No Cross-Platform Play for Overwatch in Part Because PC Players Might Have Advantage

"It's really difficult."

Today at BlizzCon 2015, Blizzard confirmed that Overwatch will not support cross-platform play. PC players will only play with other PC players; while players on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will only play against people on those same consoles. Blizzard senior designer Jeremy Craig shared the news in an interview today, explaining that part of the reason for the decision came down to keeping the game fair and balanced.

"It's really difficult," he said about why Overwatch won't support cross-platform play. "From a gameplay standpoint, mouse and keyboard has a little bit of an advantage in terms of being able to spin really quickly. And our game is pretty fast-paced. It just felt like there was a little bit too much of an advantage.

"It just seems like the console crowd is going to love playing against the console people; the PC people will love playing against PC people."

Also in our interview, Craig said there are basically no differences between the PC and console versions of Overwatch. They are "pretty much 1:1," he said.

One major game that does support cross-platform play between PC and console is Street Fighter V, which will allow PC players to fight against PS4 users. The game's beta tests, however, have not gone so well.

Craig also told GameSpot that Overwatch's business model was not locked in from the onset of development. Some thought it would be a free-to-play game like Team Fortress 2. "For me as a developer, it's awesome, because at Blizzard, we have the freedom to make these games what we want them to be and sort of trust that we'll figure out the best way to deliver it to the players," he said.

During a BlizzCon presentation tonight, game director Jeff Kaplan shared even more details about Overwatch. He said the game was planned from day one for consoles. He also said there won't be a Mac version, at least not right away, because doing that is "too challenging." In addition, Kaplan explained that Blizzard hopes to one day add per-hero key-binding for all 21 characters.

On top of that, Kaplan said Blizzard hopes to introduce modding support for Overwatch down the line. This probably won't be in place for launch, but he stressed that, "We absolutely believe in modding." He added that local "split-screen co-op would be awesome," though there are no plans at this moment.

What's more, Kaplan confirmed that the new Overwatch characters announced at BlizzCon earlier today will be released in the beta next week.

Overwatch launches in spring 2016 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4. The game comes to consoles through the Origins Edition, which you can see more of in the video embedded above.

No kidding the Pay To Win PC is going have an advantage...

Video Game Console gamers can't drop $2000 and play on a Ferrari like PC gamers.

PC= IBuyPower

Video Game Consoles is more fair because everybody has the same hardware plus XBOX ONE has dedicated servers...

@megakick: LOL

Would you like to know why I stopped playing CoD?

When CoD2 was released, they removed dedicated servers from the PC game.

And you know what? IT WAS A NIGHTMARE.

It's just really, really pathetic that you think the X1 has something special in dedicated servers, when that's been a baseline requirement for any decent PC shooter since shooters have existed. DOOM 2 had dedicated servers back in the early 90s.

Seriously, youre hilariously sad.

@Richardthe3rd: Wrong.

CoD2 had dedicated servers. You must be referring to CoD MW2. Please do not mix them up.

Yes. CoD 1 and 2 are real games and they were 2 of the best competitive skill based shooters to ever grace the PC.

But please don't call Modern Warfare 2 "CoD2" because it's CoD 6. I only expect better out of you for claiming to be a PC player - if you were playing on PC you should have been playing it since day 1 in 2003 when it came out.

And saying Doom 2 had dedicated servers is a stretch.

@ughz: OH man, I forgot to put the MW on there when that's clearly what I meant. WHAT WILL I DO.

It's pretty funny that you basically dedicated an entire post to deriding that when it's clearly what I meant. Get a life.

Also, yes, Doom 2 had dedicated servers, check out DWANGO which were a privately hosted network of dedicated servers for Doom 2 deathmatch, way back in 1995. They only ran for about a year up until the release of Quake in 1996. Dedicated servers had to be used due to bandwidth constraints, as 56k modems were common.

It's literally one of the first instances of MP shooters online, so I don't really understand how that's a "stretch."

@megakick: Do you have any idea what you're talking about at all, seriously you're embarrassingly ignorant sounding right now, no one said anything about building a PC, and DX is a graphics API, games won't run without it and consoles use graphics APIs as well moron lol, and what does the release of Win95 have to do with anything? you are making absolutely no sense at all, dumbest comment of the year possibly.

@mkeezay22: So easy to troll why are you even on here this is not even a PC gaming site?

Have you ever seen a major PC gaming event? they all use the same PC. so it is fair?

Console everybody is using the same hardware, fair....

Sorry if your decent and you spent to $2000 on PC and you losing to a player with a $500 computer that is pretty sad...

With DirectX and Windows PC are practically video game consoles, Why do you think PC game news is on a video game console site?

Video game cosole platforms covered= 7

PC platforms= 1

Dedicated Servers for video game consoles is a big deal...

Can't you plug a keyboard and Mouse into consoles now?

Hell, the Dreamcast could and way back when the SNES and Genesis had mouse support for a few games.

Oh, shut up. Some PC gamers have advantage over others. The PS4 is receiving an official keyboard and mouse. The xbox one has a controller with extra keybinds. All three platforms have advantages against their fellow players in the same system only if you cough up the money.

It's not "might" - PC players have the advantage, and always will thanks to a mouse. Every single time they have mixed the audiences controller users get destroyed. Gotta keep the console scrubs with their crippled controls from feeling bad.

There is no "might"...a team of skilled mouse/kyb PC gamers will crush a team of skilled console gamepad players.

The only way it could possibly work would be to balance the teams with PC and console gamers.

Mods are fun, but they don't usually fit in well with a competitive multiplayer game.

Odd that the game was designed from the ground up for consoles but they only announced it now.

Good, keep it like that. As a PC gamer, i prefer to play with skilled players like myself rather than a bunch of console noobs who keep aim-assist & auto-aim enabled, yet still think they're skilled. lol

@4kgamer_lmxxx: It's like in Unreal Tournament 3 or whenever when you would have some idiot who plugs in a controller with aim assist on PC and thinks he's skilled. Console first person shooters are really only worth the single player experience in my opinion, multiplayer pretty much plays itself with a console controller.

I honestly don't see why they cant at least just try it out and let us see the end result. Plus if Cross-platform play was possible, We can give feedback of what is going on in the game. for example, If PC players are moving much faster than console players, blizzard can just adjust the movement speed for console players to match PC or vise versa. If PC people aim faster than have Console players aim just as fast or lower the speed for aiming and etc. on PC to match console or vise versa...

I really feel that Cross platform play is possible with all game Genre's ( FPS, RPG and others) I just feel like Developers are just to lazy to get it right.. my opinion of course.

@jako998: I see you have no idea why there is and never will be a crossplatform shooter between consoles and PC. It isn't about movement speed or aiming speed. First one is the same, and the second you can adjust by making mouse or thumb stick more responsive. The difference is precision. Mouse will always obliterate gamepad when it comes to precise shooting. While we move with the same speed, we can more easily maintain reticle on a target while strafing and jumping. While we can aim with the same speed, we can stop on target faster and with more precision, and we can maintain lock on target without much effort.

There is no way to make the playing field equal, without forbidding from using mouse, or giving console players huge aimbot boost. Both of those would be unfair, and that's why there will never be cross platform shooters.

@JehutyReborn: I see that you aren't very learned, because you are wrong in your VERY FIRST sentence. 'Shadowrun' for xbox 360 was an FPS that allowed console games to play PC gamers, and it wasn't that big a difference in skill level. That may have been because the developer made it so that you could only make a character turn at a certain speed because they wanted at least some realism in their shooter. This alone would put console players on a very level playing field in comparison to PC gamers, though PC gamers would still have an aiming advantage. As for frame rate I don't see why pc gamers couldnt run at high framerates and consoles could just run their 60@1080

@theantikarma: you just used what is largely considered one of the worst FPS games from laSt gen as an example this game should follow? Really?

The only way shadowrun achieved parity was by removing targeting reticules for PC players, giving console players aim assists, and severely restricting PC players movements. It was largely hated by PC players because of this and was further evidence of how inferior controllers are for FPS games.

It was still hugely one sided in PC gamers favor.

Why play a gimped version of this game when you don't have to?

Pasically, you're asking Blizzard to hold PC players back so they're easier for console jockeys to punch.

Final fantasy XIV online works well for PC and PS4 and even PS3 players to play together, so why shouldn't this?

FF XIV also has pvp elements in it as well, so you can play your best with your system of choice!

@Simba13: Because it's a shooter, not MMORPG. Mouse rekts pad, and that would cause major butthurt from console players, which would lead to rage quitting even before match would start. After a month, it would look like there is no crossplay at all, except maybe some single suicide console players with overgrown ego, who would try (and fail) to take on PC players.

They did this because many, many, many console players with modded mouse and keyboard will riot for losing their advantages over gamepad losers.
