Killzone 2 wins first gaming Ivor Novello

Prestigious British music-writing awards hand PS3-exclusive shooter inaugural video game music gong.

Killzone 2 took home the inaugural award for Best Original Video Game Score at the 2010 Ivor Novello awards yesterday. The awards, given out annually by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, have been running since 1955, but this is the first year games have been featured. This makes the Sony-published first-person shooter the first video game to be officially awarded by the UK composition community.

What is death without a little light music?
What is death without a little light music?

Speaking about the inclusion of games for the first time, Mark Fishlock, BASCA director and member of The Ivors Committee said, "Writing music for games also requires a number of specialist skills compared with conventional film scoring, such as nonlinear and multilayered composition. This is a very exciting development and one which hopefully will be fully embraced by the rapidly growing games world."

The Ivors, as they are known, are seen as particularly prestigious among musicians, as they are voted on by the 2,000 members of the academy and are not directly influenced by record labels, the music press, or the general public.

Killzone 2's composer, Joris de Man, fought off competition from Armin Elsaesser, who composed the music for Sony-published Fluffy Logic effort Savage Moon: Waldgeist, and Richard Beddow, Richard Birdsall, Walter Mair, Lorenzo Piggici, and Simon Ravn, who wrote the music for Sega-published strategy title Empire: Total War.

Talking to GameSpot after the event, a Creative Assembly representative said "We won a BAFTA this year and were nominated for an Ivor, so we feel games are starting to be understood as the massive and diverse art form they really are. It's a shame losing out, of course, but drinking champers with Lilly Allen and Dizze Rascal is an acceptable silver medal."

For more on the music of Killzone 2, check out the Start/Select interview with Joris de Man below.

@parhar67 You're real problem it's not control maneuver but lack of accuracy. In Killzone, unlike other shooters which aiming is almost automatic like in MW2, you need to practice that and it's a great challenge in online. However when you start mastering it, it's really rewarding.

I hope killzone 3 does not have the same brutal sluggish controls as number 2. That is what killed it for me. Gameplay in killzone was horrible. I felt like i was moving in molasses

This game feels like a forgotten gem, it really deserves all the praise it receives.

I preferred the Uncharted two score. But I can appreciate the choice.

@GrilledCharlie Killzone 2 requires skill when it comes to accuracy. It sounds like you are used to auto-aim like in CODs & Battlefields. I fact they removed the auto-aim feature for multiplayer in one of the earlier patches. As for your "they didn't put the effort into the controls" comment: The above fix and the later inclusion of the precision aim option alludes to the contrary. If you can't be bothered to learn to aim without help just say so.

@ TevoxZi It's not the control scheme that sucks, its the stick accuracy...or lack thereof. Its as if they tried to convey running in mud with barbells attached to the barrel of your gun.

I never really pay attention to music on my games, except for survival-horrors because the music gives it away, the noises I did pay attention to sounded good in the game. When's KZ3 coming out?

Too bad they didn't put the effort into the controls that they apparently did into the music.

Even though my prefered gaming platform is the PC, I would not play Killzone 2 (I have a PS3 as well) on the PC because it just wouldn't work very well with twitch controls. Even on the high-precision settings, there is still a bit of a "weighty" feeling to the controls that add a lot of immersion to firing and controlling weapons that you would just miss out on on a PC.

I bought a PS3 for this, little big planet and uncharted. the graphics were great no doubt (though peoples faces in particular looked awful) but the soundtrack wasnt exactly memorable. fun game but not as good as hoped.

@ kavadias1981: You were right, you were going to be tumbed down for that :) But I agree with your point about the characters of the game. They're unecessarely rough , cynical and rude during the whole game (except Garza).

Killzone 2 doesn't have the BEST video game music out there, but it was certainly good. It's nice to see a game win something like that. Good Job KZ2! PS3 for the win. ~:D

@TevoxZi Oh, when any X360-exclusive games wins any award, he'll troll as many as he like. And darn it, if only I have a PS3... (I already have a gaming laptop :D )

Kilzone2 Truely Cinematic music deserved this , I am surprised for such a high quality production it sold so few , I bought 3 8800GT Ultra to run Crysis at full specs , yes I was amazed with the visuals - then just a year later Killzone 2 amazed me even more with it's gorgeious environments , but I kept on going back to that game because of that engrossing music & scroching gameplay.

I'm going to get thumbed down for this but I don't care. Buying KZ2 was a big mistake. It was garbage from start to finish. The plot was nonsense, the controls were clunky, I despised the characters with their gutteral tongues and barbaric attitudes. The only satisfaction I got was shooting them and not the "enemies". Resistance 2 was a far superior game in my opinion.

For video games it had to be either this or God of War 3. Both had incredible orchestral scores.

The music is great but there are many other games out there I reckon would also deserve this award - Uncharted 2 or any of the Final Fantasy games from VII to X.

this game could've been the best FPS on PS3 if wasn't for the chunky control which made long distance tactic fight a joke. the aiming sight physics reminded me alot of crysis, the difference is, you play crysis with M/K, which doesn't work well for ps3 controllers
