Metal Gear Solid Actor David Hayter -- "I've Got No Particular Love for Kojima"

"The whole thing could have been handled better and a little more respectfully, but I'm not going to cry about it."

The voice of Snake in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was performed by 24 actor Kiefer Sutherland, not series veteran David Hayter. Now, Hayter has spoken up about why he was not involved with the project and explained that he has no intention to ever work with series creator Hideo Kojima again.

Regarding why he wasn't involved with The Phantom Pain, Hayter told Game Informer that he bumped into a producer for the game at a recording studio and was told Konami was going in a different direction. "That was basically it," Hayter said. He then spoke with Metal Gear English casting director Kris Zimmerman, who reportedly told him, "'We're going forward, but it looks like they are going to try and replace you.' They tried to do that before, and it never worked. They tried to get voice matches, and it never happened."

No Caption Provided

Hayter further explained that the writing had been on the wall. There was apparently some amount of friction brewing between Hayter and Kojima, with the game designer hoping to find a different actor to perform the lead role, though it's unclear why.

"I had to re-audition for Metal Gear 3 to play Naked Snake," Hayter said. "They made me re-audition to play Old Snake, and the whole time, they were trying to find somebody else to do it. I heard that Kojima asked one of the producers on Metal Gear 3 to ask Kurt Russell if he would take over for that game. He didn't want to do it."

Hayter goes on to say that he cherishes the time he spent working on the Metal Gear Solid series, though he wishes his professional involvement with the series could have ended better.

"I don't have any ill will toward Kiefer Sutherland or anything like that," he said. "The whole thing could have been handled better and a little more respectfully, but I'm not going to cry about it."

Finally, he says he hasn't played The Phantom Pain ("that'll be 60 hours of humiliation") and that a future partnership with Kojima is unlikely to happen. "I've got no particular love for Kojima. I don't feel any need to go back and work with him again."

In 2013, before the launch of The Phantom Pain, Hayter said Konami never asked him to work on the game and never told him why he was passed over.

"If it were my choice, I would do this role forever," Hayter said at the time about Snake. "To hear anyone else's voice coming from Snake's battered throat, makes me a little ill, to be honest."

Wow. Someone is bitter.

Let's face it, as iconic as the voice was, I don't think he spoke in a natural sounding voice. I feel he overacted. No one speaks like that. I really think someone else would have done a better job all those years.

Not saying that that person is Kiefer Sutherland mind you.

I think James McAffery (Max Payne) would have been a good Solid Snake. He can be edgy and gritty, and just the way I imagined snake would be.

@lostn: In a game about cyborgs, giant mecha WMDs, clones, people who can control bees/fire/your mind, and the only thing you find unnatural is his voice acting.... That game was never meant to be taken literally or "naturally" and his voice acting was great.

@Pwnslaught: Lord of the Rings is also mostly fantasy, that doesn't stop it from having an air of maturity and seriousness. MGS is an epic with moral messages of anti-war and anti-terrorism. For those that seek it, it provides intellectual stimulation, but it entertains the masses at the same time since Kojima deliberately gave it a dose of unique insanity.

I get it, but I don't think David needs to be hung up on it. His career is bigger than just the voice of Solid Snake. I'd say that now is a good time for him to move on. The MGS boat has sailed in most respects.

I always felt David Hayter is solid snake and solid snake without David Hayter is not solid snake. I still do feel like that, he was the voice of a legendary character. All of you bitching and complaining about David Hayter saying this that, should be ashamed and if anything you all should be in his side with all of this. Kiefer did a ok job with solid snake but that is to be expected he's not the real voice of solid snake and his not David Hayter. He's trying to fill the shoes of a voice that we all love for all this years and is not gonna be an easy thing for anyone to do.

He didn't miss much in the new game anyway. BB was a friggen mute with no emotion for the most part. I was actually happy Keifer was voicing BB but the way he was written made it a disappointment.

""The whole thing could have been handled better and a little more respectfully, but I'm not going to cry about it."

Except the last year's worth of his twitter account has been passive aggressive grumbling about losing the VA job.

Considering voice acting was very much a side project hobby job, it's surprising he took it so personally. It's not like he's been blacklisted from screenwriting, his actual job.

for all the stink people made about this game, it really lacked in many ways with some very irrational gameplay oddities. Though I did find the story imaginative, if not somewhat drugged induced...

Kojima has a bad rep with the American VA and translators. I guess love didn't really bloom on the battlefield.

The little known truth? (MGS, VA, & translation)

I have nothing but love for David Hayter. The man, in my eyes (and many fans' eyes) is the true voice of Snake. Kojima is a genius, but I think he's a bit too infatuated with Hollywood celebrities, which is why he wanted Kurt Russell and Keifer Sutherland to play Snake. Hayter said it makes him sick to hear someone else play Snake, and | personally share that feeling. Snake in MGS5 just didn't do it for me, and that's a damn shame.

@ketsuhige: Kurt Russel would have been a nod to Escape from LA which is where Konami got his inspiration from for MGS. I mean look at Kurt.. his character... Snake Plissken. That's where the name came from.

The eye patch? That's Big Boss.

Snake in MGS2 called himself Iroquois Plissken when introducing himself to Raiden. For the rest of the game he was called Plisskin.

Kojima was a huge fan of Escape from LA and almost got sued for ripping it off (the director of the movie told the studio not to sue him). To get Kurt Russel to play Big Boss would have been a homage to Kojima's favorite movie, and would have been a dream come true for him to play basically the same character he played in that movie.

@lostn: I've watched Escape from LA so I know the whole Plissken origin (thank God Kojima didn't make Snake wear leather pants like Kurt Russell did in EFLA in that one scene). I'm saying Kojima wants to be more Hollywood. Just think about his recent endeavours before he left Konami: Guillermo Del Toro, Norman Reedus, Kiefer Sutherland, Kurt Russell, people that would make him feel like he's working in Hollywood.

While I can see many, including myself, are not happy with the game and the new approach taken for the series, MGSV is still getting super positive reviews and appreciates from game reviewers and casual gamers. In fact, what bothers me the most is that nobody cares about what people say in comment sections such as this one. In other words, our voice will not be heard by anyone and it is us talking and exchanging views among ourselves, which is a pity.

I can hear people talking about The Division being so repetitive and boring, and that it does not deserve the tribute paid by reviewers; yet its sales have gone through the roof and I still hear people like Greg Miller calling the game "fantastic".I understand that it's a matter of personal preferences to find a game either "fantastic'' or ''monotonous''; but when you know that your voice will be heard by many, and that the words you use may affect people's choices and as a result the future of game developing (high sale rates of a bad yet wrongly appreciated game results in other developers taking the same approach for their upcoming games), I think it's wise to be a little bit more careful about what you say.

Well the game sucked, especially the unfinished story. Some good gameplay mechanics but a very uninteresting and lifeless open world. And some really boring missions. And Snake barely speaks anyways. I did not see anything in the MGSV Snake that Hayter could not have done just as well. Where they not going to have some amazing facial capture or something that somehow Hayter could not do, and thus they needed some higher ranked Hollywood actor to convey the emotion needed to reflect his state of mind? Well I can't remember any moments where there where any special scenes from Snake in MGSV that showed much character and emotion. He was the most boring character in the game imo. Most of his involvement in the story was standing in the background with that stupid confused look on his face while someone else was talking.

And just to be clear, I am not saying that Keifer did a bad job as Snake, but Snake in the game was lame and there was no real reason to change the actor. I felt more emotion and character from Snake in MGS4 than I ever did with Snake in MGSV.

I can certainly feel with Hayter. It was an ugly way to end things by Kojima and Konami respectively after he gave life to such a characer and created such a fan-base. His voice-acting was together with Snake Eater and MGS4, quite unmatched in gaming in terms of character/personality.

To my understanding it was friction early on when Hayter demanded they was to be paid and paid properly for their time and effort. I believe it was explained by one of the other voice-actors in an interview on IGN a few years back when they interviewed the voice-crew of MGS4, that they did MGS1 pro-bono and MGS2 very low-paid. Again I could be confusing things with some other game, but to my understanding David was quite clear on that they should be paid for their time and effort. I believe Kojima and Konami disagreed with this.

- Again, I am too lazy to google for this vid/s in order to support my arguement but this is my vivid memory of the development of the Hayter-Kojima/Konami-relation.

Though I can't help but wonder why David speaks out about this now. though I don't see the context. MGSV is "old" now and all but forgotten in the gaming-world.

@Anteares: Dawn of the Dead and The Great Escape were the premise for the original Metal Gear. The original appearance of Snake derives from Terminator's Kyle Reese, but Shinkawa's Snake is a mix of Van Damme and Christopher Walken. There's no doubt that Kojima has a deep appreciation for the work of John Carpenter and Kurt Russel (he even wrote a letter to Carpenter asking for his blessing before releasing the original MG), but he draws from a lot other sources too.

As gamers we become fans of the various actors who play the characters we love, but this is something I completely understand. To us, David Hayter may be the real Snake, but we've always known what Kojima was bringing to the table. He's trying to create these epic cinematic experiences. To him, he wants a higher level actor. I'm not hating on Hayter, because I was always a fan, but I just get Kojima's mentality.

When you can, why not work with the people you want to work with? You shouldn't work with the same guy forever just because some fans expect it. I would always rather have what the dev wants. I just hate pandering. Give me your vision and **** anybody else. Hayter doesn't need Kojima and Kojima shouldn't feel forced to work with him when he wants a bigger name/more accomplished actor.

With that being said, I would take Hayter over anybody to play Snake, but it shouldn't be up to fans IMO.

@Dari23:

MGS1 released 1998 then they took
3 years to release MGS2
3 years to release MGS3 which is the best title in my opinion.
4 years to release MGS4
7 years to release MGS5

I'd say lack of creative ideas although I saw great potential in the MGS series. Or maybe Kojima's A$$ got lazy overtime and this could be one of the reasons, if not the main reason why Konami kicked him out. I don't think they were willing to announce MGS6 15 years form now XD
That being said, I'm not optimistic with Kojima anymore and I guess Konami if smart enough will bring back Hayter (If they wasn't the reason behind his absent) and try to continue with the series because MGSv is not how people should remember the series. Hopefully then won't mess it more /:

@mist-akable: Peace Walker is a major Metal Gear Solid release which you failed to mention and is the direct prequel to MGSV. Portable Ops was also a major release back in the PSP days, even if it's sometimes disregarded as being non-canonical. Kojima also produced several games (Boktai, ZoE, Castlevania) during his "Metal-Gear-Centered" period and was vice-president of Konami Digital Entertainment. Kojima has been really busy for the past 29 years.

@asnakeneverdies:Well, aside from Castlevania since Kojima wasn't the original creator of it. You're right but still I didn't mention that MGS series actually started 1987 and not 1998 and was Kojima's most successful title unlike ZoE and any other titles that probably none would've heard of before we know the name Kojima from MGS. Also Kojima wasn't working alone, he had many writers helping him and the main plot alongside most main ideas of the MGS series should've been in Kojima's mind even before 1987. I'm not trying to say that the man didn't work or not creative, I'm just saying he's lazy and it's merely an opinion.

What either Kojima or Konami didn't realize is that Hayter is Snake, like it or not...and replacing him is just a big mistake like Phantom Pain proved to all of us...thankfully that game wasn't heavy on Voice Acting, hopefully if Konami decides to keep going with the franchise, they will bring back the original Snake.

Sutherland, wanted Kurt Russell (before motion acting was a major thing in games), Kojima has a fetish for TV and Movies we all know it. English isn't his main language, he doesn't know or care that they aren't as good as proper Voice Actors. I like Sutherland in real life, he was a waste of money in Phantom Pain.
