Little Big Planet wins big at D.I.C.E.

Media Molecule's adorable platformer cleans up with eight Interactive Achievement Awards, including Overall Game of the Year; Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, and Dead Space rack up two each.

LAS VEGAS--The first 24 hours of the 2009 D.I.C.E. Summit were all business, with presentations from Valve founder Gabe Newell, Capcom creative director Jun Takeuchi, and Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello. Tonight, though, the annual game-industry confab, noted for its exclusivity and insider access, got its glamour on with the 12th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards.

Jay Mohr hams it up.
Jay Mohr hams it up.

Dually doled out by D.I.C.E. organizers the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences and the International Game Developers Association, the Interactive Achievement Awards stand in stark contrast to the Spike TV Video Game Awards. Whereas that event embraces the notion of games as hip and youthful entertainment, the IAA show is a more Oscar-esque attempt at seriously acknowledging the growing medium.

If there is a breach in the IAA's high-class facade, it is the blue humor of comedian Jay Mohr, who emceed the ceremony for the fourth year running. Despite the disparity, Mohr has proven to be a popular part of the program, even as he ruthlessly mocked the crowd as a crowd of "guys and blow-up dolls."

"We're going to give out some awards to some people who deserve them, and some who quite frankly do not deserve them," Mohr joked. "Some people are gonna come up here who are real ***holes."

Other early victims of Mohr's sarcasm included Harmonix cofounder Alex Rigopoulos and Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski. Richard "Lord British" Garriott was singled out for particular ridicule. "This guy spent $30 million to go into space," joked the comedian, "Maybe he should have spent that money on [his failed MMORPG] Tabula Rasa!"

But unlike Jamie Kennedy, with his infamous nerd-bashing at E3 2007, Mohr actually displayed a knowledge of gaming. He made jokes that former Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison's takeover of Atari was akin to salvaging the Titanic, and pointed out that Leonardo DiCaprio is now playing company founder Nolan Bushnell in a forthcoming Atari film.

"Did anyone here actually finish Fallout 3?" he then asked of the crowd, before poking fun at Bethesda Softworks' Todd Howard. "100 hours of gameplay? How much time do you think we have?" Shortly after, when Media Molecule's Alex Evans took the stage, Mohr mockingly referred to the pale Briton as "that guy from Trainspotting."

But it was Media Molecule that had the last laugh. Its adorable platformer Little Big Planet was the big winner of the evening with eight awards, including Family Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering, Outstanding Character Performance, Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, Console Game of the Year, and the big kahuna, Overall Game of the Year.

Valve's Left 4 Dead snagged two major prizes in the form of Computer Game of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Online Game Play, with Fallout 3 nabbing Outstanding Achievement in Original Story and Best Role-Playing Game. Two surprise winners from EA were Dead Space, which took home Action Game of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design, and Mirror's Edge, which won Adventure Game of the Year.

Despite the comic tone of the night, the ceremony took a moving turn when Bruce Shelley, cofounder of the now-defunct Ensemble Studios, was inducted into the AIAS Hall of Fame. The developer, who had just delivered an unflinching postmortem of his studio's recent demise, was given a standing ovation when he took the stage.

Another interesting moment came when BioWare's Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk presented the award for Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year. The winner was World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King--the expansion to the massively multiplayer game that BioWare will fiercely challenge next year with its own epic MMORPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic. When Blizzard vice president Rob Pardo took the stage to accept the statuette, the two soon-to-be archrivals greeted each other cooly, perhaps auguring the battle to come.

The full list of finalists for the 12th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards is below--winners are highlighted in bold.

That's INSANE! I knew LBP was the right choice. Well, it looks like people haven't really posted here in quite a while. So... I got the GOTY edition of LBP a few months ago. It was actually better than the PSP version just I don't like that camera

@gameking5000 LBP has sold less than MGS4 first of all second of all the MG series has been around for 20 years, they don't need to appeal to everyone they have a large fanbase. LBP is a new fresh idea and it's nice but seeing as I own both I have to say MGS4 is the better game. @sackboy15 LBP has better graphics than MGS4? i think everyone should just ignore that bias statment coming from "Sackboy"

i wanna ps3 to get lbp lol! 10-20 new levels a week sound pretty awesome, I like games that dont have an end or are replayable (Im a big fan of mmorpg's). Dead Space is the best horror game to be released during 2008, it completely smashed everything. And EA GAMES MADE IT!!! Anyone remember MoH? yeah that sucked bad. But now we can concragulate them on making such an awesome game!

The variety of the audience targeted in Metal Gear Solid 4 is not very big and that will lower the sales. Little Big Planet on the other hand is targeted for basically everybody.

I watched it and it was screwed up. Yeah it's a good game but they obviously were playing favorites with this game. Honestly when you say LBP has better graphics and character performance than MGS4 you are playing favorites.

I'm surprised that Gears 2 and MGS4 didn't dominate. Sackboy was a stronger character? :S whaaaa? I love LBP though, and am glad it scored big.

LittleBigPlanet? How could that possibly win over Metal Gear Solid 4 as Game Of The Year? I own both, and I did enjoy LBP for about a week, but Metal Gear is so vastly superior in EVERY way.

This article got me thinking... With Little Big Planet winning so many awards among game developers, but with its contenders in the categories above winning similar awards among gamers and game reviewers, does this fact points to the possibility that your average gamer, professional developers and product reviewers are all out of touch with each other? If this is the case, then this is proof that electronic games are works of art. Beauty in the eyes of the beholder, see?

Red Alert 3 for Strategy Simulation of the Year? And in the face of competition with superior production values like Sins of a Solar Empire? You got to be kidding me! If I were any less rational, I would be accusing the judges of being paid off by EA! But yay for selecting World of Goo as the winner of one category. That game ought to earn professional commendations. I am glad too that Dead Space won in a few categories, along with Fallout 3. Those are gems of games.

People who say that LBP is babyish should swallow their pride. Who cares how it is presented (I don't think they could have presented it much better myself), it is now one of the greatest games of all time thanks to its innovation and variety and if a game that fresh does not deserve all of the awards it has received, then what does?

I'm a PS3, 360 and Wii owner, just look at my pictures in my profile, you can see all 3 of the consoles, I never mentioned anything about sales. @puppiemaster seems i gotta tell you the same thing i told JMD. your "fanboy is showing". seriously where did u get a fact like "ps3 owner are 1% of the gaming population" when there are 23 million sold, 28 million 360s, and 38 million wiis. somone failed math. also im nothicing that anyone who dares comment agsinst the almighty LBP are getting masses of thumbs downs. Lemme say this. as a person who has been playing games since the NES, i think i speak for everyone when i say that everyone loving LBP to bits is a casual gamer. sure it's innovative, sure it's cute, and sure it's fun, but there are a LOT of crappy levels on LBP,there are also a lot of the same levels, there are also lag issues. people saying that they play the game every day are either A) lying cuz they are fanboys or B) playing for an hour every night. I didn't spend nearly 500 dallors on a system to play games that get boring after a couple weeks play. That's what we call lack of replayability. Furthermore comparing this game to MGS4 is a bit much. they are 2 different genres. although i would agree that MGS4 should have won GOTY as well as best character design, LBP is a breathe of fresh air. just a breathe though. what i'm trying to say is let's be intelligent about what we say on these comments. On the games used as example on this little arguement. My OPINION is that LBP is good for the casual gamer or the crack addict that likes to build stuff. Gears 2 is really Gears 1.2 with crappy online issues, MGS4 is a masterpiece and an end to a saga, and fallout 3 is a great game to screw around in. in terms of "innovation" what LBP did was make sample of what the game could do as main levels, and gave the player the oppurtunity to do the same or better ( or worse). nothing is innovative about level creation, it's call an PC, an FPS and mods ALONG with level creators. If you disagree with me plz write back, giving me thumbs down proves that u can't argue with my opinion but don't like it. P.S. puppiemaster saying the your 70 year old mommy loves that games isn't somehing you should admit. it either says that your mom is real old or that u still live at home with her and are over 35 year old.

Lil Big Planet is a very good game.... but compared to MSG4, GTAIV, it can't compete against them. So its overrated here. And where is The World Ends With You?

See loads of people love LBP, some because they think it's a great game, others because it's on the PS3 and they think that gives them 1 over on the 360 and Wii. And loads of people think that LBP is a crap game and in my opinion they are right. But it takes all sorts to make up the world, personally I can't stand driving, fighting or sports games, but others love them. It's just lucky that Game honors don't mean jack to the average man in the street. Otherwise after some of the comments on here, we would have World War 3.

Deadspace is great, still playing it too. LBP is awesome my wife can't stop playing it, my daughters can't stop watching us play it. It's a fun, very creative, adorable game. You can tell alot of imagination, hard work, patients, time and knowledge went into this game. Im glad MGS4 wont the musical award thing, MGS has always had insane amounts of intense music that brings out what music is supposed to have....passion in it's music, feeling, drama, suspense, every damn feeling possible haha. Also, fallout 3 ftw too! haha.

@NinjaMunkey01 What about World of Warcraft. It's sold over 11 million! The 2nd expansion is one great expansion. It surely deserves to be Game of the Year.

I am happy for LBP not only because I own it but also because it came from a small studio. Proof that you don't have to be big in order to deliver something special. Hope remains then for the all the small studios out there. These are the people, where fresh ideas come from. Well deserved Media Molecule.

You gotta understand. This award show wasn’t necessarily for the funniest or best games, but the most groundbreaking and innovating.
