MadWorld residents total 66,000 in March

Hyperviolent Wii debut from Platinum Games and Sega fails to post suitably insane first-month sales.

Last week, a Sega representative said the early sales indicators for the publisher's M-for-Mature-rated Wii game MadWorld were "very encouraging." The NPD Group released its monthly sales figures yesterday, and the sales posted by the violent action game in its March debut were perhaps less encouraging.

Brutal.
Brutal.

An NPD representative told GameSpot that MadWorld sold 66,000 copies at US retailers last month. That puts it well out of the top 10 and behind another M-for-Mature game on a Nintendo system, the critically adored Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

MadWorld, the first product from Sega's partnership with Platinum Games, is nothing if not attention grabbing. The largely black-and-white game drops players into a life-and-death gameshow, armed only with a chainsaw and an environment full of sharp points and blunt objects.

As of press time, Sega representatives had not returned GameSpot's requests for comment on MadWorld's sales. Last week, when the publisher's spokesman referred to the early data as encouraging, he added that Sega "absolutely" wants to make MadWorld into a franchise, provided that it "resonates with the audience."

I always knew that a mature game on the Wii wouldn't sell very well. After all, most Wii owners are girls, children and the over 40's. And as I've said before, Wii owners prefer to buy first party titles and party/casual games. Personally I was never interested in Madworld. It looks very juvenile and is all about the "Whoa look at all the blood! My mum is like so gunna kill me if she catches me playin' this" factor. I prefer adult games that are actually made for adults (Dead Space for example, which I am currently playing) rather than games that are made for adults but clearly aimed at teenage boys.

I like this game, granted I suck horribly at it, but it is entertaining, my only complaint is that lack of subtitles for the commentary.

I didn't enjoy it. I felt the whole thing was "hurr, look at all this blood!" and lack of real gameplay. Yahtzee nailed it in the review. Very immature for a "mature" title. They need to seperate the "M" rating, imo. "M" for guts and gore, and "M" for adult themed (not porn, philosopically speaking) stories like MGS4.

I fancy myself a fairly hardcore gamer, and the Hard difficulty of MadWorld is giving me a heck of a time. They really didn't skimp there, and I wish the difficulty had been available from the start. Sure, the regular mode gets you into it a little more easily, but some of us want high difficulty right away. Anyway, my point is that, for those who don't consider MadWorld hardcore enough, I invite you to play Hard mode.

geedotherodian Madworld is an exclusive game for the wii. It will probably never be put on the PS3 or Xbox360. I can't believe that a you a PS3 or Xbox360 owner is actually jealous of a Wii game. the way you play would be crap using the PS3 and Xbox360 controls.

I picked this game up on day one. Maybe all the casual Wii owners were frightened by this mature title.

Yes I know that the you can finish the story in 6 hours but the feeling you can get by playing this game, graphics etc is priceless. What would you rather prefer this fantastic game that doesnt dissapoint in its short 6 hour campagin or a overpriced shovelware that takes 2 hours to finish. Heres my hope the conduit doesnt have the same fate.

It's such a good game. Of course people won't buy it. God forbid a game that I want a sequel to, I won't get.

Hm... there's a lot of interesting points of view floating around here... but some don't have anything to do with reality. Fact: The Wii has more consoles out there than the others. Fact: Even if the percentage of so-called "hardcore" gamers that own Wiis is less than what is found on either the PS3 or 360, the superior numbers --alone-- would still offset the percentage differences when it comes to purchasing power. Madworld (and I'm talking the SAME game, with no changes to gameplay, etc.) would have seen the same sales --or less-- on other consoles (single-system, granted). I think a lot of "hardcore" gamers (and I consider myself one) that own Wiis maybe just weren't interested in Madworld after it hit the streets. To be honest, I was really looking forward to the game, and after I rented it and played it for an hour, I didn't feel the need to purchase. I was ready to put my money where my mouth is --yelling for more mature games-- but I really didn't feel that Madworld was mature, really... it was just comically violent. My playing style dictates the need for more multi-player games with richer multi-player experiences, or more single-player games with richer experiences. That's just me. Truth-time: I LOVED certain aspects of the game (multiple street-signs through the head? C'MON, that is AWESOME), but they just didn't outweigh my need for something different. I was impressed with the game, but I really wish it was... more.

too bad most Wii owners now are not the gamecube owners but "normal" "mainstream" people who got Wii for it motion capabilities and when such "regular" games come out, there's little to no interest for it...Nintendo really kick itself in the A*% this time...

They should have made it multiplatform, I gaurantee that it would have sold better on the 360 and PS3, hopefully they will port it.

Where are the cry babies now? The Nintendo Wii isn't "hardcore" claims a lot of naysayers and when a great mature game is released, no one buys it. The Nintendo Wii is as hardcore as you may it out to be, the same goes for the Xbox 360 and PS3. A hardcore game isn't defined by graphics, but gameplay dynamics. Sure there is a lot more shovelware on the Nintendo Wii than the PS3/Xbox 360 but there are titles that I consider "hardcore" that no one seems to want to acknowledge. Here is a few of the titles that you so called hardcore gamers don't see to recognize: MadWorld, Metal Slug Anthology, House of the Dead Overkill, Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, Bully, Dead Rising, No More Heroes, Okami, Nights and Geometry Wars: Galaxies. There are just some of the games that I consider fun. If a game has to be graphically intense for it to be considered hardcore by any of you, you're not a hardcore gamer, you are a graphics whore. If you want to have the complete gaming experience, get all three consoles like I did. You will be truly amazed that you will give each console equal playing time.

between this and chinatown wars, it doesn't look like the wii or ds is going to get mature support. that means more Nintendo dogs andcrappy minigames. =( two great games shunned because of the release on two family oriented gaming machines.

It's another example of a great game being totally overlooked. It's happened on every platform in history, whether you like to admit it or not.Madworld is a pretty unorthodox action game, like Killer 7 was. It'd be hard to sell well on any platform when action gamer fans only buy FPS or TPS, which Madworld is neither. Also it's not a sequel or spinoff or based on a franchise which doesn't look good in the eyes of most gamers these days.

This is insane. If MadWorld had hit the 360 or PS3 or PC it would be a runaway hit, not a sub-platinum game that is hamstrung by its console. MadWorld is a GREAT game, but do even Wii fans believe it wouldn't be better on a different system? Both in terms of sales and quality/length.

Despite the hype surrounding this game, there was never any doubt that it would be a niche game that would only sell to the truly hardcore gamers...which, sadly, are the minority of Wii gamers.

That's why you release these games on the 360 and PS3. I'm not bashing the Wii or saying that it doesn't have "hardcore" gamers, it's just that these types of games actually sell on the other consoles. They are losing massive revenue because of their refusal to release this game as a multi-platform title. The motion controls are not necessary.

I for one am gonna but this game ASAP. And if you're among the ones always complaining about the lack of quality hardcore titles on the Wii, I suggest you just shut up, and buy this as well. Because if it's not successful, don't come crying about the Wii library afterwards.

I think the resonating side of things didnt work. Also its not advertised like GTA or RE5. A mature game only grabs those mature and hardcore gamers that read about it or have been tracking it thus far. I bet there are alot of people that still havent heard of it. I personally picked the game up and enjoyed it for what its worth. Alot of reviews for it have been back and forth, some saying its great and others saying its stylised and not that great. I think the issue with sales here, is marketing choices, such as not putting the deathwatch trailers out to the general public even in a censored state, and then also being bombarded by mixed reviews which will always make a researching consummer on the edge of buying or moving on unsure and generally choose to move away rather than take that risk. It is in my opinion a good game, and a good way to show from the hardcore to nintendo, that Minigame collections are not and should not be the only thing to appear on the wii. Aswell the price of the game has dropped drastically from launch assuming its the same In the States as it is here In Canada, so it should sell to more as it become a more affordable good time. I just hope this doesnt mean the hardcore are going to be completely forgotten on the wii. If it does I bet alot of wii owners myself included will be all too happy at that point to shelve the system for a 360 or PS3

Provided they make a longer sequel with a little more variety and replay value, I'll definitely get it. As it is, I liked MadWorld a lot, but I feel like it would have sold a lot better if the price at release had been $30, like No More Heroes. I just hope Platinum Games does another one and listens to the critical feedback, because this was a lot of fun, despite some flaws, and I'd like to see more of it.

The short length of the game may be turning people away from it. A lot of people look for the greatest "bang" for there buck nowadays, and video games are no exception. All reviews I have read clock it around 5-6 hours. Today 15-20 hrs is pretty much the standard for a decent game. I'll probably buy it used when it reaches the $30-$35 mark. It also didn't help that Matt from Ign hyped this game to no end, he tends to do that with all a lot of Wii games.

I was waiting to see how this game would sell. I was hoping for Nintendo it would sell at least 1 million in the US, but it looks like that will not happen. The game got very good reviews and was advertised very good but it sells poorly. This is what 3rd party developers are starting to talk about the Wii. It is fools gold. If 3rd party games continue to sell this poorly the rest of the year, I can see by 2010 the Wii will have no 3rd party support and by 2011 the Wii will be on its way out. That is how every console that dies an early death gets it. No system, no matter how good 1st party games are, will live long with 3rd party support. I hope I am wrong but I am seeing the same thing happening to the Wii that happened to the Saturn and the Dreamcast.

i know developers want to support wii, it sells like hot cakes, but the truth is, its a "Different" kind of console. it appeals more to casual gamers than the hardcore crowd. its graphics are outdated, no HD, no dvd playback, and the control limits the genres available to it. PS3 n 360 gamers prefer a full media center of features(dvd, blu ray, netflix, HD, etc.) So i think developers and gamers are going to rethink their strategies and gaming options soon, especially considering the loss of u.s. Fatal frame, Winter, and bad sales(okami n madworld) . unless its zelda, mario or a party game, it aint gonna sell. True gamers are realizing the wii is not a hardcore gamers choice, thats why the sales are falling, we dont want to wait years for one good game. Sold mine a while ago and i dont miss it at all.

I think word of the game's short length (6~ hours) needed to complete the campaign relegated this game into the realm of a rental rather than a purchasable one.

Once again...hate to see games do poorly but I held off on this one because I thought that it would do bad. Now this may not makes sense but oh it does. When a big game does poorly it goes to the bargain bin much faster and thus I spend $10 on it instead of $60. Yeah for big games that do poorly! Can you say Too Human..got that last week for $10.

This game looks awesome but the only thing I'm interested in from sega is SHENMUE 3. It will never happen but a man can dream. I mean if they make another crappy Sonic game I swear I'll write them off for ever. I'll probably get this game if I ever get any money.
