MadWorld residents total 66,000 in March

Hyperviolent Wii debut from Platinum Games and Sega fails to post suitably insane first-month sales.

Last week, a Sega representative said the early sales indicators for the publisher's M-for-Mature-rated Wii game MadWorld were "very encouraging." The NPD Group released its monthly sales figures yesterday, and the sales posted by the violent action game in its March debut were perhaps less encouraging.

Brutal.
Brutal.

An NPD representative told GameSpot that MadWorld sold 66,000 copies at US retailers last month. That puts it well out of the top 10 and behind another M-for-Mature game on a Nintendo system, the critically adored Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

MadWorld, the first product from Sega's partnership with Platinum Games, is nothing if not attention grabbing. The largely black-and-white game drops players into a life-and-death gameshow, armed only with a chainsaw and an environment full of sharp points and blunt objects.

As of press time, Sega representatives had not returned GameSpot's requests for comment on MadWorld's sales. Last week, when the publisher's spokesman referred to the early data as encouraging, he added that Sega "absolutely" wants to make MadWorld into a franchise, provided that it "resonates with the audience."

This game suffered the sterotypical factors of the Wii think every game on the Wii is family friendly and M games do not belong on it.

MadWorld is not a mainstream core game so it is not going to pull mainstream numbers. To say that a core game cannot sell on a Nintendo system is to say that Goldeneye and Perfect Dark never existed or never sold well or that Resident Evil 4 and the Resident Evil remake did not sell well but those games are mainstream core games. That has been the problem with the few core games that the Wii has gotten. They are not mainstream core games.

See That game is suited more for the 360 and PS3. I understand that Wii gamers want more then the casual/party games but Mad World is more then they can handle. I do hope Sega things about bringing the game over to the 360 and PS3. I think those games will love that mayhem type of game much better then Wii gamers, Which in a way is sad. Also the bad sale numbers just might keep game makers from wanting to put mature games on the Wii even though we are always hearing they want those kind of games

I'm gonna say the very same thing that I had to say over the GTA sales for Chinatown Wars. I'm an adult who owns a Wii, but the truth is this game just didn't interest me. That sorta comment received me a few thumbs down on the GTA sales figures comment list, but that's fine. Madworld doesn't interest me in the least. Madworld looks like a game with no true substance. That equals no sale here just like a GTA game on tiny little hand held system. Sorry, but that's just how I feel.

Madworld failed simply because the Wii doesn't have that kind of audience. Same way Chinatown Wars failed. They're mature games. Nintendo has a reputation for being family friendly, and for casual gamers. Most Wii owners aren't gonna buy this. Because most are soccer moms, grandmas, and children. I wouldn't expect any mature game to really sell well on Nintendo Wii. Even the title of the system looks cute "Wii".

Im not to surprised that it didn't sell well. IF this were to come out on any other system it wont of got the buzz it did. Also most people who bought this game probably own the others systems as well. Then the other that did buy it were like i all ready have my super violent fix like GTA4 i dont need this.

Game is too short to warrant a purchase (i.e. Heavenly Sword). Rent dat sucka. Gamers like BigBad95 are looking for the most bang for their buck. Given a choice between purchasing fallout 3 (100+ hours) or RE5 (co-op and multiplayer) or MadWorld, which would you choose?

the reason why I haven't bought this game is because I don't have much money and there are too many good games released all at once for example fallout 3, prince of persia, street fighter 4, resi 5, left 4 dead, fear 2, halo wars and many many MANY more so I can only buy one or two of those games every 4-5 months and the reason why I didn't buy madworld is because I'd rather play a game with a controller instead of this motion sensor poop because it feels more like a chore instead of some relaxing fun for example metroid prime 3 is a royal pain in the ass to play and was the only metroid game that took me more than a month to complete because the wii remote sucks ass

Oh c'mon now, the lowbrow humor of the game is part of it's charm! It's like Family Guy or South Park, sharp satire. There's an interview with Al Lowe at the bottom of the news here where he talks about this in length, i posted an excellent response there in the comments about that already.

@wallywallas The economy wasn't responsible for GTA: CW low sales, my friend. Look at Pokemon Platinum, with over 800,000 in sales in the same month. And I don't know where you are getting your info, but Killzone 2 is over 1 mil sales worldwide, with over 600,000 in the US, and Street Fighter 4 sold over 800,000 in the US in just February alone. These are good numbers.

It just goes to show that the economy isn't in good shape, even for videogames. AAA games like GTA: CW, Killzone 2, Street Fighter 4 and Madworld that don't sell the way they are supposed to, proves it.

@ebonyflame It's because a majority of Wii owners are kids and grandma's that don't discuss things such as this on the internet. The people who are clamoring for hardcore games do buy them, there just isn't many of them due to the Wii's main demographic.

This is just another example of what I have been saying for a while, and that is that the Wii and, to a lesser extent, the DS are selling to a different consumer market in general, kind of like how PC gamers, again in general, are a different market than console gamers. They like different games, and some genres just have a tough time selling in encouraging numbers. While I certainly enjoy the few hardcore games on Wii, I really wonder how Dead Space Extraction and Silent Hill Shattered Memories will perform. I'm torn between wanting third parties to keep making hardcore games since Nintendo dropped us, and wanting them to put these games on 360/PS3 instead. I really lost a lot of respect for Nintendo at last years E3 when they put out a wimpy "sequels to Mario and Zelda are in the works" and then showed the new Animal Crossing as their example of support for "Core" gamers. Please...

It's on the wrong console really, I wonder what the sale would have been like on the 360 and PS3? Still i hope it sales well just for being quite different like Clover used to be known for.

@Pices: I don't know what to tell you, obviously out taste in games varies so massively that we just don't seee common ground. Fair enough, you gave an honest answer. @Paladin King: Oh yeah, I'm all a-tremble over that lol. That said, it will sell... Nintendo has hit some kind of godlike sweetspot when it comes to moving hardware and shovelware. They are fiscally so*****ing their userbase by releasing cashing in on hardware at the expense of the games. That is the ultimate slap in the face frankly, but the test for Nintendo will be what they do after the Wii. Will they try to be competative again, or are they going to try and cash in on a new gimmick. I hope they do the former.

@nappan: I do agree that Madworld, while good, could've been better. That said....let's say that the game was better, firmly entrenched in the 80s across all reviews. Do you think it would have sold any better? I'm not so sure really. The Wii may have created a userbase that simply can't support "hardcore" titles. It'll be interesting to see how No More Heroes 2 fairs. Will the sales be worse than last time? And as far as hardware over software....I know i'm "pumped" for the Wii Motion Plus. How about you? :P I'm sure the 40 buck pack that comes with Wii Sports Resort will sell like hotcakes.

I think this is a good game, but not a great one. I can't help but think that it could have lived up to its potential (or at least triple the freaking length) on another console/PC. I think that this game's puerile excesses are borne out of a desire to show how "not kiddy" it is... but that gets in the way of some of the decent brawler action. I don't think this game has failed, I think it has gotten enough good press that a sequel will either be non-exclusive, or they will get enough money from Nintendo to make exclusivity worth their while. The gamers failed the game, the game failed to live up to its potential and fell into the "badittude" trap, and Nintendo failed the other two by not marketing this game well, choosing a poor release date, and letting such a short game sell at the $50 price point for even a DAY. A MadWorld sequel wouldn't draw me to the Wii, but it would probably get my money on another platform, if they expanded the scope of the gameplay and story, and eased off the cheesey dialogue. In the end, the sales numbers are just a metric that anyone can interpret. I've made my views clear, but other valid ones do exist, much as it pains me to admit that. @Pices: Answer this one question honestly then, if you are a Hardcore Nintendo Fan: As a longtime fan of Nintendo, do you believe the direction they're taking in selling hardware ahead of software for profit, and the reduction of innovation in the 1st and third party to be a GOOOOD direction? As a longtime Nintendo fan, I don't even RECOGNIZE this company that is hocking Wii's and DSi's. Oh, and Wii Fit? Not a game.

hmm, people who diss the sales are getting thumbs down, while people who praise it are getting thumbs up. The irony of all this is that despite the discouraging sales figures, which says a lot about the standing of Wii owners in general about such mature games, people are still vigorously trying to defend it. The game may be good, but if it didn't sell well, it failed. So it's time to admit that perhaps Nintendo did this to themselves.

@nappan I chose the Wii because I am a hardcore Nintendo fan. Yes, Nintendo is introducing casuals to the market but it is not harming me. Heck, even Wii Sports and Fit are awesome and I am buying Resort as well. But since I am a hardcore gamer, I buy a lot of hardcore games and enjoy those lame mini and party games.

@BloodMist: I think Poe has a story to resonate with anyone's subconscious... it's probably just a matter of what issues we all have ;) . No argument about King... a very multifaceted author; surprisngly so more often than not. @Hillsy: That, and hardcore gamers are probably less interested in a handheld version of GTA, having already played that style in GTA1&2, and that being a downgrade from the current generation of GTA.

Mmm..nappan..i must be honest with you, Murders in the Rue Morgue, is my favorite Poe story...for various reasons. But him and Poe are beyond excellent. And then you have of course King, who drives his psychological and metaphysical aspects of horror stories to their brink, and just keeps goin....until your mind is boggled.

@BloodMist: Hmmm... you have a point. Also, the near-omnipotence and the soul destroying visage would be a problem. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy Lovecraft, I just wasn't scared by him. Now, Poe... The Pit and The Pendulum gets me EVERY time. @tjharwin: I won't argue the concept, because I honestly don't know. Personally, I find a game with promise and a good cencept to be more upsetting if it falls so far short of its potential. However, I should clarify, I don't wish any harm on the person who developed or thought of the game, it is just a turn of phrase.

@ Nappan WiiMusic was a good idea, despite it being done before by Guitar Hero slightly. Anyway, great idea, it was just done very poorly. It could have been so much better if, for example, peripherals were included or something. I know it's a crap game, but the concept had amazing potential. Perhaps whoever thought of it wasn't responsible for letting it fail.

@BloodMist: Am I the only person who found Lovecraft more funny than scary? The stories were sometimes morbid and bizarre, but not scary. Lets face it, in this day and age, if some squid-faced monster jumped a grade-schooler, the kid would probably dump a clip from a 9mm into it. Now THAT is scary. ;)

@r_gam3: Um, ok, as a conerned gamer worried about games, I'd like to see games like MadWorld and NMH made to a higher new-gen standard. I'd like to see Nintendo focus less on new version of the DS and focus more on the interesting games that made gamers love them once upon a time. I'd REALLY like to see the person who greenlit WiiMusic taken out behind Nintendo headquarters and shot. None of these things are going to happen. As for your list, if they are going to compete, then compete. It isn't as though Nintendo didn't have a choice as to when it would be released. It IS their fault that RE5 and GTA make MadWorld look juvenile and painfully short (on replay value as well). So, yeah, maybe the biggest factor in March was that for 10 dollars more you could buy RE5 or GTA, or maybe MadWorld is on the wrong platform, being insufficiently marketed and developed to save money and move hardware. That is NOT a good model for gamers worried about gaming.

only USA USA = 66k PAL = 50k (cam ten day later) Rest = 60k+ Equals = 176k + Pretty good for a game that is: 1) Niche game 2) 18 rated (Halo 3 was 15 in UK) 3) new IP 4) released on the same day as RE5, GTA 5) Released in march 6) released in a recession Honestly, some gamers worry too much. Let sales worry the publisher, you worry about gaming.

@Pices: If that is what you wanted, why did you choose the Wii? Each console has a speciality, and "lame party and mini games" have been this generation's biggest winners for Nintendo. @07pops07: Which brings me to Pops... Yeah, there are sequels planned for some established "adult" Wii titles, and NMH was a big success from the perspective of the developer. However, the same game released multiplatform... do you think the dev wouldn't have been HAPPIER? Gamers would have been happier at least... Now, while every title doesn't need to sell millions for a sequel, the standard for the Wii is both higher, and lower. On one hand, NMH is one of the only moderately mature games to find any success on the Wii (that wasn't a port, a "Wii-version of a game", or a critical flop, I'm looking at you Ghetto ninja) are pretty much bound to get sequels. After all, if Sega is encouraged by 66k domestic and a truly sad amount international, well... it isn't about moving units obviously. Nintendo started using a model where they make tons of money selling HARDWARE, not software at a profit. To quote Reggie...
Reggie Fils-Aime... said publishers of games for its Wii console needed to sell one million units of a game to turn a profit.... Only 16 out of 486 games for Nintendo Wii game machines have sold more than one million units as of March 1, according to NPD
Now, while Nintendo has said that is innacurate, and games CAN be profitable below the 1 mil mark.
...based on the level of investment, based on the price point, and so it's unfortunate that [Reggie] was misquoted in that article."
For "level of investment and price point" read: Why was MadWorld so MADDENINGLY short and priced at 50 bucks to begin with instead of 40? Hmmm... maybe that is the "investment" and "price point" issue. This all goes to the Nintendo fanboys who think this is all about marketing. Marketing goes into the price! Want a game to be sold to masses... well, the masses need to know about it, and that takes money. Given the nature of the retraction, and the distance between 1million and 66k... I'd say that while MadWorld is probably good for the Wii as a marketing tool, it isn't where the $$$ is being made. 20 Million units of WiiPlay. You're telling me 66k of MadWorld even TOUCHES that? Or 45 million Wiis, associated Wiimotes, Nunchuck controllers, etc.. etc... MadWorld and NMH are the bubble gum with your baseball cards.

Mmm....just one thing kavadias1981...what you forgot to mention is that Dead Space is a cross between Alien and Resident Evil, but it lacks all of the charm, originality, and character that has made both of those series absolute classics.Plus it isn't scary in the slightest.Ugly creatures are scary if you have to constantly conserve ammo and they can kill you in one hit.Not if you can just mow them down like they were bunnies. It's not mature, and it's not interesting.Play a game like Clive Barker's Undying if you want to know how a game can truly chill you to the bone in pure Lovecraftian fashion.Never heard of it?Yeah...thought not.Sorry for the late reply but i had to sleep sometime.
