Max Payne beats Diablo to UK No. 1

Rockstar's latest bests Blizzard's technically troubled dungeon crawler by 8,000 physical sales; outperforms Max Payne 2's first week 10:1.

Max Payne 3 outdid its predecessor by a factor of 10:1 in its first week on sale, pipping Diablo III to the UK All-Formats number one. It was the second-biggest launch of the year so far--just behind Mass Effect 3, and Take 2's first number one since LA Noire hit the top spot in 2011.

Rockstar is back on top of the charts.
Rockstar is back on top of the charts.

The official sales charts include only physical sales, however, as digital downloads are not tracked as part of the main chart. In stores and from traditional online retailers, 11 percent of Diablo III's sales were of the limited collector's edition, compared to 2 percent for Max Payne 3.

FIFA Street kept up its strong performance, slotting in at three, refusing to budge from the top five despite a 17 percent drop in sales. Last week's number one, Sniper Elite V2, saw a 68 percent drop in sales as it found itself in fourth place.

FIFA 12 rounded out the top five following an eight percent drop in sales, while Prototype 2 dropped to six after a 15 percent decline in sales. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 bucked the trend to post a 21 percent rise in sales and reenter the top 10 at seven, sneaking ahead of Battlefield 3, which saw sales slip 2 percent.

The top 10 was rounded off by Assassin's Creed: Revelations and Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympics.

@xMoonDevilx NO! HOW CAN YOU NOT GET THIS? It's really simple. Various people are interested in, specifically, retail sales figures.

NOT INCOMPLETE! It would be incomplete if it was MEANT to include digital sales but it's NOT. It's not rocket science!

These are perfectly valid figures. And because the industry experts publish these figures they are considered news so Gamespot writes an article about it so that they can be considered to cover all 'news' aspects of the gaming industry.

@Shanks_D_Chop Exactly. It is about retail sales...thus being incomplete and invalid.

@xMoonDevilx That fact is irrelevant. This is not about digital sales...

@Gelugon_baat Obviously he meant genre but, the more that I think about it, 'gender' is not a completely inaccurate term... as long as we lose the perception that there are only two genders with a halfway point.

Who cares about the UK sales, what about the US sales?

That is all I care about, even though it is nice to that Max Payne 3 is doing well. This game deserves it.

Max Payne 3 is a great game. A 10/10.

@ghstbstr What a great attitude. "I don't care so why should anyone else?" Wonderful...

Digital distrubution is a huge part of the PC sales; it's hardly remotely suprising that a multi platform release would out sell even the biggest of PC releases in terms of physical sales.

Still nice to see both games selling well, a strong games market is good for all gamers regardless of platform.

"The official sales charts only include physical sales, however, as digital downloads are not tracked as part of the main chart."They want people to download games more, but yet, don't use them to quote how many have sold. That seems a bit backwards, considering a lot of people that play Diablo 3 would have already pre-downloaded it for the beta...

I seriously doubt that and PC games will beat a console games in disc sales these days. We tend to get our games from digital distribution, that way we don't need to leave our parents lofts (attics for the non english speakers out there :p )

@Gelugon_baat "reporting involves attracting as many people to read the article as possible" that's not reporting, that's marketing and misleading. Reporting is saying FACTS.

@Shanks_D_Chop A headline should be a very short idea of what the article is about rather than a "I gotcha ya" thing.

@ClaudiusCaesar Cheated? Only if it really got your hopes up, surely? It's a news article; no matter what context it might be in you should never jump the gun based on the headline.

And people who only read the big letters, figuratively and literally, will often find themselves holding the short end of the stick. Figuratively. They'll learn. Eventually. If I did, anyone can. =P

@Shanks_D_Chop Sure, there is some valid information on this article. But, as a reader, you feel cheated by the title. Also, some people read just the title.

@ClaudiusCaesar Okay, I see what you're saying and I half agree but there IS valid information in this article. The title is... well, it is kinda misleading but at the same time it's not. It says "Max Payne beats Diablo to UK No. 1" and none of that is false, just non-specific. It's misleading only if you then assume the rest of the story before reading the article.

@Whitebloodsun Like a headline "Diablo is number one on sells". "Base on my purchases, Diablo is on top of sells". People come to read my report, I make some bucks but I don't give any valid information for anyone.

@Shanks_D_Chop Exactly, what we could call good reporting (base on facts to inform people) and bad reporting (just to make money).

@ClaudiusCaesar Look, I appreciate how you feel. But reporting and facts are not synonymous. Reporting is a verb. It is not dependent on anything contained within that action being truthful.

Thank you for answering my first question. :)

But isn't that UFO article is also an attempt to attract as many readers as possible?

Reporting IS saying fact. But part of reporting is to actually get people to read the article.

Same as the title, "Max Payne beats Diablo to UK No. 1" is a fact. But the title is written that way to creates a news worthiness so that it can attract many viewers.

@ClaudiusCaesar No... it's not. It's admirable that you feel so strongly that it SHOULD but it's not the case. Pick up the Daily Mail some time and decide how much of it is fact...

@ClaudiusCaesar

That's not right either, I had once read an article reporting about someone saw a UFO. Is that facts?

Or is that just an attempt to attract many people to read the article?
