No Cross-Platform Play for Overwatch in Part Because PC Players Might Have Advantage

"It's really difficult."

Today at BlizzCon 2015, Blizzard confirmed that Overwatch will not support cross-platform play. PC players will only play with other PC players; while players on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will only play against people on those same consoles. Blizzard senior designer Jeremy Craig shared the news in an interview today, explaining that part of the reason for the decision came down to keeping the game fair and balanced.

"It's really difficult," he said about why Overwatch won't support cross-platform play. "From a gameplay standpoint, mouse and keyboard has a little bit of an advantage in terms of being able to spin really quickly. And our game is pretty fast-paced. It just felt like there was a little bit too much of an advantage.

"It just seems like the console crowd is going to love playing against the console people; the PC people will love playing against PC people."

Also in our interview, Craig said there are basically no differences between the PC and console versions of Overwatch. They are "pretty much 1:1," he said.

One major game that does support cross-platform play between PC and console is Street Fighter V, which will allow PC players to fight against PS4 users. The game's beta tests, however, have not gone so well.

Craig also told GameSpot that Overwatch's business model was not locked in from the onset of development. Some thought it would be a free-to-play game like Team Fortress 2. "For me as a developer, it's awesome, because at Blizzard, we have the freedom to make these games what we want them to be and sort of trust that we'll figure out the best way to deliver it to the players," he said.

During a BlizzCon presentation tonight, game director Jeff Kaplan shared even more details about Overwatch. He said the game was planned from day one for consoles. He also said there won't be a Mac version, at least not right away, because doing that is "too challenging." In addition, Kaplan explained that Blizzard hopes to one day add per-hero key-binding for all 21 characters.

On top of that, Kaplan said Blizzard hopes to introduce modding support for Overwatch down the line. This probably won't be in place for launch, but he stressed that, "We absolutely believe in modding." He added that local "split-screen co-op would be awesome," though there are no plans at this moment.

What's more, Kaplan confirmed that the new Overwatch characters announced at BlizzCon earlier today will be released in the beta next week.

Overwatch launches in spring 2016 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4. The game comes to consoles through the Origins Edition, which you can see more of in the video embedded above.

wow that is good news for me! LOL i liked this game but did not buy it because it was also released on pc.. I thought that I would really be at a disadvantage because of how fast the mouse can make ur character rotate compared to consoles in which it really is hard to control specially in fps games.. nice imma buy overwatch NOW!

Aiming is better on mouse and keyboard, that is easily true. However, movement with an analog stick is more precise, and movement is a big part of aiming. Keyboard and mouse is such an unbalanced way of playing shooters. Sure, the mouse is better than your right analog stick, but the keyboard is worse than the left analog stick.

@aeygamer2: Movement is a much bigger part of aiming on console than pc. "Walking the crosshair onto the target" is a console phenomenon. Good pc gamers rather run in the opposite direction or any direction while sometimes jumping depending on the game to confuse as much as possible, all while aiming with the mouse compensating both for their own movement and the targets movement. That is how precise and fast aiming with a mouse is.

All they need in terms of movement is run at max speed forward, backwards and strafe left and right. It works just as well as on console to combine directions to run diagonally. In a pc dogfight the movement is only to avoid getting shot, not for the actual aiming.

The added control to movement you speak of on a controller is only that there is a progressive increase in speed with a analog stick, while there is only one speed on keyboard (unless you press an additional button to intentionally "walk" wich most likely isn't even bound to a key in a fps game on pc as there is no instance whatsoever you would want to walk). That progressive speed is completely useless for a shooter and does not make up even the slightest for the superior turnspeed, variable sensitivity and fast aiming of a mouse.

@kadaverhagga: I play both console and PC. From an objective standpoint, having the option to move at variable speed and more than octodirectional movement with an analog stick is an advantage over the keyboard, it's not completely useless. Just as the mouse is an advantage over the analog stick at rotating. I feel like I just said the same thing twice. Try using something besides your opinion to support your statements.

@aeygamer2: How about the argument that trials between m&k vs controllers in games like shadow warrior still had pc gamers come out on top despite having artificial drawbacks, or the fact that time and time again devs come to the same conclusion that it is an advantage, or the fact that most console gamers themselves would not be wanted to be matched against m&k players because they find it unfair. I believe my "opinion" supports the consesus of what the "truth" is more than your opinion on movement. Just saying.

@kadaverhagga: I simply pointed out the specific advantages and drawbacks to each, without claiming that one was overall better than the other. I am not exactly sure who you are arguing with. They say assumptions make asses out of people. Thanks for making the assumption that my overall opinion was the opposite of what I think. Also, I have never even heard of shadow warrior. While my opinion is I am sure PC players have the inherent advantage in games, considering games are made on PCs. I just raise the doubt of the ubiquity of said advantage.

@aeygamer2: Sorry I meant Shadowrun (although shadow warrior are also games that exist). It was the only shooter game with crossplay between console and pc. Needless to say it didn't work well at all. The devs tried to help console gamers with increased aim assist and removal of recoil and handicap pc players with larger spread, completely crippled aim if you move and heavier recoil effects to even the playing field and remove some of the advantage of faster aim and turnspeed. Still was unsuccesful to even the playing field but it capped the fun and skill of those using m&k. So it ruined the experience for both groups and there was really no benefit.
Microsoft also did internal trials between console and pc players but it didn't do well, I quote

"Voodoo President Rahul Sood discussed a Microsoft project that "[...]was designed to allow console gamers and PC gamers to interact and battle over a connected environment." During the testing, extremely talented console gamers were pitted against "mediocre" PC gamers in what appears to be some type of shooter. The Xbox gamers used their 360 controllers and the PC gamers used the traditional mouse/keyboard combo. The results?

"The console players got destroyed every time. So much so that it would be embarrassing to the XBOX team in general had Microsoft launched this initiative.""

It was later reveal the games were Unreal Tournament and a "Gears of war game".

Unreal Tournament I'm not surprised at all, it is an old school type pc shooter and way to fast in gameplay to even have controllers viable as an option against m&k. Gears though surprised me as it really isn't that fast and is a cover shooter so it shouldn't benefit m&k so much. Although we don't know what kind of gears game it was, could have been an experimental fps gears title or something that isn't anything like what we have seen released at all.

You can make it cross play and be fair at the same time. Just add an option for cross platform play in the game and warn players that they should connect a keyboard & mouse to the console when they select it, so they're on even footing. This way you could have keyboard/mouse exclusive matches on PS4 with PC cross play. And everyone's happy :)

@alexmarx: Well a start would be for Sony and MS to add support for m&k before introducing crossplay between pc and consoles for a shooter.

@kadaverhagga: Keyboard and mouse are supported on the PS4. I can play Paragon with k&m on PS4 for example, a game similar to Overwatch. Also, according to Microsoft, keyboard and mouse support is coming soon to the xbox as well.

@alexmarx: But it's not really there yet. It's like one game and talk about adding it. But I'd definately not say Paragon is similar to overwatch at all. Paragon uses skills with wide hitboxes/area of effect and is very slow compared to overwatch. You don't really need fast precision on the same level.

But still don't you think alot of console gamers would be against being matched against k&m players for a game such as overwatch?

@kadaverhagga:There's also War Thunder and FF14 with keyboard and mouse support on PS4. Who knows, maybe we'll start seeing more strategy games for the PS4 soon.

As for console gamers and k&m, read the reddit link in my first comment, k&m games would be separate and could potentially cross play with PC and xbox players that use k&m.

@alexmarx: Well yes if it can be easily solved with seperate lobbies that would be a whole different ballgame. I mean I don't think console gamers wanting to use gamepads will want to be pitted against m&k players in a shooter or strategy game.

I'll be super hesitant to get another competitive online shooter for PC after experiencing the barren wasteland that is the Titanfall matchmaking. Hopefully the lack of paid maps will keep a decent player base for Overwatch. For now it's all Counterstrike all the time.

@placksheep: I have beta access to this game but I'm more of a cs go , r6 guy, so not that into it. But if you are worried about number of people playing this game, bugs, or similar issues that I've delt with on r6 siege, you don't have to worry about that coming from blizzard. On launch day and the week following they may have some issues with their server handling demand, but they are one of the few companies I trust in delivering a solid product. The game being a preference of yours is another story.

I played Farcry 3 for PC online when it launched, and I was using my 360 controller. I finished every match with over 20 kills and less than 10 deaths. Dont tell me Keyboard and mouse is better, its all about what you're good with. I played Counter strike for years with a keyboard mouse, I played CoD with a Keyboard and mouse. Now I play with a gamepad. I like it better. I like Battlefield better with gamepad, Halo, CoD, All of em.

@Gojomez: Like the other guy said, kudos if you are that good with a controller to match avarage joes on pc. Still m&k IS better for shooters, that is a proven fact. So even if it isn't for you, for the vast majority of xbox and ps4 players it would be a massive disadvantage if they were pitted against pc players and it would ruin their experience. Hence why devs take decisions like this.

Keyboard and mouse is more precise. This is not debatable, it's fact. You cannot move the camera or change direction as quickly, so you will always be handicapped. We're happy for you that you can enjoy competitive online shooters on PC with thumb sticks. Kudos.

*will have advantage.

You'd expect Blizzard to know that, considering they've been a PC developer for over 20 years. Whether they made FPS or not.

That would be like saying it's okay for crossplay between PC users and PS1 users, if it were possible, on Starcraft. You're going to get zerged and spammed with battlecruisers by the PC players before you even have a marine.

They would have pylons in your base before you even had your base in your base.

Unfortunately it is true because it be nice to play with people who play with console only. The fun teasing them as you kill them over and over again until they turn to cheating just to finally beat you. As a gamer I will play any platform that has good games but unlike some people I know what platform is the best and wont get deluded and limit myself to just one platform.

@arrowhead927: Warthunder, well duh, also WOT would work in crossplay between pc and console. There is an artificial max limit in turnspeed (f ex a turrents rotation speed, or a planes turn radius) wich takes away any advantage mouse has.

Same thing with fighters, a keyboard is actually worse for fighting games but on pc you have the option to use any input device, and the best you can have for fighters are fightsticks (although it is only a slight advantage over a normal controller), wich are also available for console players so in that case it is fair. Alot of games work fine in crossplay between pc and console.

With this fast paced game you can turn and aim on a dime wich is where the biggest advantage for pc gamers comes in.

Only in two genres really, shooters and strategy games is it a much bigger advantage for pc gamers with m&k. For shooters due to the much quicker and nimbler aiming and rotational speed along with variable sensitivity on the fly with modern gaming mice.

For strategy games due to the easier and faster micromanagement of units and commands + the vast possibility of hotkeyes and macros on the keyboard.

@arrowhead927: It's not like a plane can turn 360° in less than a second, or turn at high speeds, the analog stick does alright with the physics of turning a plane right, left, up, down, etc. but when you can turn around and have better accuracy with a mouse rather than a stick in a controller, well then there's some trouble to balance things there, I remember that I played BF3 a lot on the pc some day I went to a friend house and he had it on ps3 and it's not like I had never played on a controller I had and a lot also, I tried to play BD3 on the playstation and boy I felt like a robot I didn't have that accuracy anymore and I knew that even If I give it tons of hours of gameplay to master the scheme I wouldn't reach the reactions, times, and accuracy of using a mouse, in this terms console players would be in a disavantage against pc players and I kinda don't fear that this would dimish the player base on any of the plattforms.

If they ever make consoles cross play with pc in any game i will stop playing on consoles.

The reason im playing on consoles multiplayer games is because of hackers that ruin every pc game.

I used to play call of duty on pc then i moved to xbox one.

Hackers on pc ruined the game and it's not the only game they ruin.

In consoles they eat their sh1t in their mouths

@repalioaderfes: Shadowrun was cross play between 360 and PC all the way back in 2007. The results were that PC players regularly dominated despite all the advantages they tried to give 360 players to balance it. For example, they got aim assist, PC didn't. They also gave PC players drastically worse weapon spreads. Didn't help. Microsoft hasn't tried it again since as far as I know.

@eagleeye007: Yeah, using a mouse and keyboard is always more accurate than using a controller, I have PC playing family members and friends who can attest to that. Why the need to make games cross-platform anyway? I'm in no rush to go up against someone I know has the clear advantage, that's how controllers get broken. ;)

Horse shit.... ps4 support mouse/kb since day 1....

Now where is the controller advantage?

Also, fyi gamers, kb/mouse is an advantage, it does not mean you are mote skilled but actually less so since it takes significantly less effort. As for aim assist, nobody who plays competatively uses it, as it actually hurts their shooting. Only people new to gaming, and the clueless say otherwise.

Real reason:MSFT legal clauses and policies. Either it's with them only or nobody.

@Mirimon78: You're an idiot, if everyone is playing with a mouse and keyboard there is no handicap, unlike console controllers with auto aim assist which is built into console shooters, saying you turn it off, which isn't even an option in most console games makes you look like someone who has never even picked up a video game. Console gamers need to realize when they have no idea what they're talking about. Try actually playing a shooter with a mouse sometime and come back to me with your k/d ratio, probably won't be as impressive as in call of duty.
