Escape From Mount Stupid: Half-Life

Danny returns to Black Mesa and City 17 to remind us how Gordon Freeman saved first-person shooters forever.

I remember the first time I played Half-Life. My brother copied it from his university friend's shared drive and bundled the files onto a bunch of zip disks. He went to university 100 miles away in Dublin and came home only on the weekends, so it took three weeks before we had all the files on our home PC. It took me five summer weeks to finish it on the easiest difficulty. Five weeks of blissfully replaying entire levels over and over again. Five weeks in which I learnt most of what I know about first-person shooters. I was in university myself when the sequel came out, or rather I should have been. Instead, I took two weeks off to play the game.

The effect Half-Life had on first-person shooter design from that day forward is often forgotten, so this was a really important series to cover in Escape From Mount Stupid. It feels right to mark the start of the show's second season with a blockbuster. Over the next five weeks we'll have five more episodes going live each Monday afternoon.

As for the zip disks, well, if Valve is reading this, I've since bought the entire Half-Life collection on Steam, so no lawsuits please. Enjoy the show.

I still haven't figured out how to push that button. :( 20 minutes of entertaining video = no apology needed, Mr. O'Dwyer. I don't think we'll be seeing anything about the next Half-Life for at least a year, if not more. Can't wait for that wrestling game video next week!

"I remember the first time I played Half-Life. My brother copied it from his university friend's shared drive and bundled the files onto a bunch of zip disks." Isn't that, like, piracy...? And no one mentions it? Such hypocrisy...

This has become my favorite gamespot serial, keep up the good work danny. and no, Valve wouldn't release three new games in one year. HL3 is coming out Q1 or Q4 2013.

this just makes me want to play the entire series again..and yeah... Nothing has come close to half life 1 and 2 in FPS awesomeness to date. Just seeing that intro with the train automatically made me reinstall all the half lifes again. I couldnt agree more how fps's and gameplay has deteriorated into Quicktime event awfulness. In just about every game, including Crysis 2. Just the fact Modern Warfare has A and B logos onscreen in search and destroy, is horrible enough.

@sarimrocks, Well i certainly would'nt rule out the appearance of the 'Apperature' in the next Half Life. Quite simply the best 'Story Based' FPS series ever made!!

Haha, this whole video is very true. HL and Opposing Force were two all time classics. Blue Shift was way too short and minimal to be included. Can I get a track ID for the mellow song that plays in the background around 6 minutes please?

Valve is always awesome! From start to finish (For now)... they've never disappointed me in anyway. I have always been a huge fan about their games and will be forever. Still hoping that Half-Life 3 would come out though....

"Come on Gordon, you trying to get me into trouble?" Best video I've seen on GameSpot in a while, I downloaded the OEM version of HL1 before the full version came out, I think I played it on of the first generation Pentiums. Back then, all we had was a couple of bare websites and PC gamer magazine for our gaming info. I wish we had the quality of content back then with the modern delivery methods we have using high speed internet today. Either way, this did bring me back to what I believe was the pinnacle of PC gaming.

Regarding Half-Life and FPS design: I'm glad a lot of that has been forgotten. A lot of Half-Life's innovations were purely superficial - namely you being part of the (unskippable) cinematics. Luckily developers have learned from that and you're not stuck waiting 5 minutes to play your game anymore. Beyond that, Half-Life never wowed me. I was lucky enough to get caught up in Goldeneye and Turok, both of which came out around the same time and genuinely had much more to offer from the perspective of gameplay. Unfortunately, many of the better elements from both of these games have been lost to the sands of time. Not to draw a comparison so much as to create a perspective.

Half-Life is the best game ever made and easily the most influential game of the last 15 years. Without it, for better or worse, the gaming industry would still be presenting games with paper thin stories, FPS games without AI and Quake would be a yearly release... basically unchanged from Quake 3 Arena.

Its been so long since the episode 2 came out... Half Life 3 or episode 3 seems to be a sort of a fairy tale by now I just love to see what "soon" means in that wicked Valve time xD Srsly though if anyone out there from one if not the best company out there is reading this, WE (I think I speak for everyone) want the sequel as soon as possible! Thank you
