Microsoft E3 2017: Xbox One X Is A Great Value At $500, Exec Says

"That value proposition is great."

One of the biggest talking points around the Xbox One X this week has been its $500 price. That's higher than some, including a number of analysts, thought it would be. It is the most powerful console ever made, and Microsoft never backed away from saying it would have a premium price point, but still, some are feeling sticker shock given it's $100 more than PS4 Pro. Now, Xbox engineering lead Mike Ybarra has weighed in, saying $500 is an excellent value.

Speaking to TechRadar, Ybarra the Xbox ecosystem is all about giving people options. "We're all about choice," he said, pointing to the Xbox One S as a more than capable console that is available at a relatively affordable price point, starting at $250 right now.

The Xbox One X, meanwhile, is aimed at the "high-end gamer," and it has a price point that reflects that. "If you're a high-end gamer and you want the absolute best experience possible there's no place you'll find a better performance to price ratio than Xbox One X," he said. "True 4K, all the features you saw in the briefing at $499, that value proposition is great."

Further up the ladder in terms of performance--and price--is the PC market. "If you're on PC you're going to be about $1500 or so, so that's another area," Ybarra said. "We love Windows gaming. A lot of our games, almost 20 of them in the show, are going to be on Windows too."

"So that's the point that I love to say, 'What kind of gamer are you?' and let you decide what's best for you."

GameSpot spoke with Microsoft this week about the console's $500 price point, and the company believes no other console out there is doing what Xbox One X does. The Xbox One X launches on November 7. In other news, Microsoft has released a video in which an Xbox engineer assembles the console piece by piece--it's pretty cool to watch. It's a great value, I'm sure.

But for a few hundred more you can build a computer that would crush it (Yes, I would opt to play games at 1080p/60fps with high detail settings rather than some checker-boarded, corner-cutting, poor-man's 4K at 30fps).

If you're serious about gaming you should have a decent PC anyway.

@pyro1245: Define "a few hundred". You can't buy an off the shelf gaming pc that looks anything near as good as this for under 1300 bucks with the same features. In fact I don't think there is a preassembled pc that has a uhd player, hdmi in, ir blaster as well as Bluetooth and WiFi built in with similar specs.

Even assembling it yourself would put you close to 1000 bucks and it would still look and sound like a pc.

Thanks, but - again - no thanks.

@sealionact@nativepixel: Nah I put together a small form factor PC in a Fractal Node 202 with GTX 1060 and i3-6100 that absolutely destroys 1080p gaming on pretty much Ultra settings at 60fps for about $750. It's got wifi and bluetooth, works with all major controllers and more.

It all just comes down to how much effort you want to put in to what I can only assume is a major hobby based on your participation on this website.

I still understand the appeal of consoles... I'm just saying...... With a little extra effort you can do a lot of cool things. I still think Steam is a better social platform than any of the consoles as well. I think it's totally worth it. I understand others may not.

@pyro1245: you still left out the 4k player that the x1x comes with as well as the controller it comes with. that's for some, a couple hundred dollar value right there that your pc doesn't have.

@iconr6racer: Meh. I'd just grab an X1S if disc based media was still relevant to me. That case I used doesn't even support 5.25" drives. As it is, though, it's perfect for me. Gaming/media consumption is not one-size-fits-all. If it were there wouldn't be 2-3 consoles and a myriad of gaming PCs to chose from.

So the X1X actually has stuff I don't need, while being less powerful than I'd like. Gaming is a big hobby for me so I can be picky.

@pyro1245: right, to you! point is many people value that stuff you don't want or need. can't just ignore all the x1x has to offer just because you may not want it. The x1x is priced under what most people expected it to be priced at just a handful of months ago. 600+ was most peoples guesses when the specs were announced. sony cut corners like using the same amnt of ram and no 4k player never mind the much weaker gpu to hit its 400 price point. ms didn't cut corners. i respect that.

@trolleyproblem: I probably do about the same. If I'm really into a game maybe more.

Plus I do a lot of productivity stuff which benefits from having a decent rig that can drive multiple displays, so there's some overlap there. I have my main rig upstairs in my room and the HTPC hooked up to the TV downstairs.

Targeting high end gamers? Those would be on PC already, especially with all of the X1 library on it.

LOL at people saying you wont be able to build a comparable PC for that price. You wont be able to do even half the things you can do on a PC either. You aren't getting much for your money buying a $500 machine that plays games a little bit better than the PS4 already does ...ahh well, each to their own.

@pelvist: Another day, another person who thinks they can match the 1x by spending the same on a pc.

Go ahead. Match the components and performance for 500 bucks. I challenge you.

I must be stupid. Still looks to me like you're saying that you can build a comparable pc for 500 bucks.

Maybe that's not what you meant. Then again maybe you're just a salty troll.

@sealionact: A salty troll huh? /rolleyes

You're defending the honor of your favorite toy whenever some says something -not positive- about it; "stop not liking what I like!" ...A little hypocritical of you to call other people a salty troll now isn't it Simon?

@sealionact: Still don't see it do you? Let me help you:

Nowhere did I claim you could build a comparable PC for the same price, I merely pointed out that I laughed at the comments from the XBOX defence force using that excuse to justify spending £500 on something that will do much LESS than a PC for the same price. So keep on waiting, you aren't in any position to demand anything from me.

Now on the subject of waiting ...don't expect me to wait for your next juvenile response, and when you do leave it, I wouldn't bother waiting for a reply.

Awkward.

It may game at a "true" 4k but it does not have the power to run all details ultra etc.. 16xAA , Much better at at 1440p will max details.

I've tried gaming in 4k with max details and it can even drag a 9 teraflop gpu down that has 8gigs of dedicated video ram let alone 16 gigs of DDR4 system memory.

That being said what I like about the XBOX X is thats it's pushing the bar for consoles and the price point is fair for what your getting imho.

I love graphics and 4k and all but I'm more of a frame rate person if all or most my games can be locked at 60fps with the x1x, I'll get one most defo.

Considering Switch is $300 and it has neither hardware power nor games...

... And not even a proper controller in the package.

@TashunkoSapa: $300 seems to be the magic price for most people. Publishers still don't seem to understand that consoles aren't like cellphones. Phones are considered a necessity for most people.

@TashunkoSapa: crazy yet it has probably the best game to come out this gem, and definetely better than any 1st party exclusive to release on X1...but alas it does need more content.

@bmoreninja777: It has the best game to come out last gen you mean. It's a Wii U game after all. And it struggles hard to run that. A last gen game. Which does not bode well for the system's performance going forward.

@lostn: last time i checked it came out this year, primarily on Nintendos next gen console it was marketed on that console as well. I have the game on my switch and youd be hard pressed to find anything on ylur so called next gen X1 that runs or looks better...for a so called last gen title.
