Kinect sells 2.5 million in 25 days

Microsoft says its motion-sensing system is on track to hit 5 million units sold by year's end.

Hot on the heels of Nintendo's announcement that it had sold 1.5 million units of hardware over the Black Friday/Thanksgiving weekend, Microsoft has struck back with some sales numbers of its own. Today, the software giant said that its Kinect motion-sensing system has sold 2.5 million units worldwide in its first 25 days on the market. The peripheral's milestone comes in the wake of a reported $500 million marketing campaign to promote the device.

2.5 million Kinects have been sold in under a month.
2.5 million Kinects have been sold in under a month.

Microsoft said the Kinect was on track to sell 5 million by year's end, in line with the company's previously announced target. The system went on sale in North America on November 4, with its European rollout occurring November 10 and its Japanese release following on November 20.

Currently, the Kinect system is offered as a stand-alone unit for $150, a hefty premium over the device's $56 estimated cost in parts. Two bundles are also available: a $300 4GB Xbox 360 package and a $400 250GB Xbox 360 loadout. All bundles also include Kinect Adventures, just one of the 17 games that were released in November.

@sonic_pt: you're not factoring in game sales. They rake in the money on those. I'm betting EVERYONE of those sales bought at least one other game, so right there is another 2.5 million game sales, and alot of the launch titles are made/published by microsoft, again increasing profit margins. @article: After having owned one since launch, I have to say i'm not surprised. The more people THAT ACTUALLY TRY IT, the more people will buy it. I have to say I was extremely skeptical, but then my wife bought it, i used it, and now love it. It's not going to replace my FPS' or RPG's at the moment, but man is it alot of fun. And that dance central game? I hereby nominate for best Party Game Ever.. and i HATE dancing.. lol

2.5 million people must love crappy dance games. If people buy it knowing that they'll be doing nothing but playing casual games where you wave your arms around, then great. Because that's all it can handle. I sadly shake my head when I read comments from people who think you'll be playing anything that requires actual movement, like walking, running, or turning through in a game world. They must think Kinect is a holodeck.

I hope everyone realizes, come the end of Dec., they will say they sold at least 5 million whether it's true or not. We have no way of knowing the real numbers.

"the device's $56 estimated cost in parts" people have been pointing out what a stupid fact this is. parts. PARTS!!! what about the people who put it together or maintain the machines that put it together. what about the packing costs, shipping costs??? what about advertising costs??? what about R and D costs? These things costs millions and millions of dollars. You have to pay a guy to design it, a different guy to program it, and different guy to test it, a different guy to market it. and by guy I mean about a 10000 people. I am not defending this thing. I sure don't want one, I am just complaining about BAD news reporting.

I wish these gaming companies would give us gamers something that we Actually want! I would like to see a new Star Wars Battlefront for the PS3 and 360, with a massive multiplayer!!! Will it happen?? Not if they focus on the motion junk!

@gc88 Why? There's enough casual gamers out there to float Nintendo's boat... a small portion of them is more than enough to make Kinect profitable.

The kinect is like an ipad,,,,,,,,,,,,,,overpriced for less functionality. Someone please tell me how I will play role playing games, shooters, and platforming games on kinect? If M$ could do it, wouldn't their be at least one game out there attempting the task at hand? Why all the wii-hashed games? Give me something new and original because now its just a shovel-ware fest.

good to hear MS, don't have a xbox, but this is essentially the next gen system (along with the move). but the core hardware can't really improve any more then firm wear updates, so yeah, if these devices fail..........the industry will be in trouble. glad to see the numbers, hope its fun for those who bought one!!!!! go gaming!

@karmasbeeoch @blackace Your kinect must be special considering ever gaming web-site has said their is noticeable lag and they were being modest. That kinect webcam will never be fast enough to track fast movement. By the way, i don't even have a ps3. Just a 360 and wii. I don't care about the move, its just a HD Wii and the kinect is a wii without a controller with serious LAG. ********************************************************************************** The games I have do not have serious lag and I've been playing them for well over a week now. Maybe your were playing Uncaged Fighter which does have some bad lag. lol!! Most of the Kinect games have minimal lag that don't effect gameplay in the least. Kinect boxing responses pretty well to Kinect and that fast action. You obviously do not own a Kinect, so you have no clue. << LINK REMOVED >> As you can see, minimal lag. Doesn't effect gameplay.

How well it's doing actually surprised me, as no one I know (in an area that could afford the purchase, mind you) has bought one yet. I do know of a couple people planning to pick it up, one along with an Xbox, at Christmas, though. Maybe a couple more will get it offhand. I've just found a distinct lack of hype for it in my area, among dozens of students who own 360s.

In my opinion MS has only managed to get 1/4 of the return money, my math is this: kinect bundle = $150 from wich $56 to parts plus some for the store and you need to take a part for logistics of distribution, therefore i guess they are making around $50 per unit. Considering the $500M of advertising, devide it by $50 of profit per unit and you get 10M units that need to be sold just to get the advertisement paid, obviously I'm not considering profit from games they will sell, but if you consider the selling of Kinects only they still need to sell another 7,5M units untill "real" profit starts entering!! Considering they made 1/4 of the 10M in 25 days and we are now approching x-mas i'd say they actually seem to be doing good. They might even brake the 10M on the 2nd quarter of next year.

@karmasbeeoch, I haven't noticed any significant lag. I know it's there, but it rarely affects the gameplay. Most review sites I read did not complain of the lag in the launch titles I bought (Kinect Sports, Dance Central, and Kinect Adventures!). I can't think of any review site off the top of my head that complained of lag in Dance Central.

The only thing I don't understand why I keep hearing about is that the "component" cost is only $56 and sells for $150. It's all about recouping invested money to develop the unit. A video game costs $60 but to actually produce or make the disc, box, manual is what $5, if that? It's the development.

zzamaro I sure hope you realize that Kinect will have more upcoming games too in the future? I personally have no interest in Kinect or Move, but what I've played from a nearby Best Buy, it seems to me Kinect does have some good games. From the games I've played from Best Buy, I've played Kinect Boxing, Tennis, baseball, and Dance Central. And because Kinect has recently debuted in the gaming industry, it seems to me it's going to have plenty more games in the future. I think simple research will assist you in finding a good list of Kinect games rather than going with Microsofts popular killer app title hmmm?

karmasbeeoch Posted Nov 29, 2010 5:26 pm PT im very surprised it sold that much considering the Lag me and my friends experienced with it. Lets face it, we will never see a hardcore game on this thing. I'm glad I got to play it without spending the $. Its not worth the price. The lag is more than noticeable, its laughable! ************************************************************************************** The lag in the games are minimal at best. Some of he MOVE games are even more laggie then the Kinect. There's almost no lag with Dance Central at all. My nieces are playing it right now. lol!! The game is awesome and every one of my family members have enjoyed the 3 games I have (DC, Kinect Adv. and Kinect Sports.) It's not for everyone, but casual gamers who don't mind a little exercise will love it. It has already convinced 2 of my family members to pick up their own Kinects.

I thought that the 5 million goal was ambitious, but I've loved Dance Central so far, and it looks like I'm not the only one. More Kinect sales means more and more varied Kinect games, so I am pleased that the device is selling well.

You do realize that the 500 million marketing number is over multiple years, not all at once? They most likely are already making money off of Kinect and will be doing so from here on out.

Well if I'm not wrong, MS still needs to sell around 4-6 million more units, to actually start making money out of it, since they are spending near 400m dollars just in advertising. Personally, I will buy a Xbox this Xmas, and will only buy kinect because of the kids, because to me its just another pointless accessory.

This is no surprised. Microsoft's marketing is one of the best and it's obviously outdoing what Kevin Butler has done with the Sony MOVE, even though the Kinect cost $50 more for their bundle. I have no doubt it'll sell over 5 million by the end of the year. ************************************************************************* @svaubel While no doubt the technology is impressive, I would like to see more than a couple games for it that look worth owning. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ That's the same way I feel about the MOVE. The 3 games I have for the Kinect is enough to keep me happy until next year. There's only one MOVE game out right now worth getting. I need at least 2-3 more for me to get it.

I'm not a Sony fanboy and I "hate" kinect. Not because some people actually have fun using it but because of what it's doing to the Hardcore market. Let's face it, games these days are being half-assed by developers because casuals and non-gamers wouldn't know the difference between quality and a piece of crap game. Like I said, I'm fine with it existing, I just don't like what it's doing to developer's minds.

@grey_fox1984, At this point, you're right. But, Kinect does have its fanboys and irrational detractors. Personally, I'm pleased with the hardware and excited about the upcoming games (which include a bunch of new pieces of intellectual property). The potential is there, but the jury is still out. I'm less optimistic about the Move. I was thinking about getting one. However, the only two titles that I want are Sports Champions and Tumble (and I already have Kinect Sports and Boom Blox Bash Party, so the two Move games might not get much play). I'm going to hold off until more Move-only games are announced. I don't want to play RE5 or SOCOM with the Move. I've played shooters and survival horror games with wand controls. It's nothing special. Without more Move-exclusive titles, the device seems less like or a platform for games and more like a NeGCon/JogCon-style accessory.

At this point I don't think you can really truly be a Kinect/Move lover or hater. Neither interface has enough software for any of us to really tell how effective they will be. Dance Central seems to be the most promising Kinect title so far, and it seems that Move doesn't have anything more entertaining than Sports Champions yet. I think the next 2 years will be what help decide the verdict... I'm STILL waiting for a truly great Wii game that utilizes motion controls- perhaps the new Zelda?
