Little Big Planet wins big at D.I.C.E.

Media Molecule's adorable platformer cleans up with eight Interactive Achievement Awards, including Overall Game of the Year; Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, and Dead Space rack up two each.

LAS VEGAS--The first 24 hours of the 2009 D.I.C.E. Summit were all business, with presentations from Valve founder Gabe Newell, Capcom creative director Jun Takeuchi, and Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello. Tonight, though, the annual game-industry confab, noted for its exclusivity and insider access, got its glamour on with the 12th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.

Jay Mohr hams it up.
Jay Mohr hams it up.

Dually doled out by D.I.C.E. organizers the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences and the International Game Developers Association, the Interactive Achievement Awards stand in stark contrast to the Spike TV Video Game Awards. Whereas that event embraces the notion of games as hip and youthful entertainment, the IAA show is a more Oscar-esque attempt at seriously acknowledging the growing medium.

If there is a breach in the IAA's high-class facade, it is the blue humor of comedian Jay Mohr, who emceed the ceremony for the fourth year running. Despite the disparity, Mohr has proven to be a popular part of the program, even as he ruthlessly mocked the crowd as a crowd of "guys and blow-up dolls."

"We're going to give out some awards to some people who deserve them, and some who quite frankly do not deserve them," Mohr joked. "Some people are gonna come up here who are real ***holes."

Other early victims of Mohr's sarcasm included Harmonix cofounder Alex Rigopoulos and Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski. Richard "Lord British" Garriott was singled out for particular ridicule. "This guy spent $30 million to go into space," joked the comedian, "Maybe he should have spent that money on [his failed MMORPG] Tabula Rasa!"

But unlike Jamie Kennedy, with his infamous nerd-bashing at E3 2007, Mohr actually displayed a knowledge of gaming. He made jokes that former Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison's takeover of Atari was akin to salvaging the Titanic, and pointed out that Leonardo DiCaprio is now playing company founder Nolan Bushnell in a forthcoming Atari film.

"Did anyone here actually finish Fallout 3?" he then asked of the crowd, before poking fun at Bethesda Softworks' Todd Howard. "100 hours of gameplay? How much time do you think we have?" Shortly after, when Media Molecule's Alex Evans took the stage, Mohr mockingly referred to the pale Briton as "that guy from Trainspotting."

But it was Media Molecule that had the last laugh. Its adorable platformer Little Big Planet was the big winner of the evening with eight awards, including Family Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering, Outstanding Character Performance, Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, Console Game of the Year, and the big kahuna, Overall Game of the Year.

Valve's Left 4 Dead snagged two major prizes in the form of Computer Game of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Online Game Play, with Fallout 3 nabbing Outstanding Achievement in Original Story and Best Role-Playing Game. Two surprise winners from EA were Dead Space, which took home Action Game of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design, and Mirror's Edge, which won Adventure Game of the Year.

Despite the comic tone of the night, the ceremony took a moving turn when Bruce Shelley, cofounder of the now-defunct Ensemble Studios, was inducted into the AIAS Hall of Fame. The developer, who had just delivered an unflinching postmortem of his studio's recent demise, was given a standing ovation when he took the stage.

Another interesting moment came when BioWare's Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk presented the award for Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year. The winner was World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King--the expansion to the massively multiplayer game that BioWare will fiercely challenge next year with its own epic MMORPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic. When Blizzard vice president Rob Pardo took the stage to accept the statuette, the two soon-to-be archrivals greeted each other cooly, perhaps auguring the battle to come.

The full list of finalists for the 12th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards is below--winners are highlighted in bold.

I cant understand why MGS4 did not get its deserved place. Didnt we feel this game with our heart? I cant even compare mgs4 with gta4 coz mgs4 is more intense, let alone LBP.....sigh....

Wow im amazed LBP.. Its has to be one of the worst games i have ever played, [NOT A 360 FAN BOY] I had high hopes for MGS4 which is the best game and took 20 f***ing years to develop. Konami was ripped off and LBP is horrible and can never be classed as a serious game unless you are 6 years of age. I agree with DeadnBuried totally and if you wanna ass f**k this game then go ahead but i can't believe the DICE awards, what a joke. Video gaming has lost the thrill it used to give me and this has down graded it even more... MGS4 is a masterpiece and LBP is some Psychopaths creation. I could rant all day but i have better things to do like F**k my GF Good bye.

Yeah, LBP did deserve a lot of them but I would have given art direction to Mirror's Edge, along with Adventure game of the year.

These awards are meaningless outside the industry, I doubt there will be a spike in sales for LBP now, if you want it you have already got it. But if you have not, it's only £14.99 at Blockbuster.

I can't see why LBP won so much. I'll agree with Outstranding Innovation and Best Family game, and some of the others *too lazy to scroll back up* but there's no way it deserved all of them. I got it for christmas and played it for a while, but that was it, i've never wanted to play it since! The creativity's great, and the art direction, but at the end of the day it's just a platformer, you run and jump from the left side of the screen to the right side. There's no story to it, and Sackboy has no character because he doesn't say a word, sure he's a bit cute and you can dress him how you want, but he has no character, so "Outstanding Character Performance" is a bit ridiculous. MGS4 should've won waaaaaay more, it's one of the very very few games of 08 that had any feeling to it, one of the few games that bothered to tell a story and make us gamers feel something again. One of the few PS3 games at least....Still haven't had the chance to get a 360.

Obviously, for anyone to think games like MGS4 or Gears of War or any of those other games that have been done before believe they should have done better. Well then you guys really don't know much about video games. The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences looks at games for originality, art design, and creativity. LBP falls under all those categorys. It is also a game that can be enjoyed by everyone, and it offers one of the best (if not THE best) creativity tools in existence of video games. The only game I would consider to have beaten this game is Fallout 3, but sadly it didn't.

Which is a very kind way of saying that, like other trade awards they are self-servin and self-aggrandizing. The times they get something right don't make up for the overall nature of the event. People need to calm down and remember that this simply reflects the opinions of a handful of people you probably never met and don't care about.

Little Big Planet better than Fallout 3, GTA IV, and MGS4? My ass..... Little Big Planet is only entertaining when you're online with other people or doing it with other friends. What if someone bought LBP with no internet and didn't have a friend to play with all of the time? I could go on and on about how LBP doesn't deserve Game Of The Year.... This is bullcrap. Who's the effing morons responsible for this? Seriously....

Seems like a nice little award ceremony and Littlebigplanet does seem like a nice game but wtf happened to Metal gear solid 4? Metal Gear Solid should have won most of the awards and maybe even gotten GOTY. Some of these people rating the game are only business men and know nothing about gaming.

I think these comments here explain why this an "insiders" award presentation. It's just like the Academy Awards for movies... all voted on by people in the industry, not by people who buy the tickets. As for the fanboys... these awards have nothing to do with what systems the games are on. It seems to me that most people think the industry is 360 biased, but LBP is a PS3 exclusive. Besides I think being nominated is a great honor for most of these developers.

Ugh what a joke. LBP is pretty innovative in its design and ambition but thats about it. Floaty platforming is bad platforming and LBP is floaty as heck. Just like the Oscars are a joke so is DICE.

LBP doesn't deserve all those awards. Maybe about 4 or 5 because it is an amazing game but come on. Best character, best visual engineering, and most innovative? BS

LMFAO how the heck does SackBoy get the Outstanding Character Performance??? Some bad choices this year. LBP is awesome but MSG4 or even GTAIV should have gotten Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering. I also argue that LBP deserves Outstanding Innovation in Gaming. They executed the idea well, but it is far from an original concept. Spore, Braid, or the even underrated Wii Fit deserve it. Well maybe next year will make more sense.

I think gta iv deserved goty hands down and if not, then mgs4. Little big planet is a great game though but gta iv rules. With exclusives like mgs4, kz2, gow3, res 2, uncharted and lbp, how can any ps3 owner not be satisfied? However, I will continue to play multi-platform games on my 360 (achievements and better online). I'm happy left 4 dead got the multiplayer award. That is an unbelievable and addictive online experience at worst!

Wow, congrats to LBP, they sure cleaned up these awards lol. Although my personal preference would have been MGS4 for GOTY, but I'm not going to complain.

I love Left 4 dead and I'm happy that it won the pc game of the year award but, come on..Mass Effect was beautiful.

LBP takes the creation aspects of games like The Sims or Spore and turns it into something 10x more awesome. Cheers to MM for the awards.
