No Cross-Platform Play for Overwatch in Part Because PC Players Might Have Advantage

"It's really difficult."

Today at BlizzCon 2015, Blizzard confirmed that Overwatch will not support cross-platform play. PC players will only play with other PC players; while players on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will only play against people on those same consoles. Blizzard senior designer Jeremy Craig shared the news in an interview today, explaining that part of the reason for the decision came down to keeping the game fair and balanced.

"It's really difficult," he said about why Overwatch won't support cross-platform play. "From a gameplay standpoint, mouse and keyboard has a little bit of an advantage in terms of being able to spin really quickly. And our game is pretty fast-paced. It just felt like there was a little bit too much of an advantage.

"It just seems like the console crowd is going to love playing against the console people; the PC people will love playing against PC people."

Also in our interview, Craig said there are basically no differences between the PC and console versions of Overwatch. They are "pretty much 1:1," he said.

One major game that does support cross-platform play between PC and console is Street Fighter V, which will allow PC players to fight against PS4 users. The game's beta tests, however, have not gone so well.

Craig also told GameSpot that Overwatch's business model was not locked in from the onset of development. Some thought it would be a free-to-play game like Team Fortress 2. "For me as a developer, it's awesome, because at Blizzard, we have the freedom to make these games what we want them to be and sort of trust that we'll figure out the best way to deliver it to the players," he said.

During a BlizzCon presentation tonight, game director Jeff Kaplan shared even more details about Overwatch. He said the game was planned from day one for consoles. He also said there won't be a Mac version, at least not right away, because doing that is "too challenging." In addition, Kaplan explained that Blizzard hopes to one day add per-hero key-binding for all 21 characters.

On top of that, Kaplan said Blizzard hopes to introduce modding support for Overwatch down the line. This probably won't be in place for launch, but he stressed that, "We absolutely believe in modding." He added that local "split-screen co-op would be awesome," though there are no plans at this moment.

What's more, Kaplan confirmed that the new Overwatch characters announced at BlizzCon earlier today will be released in the beta next week.

Overwatch launches in spring 2016 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4. The game comes to consoles through the Origins Edition, which you can see more of in the video embedded above.

Is a good call.

Last thing we want are any of these thumb twiddling console jockeys to realize how absolutely terrible they are. I sure as hell don't want them on my team.

This way they can keep their heads in the sand and Sony and m $ can keep convincing them they're all special little flowers.

@trallisit: It's not really debatable unless you are being pointlessly, stubbornly pedantic about it. You don't need to bring the nature of reality and how we perceive it into this, lol.

@ughz:I am not arguing either way, just saying that some people may see things differently is all, no need for name calling, lol. While I do agree that people arguing water isn't wet is simply arguing semantics, things are not all ways clear cut to everyone.

they have an advantage when they decree that console gamers can not have aim assist becuase it's "unfair" and scream PCMASTERRACE KEYBOARD AND MOUSE IS BETTER when crossplay is denied.... but when you are given a GOOD console fps gamer with aim assist vs a pc gamer without aim assist there is very little difference in ability.

@jtb_pred: First off your wrong, even with aim assist a console controller never comes close to a mouse and keyboard. Second, just think about how stupid that argument is to begin with, "oh with a handicap we can almost be as good a mouse, what's the problem?"

@jtb_pred: so let me get this straight; you think consoles would be fine competing with PCs so long as developers program in training wheels to "help" them?

I mean, we're you serious when you typed that? "Hey man, I can beat you on console because it aims for me! "

Come to terms with the fact that playing shooters on console is the gaming equivalent of living like a neanderthal. In order to play at a level of efficiency, you need "help" and assists.

Just lol.

Advantage? Nonsense poopy-pants! It is simply the better gaming experience that gives you the edge you need.

Put your faith in the light!

Consoles have been compatible with keyboards and mice since at least the PS2 era. You just have to program the game to make use of them. This logic hasn't been legitimate for close to 15 years except as an excuse for lazy programming.

@somberfox: But almost no one uses M&K for consoles. Programming a console game to make use of M&K would that the vast majority of console players would still get owned by PC players on crossplay *and* by the select few console gamers that use M&K. Overall, console players would be less happy with the result.

@somberfox: change that word "logic" and switch it with "comment" and that sums it up a bit better. You honestly think the majority of the people who would play this on console would have and be willing to use a m&kb over the controller? LoL? please just stop...

@somberfox: Most of them require a certain mouse or adapter and most people don't use them, a very small percentage. Is it worth every single person who uses a console controller getting destroyed in every game by every PC player for that small number of people?

@mattklanks: nope, standard usb, no adapters needed, controls are simply toggled by dev un game. Ps2, ps3, ps4 support it out of the box.

@razor_rj: Even with autoaim, PC players wouldn't be at a disadvantage.

You need to understand how PC FPS work with a mouse. The mouse simply doesn't even exist for the gamer, unless you are using something bad. For good players, which is pretty much everyone in FPSes on PC, it's an extension of your body. You aim without thinking because you know the mouse is going to go exactly where you told it to - with no conscious thought.

Even with autoaim, you're going to get wrekt 9 times out of 10.

@razor_rj: You can plug in a controller, but it will never be as good as a mouse unless it basically uses an aimbot. If consoles can use mouse and keyboard it's no problem right? Except no console users do for whatever retarded reason or another, more often than not they don't seem to work that well from what I've heard.

'Might' have the advantage? It's a given that from an efficiency standpoint shooters play far better with mouse and keyboard. This has been established many years ago after a failed attempt when they tried to make a game that had crossover gameplay between consoles and PC.

The PC gamers blew everyone away simply because a mouse offers far better pinpoint and swift accuracy. It's amazing the industry still keeps trying to tinker with something that is in effect unfixable. Until console gamers consider a mouse and keyboard standard equipment, thus effectively turning their consoles in light PCs (oh irony there :)), making any attempt to connect console and PC communities to an ingame situation is just going to fail.

I don't even like playing PC games online on PC because there will always be someone running it on more powerful hardware than you have giving them an edge.

It is one of the benefits I feel of consoles and their static hardware. You know all fights are fought on a level playing field. Give or take some TV differences and internet speed. How proper competitions should be.

Mouse is more precise than sticks but I've played most on controllers. I have almost no muscle memory for games on PC. Drives me insane so I normally default to a controller whenever possible. Like learning to drive a car with the pedals the opposite way around. Get used to it eventually I guess but damn it is annoying.

@dexda: Then you need to turn your settings down.

It's the only solution that doesn't involve spending money. The reality is having quad 980tis and junk doesn't give you an advantage. Sure, there's the fact that you'll get a bit higher framerate, but you still have to deal with the same netcode and its lag as everyone else. You still have people who are simply better.

You can't buy skill.

@ughz: Can't turn my settings down because I don't even have a PC that can play games any more and since that is a laptop anyway it is not upgradable. I had a PC that could play games at a reasonable level but it has turned to stone now and I have no desire to upgrade.

I've got a PS4 so I'm sorted for the rest of this gen.

I get what you are saying, put an unskilled person on a powerful PC won't make them any better. A person with the skill to put the hardware to good use though will have an advantage.

Better hardware does give you an advantage. Being able to have your resolution higher than average and 120fps allows for much more precise and accurate gameplay. Even hit boxes will be different.

Yes you still have to deal with internet issues, which is my issue. On console you have to deal with that crap as well but on PC you also have to deal with the mismatch in hardware and the fact you need to tweak your graphics to get optimum FPS, it is just a massive hassle.

Just can't be arsed with it. All I want to do is plop down and play some games. Not sit messing with graphics settings for 20 minutes just so the connection lag can cripple my experience instead.

You console gamers desperately need to educate yourselfs. Thats sad

@djschaum5201: Yes it does. Having higher resolution and 120fps makes a difference.

Sure it won't make a terrible gamer better but someone with the skill to take advantage of it will get an advantage over someone struggling to run the game at 720p and 30fps.

At least on consoles EVERYONE is struggling to run the game at 720p and 30fps equally.

@mattklanks: I meant it was a factor not the EXACT reason every time you die.

All I meant was that having better quality games will give you an edge over someone who is playing on a screen that looks like there is mud smeared on it.

You PC fans are also always banging on about how necessary 1080p is. How it isn't even that impressive any more and 4K is pretty much here. Why even bother upgrading to 2K or 4K at all if it doesn't offer better gameplay?

Higher pixel density means more clarity and much better visuals particularly at long distance. So snipers will have an advantage at 4K over 1080p as one example. Higher fps will make everything smoother and more precise as another example.

You might think 1080p 30fps is fine but I bet if you went 4K 120fps for a short time and got used to it you'd never be able to play at 1080p 30fps again. Why? Because it is simply better.

Though to be fair having a better rig which can include a monitor that supports above 60hz that can most definitely give you an advantage even if it is only a slight one.
