Master Chief Is Dead, But Not Really, in This New Halo 5 Video

The "official" story is that Master Chief is dead.

Microsoft has published a new TV commercial for Halo 5: Guardians that dives deeper into the Master Chief vs. Spartan Locke story for the upcoming sci-fi shooter. As we learned in the last TV commercial, the "official" story in Halo 5 is that Master Chief is dead. But that's not exactly true. This new ad sees Spartan Locke and the rest of Fireteam Osiris setting out to hunt down Chief, who has apparently gone rogue.

"The only thing worse than losing a hero, is watching him turn against us," the narrator says about Chief.

This commercial will air during this Sunday's Fear the Walking Dead season finale. Microsoft is buying up premium ad space for Halo this year, as last week's commercial ran during Sunday Night Football on NBC.

Halo 5 launches on October 27 exclusively for Xbox One. You can learn more about the game's interesting-sounding story through the Serial-style "Hunt the Truth" podcast series, the second season of which recently started.

In other recent Halo 5 news, the Seattle Sounders MLS team will wear Halo-branded jerseys in their matchup against LA Galaxy on Sunday. In addition, you can now listen to the game's title song, while Microsoft has confirmed that work has begun on Halo 6.

@DrunkenPunk800: The big popularity of Halo 5 shows that people did care about Master Chief. You also cared to post here and cared to say you don't care.

@aeluron1989: he is a dude in a suit named john. That is quite literally his backstory, nothing interesting about him at all.

@VoidBeyond: If you think the rest of his backstory is worth telling, you're just a fanboy :/

I played halos 1-4 and had lots of fun, but if you honestly think there's any sort of message or meaning to master chief as a character, you're wrong... he's just a big uninteresting cliche :/

@piraterooster: Pffft... if you only played the games you don't know a damn thing about the Chief. You've gotten maybe a third of his entire story

@moobacca: If him being a dude in a suit named john (that's two things) is a third of his story, I don't think I want to know the rest. Other than him being a generic super soldier space marine (Starcraft 2, Warhammer, etc), what's there to even tell?

@moobacca: You realize that's not actually a GOOD thing, right? Halo is first and foremost a video game series. Putting two thirds of the story and all of the protagonist's characterization in other media is bad design.

@moobacca: When it comes to a game series you shouldnt have to read the books just to learn a decent amount about the main character.

@colorblindnerd: To be fair, the games do have a lot of information about him, just buried in all sorts of hidden corners.

And while I wouldn't exactly call him a "deep" character, that's partly the point. Whereas everyone else is emotional, complex, and screws up a lot, he's this figure who's personality seems set in stone...the consummate who will never waver, and thus they lean on him, and rely on him as their moral compass.

There's a thing called perfect imbalance, which applies to a lot of stuff, including character personalities. It basically says to equal things out, if you have a deep, wounded, colorful character whose allegiances waver a lot and such, you need an equally stable, hardened figure to compare them with. That's Master Chief's role, and it's more like he makes the people around him interesting by being there to compare with. And at the end of the day, he still serves as that touchstone, the guy who's loyalty and fealty won't waver no matter what.

...which is why I think the angle of this game is dumb. [/has mentioned that in another post though]

@colorblindnerd: Decent amounts of information about any game character have always been in the game guides. Game guides are books. Not unlike novels, but also with lots of design pictures. Also, guides and novels can tell more of any story cheaply as it doesn't cost huge amounts of production money to produce a few minutes of video.

Although I do admit the character of Master Chief does leave way too much to the imagination in the games. He fell in love with Cortana after all, you could see it in his helmet expression (pun intended). Anyway, he seemed broken after that. Thats how heros are made, and then turned into bad guys. Standard issue hero complex.

@colorblindnerd: You don't need to read the books. Just need to pay attention. The story has a lot of clues along the way. A summary about what's going on:

I'm interested in knowing the story, not so much so that I'd buy an Xbox one though. I'll just read a synopses and maybe pick an Xbox one after a few more price drops. Didn't play halo 4 either.... they lost me on halo reach.

You should just watch the story on YouTube that's what I plan to do. Halo 5 looks pretty bad to me so I'm not buying it but in the off chance I'm wrong I'll be able to see what it offers on YouTube and of I like it I'll buy it and if not well at least I will have known the story.

@xenomorphalien:

All the gameplay shown so far is reminiscent of Halo 4 which was terrible I hate the inclusion of Blue Team and would rather it be Master Chief lone wolfing it like it should be don't want a bunch of useless AI companions following me around save that for Gears of War. Also hate the dual protagonist gameplay that was the worst part of Halo 2 I don't wanna be Locke and Fireteam Osiris just wanna be the Chief. Also I really can't forgive 343 for killing off Cortana like seriously who the fucks idea was that. Overall Halo 5 just looks terrible to me and definitely not like something I'll enjoy so I'm going to skip it and just watch it on YouTube. I'll be updated on the story at least so if I decide to checkout Halo 6(which is already being worked on apparently)I won't be lost narratively.

Actually yes I have I played the Multiplayer beta months ago and it felt terrible even when winning I was having no fun. I also have seen extensive gameplay footage of both the multiplayer and SP campaign and neither look very good and definitely don't look like something I would enjoy. I'm not a hater as you would call it I'm just not a blind fanboy even though I am a fan of the Halo series I can dislike some games in the series it's not like I have to blindly like them all. For instance I thought Halo 4 was terrible to and Halo 3 ODST was definitely underwhelming but Halo 3 is my absolute favorite FPS. So you see just because I think Halo 5 looks terrible doesn't make me a hater.

@wrestlingdude: it had nothing to do with the story, the multi-player changes were. The addition of gadgets ruined what I liked about the multi-player in halo 2 and less in halo 3 and way less in reach. Prequel sequel what ever. I always played the campaign through on legendary at least once, multiple times on halo 1-3... I just did not like reach at all and halo 4 was built on the same engine, it turned me off. I'm not saying halo 5 do sent look good or that story do sent interest me, but I don't have an Xbox one and I wouldn't buy one just to see what happens, after having been so turned off by my last halo experience. If halo 3 was the last one I played and bungee was making halo 5 maybe I'd pay for a $400 bundle... maybe... but I'll be picking one up sometime, just you know when it's closers to 200

@haanabi89: To be fair, his suit's basically a literal Ton of metal. It's suppose to be able to tell him if he's dead inside of it, and if it's malfunctioning enough that it can't, he's probably crushed or choking to death inside anyway.

...of course that never DOES end up being the case, but hey! Cinematic drama!

Halo 5 looks to be shaping up nicely gameplay wise. 343 is using tech like ID used in Wolfenstein TNO and Rage to dynamically scale the resolution to keep the framerate solid, and even before launch the game runs at a almost completely locked 60 fps. Being that I don't have an Xbox 1 I won't be playing but would most likely pick it up if I did. I think 343 did a good job with Halo 4 and although Locke seems kind of a cliche' character the rest of the game looks to be very Halo. The Arbiter returning is good to hear as well -- Keith David can put take off his Saint's Row purple tux and pick up a plasma sword. HOOrah

As a halo fan since day 1, I can honestly say I don't care whether he dies or not. He's such a shallow character to begin with, though it may have been a design choice, but even Kratos has more personality than him.

He used to be shallow, but that's changing a lot, and it's part of why I love what 343 is doing here. Master Chief is a soldier at his core, bred and trained in only that mindset since his early teens, and at 14 he was augmented to be nothing more than a war machine. He's known no other life outside of military service, and his interactions with even his own race are limited to that capacity. It's only now after the events of Halo 3 that we're starting to see the John's humanity crack his armor and shine through. He's lost a dear friend in Cortana that, digital or not, was always a reliable companion and treated him more as a human being than anyone he's ever known. He's just now reuniting with his team and comrades to tackle something that he believes is what he needs to do - not something he's being ordered to do, and in fact is even being ordered NOT to persue. He's evolving as a person, and as a human being. That right now is what makes him such an interesting character to me, if not a mysterious one.

@Fandango_Letho: Exactly. MC's stuck between being a Gordon Freeman style empty vessel and a Marcus Phoenix style generic shooter tough guy. His recognizable armor is more important to the series than the man inside it. If Halo 5 were the Master Chief's last hurrah, I think I'd be more excited for Halo 6.

@Fandango_Letho: Coz Kratos doesnt wear a suit and a helmet?

I think most gamers find Master Chiefs personality shallow mainly coz of his battle gear.

No face,no personality.

Playing the series from part 1 tru 4( MCC as aexample) would help a bit...or reading some of Halo books
