require more development time, are more polished, more exclusive, and can demand more effort from the player. This is - unfortunately - not what most people are looking for anymore.

@thijs-x The length of time doesnt necessarally mean a deeper story. It could also mean more useless clutter within the game structure. Are PS and Xbox wrong for instantly giving you what you paid for.

@torreth1 @thijs-x Indeed, length does not reflect quality per se. But I have to say, Nintendo games are smoother than most PS/Xbox games, and provide less of an easy and fast fix generally. That does not fall out of the sky. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with Sony's and Microsoft's approach. I believe Sony and Xbox (and their developers) need to be commended for their brilliance to exploit the American attitude towards the gaming industry to maximize business. They even manage to recover very very quickly from abysmal decisions (e.g. the stuff Microsoft tried to pull recently).

@dummpymonkey123 @thijs-x @torreth1 @jd7904 toss in an occasional gamecube game while you're at it, you'd be surprised how well they hold up.

@jd7904 I like em all, and play em all, from Forza, F-zero and grand turismo to Resident evil, street fighter, zelda, and Myst. It's all about variety for me. Hell, I even freakin LOVE Kirby's Dream Course. Does that make me a softy, and not a "hardcore gamer"? What does that mean, anyway?

@thijs-x @torreth1 @jd7904 I think you should try a wii just because it has the ability to do both yes you sacrifice power but the gain in innovation and play-ability in my opinion is well worth it

@torreth1 @thijs-x @jd7904 It really depends on what you find enjoyable Torreth1. I'd recommend to at least check it out, and certainly not write it off as an inferior machine. If anything, it's a bold machine, that has superb experiences waiting for you.

some of the best games of all time could run on the graphics chip in your phone. graphics dont make the gameplay better, just makes it prettier. Also some of the most beautiful games was because of art style, not the hardware. Okami, Muramasa and Jet Set Radio are good examples. What kind of games do you like? RPG, Platform, Shooter??

@jd7904 @thijs-x I know, and I respect your opinion. I actually agree with you, and what you say makes sense. I'm more into the art side of video games with a deep sense of immersion and story (Windwaker was absolutely fantastic) than a quick fix with graphics that are considered to be superb. But hey, sometimes I put in a round of Street fighter or MW3, also great once in a while. It's all good. I'm glad companies have different perspectives, that makes the whole video game thing more rounded and complete.

@thijs-x @jd7904 Perhaps I should buy a wii U then. I've always had the assumption that power=ability=more enjoyment. At least thats what I've been lead to believe.

@jd7904 @thijs-x it really depends on what is considered to be enjoyable, and what the state of mind of the producer is. For instance, Miyamoto asks himself frequently if what he's making would be enjoyable to himself, without influences and opinions from outside. This way of making a video game approaches art, and is irrespective of how you make it. Miyamoto is more of an artist than the dude that made MW3

@torreth1 @thijs-x @PosiTVEMinD355 @dummpymonkey123 I understand your reservations torreth1, but I think dummpymonkey123 makes a point. Nintendo puts emphasis on quality gameplay, while other companies focus more on graphics and quicker fixes, that are catered to the target population. Both can take a long time to produce, but the end product can be vastly different, and influences longevity of a game substantially.

@dummpymonkey123 @torreth1 @thijs-x @PosiTVEMinD355 That would be valuable reasoning to me and quite logical. I have noticed PS games have become incredibly "satisfied with one play through" oriented despite the cost of the game. I would hold on to a game if it retained high replay value.

@dummpymonkey123 As an example I have replayed Super Mario 64 50x and still enjoy it, but I can't bring myself to go and replay through Jak and Daxter. J&D is a good game but there are some things that were just not very well thought out.

@torreth1 @thijs-x @PosiTVEMinD355 Majority of Nintendo games have high resale value because the quality of the game provides usually 100's of hrs n terms of replay value most games don't have that and thats the reason I believe a gorgeous game like Last of us isnt worth 60 at all

@thijs-x @PosiTVEMinD355 @torreth1 I have reservations. These games take years to produce on all of these systems and have different parties on all sides. For your assertion to be correct one would have to prove the length of time it takes to produce a game matched against its difficulty in creating its superiour quality as well as an objective opinion about the said quality of the game. It could be that the games stay more expensive in Nintendos resale bin because they cost more to produce, or people tend to hold on to the games due to various factors that drive the price up.

@torreth1 @thijs-x I think that for Nintendo, cranking out quality is on the top of their list, regardless of time lines, demands, and sales. They actually want to bring something new, even if that involves massive risks. I call that hardcore, and bold. The result is solid games that are relevant for a long time. MS and Sony apply a relatively safe and more business-oriented approach. Regardless of essential quality, they prefer to sell quick and dirty, based on popularity and ease.

@torreth1 @thijs-x He's saying, in a way, that games from Nintendo are usually worth it, hence the reason why they always have a high resale value. Whereas every PS3 or 360 game, eventually will make it to the $9.99 bin

@dummpymonkey123 I thinkit will be

Sony - 60-65m

Nintendo - 35-40m

MS- 25-30m

With the lack of BC for Sony and MS and the complete ignorance of MS we will see a decline in adoption of the new consoles in general. Also I don't think the leap is there this generation. most will not see that big of a difference graphically.

@jd7904 @dummpymonkey123 Whats wrong with you guys? Dont you think people will forgive and forget before the Xbox system gets released, and why so much confidence in Nintendos comp with Xbox one. They votes have only been between the PS4 and the xbox one. Nobody has gauged how the runner ups will perform against each other.

@torreth1 That's just what the media is pushing right now. They did the same with 360 vs PS3 and ignored the Wii. How did that turn out? the X1 and PS4 are almost the exact same thing, locked down PCs. It is redundant to have both an X1 and PS4 because of the fact that 90% of the games can be played on both. The Wii U will not be as successful as the wii but Nintendo has earned more trust from consumers than MS could ever hope to imagine

@beez1717 It will be interesting to see if all Halo fans and GoW fans are staying with the MS console.
If they do,the numebr of sold X1 consoles should be around 5-7 millions alone just coz of that games.

I don't think it will out sell the Playstation 4. However, pretty positive it will out sell the Xbox one. Let's face it Microsoft slapped its customers in the face several times to many. Not to mention the fact you but systems based on games. And come on, do you really think the xbox has better games than Nintendo. A company that has outlasted every other company. Ninteno is a company that knows how to pull in their customers. Microsoft is to greedy. And from the sounds of things with Sony, they are on a slippery slope.

@leon5402 Sony will probably edge out Nintendo for the top spot, and yeah, tons of people are still mad at M$, even after they dropped their XBone policies. It's more than likely that XBone will possibly be trailing far behind the PS4 and Wii U. I can't trust Microsoft after hearing that my friend's 360 broke and the RROD fiasco. Faulty hardware and charging for online play? I'll pass.

Developers have gotten lazy lets face facts that's the reason shooter games have doubled every console generation no one cares for Innovation any more and thats the reason why Nintendo is struggling but hopefully the new games coming out will change that like they always do

The 3DS reminds me of the SNES.
The 3DS has an incredible line up of RPG's...wish those were on the Wii U.
I am afraid a WiiU pricecut alone will not be enough...at least not for me.
Ironically i am thinking now to buy a Wii U if the price is right and seperatly the Wii games Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story to play on it.

Can anyone rate/recommend the following Wii games?
Baroque,Eldar Saga,Rune Factory and Fragile Dreams.
Thx

The new game costs here around 50 euros and used about 33.
The special edition incl. the red controller new 99 euros, used 55.
Can you recommend the special edition since i will need the classic controller anyway?

What happens if I want to play the next Zelda game, Bayonetta 2, X, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Mario Kart, Sonic: The Lost World and Smash Bros but you don't care about Halo, Killzone, Titanfall, Fifa, GTA, Forza, Infamous or GT6 Michael? I can still play Batman, Assassin's Creed and COD: Blops II on WiiU if I want to. The real issue here is that third parties have given extremely lame excuses not to support the platform. If it's a case of low instal base I can make an "assumption", like those you like to make, that WiiU will start selling a lot more units beginning in August with Pikmin 3. Also Pachter, you're only considering western developers with a lot of visibility. What about the rest of the spectrum? Nintendo has not even begun yet when it comes to WiiU. They have been focusing on 3DS until now, but you can count the following months with software to support the home console.

I'm sure the WiiU will sell well, if they have a price cut. Everyone was skeptical of the 3DS but after their price cut, their sales had risen greatly.

@dummpymonkey123 @bgna8980 OF course it will sell. Not very well, but there you go. Here's the way it is. Nintendo needed a head start on the Wii U and it cant be denied. The problem is........the head start should have come current gen. Nintendo has until the next gen release to prove its place in the world or its gonna be tea bagged and run over. Its not to late to say its already happening by the numbers sold. If no word had come to the world about the ps4 or xbox one I guarantee Nintendo would have sold its share, but the new consoles have already been wielding their influence, and believe me its not because the handheld market is infringing its existence upon the world. Its because most people are willing to wait for something worth buying. Go ahead and love your Wii U. The Journalist is stating the obvious. Its in a hot water tub that sits on a smoldering volcano with a date. It will survive but only in the same state of its Wii U appearance at E3. Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy in the background.

@dummpymonkey123 @torreth1 The most irritating fact is that the Wii U could seriously give them a run for their money. It really come down to theme. Even with less power the Wii U could stand quite a chance at stirring up the pot, but only if they are willing to travel deep into rival territory. Nintendo has innovating prowess much more so than the competion but wont expand to all ages and tastes equally.

@dummpymonkey123 @bgna8980 Maybe but $300 is still steep, if the price was $250 and more games are released, I'm sure it would sell well.

@dummpymonkey123 @krystyla @bgna8980 Its not next-gen because even though it's trying to offer games similar to those released on sony and microsoft consoles, its specs limit its capability. It inhibits it from progressing. It is a big step for nintendo exclusives being upscaled in HD but apart from its exclusives there is nothing affiliated with being next-gen here.

@dummpymonkey123 @bgna8980 You have a point but the pricing is already close to the next-gen sony and microsoft consoles, already. There were a couple of reasons the Wii sold well. 1) Innovative 2) Exclusives 3) Price . The original wii had costed $250, and offered an incentive for families to purchase them. A lot of families bought it for Wii Sports, but there isn't much WiiU can offer. It has worse specs than current gen consoles. Which brings to my next point, why does it have the current gen games on it and is a poor port of them. I understand it offers variety but now families won't see the console as something for family and kids to enjoy together and would categorize it along the lines of the current gen games.

@bgna8980 I'm not against a price cut I'm a consumer so anything I can get cheaper I'll buy cheaper but Imo I think a price cut would be detrimental to the console for two reasons people would further think its just an attachment to the old Wii and a price cut would make the statement of hey we aren't a next gen system which consumer would completely discontinue the though of the Wii you all in all
