LA Noire Switch Download Doesn't Fit On System Storage

Even the cartridge version requires a huge day one update.

132 Comments

LA Noire is coming to Nintendo Switch in just a few days, but you may have some difficulty in playing the game if you don't own an SD card. The Eshop version of LA Noire for Switch comes in at 29 GB, making it too big to fit on the console's internal memory.

The Switch contains 32 GB of storage built in, but Nintendo states "6.2 GB of internal memory is reserved for use by the system." That means you'll need to buy extra storage if you want to download the 1940s detective game to your Switch.

Now Playing: GS News Update: LA Noire Switch Download Doesn't Fit On System Memory

The cartridge version, meanwhile, needs a 14 GB day one update. The patch contains "required gameplay data as well as general bug fixes and improvements." However, the physical edition of LA Noire for Switch is apparently more expensive than the digital one.

For comparison, Bethesda told Rolling Stone that Doom's upcoming Switch port has a campaign and arcade mode that "fit on a 16 GB cartridge," though the multiplayer mode is a separate 9 GB download. We don't yet know how big the total game will be if you were to purchase it from the Eshop.

Nintendo's own games, meanwhile, tend to be much smaller in size. Super Mario Odyssey's download version is 5.2 GB in total, while Splatoon 2 is 3.1 GB and Arms just 2.2 GB.

LA Noire is Rockstar's first game for Nintendo's console. It's coming to the hybrid device on November 14, alongside new PS4 and Xbox One versions. For more on those, check out some 4K LA Noire gameplay.

The original on 360 was 3 discs. 4 if you bought the Complete Edition. I don't think anyone is surprised by this. But wow, been awhile since I had to worry about memory cards for a game system. Not sure I want to start again. I know I know SD Cards are cheap so what's the problem, right? The problem is, SD Cards are cheap so there is no reason for the Switch to be limited to 32GB. They could have put in 500GB of storage for an extra $40. My phone has more storage than a current gen console. That's pathetic.

@kaminobenimizu: It's because the ps3 used bluray and the xbox 360 used dvd. Ps3 could fit everything on one disc. Xbox 360 could not.

@risingdawn: Where do I mention the Vita or 3DS in my comment? If the Xbox One required memory cards the internet would catch fire. And handhelds are slightly different than consoles - even if it is a hybrid. And like I said, my cell phone has 128GB of storage. My. Phone.

this is why NS won't really win back those of us Nintendo left behind so long ago.....

the new Zelda, new Mario and Metroid Prime 4 all sound good but the specs for the system leave a lot to be desired......

@MJ12-Conspiracy: pure tripe.

As a PC player, I think the specs the PS4 and XBone have are a really sad, unfunny joke. I think your 30 FPS on games I can run maxed at 144hz are pathetic. Your dynamic resolution, motion blur, and all the other tricks they use to fool you into thinking you're looking at something impressive are really pretty sad.

Nintendo is the only console developer that I take seriously, because they make amazing games.

If you think specs are a reason to buy a piece of hardware in a format that ALWAYS compromises performance then their point has flown so far over and past your head it's probably best you focus on something you've got a bit more perspective on. If you wanted the best performance and the best specs you wouldn't even mention consoles, because you're already down in it.

@Richardthe3rd: power matters moron and when a device can't even match the current generation of consoles and they have to sacrifice even more for a fracking gimmick it's a joke....

there's nothing wrong with PS4, it out performs X1 the stock systems....and 30FPS?? not many games actually run that low on PS4, maybe on X1 but not on PS4.....

and don't try and sell me on your NAZI elitist rhetoric.....PC is more of an elitist paradise and people like you ruined it for the rest of us with the NAZI slogans.....master race my ass, frack off with that crap....

also the logic of a portable console is moronic, hey let's waste $300 on a thing that can't even match the current consoles so we can take it on the road....yet only play for 2 hours and have games the size of quarters which can be easily lost and hey it's not that easy to actually carry cus it kinda fits in your pocket.......if you wear bulky cargo jeans and even then it's too big but yeah, say you're doing laundry at a laundry mat and you gotta leave a piss right?? what do you do?? carry it with you and set it on something as you take care of business, not so convenient then right?? cus you can't just leave it sitting out.....pfft

and I don't have perspective?? oh I see the big picture just fine, this is typical Nintendo making things hard for gamers and third party just to be different....that's what ruins things every goddamn time.....

it is about games but it's also about the hardware, the 2 go hand in hand and if the hardware is lacking the games suffer for it, if the games suck then so does the hardware but they always make sure THEY know the hardware and not third party so yeah....i stand by my assessments....NS isn't anything I'll be buying....have fun at the Nazi rally Herr Himler.....

@MJ12-Conspiracy: "power matters moron"

Stopped reading your inane bullshit there.

If power mattered you wouldn't be spending piddly amounts of money on half-assed DRM boxes like the PS4 and X1...

At least Nintendo does something different. X1 and PS4 need WAY more power than they have. Complete pieces of shit in the worst gen of consoles the world has ever seen.

Enjoy your Stockholm Syndrome and watered down 30 FPS bullshit.

@lim30041982: Sony and MS would trade almost any and all of their exclusives for Mario or Zelda to be on their consoles. Either one of those IPs is arguably more valuable and recognizable than the XBOX or PS brands.

Stop kidding yourself.

@lim30041982: LOL a food analogy! HOW ADORABLE. It's almost as though it's relevant to the argument I made and not just anecdotal BS!

PS, no one outside of gamers know jack shit about any of the IPs you listed, and they won't be taking Mario or Link's place next to Micky Mouse and Bugs Bunny in pop culture any time soon.

Stop kidding yourself.

PS: early reports are showing that the Switch is actually outpacing the PS4's sales when it released, namely in its first 26 weeks of release.

@MJ12-Conspiracy:

Well apart from the fact you have to install every disc game to storage, oh and always leave about 50gig free space so that games can actually update, oh yeah and then you have to reinstall the disc games you deleted to fit on the newest disc game you bought that you now need to delete..you can fit about 8 games on a ps4 storage.

You realise every handheld that has ever had access to an online store has needed a memory card right?

And that Sony charge 5x the price for proprietary ones right?

And that even an android mobile phone needs an SD card right?

Didn't we just praise Nintendo for using cheap affordable micro sd memory cards? I guess it's time to ignore that and start complaining again. Cue eye roll. I see the sharks have smelled blood in the water and they're here to doom Nintendo again. I feel like they just wait for any little news and jump on it. This is literally not news. System memory can hold this. Cheap micro sd cards can hold this. What exactly is the problem? Gamers...you deserve your loot boxes and microtransaction filled garbage.

Just the usual brand hate trolls, got all salty after Switch didn't fail, then released the 2 best games of this consoles generation. So they thought they'd jump on Switch needing a memory card ignoring the fact Vita PSP 3DS and their sodding phones all need a memory card because it doesn't prove their point..

How do people manage all this. Sounds so inconvenient. Digital folks are forced to go physical w/ SD cards. It's impossible to be digital only. You'll have to put name tags on your SD card and even if you went physical you have to have double the amount of cards/cartridges.

A true home console, huh? Ridiculous though that the remaster of a last gen game gets a 14gb day 1 patch. While Doom, which I just downloaded again and which takes up almost 80gb on the PS4, takes up less space. Weird, but irrelevant to anyone but Switch owners.

@Atzenkiller: You can be certain that the smaller file size for doom is because of reduced graphics quality. There's no other way it would work.

@Zorlac: And LA Noire has superior graphics? How big were the original PS3 and X360 versions? How could a remaster of a last gen game possibly be bigger than an already really big current gen one? Part of Doom's size comes from the dlcs, which are now all free, but I'm sure the Switch version has them included as well.

@Atzenkiller: LA Noire likely does have updated graphics at the very least, it also has a LOT of voice files. a LOT more than doom does which can greatly add to the file size.

@Zorlac: As if. Some games offer voice overs in different languages as an extra download and it usually isn't more than 1gb or so. With how big games have become voice overs barely add anything to it nowadays, pre rendered cutscenes in 1080p or 4K do though. But I don't remember LA Noire having any of those either.

@Atzenkiller: This is also LA Noire 8 years later with updated visual and audio quality. What makes you think they wouldn't update the graphics after that long a period of time?

The point stands though. The Switch Hard drive is way too small.

literally no value in this smh. It's always a catch to Nintendo products. They make wonderful games because they have mastered the formula given that it's been the same franchises for over 20 years. And I'm cool with that. But the hardware has always seemed to be the most awkward parts to of the Nintendo "experience". And why in the hell does the console not come with an SD Card?

@Bread_or_Decide: They actually require an install, but they also provide you with a hard drive that you can install more than one game on. While I agree that this is a petty reason to pick on nintendo about, it was also pretty stupid of nintendo to only include 32gb of storage. That hasn't been enough in over 10 years, so what crazy person thought it would be enough now?

@Zorlac: I agree that 32GB is a bit ridiculous in this day and age but the thing is; NAND memory is an expensive component unlike the HDDs you find in the other consoles. So if Nintendo was offering much more respectable storage (like 128GB for an example) then the Switch would have been much more expensive and people would then be whining about that.

I think in the end for its time Nintendo made the right choice for storage on the Switch but I also think they should have and should really soon start to offer models with higher storage capacities. That and SD cards are getting cheaper every year so I really don't see this as such a major issue.

@Zorlac: I'm guessing the cost of the memory is a problem for Nintendo for some reason. But at least their solution is cheap and sensible. Is it a problem? Sure. Is the solution easy? Also yes. Since I mostly do physical this doesn't bother me much. And when I need more space that problem is easily solved. Considering the real crap gamers put up with, the bandwagon complaints in the comments are ridiculous and straight up pathetic.

@Bread_or_Decide: While I agree the complaints are excessive you HAVE to look at people's gaming habits besides your own when complaining about or defending this. A VERY large portion of gamers do digital only these days (On PC, and Xbox I haven't bought a physical game in over a year, the last being the Overwatch collectors edition). So for those people 32gb is nothing, especially when a game takes up more than that amount.

Again, I agree that it's an easy solution, but depending on how many games someone buys, or how big they are it can end up being a costly one in the long run. (for gamers, obviously not for nintendo since they took the easy way out). Also i do have a switch, so I have a very valid stance on what I'm saying here.
