Little Big Planet wins big at D.I.C.E.

Media Molecule's adorable platformer cleans up with eight Interactive Achievement Awards, including Overall Game of the Year; Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, and Dead Space rack up two each.

LAS VEGAS--The first 24 hours of the 2009 D.I.C.E. Summit were all business, with presentations from Valve founder Gabe Newell, Capcom creative director Jun Takeuchi, and Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello. Tonight, though, the annual game-industry confab, noted for its exclusivity and insider access, got its glamour on with the 12th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.

Jay Mohr hams it up.
Jay Mohr hams it up.

Dually doled out by D.I.C.E. organizers the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences and the International Game Developers Association, the Interactive Achievement Awards stand in stark contrast to the Spike TV Video Game Awards. Whereas that event embraces the notion of games as hip and youthful entertainment, the IAA show is a more Oscar-esque attempt at seriously acknowledging the growing medium.

If there is a breach in the IAA's high-class facade, it is the blue humor of comedian Jay Mohr, who emceed the ceremony for the fourth year running. Despite the disparity, Mohr has proven to be a popular part of the program, even as he ruthlessly mocked the crowd as a crowd of "guys and blow-up dolls."

"We're going to give out some awards to some people who deserve them, and some who quite frankly do not deserve them," Mohr joked. "Some people are gonna come up here who are real ***holes."

Other early victims of Mohr's sarcasm included Harmonix cofounder Alex Rigopoulos and Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski. Richard "Lord British" Garriott was singled out for particular ridicule. "This guy spent $30 million to go into space," joked the comedian, "Maybe he should have spent that money on [his failed MMORPG] Tabula Rasa!"

But unlike Jamie Kennedy, with his infamous nerd-bashing at E3 2007, Mohr actually displayed a knowledge of gaming. He made jokes that former Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison's takeover of Atari was akin to salvaging the Titanic, and pointed out that Leonardo DiCaprio is now playing company founder Nolan Bushnell in a forthcoming Atari film.

"Did anyone here actually finish Fallout 3?" he then asked of the crowd, before poking fun at Bethesda Softworks' Todd Howard. "100 hours of gameplay? How much time do you think we have?" Shortly after, when Media Molecule's Alex Evans took the stage, Mohr mockingly referred to the pale Briton as "that guy from Trainspotting."

But it was Media Molecule that had the last laugh. Its adorable platformer Little Big Planet was the big winner of the evening with eight awards, including Family Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering, Outstanding Character Performance, Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, Console Game of the Year, and the big kahuna, Overall Game of the Year.

Valve's Left 4 Dead snagged two major prizes in the form of Computer Game of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Online Game Play, with Fallout 3 nabbing Outstanding Achievement in Original Story and Best Role-Playing Game. Two surprise winners from EA were Dead Space, which took home Action Game of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design, and Mirror's Edge, which won Adventure Game of the Year.

Despite the comic tone of the night, the ceremony took a moving turn when Bruce Shelley, cofounder of the now-defunct Ensemble Studios, was inducted into the AIAS Hall of Fame. The developer, who had just delivered an unflinching postmortem of his studio's recent demise, was given a standing ovation when he took the stage.

Another interesting moment came when BioWare's Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk presented the award for Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year. The winner was World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King--the expansion to the massively multiplayer game that BioWare will fiercely challenge next year with its own epic MMORPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic. When Blizzard vice president Rob Pardo took the stage to accept the statuette, the two soon-to-be archrivals greeted each other cooly, perhaps auguring the battle to come.

The full list of finalists for the 12th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards is below--winners are highlighted in bold.

halo_wars86 youre just a sad fanboy. Im 26 years old. I play LBP every evening with my wife, the game is extremely addicting and creative. Even my friends that only play FPS and fighting games appreciate the genius behind LBP; your comments about being a kiddie game are so retarded. And you want to know how I figured out that youre an xbot, because only fanboys care about SALES!!!! Sales /= Quality

Seriously, MGS4 only for Best Original Sound? It definitely deserved character, graphics awards.

Im glad LBP won the awards and received the recognition. Sure it didn't sell the most, but sometimes it's not always about sales, but about gameplay, style, innovation, visuals, sound, etc. I'm surprised that MGS4 didn't take it however, because it had all of that as well, but then again it would be weird if LBP won most of the awards and then not winning GOTY. MGS4 I thought should've won more. Also, for those that say LBP is just a kids game, if you've ever played or seen what levels people come up with, you know a little kid did not make that. Sure sackboy is cute and what not but the levels themselves are rather complex and many people out there took a lot of time to create sweet levels that are works of art.

Ok, I’m going to try to make this short as possible. There were so many great games in 2008, but only 4 stood out of the pack - and actually deserved the game of the year award. Those 4 are: Grand Theft Auto 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, Fallout 3 and Little Big Planet. I own all 4. Beat them all. I have 100% in gta 4, the platinum trophy for fallout 3, all levels aced in lbp, you name it. I have played these games enough to know what I’m talking about. That being said, I think Little Big Planet is the best of the four. Little Big Planet gets so many things right on the first try - it’s just ingenious. From the casual to the most hardcore, old or young, you will find something for you in this game. If you have played the game you know what I’m talking about; and if you haven’t, then let me tell you that you are missing out on not only the best game of 2008 but the best game this current generation has to offer. I am really glad and thankful that D.I.C.E. had the balls not only to recognize, but also to properly award Little Big Planet for all its accomplishments. Because it seems like every other major website/magazine/award show is afraid of being ridicule (I’m guessing?) for giving the goty award to a “kiddy” game. I wish they’d grow some balls, get over that bs and do what’s right - not what’s cool or what will be accepted by the majority or a certain group of people. Every single award lbp got is well deserved. Little Big Planet IS that good. If you haven’t played the game, again, you are missing out on what in my opinion is the best game of this console generation.

Gears 2 got nominated for online play? I heard it was nothing but a big glitch-fest....at least Resistance 2, a game which it was compared to quite a bit, didn't have the same type of online issues that Gears 2 had/has.

I agree with most, but LBP is, in my opinion CRAP. And it's lackluster sales performance would show that I'm not the only person to think that. I bought into the hype and got it day 1, now I play it less than my PSP games.

A precursory glance over the list makes me think these guys know what they're talking about... with games like LBP, Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3 cleaning up... games like NHL 09, Rock Band 2, Dead Space and Super Smash Bros getting deserved nods and GTA IV getting the honor of just being nominated that it deserves.

OMG someone said LBP only sold 1 million. Well its not about sales, its about achievement and LBP was thankfully under appreaciated and its for the smart to enjoy and if you miss out then good for you. Just because you thought something like Gears 2, or Fallout 3 deserves to win just means there is more fanboys. What do you mean LBP won because of fanboys if not many PS3 owners bought it? Hopefully more people will go play LBP because it never seized to amaze me. Sales never have to do with something winning the Oscar, look at The Dark Knight.

@castalos: Oh yeah, Sins of a Solar Empire blew RA3 out of the water in terms of strategy. I loved RA3, and Endwar, but what they gave in accessiblity they gave up in strategic complexity. SSE was a true strategy stroke of genius. Valkyria Chronicles was a better game than both, but SSE wins in terms of pure strategy.

MGS4 is the big loser, wow. Everybody thought that it would clean up, but even though acknowledged, that's clearly not how the creator thought the night would wind up. He has got to be seething! LBP was a waste of my $60,... boring. I tried, I really tried, but my patients for little cute things has vanished with age.

While it was not my personal favourite, LBP was one hell of a game. Given that a lot of these awards touch on some form of innovation, LBP was kind of a shoe in. Prince of Persia definitely deserved the artwork win, if you play it with the flow intended the whole game is basically a visual treat. One huge miss however: Where was Valkyria Chronicles? I've never seen such an amazingly good game be so totally overlooked. Even Psychonauts got more underground recognition. Still, it's good to see that Fallout 3 got recognition for its story, but even though GoW 2 wasn't a quantum leap in terms of gameplay, it still was a better game than a LOT of others.. but against Dead Space, LBP, Fallout 3, and LBP, a straight sequel never had a chance.

Yup. Little Big Planet and MGS4 were the reasons my Xbox remained un-repaired this year. Definitely well deserved. I can't remember how many hours I sat down creating my own levels...great game. I still need to pick up Fallout 3. I disagree with the Prince of Persia pick for animation...It's just cell shading which set it apart. MGS4 had way better animation, smoother frame rate and more detail..just my opinion

@ JMD wow saying that sony payed for awards 1. microsoft payed $50 mil for GTA DLC exclusivity 2. Microsoft also payed for fallout 3 DLC 3. LBP and MGS4 are both PS3 exclusives way to have a very xbox biased point of veiw bud, you "fanboy" is showing fallout 3 got the awards it deserved, with less things to do than fallout 1 and 2 it didn't deserve all of the awards that everyone is saying it should've you beat the game once and you get too bored of it to play it again. MSG4 should have won awards i think everyone here should agree to that, if not than you need to buy the game before claiming, "OMG OMG LBP FTW GOTY" Really?

Little Big Planet is an excellent game. Halo War 86 shows how ignorance works. comparing and slamming the game without even playing it? uh, yeah. Anyway, it is a game that just keeps on giving and in the end is worth more than its $60.00 price tag. Great Work Media Molecule!

There were a lot of great games in 2008 which stood out as a banner year for developers. LBP was an unique gaming experience and broke the mold in the game gender. Lots of great nominees and hope that 2009 turns out as well.

I'm not at all too upset LBP took a lot of these awards, it deserved a good amount of recognition, sure it wasn't the kind of game I play hour after hour, day after day, week after week, but it has a charm about it that goes unmatch, I thought it was deserving of the OVERALL, GOTY, DIRECTION, FAMILY, and INNOVATION awards, though I thought the visual should have gone to Dead Space or MGS4 since they were nominated for a lot and didn't win enough, and even though I didn't like MGS4 I have to admit the visual design of the game was excellent

halo_wars86... "no its a kids game. i will never play this game." Super Mario Galaxy was a kids game, Orcarina of Time was a kids game. Some of the best games ever made were orientated towards a very broad audience, and though I agree that Fallout 3 and MGS 4 are excellent games, don't you think they've garnered plenty enough credit in the dozens of other award ceremonies?

'Grats, LBP! You rock! Brawl FINALLY won an award from somewhere (it's about time)! My only complaints are the lack of MGS4 awards and The World Ends with You not even being nominated for best handheld game.

I agree with most of these except for Dead Space winning Action Game of the Year. That was some pretty heavy competition and, mostly due to my personal tastes of course, I think every one of the other games should have beat it. But definately grats to Little Big Planet...I don't own a PS3 but that game made me wish I did :)

@ShirkDawg - "These awards are a joke. Lost Odyssey isn't even up there for best story? Get out of here. That game also had some of the best art in '08." Lost Odyssey was waaaay to much cutscene and no gameplay, it's been a typical problem with next gen JRPGs these days, I'd say the same thing of MGS4 too but MGS4 was important piece of ammo in the console wars, Lost Odyssey was also a piece of that "exclusive" dialogue but Lost Odyssey was never flagship in the console war as much as MGS4 was, if Lost Odyssey would have gotten no recognition it wouldn't have hurt the X360 in the slightest, if MGS4 had failed top notch recognition it would have flattened the PS3's growth until Christmas, I'm probably going to get unanimously thumbed down for saying so but the only reason I think MGS4 got the recognition it did was in fear that criticism of the game would cause the passion of the fanboy wars to kill subscriptions to publications that didn't give it a great review, hell, review critics would have probably gotten death threats, wouldn't be that far out of the realm of possibility since people were issuing death threats against poor Kojima when he announced he'd have less of a part in the creation of MGS4, which reversed itself after said death threats... oh god, I'm gonna get a death threat aren't I :o

Thoroughly, thoroughly deserved for LBP - it's an excellent game. Great to see L4D in a few categories too.... I only just got that game and it's both blown me away and terrified me over the last few nights(!)
