Killzone 2 wins first gaming Ivor Novello

Prestigious British music-writing awards hand PS3-exclusive shooter inaugural video game music gong.

Killzone 2 took home the inaugural award for Best Original Video Game Score at the 2010 Ivor Novello awards yesterday. The awards, given out annually by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, have been running since 1955, but this is the first year games have been featured. This makes the Sony-published first-person shooter the first video game to be officially awarded by the UK composition community.

What is death without a little light music?
What is death without a little light music?

Speaking about the inclusion of games for the first time, Mark Fishlock, BASCA director and member of The Ivors Committee said, "Writing music for games also requires a number of specialist skills compared with conventional film scoring, such as nonlinear and multilayered composition. This is a very exciting development and one which hopefully will be fully embraced by the rapidly growing games world."

The Ivors, as they are known, are seen as particularly prestigious among musicians, as they are voted on by the 2,000 members of the academy and are not directly influenced by record labels, the music press, or the general public.

Killzone 2's composer, Joris de Man, fought off competition from Armin Elsaesser, who composed the music for Sony-published Fluffy Logic effort Savage Moon: Waldgeist, and Richard Beddow, Richard Birdsall, Walter Mair, Lorenzo Piggici, and Simon Ravn, who wrote the music for Sega-published strategy title Empire: Total War.

Talking to GameSpot after the event, a Creative Assembly representative said "We won a BAFTA this year and were nominated for an Ivor, so we feel games are starting to be understood as the massive and diverse art form they really are. It's a shame losing out, of course, but drinking champers with Lilly Allen and Dizze Rascal is an acceptable silver medal."

For more on the music of Killzone 2, check out the Start/Select interview with Joris de Man below.

Glad to see the soundtrack get's the recognition it deserves. Actually, one of the first things I look out for in a game is the quality of the soundtrack. Killzone 2's stuck out instantly with the opening movie and the Main Menu theme. I was happy to see that the actual in-game music matched this quality. KZ2, Halo 3:ODST and Uncharted 2 had the best OSTs of 2009 without a doubt!

The only thing I must say I didn't really care for in Killzone 2 was the controls, but it's not like it broke the game, it was still very playable and lots of fun,

Killzone 2 is dated but still has enough fight in it to keep up with some of today's games being released, Killzone 3 will indeed be something to behold :D

not the best place to mention this but i found killzone 2's single player to be very boreing and run off the mill (apologise to people who enjoyed the game) maybe my expectations were to high it just seemed so plain. Although the multiplayer was fun but again nothing that stood out i just scratch my head and wonder how it won so many awards? Anyone eles share this opinion

Killzone 2 is one hell of a game and worthy of every award it has earned. I am looking forward to #3! This game is one hell of a reason to buy a PS3. IMHO, the online is MUCH better than halo's. @ y2kern gamespot, as well as all other gaming media sites, are biased one way or the other. I have to agree they are 360 biased as well. Another thing worth mentioning, I think ALOT of these gaming sites are starting to lose credibility in recent months. Just look at Splinter Cell from last month. IGN rated it higher than any of the subscores it gave the game. HOW do you rate a game as high as they did when NONE of the subscores are as high. Graphics, presentation, audio, replayability, gameplay... NONE of those categories they score individually equaled what their final score was. Now you have Red Dead released, and the scores from all of the big gaming media sites are practically identical for each platform when there is an obvious technical advantage on the 360. Why don't these sites REFUSE to review games without having all versions available so they can CREDIBLY advise gamers as to which version is superior? I have my opinion as to why, what's yours? I also have to say Uncharted 2 is a better game than ME 2. Also, UC 2 gives you more bang for the buck. Co-op and multiplayer. The ME games do nothing for me, and they leave me bored rather quickly.

@ bigboss2014 are you sure you know what you are talking about with the whole gamespot being biased thing?. well towards xbox. i think you are wrong its the other way around they are more biased towards ps3. when have you seen any xbox game get a full score like metal gear solid guns of the patriot. unchartered 2 which is not better than mass effect 2 in any way got a higher score , even when game sites like IGN said mass effect 2 is the better game, and they are also biased as well towards the ps3. and to be honest reviews are done for both console multiplatform games, thats why they are able to tell you when the frame rate on the 360 is better.

If only they would of fixed the whole hold button to go into cover thing. Can't even play through on elite cause you definitely need cover and my fingers keep cramping having to hold the damn button. Congrats on the award though...Everything else about the game was amazing.

my view from personal experience: to me, the game sucked so much, controlls are clunky and gameplay in general sucked, story is dull etc. the only good thing is the grafix + the music maybe (although i didnt notice it that well). but hey, thats my view. dont know about you guys. for me, the game doesnt deserve it or anything.

@redskinStu Killzone 2 got some very good scores, Gamespot gave it a 9/10 and on Metacritic it's averaging a 91, I don't think that's underrated.

This is kinda cool, I always thought Killzone 2 had an unusually good musical score, underrated really. The multiplayer theme still sticks in my head even though I don't really KZ2's multiplayer.

@TevoxZi there is no point complaining, gamespot are a massive xbox biased website, when they play a multiplatform game its always on xbox, always. and then theres the xbots who still think the pleasefixme is superior even though its dieing out at a massive rate, especialy now that bungies gone the xbox is gone, so just enjoy knowing that arter 3 years of survatude, ps3 is finally winning

@TEvoxZi I responded to a racist comment someone made a while back saying that he shouldn't be a such a jerk. I then got banned for the weekend for harrassment, I sent a message saying 'lol' and got banned for the week. Stupid really.

It's amazing how I always get reported for trolling whenever I respond to SalarianChemist when he's obviously doing it himself. So basically defending the PS3 is trolling when I'm only stating my opinion and saying he doesn't own a PS3 which he doesn't? Wow GameSpot, you suck, thanks for your stupid crew I might just as well quit coming here all for once. Have fun warning people that're trying to defend this place from trolls like him. No other site has ever accused me of doing it, that's right.. Don't use the word troll if you don't know what it means. Sorry for the rude behaviour, but I seriously can't take this unfair crew anymore, it's bull*beeb* how they warn people for doing nothing wrong, yet leave those that do so alone.

I don't really know why people are comparing shooting games, bringing up the controls, etc. when the article is only talking about the award it won. But anyway, it was a very appropriate score. I found myself always divulged into the world with huge help from the music. I'm glad it was noticed.

Really enjoyed the score for KZ2, nice to see it get some recognition. As for everyone saying that the game controlled sluggishly, I agree, but once you got used to it the shooting was top-notch. Really liked that I had to stop and aim to get a kill and laying down cover fire from the hip was a viable tactic for me to make my advance. Some of the most up-close and dirty shooting I've experienced in any game if you play it that way.

@ ohmikkie Considering that they released at least 4 different patches to fix the controls, I'm pretty sure that means that there was a problem with them. It has nothing to do with COD or BF. It has to do with them making the controls horrible, and then trying to cover it up by claiming that they are realistic.

This game felt rushed. The soundtrack was fine, epic scores here and there, lingering creepy tracks, but the gameplay was just, well, off. For all who enjoy it, please continue to do so. I just found it lacking in a lot of areas. Exciting universe and fun levels (inside your command ship as it was burning up was sweet) were fantastic, and I hope to see them improve with 3, along with the sloggy run speed and offsetting gameplay (why can they take a full clip to the face, not the helmet, THE FACE, and not be bothered? Helghan breeding apparently gives them jawbones of steel?) But for now, KZ2 will have to stay out of my collection for a time. Certainly wasn't the worst game I've played, but not the best either. Here's hoping 3 will be amazing, and all I hoped for. I'll be glad to eat my words if it is.
