Fallout 76: Review, Guide, Power Armor, And What You Need To Know

Here's what we know so far about Bethesda's upcoming online action-RPG.

Only a few years after Fallout 4's release, Bethesda surprised fans by officially announcing Fallout 76, the next entry in its beloved post-apocalyptic RPG franchise. The new game was revealed in a trailer after a series of teases, and Bethesda discussed it in more detail at E3 2018 and at QuakeCon 2018. We even got an opportunity to play the game at a recent hands-on preview event. But the game is out now, and we've only just began to make strides in Bethesda's sprawling adventure.

To ensure you're kept up to date on everything there is to know about Fallout 76, we've compiled all the information we have on the game so far: the platforms it's on, its online functionality, its anti-griefing features, and where the game falls in the series' timeline.

Now Playing: Fallout 76 Gameplay: Watch The First 20 Minutes

If you've been playing the beta, you'll be happy to know that the game is receiving a launch day update containing a ton of new content. In the meantime, be on the lookout for our full review, as well a slew of guides to help you get started in the game.

Our Fallout 76 Review

"Bethesda has stated it intends to continue supporting the game for a long time, but at launch, Fallout 76 is a poor experience. There are echoes of the series' admirable qualities, but look past that facade, past the cute Vault Boy animations, past the familiar radio tracks, and you'll find no heart--just an inconsequential wasteland doomed to be nuked over and over again." Read our review.

What is Fallout 76?

Fallout 76 is a prequel to all of the previous Fallout games. Set in 2102, you play an inhabitant of Vault 76 who emerges from the shelter 25 years after the bombs fell on America. Your task is simple: explore what remains of post-apocalyptic America and rebuild civilization.

Longtime fans will likely recognize Vault 76; although it's not a place we've visited before, this isn't the series' first mention of it. Both Fallout 3 and 4 reference it and, according to the Fallout Wikia, this West Virginia-based vault was occupied by 500 of of America's best and brightest minds. Unlike the more grotesque experimental vaults in the Fallout universe, Vault 76 is a control vault intended to be opened 20 or so years after a nuclear war. But if the Vault was supposed to open 20 years after the bombs fell, why have 25 years gone by? The story has a few surprises in store for those willing to tackle its myriad challenges.

Fallout 76 uses the Creation Engine, the same engine used to make Fallout 4, but it will purportedly feature much more graphical detail than its predecessor. Game director Todd Howard has said that Fallout 76 has new rendering and lighting technology, which allows for "16 times" the detail.

Who's Developing It?

Bethesda Game Studios, the Maryland-based developer responsible for the Elder Scrolls series and both Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, is at work on the game. In addition, Bethesda Game Studios Austin--formerly BattleCry Studios--assisted in fine-tuning the Creation Engine to support multiplayer functionality.

Is It An Online Survival Game?

Fallout 76 is a much different sort of game from its predecessors. It's "entirely online," but don't worry, you'll be able to play it solo too. According to Bethesda, the idea to take this approach to open-world survival came four years ago, when it started to work on building a multiplayer Fallout experience. Howard described the game's approach to survival as "softcore," which means death doesn't equal loss of progression.

You can form a party with up to three other players. You won't be able to manage your placement in servers when you login, as you'll automatically be inserted into a session with others upon booting up the game. Of course, you also have the option simply join alongside your friends and play together.

Howard commented that Fallout 76 will have dedicated servers that will support the game "now and for years to come." At launch, there will only be public servers, but Bethesda plans to introduce private servers that will allow players to invite friends to play in order to prevent undesirable behavior.

Some classic mechanics from past games will be changing to accommodate the shift to online play. For example, V.A.T.S has been reconfigured to work in real time, while still allowing players to target specific enemy body parts. But this time around, it has been updated to be more of a tool that allows you to spot out dangers in the environment.

How Big Is The World?

According to Howard, Fallout 76's world is four times the size of Fallout 4. There are six different regions to explore, and each has its own unique style, risks, and rewards. Confirmed areas include the West Virginia State Capitol, The Greenbrier, Woodburn Circle, New River Gorge Bridge, and Camden Park. Contained within each area is a variety of new creatures to encounter, some of which are based on West Virginian folklore. You can take at the full map in the image below.

What Can You Do?

Like previous games, players spend the majority of their time exploring and completing quests. However, Fallout 76 does not feature any human non-player characters, as all surviving humans are controlled by active players. Instead, the game uses a combination of robot NPCs, collectible recordings, and environmental storytelling in order to give players what they need to piece together quests and the story at large.

Given the game's premise of rebuilding the world, there's base-building elements similar to Fallout 4. You're able to set up a bases anywhere using an item called the Construction and Assembly Mobile Platform, or C.A.M.P. These can be placed down in the world and allow you to construct an impromptu camp. We got to see the player laying down walls and decorating the base with pool tables, toilets, and other household objects. As the "mobile platform" part of the name implies, your CAMP can also be picked up and relocated, allowing you to move your base anywhere in the world.

No Caption Provided

While you can help build the world, you can also destroy it. If you have the necessary nuclear launch codes, it's actually possible to access a missile silo to fire a nuke at any point on the map. Doing so irradiates the chosen area, but it also allows for the opportunity to discover rare weapons, gear, and items. Be wary; nuking an area also causes more powerful enemies to show up, making it more difficult to survive. But don't be discouraged by this, the C.A.M.P. blueprint system makes it easy for players to quickly rebuild their homes, and if they're privy to an incoming threat, they can pack their things and move to a new location.

As an online experience, player choice is incredibly important, going as far as giving players the freedom to choose who are the heroes and who are the villains. Early footage showcased multiple players engaging in combat and participating in friendly activities, which seems to indicate that players have the freedom to choose their paths in the world of Fallout 76.

How Does Character Creation And Progression Work?

There are similar character creation tools as Fallout 4. However, you're free to change your appearance at any point. In addition, you can also utilize the game's new photo mode during the creation process to better see how your character looks, as well as snap some shots you can share on social media.

The SPECIAL system returns and it's a bit different. Like previous games, SPECIAL encompasses the following stats: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, Luck. You're given one point to put into any of those stats every time you level up. The first thing you do when you emerge from the vault is pick a SPECIAL and then you pick a perk in that particular SPECIAL. Essentially, every SPECIAL is a pool of points for your perks.

But unlike previous games, perks are now cards you can equip and unlock as you rank up in a given SPECIAL; though, you're free to swap cards out at any time if you want to alter your build. Each SPECIAL characteristic you develop has a perk card cap of 15. These perk cards can be enhanced further from one to five points to increase their power.

You can obtain additional perk cards via Perk Card Packs (four random cards), which you earn every two levels initially (1-10), and then every 5 after that. You can also pick one perk card per level, usually from your SPECIAL choice. There are hundreds of Perks cards you can unlock, so naturally SPECIAL ranks cap out after a while (you gain a rank up in a SPECIAL each time you level up). At level 50, you'll stop increasing SPECIAL ranks, but you'll still get card packs.

How Does PvP Work?

When you shoot someone you do a little bit of damage, which can be equated to lightly slapping them in order to challenge them to a duel. In response to this, the other player can choose to ignore or engage. If they engage in a battle with you, they'll start to take full damage. The one who is killed in this consenting PvP match has the option to seek revenge. Doing so gives that person the opportunity to get double the rewards granted they're successful.

If you'd rather choose to ignore a PvP match, there's no way to escape being killed--despite the small damage dealt to you during the initiation phases. However, if you are killed by a player under these circumstances, that player becomes a Wanted Murderer and will receive no rewards from having killed you.

A Wanted Murderer is marked on the map as a red star and a bounty is placed on their head. Players looking to cash in on this bounty aren't visible on the Murderer's map. If the murderer is killed, the money from that bounty is taken out their stock.

In order to give players time to properly acclimate to how Fallout 76 plays, PvP won't be available to players until level five. And if you perish from any PvP encounter, the only thing you'll lose is the junk you've been collecting, which can be reclaimed after death if not already picked up by other players. You can always store junk in stashes found around the world, so as to safeguard a portion of your stock. Armor and weapons are retained in your inventory after death.

We recently got a hands-on with a build of Fallout 76. It plays similarly to Fallout 4, but it features some new additions that subtly shift the paradigm established by past entries in the series. We got to experience three hours of the game, exploring a decent chunk of the opening area while taking on quests and generally working cooperatively with the players around us. There's a lot to unpack about how the upcoming multiplayer open-world RPG, so be sure to watch the video above and read our full thoughts in our in-depth preview detailing what we got to play.

Any Voice Chat?

It's possible to chat with your teammates and even strangers you discover out in the world. It's area-based so your ability to hear other plays will vary. But if you want nothing to do with strangers, it's possible to mute their voices entirely.

Guides And What To Do First

Fallout 76 is a massive game that just might overwhelm you right at the start. To help ease the pain of emerging from Vault 76, we've gathered together some recommendations of where to go first. But if you want a full rundown on stuff you should know before starting, check out our Fallout 76 beginner's guide. In addition, we have guides on Perk cards and Power Armor locations.

Release Date

Fallout 76 is being developed for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and is currently scheduled to be released on November 14. Unfortunately, there's no word about a Nintendo Switch release, which didn't seem out of the question after the Skyrim re-release made it to that platform.

"The specific date on the Pip-Boy is October 27, 2102; that could be pointing to a release date for the game."

If the release date is not for another 85 years, I'm not holding my breath. ;P

When do you suppose they will start taking pre-orders. 2020, 2080?

Okay um..........Razorclaws? Has Jake even played Fallout? The Deathclaw has been a scourge on the wasteland since the very beginning. How can someone even comment on a game that they barely even know?!

@ronin1029: Not everyone is blessed with instantaneous, 100% correct memory. Despite your criticism, I'm sure you fall into the same category. Also, whether you know a game or not has absolutely no effect on one's ability to comment on it.

Do you have to have had an icepick shoved under your toenail to hold an opinion that you don't think you'd enjoy it? Or are you saying you have to go through the experience to gain the right to have a say on the subject?

Love the dude on the right that does not even know what a Deathclaw is (Razorclaw? You kidding me?). Might as well have a carrot take that seat on the right and be talking to it.

Every fallout game has a new vault. If they keep making more fallout games they will eventually run out of vaults. I wonder what direction will they after that...

Sigh.... Bethesda probably don't even know anymore who Obsidian are thanks to the easily amused modern day gamer. FO4 was garbage and anyone that thinks it wasn't, thanks for continuing allowing great games to become shit. You are doing a damn great job at that.

@chubby170: You are wrong. Sales are good because more people play video games now than in the 90s, by a milestone ! Especially the younger generation. To make Fallout 1 work for instance on DOS, you had to be a computer geek basically, it was full of flaws and bugs and crashes.

My point ? More masses play now and those masses are easily amused. This is great for Bethesda because that means they can slack away (produce games at cheaper cost) which obviously happened with Fallout 4.

The sales, sure, good, because the masses love and adore Fallout 4 (OMG you can build stuff !!!) but fact is, it is a boring, lackluster game that totally diverts off from previous titles in a negative way that I won't mention (could write a book on it).

Your MANY SALES = GOOD example did work in the 90s and maybe up to the mid 00s regarding games, forget it afterwards. Just look at BF, COD, etc, all shit games and look at those sales. And you cannot obviously compare nowaday's boring ass BF/COD titles with the ones back in the day...I mean, duh...

@phili878: Sorry but you are wrong. Comparing FO3 to FO4, there arent amass influx of games since...

Ive played FO3 and am currently playing FONV, and so far id take FO4 over both.

Different strokes for different folks I assume.

@chubby170: Mate, FO3 to FO4 other gen of players compared to earlier games. FO1/FO2 to FO3, vegas etc, completely different gen of players. Way less played back then than now. You literally had to be a computer geek to make FO1 work on a Win95. These days, apps etc do all automatically for them, the reason more players play as well, more user-friendly.

Taking FO4 over NV, I do not understand you. I respect your opinion but I really don't get it, unless you made that decision based on base building and graphics, still no major factor for me, but I could understand if it is for others. I mean, even Vegas DLCs were master pieces, that voice acting, so awesome. So many more options, dialogues and again, that voice acting !

But ok, hope you enjoy 76, I know I won't because it basically has nothing to do with what FO was originally thought for, and to change brilliant ideas to make them worse, (which is happening) is just wrong and just because FO today has more players than back then, does not mean it is better ! A 1967 Ford Mustang GT is still driving the roads today, but many more drive a 2018 Ford Mustang GT and you can simply not compare the two. Also, 50 years down the road the 67 GT will still be a cult vehicle, just as FO1/2 will be cult games, while FO4, FO76 will be crap forgotten in history like the modern Mustang GT.

@phili878: The base building was ok but thats not what I am into. The graphics are a part of it I suppose. FO3 I just found boring almost all around. FONV, I am still playing. Its good, dont get me wrong but it just seems to be missing something to me. The setting is extremely bland to me, everything looks the same virtually in the Mohave Wasteland. The quests have been ok, nothing to write home about as of now, but as mentioned, I still have a lot to go through...

I do not believe that from the time the FO3 to FO4, there was a massive wave of new gamers coming along. I would think these you could compare.

Its funny you make mention of the modern Mustang, as it known to be the best one in decades hahaha.

@chubby170: Ok, I understand you much better now :)

As for Stangs. The modern Mustang is the best one in decades in terms of 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, sure. However, zero change against 60s and 70s Mustangs. A GT500 Shelby goes for 500,000 usd base price alone, a 2015 Shelby with 40,000 miles you can already get for like 50% off.

I also used the Mustang because I do have both, a 67 Mustang GT and a 2016 GT (I am a hobby/part-time Mustang mechanic). 67 worth is 90,000 USD, my 2016 model already lost 40% in value, and it lost 20% in value the sec I got it from the dealership and drove it to the first traffic light but I needed one. I might change it for the new bullitt although I am not a fan of green.

Trust me, example was perfect ;)

@phili878: Well, the example was perfect in your eyes. Yes, having an old, good production car will be worth good money years down the road while the newer ones may not be like that, many factors behind those reasons, for example, how many cars were built in 67 vs. the new ones, obviously a lot more so they simply wont be as valuable as newer ones will be easier to source.. But with that said, there is no denying that the newer Mustangs are better cars in almost every way, faster, better gas mileage, newer technology, better handling and so on.

So, it really depends where the owner puts its value. I think most specialty cars like the 67 Mustang are valuable because, yes they are well made, but more-so, they are very rare to find in good condition. The rarity of the car is what is giving it value, not that is will out perform this or that.

@phili878: You mean the same Fallout 4 that got an average of 87 / 88 on PS / Xbox? That one? That's the one you think is garbage? Fine - if you think it's garbage, then I have no problem with that. I think those boring point-a-thon Telltale games, and any fighting games are garbage. But because I have a little class what I wouldn't do is to suggest that anyone who thinks those games are anything other than rubbish is "allowing great games to become shit".

It's called an "opinion". You're clearly not scared of having one, but at some point in the future you will need to realise that your opinion of something may just be in the minority. Like now.

@mpl911: with the horrible paid game reviewers of today it is no wonder... So what you are saying basically is that FO4 is just as good as BF4. Given the same scores, well, that is exactly what you are implying since you appear to go along with what these crap game reviewers say.

@phili878: You're missing the point. To me, yes FO4 is as "good" as BF4. But something that may have higher scores on Metacritic, like the Telltale games, imo are not as "good" as FO4...it's all about what I want to play. I like driving games and FPS / shooters so to me they will always be worth an extra few points. I'm playing State of Decay 2 now. GS gave it a 5 and even on Metacritic it's only around 70 - but I'd give it an 8. So it doesn't matter what reviewers give a game...if i think I might like it, I'll buy it.

@jsprunk: Game is garbage, horrible and boring voice acting, no idea how you can even compare it with Fallout Vegas in terms of voice acting (I won't even get into Fallout 2), and in terms of quests and especially side quests, you seriously compare FO4's boring ass sleeping pill main and side quest to the ones of FO3 ? The only thing that is great about FO4 compared with the previous ones are exactly 2 things:

1. Graphics

2. You can build stuff (which surely was fun for a few extra hours).

The rest is complete shit. Also, you are one of the only ones to apparently talk of Vegas and FO3 as it would be inferior to sleeping pill two outcome FO4.

@phili878: Don't get me wrong, I like all of the Fallout games. Tactics wasn't my cup of tea, but it was ok for what it was. FO3 is a big game, but it's controls are wonky as hell by today's standards, and aside from a couple of big name actors, the voice acting was pretty awkward. FO NV just seemed really short to me. I've played through it about 4 times now, and I still haven't put as much time into it as I have FO4.

Bethesda admitted that they chopped the dialogue choice down to minimum in FO4, but I've never really played any FO games with the intention of experiencing a groundbreaking story. I play it as a 1st person RPG, where my skill choices and behavior in-game make up 90% of my roleplaying.

I thought FO4 was a great game, and am hoping the next game simply improves upon its few shortcomings.

@phili878: No worries. I feel for you. I think PC games pretty much schitt the bed when devs started catering to consoles and ease of use through a game controller instead of a mouse and keyboard. Plus the introduction of automatic save points in a lot of games and the dumbing down of graphics for many years made PC gaming more of a chore than a fun hobby. We still see the after effects of this in games like FO4 where dialogue choices are made through choices catering to controllers, and the god-awful inventory system still prevails...although it's gotten slightly better over the years.

Hard to say what they will do with this entry into the series. I am still currently trying to finish Fallout 4 and all of the DLC. Such a massive game.

I'm leaning 90% this is online, with the way ESO has become such a cash making juggernaut for Bethesda it really just makes sense... for them. Certainly not anything the fanbase was even asking for, I might add. There is still hope this is the actual 5th installment but the time frame just doesn't make sense. 3 years since 4 came out and Bethesda never rushes out major series releases. 6 years between Oblivion and Skyrim. 7 years between 3 & 4. However, you have the Austin studio that has provided additional manpower in making this title, my guess would be to polish the online aspect. But again, it's possible Austin was responsible for something smaller like the weapons and armor builds, refining that aspect, while Bethesda Maryland focused exclusively on story and the landscape, who knows at this point? If they simply updated the old Fallout engine, which appears to be the case, that could be another factor in completing a full on fifth title, with no learning curve for the developers. Then again, Obsidian was given an entire 18 months for New Vegas and that is one of the best.

With Pillars of Eternity and Divinity IMO being awesome on consoles was ANYONE besides me hoping the new Fallout was a return to their roots and a new isometric based game? It seems like it would be sick.

@johnnykchop: Maybe a small spin off Fallout that gets announced alongside a larger AAA entry. I don't think the vast majority of the Fallout audience Bethesda has created in the last ten years would do anything but pitch a fit if a Fallout 76 was an isometric, turn based game. The Bethesda style Fallout games just have too big an appeal to change the formula THAT dramatically.

I hope I can go to the bathroom in this game. Which brings to this question, when will the video game industry will create an engine that includes the insides of human anatomy?

I'm all for a mmo or atleast a co op fallout game and I do love base building..just hope there not rehashed fallout 4 graphics being as skyrim has been the same outdated graphics since PS3 and Xbox 360 just with slight improvements .. I do hope bathesda pull there finger out and give us next gen graphics for our next gen consoles!!

@ilukey40: absolutely not, this game will have the same outdated graphics for sure; maybe for PS5/xbox Y, I repeat maybe, they will drop that engine with those horrible animations and ragdoll phisics 12 years old.....they were "meh" even at that time

@DANNYtheBOY11: this is what always worries me with games like assassins creed etc.. when they spit a game out every year it quickly ruins there reputation as you can tell it's just a re skin of the previous game and charging full price for it!

I'll be very disappointed if it's just a re skin of fallout 4!!

@ilukey40: I don't mind some reskins of character models, graphics and such but the social system really needs to be revamped, it was bad in FO4, no depth at all also some really good quests combined with major consequences would be perfect!

@ilukey40: technically wise it will be at fallout 4 level, if not pratically the same: it's just a spin-off, not a "new game", plus you need to consider more players online at the same time and base building mean they need to sacrifice graphics/framerate (which were already sacrificed in the singleplayer F4 for engine and team's capabilities reasons); at the end of the day, you can only hope about gameplay, it might be different (in a good way), that's about it.

Dear Gamespot, would you please stop disabling the comment section in the articles you put out? You have done so on every article there has been criticism regarding either criticizing the the article itself, or criticizing an announcement of some game.

Here are two examples. One is from this article.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/battlefield-5-boss-defends-female-characters-sayin/1100-6459228/

I am guessing this article had the comment section disabled because you guys found someone saying something inappropriate. But there were also a lot of people who had some valid criticism, such as it was not clear whether the trailer was singleplater or multiplayer match. As well as historic inaccuracies about WW2. Which we can all agree is not something the world is very fond if it is meddled with. *Cough* Holocaust deniers *Cough*

The next article is from this one

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/deadpool-2-and-solo-are-both-worse-thanks-to-one-t/1100-6459359/

Which is an opinion piece from you guys, the comment section was not even enabled here, I am guessing it has to do that there are probably some who do not agree with this opinion piece. Would it not be more productive if you knew what other people think about this opinion piece? Rather than just stop people from commenting?

In essence what I am trying to say is that criticism is not something to be afraid or feedback, as it is the only way you guys can really understand what people think. So please stop disabling the comment section, and yes idiots and trolls do exist but they will always exist.

@bulletproff: Interesting opinion although I don't expect such behaviour of GS. Looks like a technical failure. But GS should absolutely react to your concerns! Maybe somewhere over here: https://www.gamespot.com/forums/ it is possible to get a reaction of GS.

@bulletproff: Funniest thing is that there are a lot of holocaust-deniers among the people complaining about female soldiers in an arcade WW2 video game .

@bulletproff: They're doing that because they don't want a bunch of people saying super racist/sexist junk in the comments. They know their community.

What do we know about Fallout 76? Apparently very little other than what one might infer from the trailer...
