Mafia 3 Review in Progress

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

A field report from the first six hours.

When I finished watching the first episode of Stranger Things, I knew exactly how I'd be spending the next 10 hours of my life. I mean, I had to keep watching. And whether it's Game of Thrones or Gilmore Girls, that urge to binge watch is a compulsion many if not most of us have experienced. It's also exactly how I felt during the opening hours of Mafia III's heavily narrative-driven campaign.

The faux-documentary framing uses a familiar format that hooked me instantly. The atmosphere--which flows from both the rich, era-appropriate soundtrack and the intoxicating New Orleans-inspired backdrop--pulled me in further. And the characters, all of whom feel distinctive and memorable, deepened my investment in the events unfolding before me.

Now Playing: Mafia III - Video Review in Progress

Unlike many sandbox shooters, Mafia III takes great pains to introduce its major players and flesh out their motivations. Rather than rush you through some hackneyed set up so you can skip straight to the carjacking and cover-based shooting, the narrative takes its time, lingering on scenes that make all the action that comes afterwards feel far more meaningful.

No Caption Provided

Players looking to dive straight into the action will likely grow impatient waiting to be let loose in the world, but that just makes Mafia's admirable insistence on worldbuilding that much bolder. And that's not the only bold choice Mafia III makes. Its story follows a mixed-raced war hero working for the black mob in the American South in 1968, so as you can imagine, grotesque and abhorrent discrimination is pretty much the norm.

Certain players will undoubtedly recoil when confronted with the harsh, shameful realities of America's past, especially since Mafia doesn't sugarcoat any of it. But the setting is handled deftly, and it genuinely adds to the story being told. The historical context colors the events and informs certain aspects of the characters, though the campaign's primary focus remains squarely on Lincoln's deeply personal quest for revenge.

During the sections I've seen so far, racism was primarily depicted as a fact of life. Protagonist Lincoln Clay's tale consistently felt human rather political, even when he was gunning down apparent white supremacists. His story's a compelling one, and it happens to be set against a distressing but historically significant backdrop. After a few hours in that world, I'm not just intrigued, I'm invested.

Unfortunately, I was less impressed with Mafia III's gameplay, which is mostly unremarkable--at least during the game's very earliest portions. As with most third-person open-world games, much of the action consists of running, shooting, and driving. At first, I found Lincoln's basic movements to be relatively clunky and imprecise. Similarly, I found the aiming slow and unresponsive even when I attempted to increase the analog stick's sensitivity.

I developed a better feel for both over time, but many of the mechanics remain disappointingly simplistic. Enemies, for example, generally stand in place or pace on short, predictable loops outside of combat. And in combat, they generally grab cover and stay put, periodically popping up to fire off a few shots. I only noticed enemies flanking on a handful of occasions.

The cover system also feels barebones. You can lock to a piece of cover with a single button press, but maneuvering between obstacles while remaining in cover proved less intuitive than systems we've seen in games like Gears of War and The Division. Even simple omissions made the shooting feel less satisfying than it could have. The reticule, for example, doesn't react when you hover over an enemy, so I often wasn't sure a shot was actually going to land.

No Caption Provided

Ultimately, the action I've experienced so far has been fine--unoriginal and imperfect, but functional nonetheless. Over the course of those first several hours, the campaign opened up very gradually, adding and expanding gameplay options at a relatively slow pace. Once I gather better weapons and recruit more associates--unlocking the political side of Lincoln's power grab--I'm hoping Mafia III's gameplay will develop complexity strong enough to match its already stellar story.

And there's plenty of time for that to happen. I've only played roughly six hours of a game that will, in all likelihood, span dozens of hours. I still need to explore the expansive city of New Bordeaux and determine if it holds anything of interest beyond story missions. I still need to dismantle more rackets and dig deeper into the strategy underlying the campaign. And I still need to find out if Lincoln's story can maintain the same caliber of excellence it achieved out of the gate.

Be sure to check back next week for my full review, and for now, here's everything you need to know going into the game.

@jancis25: The only bugs I've been seeing is with the graphics. Gameplay has been pretty rock solid for me. And when they describe the controls as being "clunky" note that it's relative. Lincoln controls rather smoothly for me. I'd define clunky as Geralt in Witcher 3.

If you're interested in a great story with some good but not perfect gameplay this Mafia iteration is just as good as it's predecessors. I'd give it a 7.5 in its current state. Easily an 8 or higher with some patches

@jancis25: Depends on the bugs, as long as they are not game breaking they can actually add to the experience by being quite comical. To be fair not seen many in Mafia III personally on console, though the visuals are a bit err ... off on times. Overall good game and to my mind worth paying full price to play it now. Not six months down the road, when everybody has moved onto something totally different.

@Fallenlords69: for a purly one player experiance id advise people to wait till the used copies come flowing out and get it cheap, the story is good but gameplay is very simple, you pretty much only need to hide and whistle your way to completing it

Most useless comment in game review sites?

Works fine for me so stop moaning :P

Surely you know that in a PC hardware is vastly different from system to system so whilst it may work for you it may not work for many others.

If it works fine then more power to you but it's not something anyone really needs to know.

Meh, I was deciding between this or Mankind Divided, looks like the bugs and underwhelming gameplay made this decision easy.

At least the story's good.

@xenomorphalien: I found Mankind Divided pretty boring really, much preferred Human Revolution. It felt like it had a better sense of purpose.

@jay30mcr: Better than this. Heard it's almost as good as Human Revolution, except it kinda falls short story-wise. I can live with that though.

the PC version is knackered mate. Put your purchase on hold sport. maybe patches will make game work hunky-dory but for now it aint happening. I am gutted mate, developers cocked up big time by not catering towards PC player base. developers are taking the piss, its 100% bollocks. this such a tosh.

@Karmazyn: I've been playing it maxed out for 2 days now. Crashed once. Plays ok for me. Getting around 40-45 fully maxed or i can drop just the anti alaising down to low and get 55-60 fps. For me the game still plays very well even at 45 fps so i leave AA maxed.

Want an early view into this? Mafia 1 felt unique, this feels like a GTA clone. Only thing I can say is, another day, another third person action game.

@PETERAKO: I always thought the Mafia series was a GTA clone from the start. If any game made me truly feel that way it was Mafia 1. It was like playing a very restrictive and boring version of GTA.

Felt the same way about Saints Row until I played it and realized just how fun it was. If any of the Mafia games feel unique, it's this one.

So I just tried the game out for myself and...god damn, this game is unplayable. Its clunky and glitchy and just plain ew. I mean the fact that it doesn't even have a main menu tells you everything. The graphics are pretty poor, but that wouldn't bother me if the graphics were at least clear. Everything looks blurry and foggy and the visuals glitch all over the place. The gameplay seems super bad. Jesus christ, not gonna lie, this is pretty damn bad.

Some perspective:

This phrase:

"grotesque and abhorrent"

appears directly next to a picture of a guy getting his face blasted off by a shotgun, and yet it is used to describe not violence and murder, but discrimination. Welcome to the new world.

@Kain0067:

Oh yes, and followed immediately by this: "Certain players will undoubtedly recoil"... not from the death and murder, but from the recreation of discrimination and rude words. Since almost none of us experience real violence and brutality in our lives, something much smaller like treating people unfairly feels much more consequential to us. At least, that's my theory. Maybe we as gamers have just become so removed from actual life that we've lost all perspective... who knows.

@Kain0067: Easily put, because violence is something you'd expect. Tell me, how many times have you walked around and seen blatant in your face racism.

Keeping it strictly within a gaming context, MW2 would be the best example. You go through the entire game killing waves and waves of men, but the one scene where you carry out a terrorist attack in a crowded airport can be jarring to some.

This game has so many problems on xbox one. I have encountered so many glitches in the short time I've played it. Washed out colours, pop in's galore, so many bugs where character models get stuck in walls and other scenery, collide with a bush while driving and it's like hitting a brick wall. The game crashed twice, once after i had finished a mission, it was about to go to a cut scene, then bam game crashes to the home screen, when i booted it up again it began after the cut scene, had enough and quit playing after that. How could a game that's clearly not ready go gold, and get shipped in it's current poor state. Haven't heard of a patch for consoles, and i'm not playing it again until it is patched.

@valdarez: I had the same issue, however as @valdarez stated there was a patch that did downlowad and since then the game has played smooth with no issues to date. I dont get why people are bashing the graphics so badly, personally the graphics are smooth with no pixeling or pop in's. Love the brutal kills that you can do or you can opt to do non-lethal take downs is also a nice welcome to those that are just tired of blood and guts. The story to me is engrossing and you do start to feel for Clay after what happened to him and feel his anger. Like that you can go guns blazing but also some silent kills are just sweet to do. My only gripe so far is that for cars of this era to burn rubber on every car you drive is just over the top and that you can drift them around corners too. That to me takes away from the era that the game itself is set in and the cars all act the same way. The controls are a little weird, clunky I guess you could say but once you get used to it they are not so bad. I actually like this game and am looking forward to getting back into after some football this afternoon. Go EAGLES!!

@valdarez: The game crashed after the first hour for me but then stayed stable for the next 5 or 6 hours. A large patch came out this a few hours ago. Unlocks frame rate and seeing as the patch is 1.2GB I'm guessing it may fix other issues.
