Kinect sells 2.5 million in 25 days

Microsoft says its motion-sensing system is on track to hit 5 million units sold by year's end.

Hot on the heels of Nintendo's announcement that it had sold 1.5 million units of hardware over the Black Friday/Thanksgiving weekend, Microsoft has struck back with some sales numbers of its own. Today, the software giant said that its Kinect motion-sensing system has sold 2.5 million units worldwide in its first 25 days on the market. The peripheral's milestone comes in the wake of a reported $500 million marketing campaign to promote the device.

2.5 million Kinects have been sold in under a month.
2.5 million Kinects have been sold in under a month.

Microsoft said the Kinect was on track to sell 5 million by year's end, in line with the company's previously announced target. The system went on sale in North America on November 4, with its European rollout occurring November 10 and its Japanese release following on November 20.

Currently, the Kinect system is offered as a stand-alone unit for $150, a hefty premium over the device's $56 estimated cost in parts. Two bundles are also available: a $300 4GB Xbox 360 package and a $400 250GB Xbox 360 loadout. All bundles also include Kinect Adventures, just one of the 17 games that were released in November.

Good to hear! I had Kinect preordered and I must say that I am really impressed with its performance! It's great for bringing the family together and it's also a very good exercise for loners!! Keep it up MS !

Just because you don't know anyone who has own doesn't mean they aren't actually selling. I was skeptical but actually tried it and it works well. No lag (they eliminated most lag during the Kinect Beta). Good job MS, but as we all know, haters gonna hate!

I'm still waiting to see games where you have to wear a helmet and motion gloves like I used to see at arcades.

Microsoft says that they have sold 2.5 million units of kinect, I guess mostly all of them are the ones that they have sold to Burger King, Kellog's and god knows who else for their Kinect giveaway promotion.

It's interesting to read that Microsoft actually sells its Kinect. Especially when I have heard of no one I know who has bought one, or actually needs one

@jhermannitj You only need light for Kinect ID - the facial recognition feature that signs you in automatically. You can play in complete darkness and the sensor will still track all of your body movements.

@jhermannitj I was hustled. the thing is its fun in the day time when theres good lighting and its fully functional but winter days are short so i get a 3 hour margin for peak time to play kinect.

I'll buy it when they get to work and there is more than one decent game (Dance Central)... they better hurry before I decide to HD wii (i.e. Playstation Move). What happened to the epic launch touted by MS? Maybe they should have spent more money on MS studios development for Kinect rather than marketing and theatrics. It seemed to have worked in the short term with Kinect sales... but I wasn't hustled, how 'bout you?

the dance game looks good on it. but i'd rather just have the kinect by itself, because why would i get a 360 and a kinect for a game just used on kinect? i could get both a ps3 and wii for that money

@parrot_of_adun While I do think the games are horrible if the people who bought them like it then it's really not a awful game. For instance I think the Halo games are awful and my reason for buying a 360 had nothing to do with that series. Yet everyone else thinks there great games.

So that's 2.5 million units actually sold, not just shipped. Now that's impressive, wonder how the actual software is doing. What's needed now is a real "system seller", a "must have"-franchise starter like Halo taking full advantage of the Kinect hardware, can't really see it in any of the 2011 titles (Project Eden, Project Draco etc) yet, as good as those titles might be individually, but let's wait and see what the later half of 2011 brings with it.

Kinect Is sikk But it is limited to the content it can Provide. Owning one myself I can say YES it is very impressive however I find that it does tire me out. Dance Central is a clear example of how this technology can work correctly and also Your Shape Fitness Evolved. All in all its fantastic to see it come up but it just needs the games to drive it in the long run ! Great Work Microsoft !!

@Maxtor127 How is holding a Xbox 360 controller clumsier than using Move, the camera and a navigation controller at the same time? Hell some people don't even have a navigator which means a move + a controller; go figure. Hell the voice commands by itself can be well integrated with a controller.

So what this article says is MS still hasn't made back the money they spent on advertising? What's interesting to me is, if this trend keeps up, they will actually sell 5 million Kinects by year's end; something I really didn't think possible (and still don't, to be honest). *sigh* I guess the face of gaming has shifted from "us", those that have been gaming "before it was cool", to the new MyFace generation that consider gaming clumsily interacting with a virtual pet. The gaming community has always wished for their passion to become more mainstream. Well, it is, and I'm not really sure if it's a good thing.

And THAT'S how you sell videogames to people who never actually wanted . Sell it as a family/education/workout facilitator, then sell them awful games. They'll never even know they're just dicking around...

what nintendo wanted to say is basically : hah! so much for the kinect and move, big deal. We don't even need to improve anything to compete with you guys, we still out sell you. what is microsoft's number telling? what are they trying to say?

I doubt they are fudging the numbers considering the amount of price gouging going on ebay and Amazon.

I don't know why but for some reason I fell these sell numbers are BS and Microsoft is just saying they are selling well when they really aren't.

Excellent. More units sold -> larger userbase -> more game publishers willing to invest more money in game developers -> more games (and hopefully some new risks and gaming paradigms).

How come Thorsen can't report on ANYTHING Microsoft does without trying put a negative spin on it? That hater has been hating for 5 years. And I got mine for $128. $150 is the MSRP. If you buy it for that much, you deserve to overpay.

Man the haters must be ripping their hair out. It's hilarious how so called "hardcore gamers" always rip on new technology that could potentially improve gaming in the long run, so narrow minded.

Of course it sold 2.5 million in 25 days. M$ did spend like 500 Million in ads just for it but I wonder how popular will it be later on within next year around this time.

kinect is very good it gives you a really good workout. its much better than i imagined it to be, its alot of fun and it feels new. and to those comparing it to the wii and the move. its nothing like the wii or the move. its completely different. its full body motion not just upper body, the kinect also senses you which makes it unique. i will not take credit away from the wii though because it did revolutionize motion control gaming, the playstation move is just a rip off of the wii and its clear as day, it has the exact same control scheme and everything.

To be honest, people complain that buttons are abstract. For example, I fail to see how doing a pelvic thrust to get "boost" while driving a car is not abstract... Kinect is simply a new form of abstraction. I look forward to trying it sometime, but I value my TV too much to risk kicking or punching it. Kinect is not selling super well in Japan, and I doubt it ever well. MS simply isn't liked very much over here. With Move and the new Wii mote having strong sales not only in Japan but also globally, Kinect has a long way to go.

I'd love to get Kinect but for now I'm very limited on the space needed for it, though one of my close friends has it and I can go play it at his place in the meantime. I'd like to get it eventually, I really like playing Dance Central and Kincet Sports, and am looking forward to playing << LINK REMOVED >> with Kincet, though I think it'll offer regular control support as well.
